- Chapter 29 - Couldn’t Hold Back
“ASch conformity experiments Asch conformity experiments were designed and conducted by American psychologist Solomon Asch in 1951.”
In the classroom, Li Nianyi was giving a theoretical experiment lecture to a group of young undergraduates. The PPT was inherited from her senior sister. This semester, she had the task of being a teaching assistant, which fell on her shoulders. Fortunately, her Japanese was fluent and standard enough, so even simple lecturing was no problem.
“This experiment is very interesting in my opinion. The results show that about 75% of participants conformed at least once, choosing the wrong answer that matched the group.”
While she was lecturing, her sharp eyes caught a familiar figure sneaking in through the back door.
It was Jiang Ji.
Li Nianyi found it amusing; it was the first time she saw Jiang Ji acting so sneaky, even pretending seriously by wearing a baseball cap and a black mask. It looked somewhat cute.
That woman crouched in the back row, eyes fixed straight on Li Nianyi at the podium, blinking at her every so often when their gazes met.
Li Nianyi smiled and pretended not to see, ignoring her signals.
The class had to continue.
“The choices of the group are easily shaped and manipulated. 36.8% of people would rather ‘play blind’ than go against the group. In other words, if someone can control public opinion, they can, to some extent, control the entire group they belong to.”
This teaching style seemed to be well received by the young students. Many were eager to raise their hands and ask questions. After all, most students who voluntarily choose psychology likely have some mysterious and somewhat dramatic fantasies about the subject.
For example, after learning psychology, they believe they can become the high-IQ characters in movies who can read minds and manipulate people.
The course was gradually coming to an end.
Li Nianyi closed her lesson plan: “For homework, you may form groups freely and design an experiment based on today’s content. Submit your reports before next class.”
The bell rang on time. Many students rushed to ask Li Nianyi questions. She was surprisingly popular among these young juniors, who all sweetly called her “senpai.”
After the crowd dispersed, Jiang Ji pouted and awkwardly clung to her.
“Nian Nian, you’re so popular at school.”
Her tone was a little plaintive, but more like a proud “My girlfriend is so amazing.”
“Do you like it?” Li Nianyi raised an eyebrow with a smile.
“Like it!” The tall figure nodded vigorously, pressing her cheek against Li Nianyi’s arm. Standing over 1.75 meters tall, she shamelessly hung on Li Nianyi like a clingy dog.
Since officially becoming a couple, Jiang Ji no longer showed the icy and cool side she once had. She stuck to Li Nianyi all day, calling her “Nian Nian” over and over.
Of course, that so-called ice queen trait only worked on others; in front of Li Nianyi, she was completely under her control.
And Li Nianyi was perfectly fine with it.
A few students passing by saw their beautiful senior with an equally dazzling woman standing close by, their intimate behavior making them glance over.
In Japan, this level of closeness already exceeds normal boundaries for same-sex friends.
“No way… Is she… your girlfriend?” asked a girl who was somewhat familiar with Li Nianyi.
Li Nianyi took Jiang Ji’s wrist, interlaced their fingers, and held up their hands boldly.
“Yes, she’s my girlfriend.”
Li Nianyi smiled sweetly, and Jiang Ji unconsciously curved her eyes with a silly expression.
Girlfriend what a wonderfully happy word.
“Why did you think of coming to school to pick me up today?”
The two held hands walking on the playground. Though it was still early in the semester, the autumn chill was already noticeable. Li Nianyi wore a thin knitted cardigan, but Jiang Ji, robust and strong, still wore a sleeveless top.
“I finished work early today. Not much to do, so I thought I’d come find you directly.”
Recently, Jiang Ji had been very busy. She said that the family business had many orders to handle. However, Li Nianyi wasn’t very interested in these matters. She also saw that Jiang Ji wasn’t particularly willing to take over the Saionji family affairs, and had said several times that after Li Nianyi graduates, she would follow her back to their home country.
“Do you want to eat at home tonight or go out?”
Li Nianyi tightened her grip on Jiang Ji’s hand; she seemed to particularly like holding her hands, always unconsciously squeezing Jiang Ji’s fingers when they did so.
Jiang Ji learned from her and squeezed back.
“Let’s go out. We can go sing karaoke tonight. You said you wanted to try it before.”
“You remembered that from just casually saying it.”
Jiang Ji looked down at their toes. “Because it’s what you want to do. I want to accompany you.”
Li Nianyi kissed Jiang Ji’s cheek contentedly.
“Okay, I’ll listen to you.”
Under her influence, Jiang Ji became more straightforward not the unknowing straightforwardness she had before, but able to directly express her feelings and emotions to Li Nianyi.
Hearing Jiang Ji’s honesty, Li Nianyi would kiss her soft cheek.
Could this be some kind of alternative classical conditioning?
But between them, it was hard to tell who was Pavlov and who was the dog.
Besides, in Li Nianyi’s view, it didn’t matter. After all, the formation of conditioned reflexes has never been one-sided.
When the two were sweet and happy, they didn’t notice the others. Li Nianyi naturally ignored Mu Yuan Kui, who tried to get closer but stopped at a distance, watching their intimacy with a somewhat displeased expression.
She suddenly remembered who that woman was.
The restaurant was Jiang Ji’s choice, picked from a “Dating Tips” folder she had saved long ago.
It was said to be a top tier restaurant, “The Dining Hall of the Gods,” holding Michelin three stars continuously since 1988, reputed as the origin of French cuisine.
Jiang Ji didn’t recall the fancy titles. As long as Li Nianyi was happy eating, that was enough.
The restaurant’s decor was classic European style, with fresh flowers and candles on the table. Jiang Ji had reserved a table inside, where they wouldn’t be disturbed.
Li Nianyi clicked her tongue, surprised Jiang Ji would bring her to such a place, suddenly feeling serious herself.
She wished she had worn a more glamorous dress.
She glanced at Jiang Ji, who was ordering food, wearing a loose gray tank top, with the black strap of her shoulder visible.
Oh well, compared to others in suits, their casual styles somehow matched.
Jiang Ji pushed the menu to Li Nianyi.
“I already ordered a mango mousse. See if you want anything else.”
Li Nianyi glanced over it black truffle cheese bread, royal spiny lobster, caviar sea bass… The long list of fancy names was enough, and the prices were even longer.
“Order whatever you want. It’s all Saionji family money. I definitely won’t stay at Saionji forever. Might as well spend it now.”
Jiang Ji said seriously, as if discussing something important, but she was just thinking about how to spend someone else’s money.
Li Nianyi agreed and didn’t hold back ordering.
“Order more, Western food portions are small, we need to eat well.”
“Okay!”
Sesame-crusted shrimp only two pieces on a plate, but fragrant and crispy, the meat tight and tender, just enough to savor.
The roasted pigeon breast was good too, but hard to eat. Luckily, neither of them wore makeup; otherwise, the sauce would have been a hassle.
Soufflés were soft and fluffy. They were really delicious, and Li Nianyi couldn’t help ordering several desserts.
When Jiang Ji swiped her card, there was no sound, but Li Nianyi felt as if she heard the cracking of coins breaking so many zeros, even if it was yen.
No time to feel broken-hearted, Jiang Ji dragged her to a karaoke afterward.
Li Nianyi liked singing, but she had never seen Jiang Ji sing before. She was looking forward to it.
“Not sure if they have Chinese songs here.”
Since coming to Tokyo, this was Li Nianyi’s first time karaoke out. She looked a bit excited.
“They do.”
“I want to hear you sing first. You heard me last time.”
“Okay.”
Purple lights shone on Jiang Ji’s profile, giving off an indescribable flirtatious vibe.
In the empty room, blue music started to flow.
Jiang Ji sat at the corner of the sofa, leaning back, legs elegantly crossed. Even with harsh top lighting, she didn’t lose her charm. Her singing was like her speaking gentle, like fine rain lightly touching the skin, causing an itchy feeling.
Why did this woman always captivate her like a witch?
She sang Chen Jingfei’s “Deep Blue,” her velvety low female voice unconsciously tugging at Li Nianyi’s heartstrings.
Maybe the knitted cardigan was too warm, or the dim lighting was suggestive, but she suddenly wanted to kiss Jiang Ji not just a peck on the cheek or a light flutter, but a deep, passionate, almost oxygen depriving kiss.
She really had prepared well, wanting to give Jiang Ji a better experience.
But Li Nianyi still held back.
She listened to Jiang Ji’s song, and that was all.
When Jiang Ji realized it, her eyes were already covered by Li Nianyi’s cool hand, then the soft lips followed, this kiss unexpectedly wild, her nose pressed against Li Nianyi’s cheek, her hands unconsciously stroking the back of Li Nianyi’s neck.
Jiang Ji closed her eyes, her eyelashes brushing against Li Nianyi’s palm.
And thus they sank into each other.
