- Chapter 117 - But Why Do I Always Feel… If I Don’t Come Now, I’ll Never Have Another Chance?
Qin Yan rarely fell ill, so when she suddenly got sick, it was quite serious.
At first, everyone thought it was just a common fever, but it kept her bedridden for several days, and eventually, she had to be taken to the hospital.
Xia Mingtang had initially been holding back a lot of frustration, thinking: once this person got better, she would settle the score properly.
But now, seeing this sickly figure taking medicine, frail and pitiful, she couldn’t bring herself to be angry.
Tomorrow was Saturday, so Xia Mingtang decided to take a day off in advance to come to the hospital and care for her.
As soon as she entered the ward, she saw Qin Yan sitting on the bed with a laptop on her lap, fingers tapping away continuously.
“Snap!” Xia Mingtang went forward and closed the laptop with one hand, speaking firmly.
“The doctor said you have a central nervous system infection caused by fever and need to rest. How come you don’t have any self-discipline?”
Used to being managed by Qin Yan, Xia Mingtang finally had a chance to flip the roles and become the “boss,” and it made her feel a bit proud.
The sick Qin Yan was not as temperamental as usual; she was unusually easy to talk to.
The tall, slender figure on the bed was wrapped in a soft, gentle aura.
The strands of hair sticking to her face, damp with sweat, made her look like a little dog caught in the rain.
Qin Yan moved the laptop aside and pulled Xia Mingtang over, making her sit on the bed and leaning against her arm.
“Wife, you’re here! It’s been so long, I missed you so much~”
The final “so much” was drawn out in a long, soft tone.
Xia Mingtang pretended to be annoyed. “Didn’t we just see each other this morning? What’s there to miss?”
Qin Yan’s eyes glistened with wetness, her expression innocent and slightly helpless.
“This morning? I feel like I’ve been asleep forever. It’s been such a long time since I last saw you.”
Looking at this pure and innocent expression, a thought suddenly flashed through Xia Mingtang’s mind.
“How old are you now?”
“Nineteen! I just had my birthday less than a month ago. And I remember you promised me—I’m still owed a wish.”
Xia Mingtang: …
Well, just like that, she had suddenly reverted.
Xia Mingtang felt a mix of amusement and disbelief. No matter how hard she had tried before—even going to the lengths of seduction—she had never been able to revert her.
Yet now, she simply went out to work, and Qin Yan changed back on her own.
No, it must be related to this illness.
The 31-year-old, often unpredictable and prone to tantrums, had become the 19-year-old, pure, kind, youthful, and easygoing Qin Yan.
Logically, Xia Mingtang should have been happy.
Yet thinking about the recent events, a sense of unease rose in her heart.
For a moment, she couldn’t even pinpoint where the unease came from.
“Wife, why aren’t you saying anything?” Qin Yan sat up, holding one of her hands and lightly shaking it.
“Ah.” Xia Mingtang came back to her senses, smiling faintly. “I’m happy to see you’re back. Rest well.”
After reverting to her 19-year-old self, Qin Yan’s body also seemed to regain its youthful vigor.
In just two days, she was ready to be discharged.
Xia Mingtang handled the discharge procedures for her.
She drove her own Pagani to the hospital to pick her up, but instead of going straight back to the Xijing Villa, she took Qin Yan to a nearby park to play.
Initially, Xia Mingtang was concerned about Qin Yan’s still-weak body and wasn’t too keen on her running around.
But Qin Yan insisted, even intending to use her birthday wish.
Xia Mingtang had no choice. “It’s not like you’re wasting it. I’ll accompany you.”
Now awake in the hospital, Qin Yan finally had freedom, and she was with the person she liked. She looked extremely happy.
Perhaps she had been cooped up for too long; on the way, she chattered nonstop, like a machine gun.
“Wife, I’ve never seen this street before. Is it new? It looks pretty nice. Can we come again next time?”
“Wife, that dog looks so strange, it seems like it has no eyes. Where do you think its owner is?”
“Wife, I just saw a ‘Fengxian’ restaurant. The exterior looks a lot like the ‘Weixian’ restaurant. Do you think it’s part of a chain?”
“Wife…”
“Wife…”
“Wife…”
Xia Mingtang had to keep her hands on the steering wheel and respond casually.
At this moment, she suddenly understood what it felt like when the 31-year-old Qin Yan drove her around.
Though she was replying perfunctorily, the 19-year-old Qin Yan, chattering all the way, seemed truly happy.
Her delicate lips never stopped moving, as if racing against time, trying to record every bit of the world.
They arrived at the park Qin Yan mentioned.
The park had been around for more than twenty years, so the amusement facilities were quite old-fashioned.
Even on a weekend, there weren’t many visitors.
Yet Qin Yan, who loved browsing trending travel spots on social media, had specifically chosen this place.
Two years ago, Xia Mingtang also loved taking friends to different amusement parks, but she wasn’t interested in this kind of old-fashioned park.
The Pagani stopped at the main entrance, and they turned right a few steps into the park, reaching the “Happy Plaza.”
Looking around, there weren’t many young people—mostly elderly couples taking walks.
The carousel, moon spaceship, and bumper cars were all idle.
A ticket booth stood in the center, with one clerk handling tickets for multiple attractions.
Xia Mingtang was pulled along by Qin Yan and looked at the peeling carousel, unsure.
“Are you sure you want to ride this?”
“Yeah!” Qin Yan nodded firmly, eyes sparkling.
She pointed at a white horse with a crown. “Wife, you sit on that one, so we can ride side by side.”
Are you really nineteen now, not nine?
Xia Mingtang silently scoffed, but seeing Qin Yan’s excited expression, she couldn’t say “no.”
They bought tickets and rode the adjacent white and blue horses.
The cheerful fairy-tale melody played, and the little horses bobbed up and down.
Qin Yan held the horse’s neck with one hand and raised the other hand above her head, forming rabbit ears, smiling brightly at Xia Mingtang.
Xia Mingtang, struck by a sudden impulse, took out her phone to snap a photo.
Seeing this, Qin Yan happily insisted that Xia Mingtang make the same rabbit-ear gesture.
They called it taking a couple’s profile picture.
After the carousel, Qin Yan, still clingy, updated their profile with the new photo.
Then she slipped like a fish into the bumper car pool.
Even at 19, Qin Yan had rarely been this childlike.
Seeing her obsessed with the rides, Xia Mingtang felt she seemed to be hiding something, though she didn’t know how to ask.
Finally, after experiencing all the “Happy Plaza” attractions, Qin Yan got off the moon spaceship, face flushed.
She hugged Xia Mingtang and kissed her smooth forehead.
“Wife, thank you for helping me fulfill a wish I’ve had for a long time.”
Xia Mingtang felt slightly embarrassed by such sincere words. It was just accompanying her in a park; no need to be so serious.
Not noticing Xia Mingtang’s inner thoughts, Qin Yan continued.
“Actually, I’ve wanted to come here for a long time. But Mom said these rides are too childish, and I should be doing more meaningful things.”
Hearing her speak so calmly about the past, Xia Mingtang felt a pang of heartache.
Back then, Qin Yan was just a child, naturally playful. But this nature had been stifled early on.
It made Xia Mingtang realize that the grown-up Qin Yan’s sometimes eccentric personality might be related to her early experiences.
In comparison, Xia Huaying was truly a rare, open-minded parent.
Xia Mingtang held Qin Yan’s hand, smiling reassuringly.
“How could that be childish? I’ve been to many parks from childhood to adulthood, and there are plenty of people in their twenties and thirties there. We enjoyed it just fine.
“Next time, I’ll take you somewhere more fun, with newer attractions.
“You’ve just been discharged, so there’s no need to rush and do everything at once. We’ll have plenty of time later.”
“Plenty of time later…” Qin Yan murmured, but in her heart, she thought:
But why do I always feel… if I don’t come now, I’ll never have another chance?
