- Chapter 9 - Do Not Run Too Far
Yan Jue was dazed for a moment, but he quickly recalled what the man had just done to him. He wanted to lash out, but he feared the man might not understand his anger, or worse, that his outbursts Instead, he simply bit his lip and met the man’s gaze with what he considered his most venomous look.might provoke him.
However, in Qi Yelan’s eyes, this venomous glare possessed a strange, charming quality. It made the heart of this old fox, who had lived two lifetimes, soften. He found himself unwilling to trouble the boy further.
After a brief standoff, Yan Jue shifted his body uncomfortably. Being bound and treated like a lamb to the slaughter made him feel extremely uneasy.
“Um, could you please let me go? This is very uncomfortable.”
Qi Yelan agreed with a nod. If he let the boy keep squirming like that, he could not guarantee he would be able to control himself. He raised a finger and recalled the Immortal Binding Rope.
Seeing the blue light fly from his body to the man’s finger and transform into a ring, Yan Jue suddenly remembered. In his memories, that ring was something the original Yan Jue had given to Qi Yelan in their previous life.
He was still wearing it?
Seeing Wen Fuchen staring at the object on his hand, Qi Yelan gently rubbed the ring with his thumb. A flash of memory crossed his mind, and he flicked his sleeve to hide the ring beneath the long fabric.
Once freed from the restraints, Yan Jue curled into a ball and rubbed his numb arms and legs while keeping a wary eye on the man before him.
“From now on, you may come and go as you please, but you are not allowed to run too far. Do not even think about escaping.”
Yan Jue looked up in disbelief. “Really?”
Qi Yelan countered, “What do you think? If you truly want to stay here, I will not stop you.”
Seeing the man’s serious expression, Yan Jue shook his head repeatedly, fearing a misunderstanding. “I did not mean that.”
But he did not understand. Why had Qi Yelan suddenly changed his mind?
As if reading his confusion, Qi Yelan said, “I think you were right. In the mortal world, there should be feelings before intimacy. If you are determined to be unwilling, there is no point in forcing it.”
Qi Yelan paused, then held up three fingers.
“Three months. I will give you three months. If you are still unwilling after three months”
Qi Yelan paused again. Just as Yan Jue thought he would be released after the deadline, the man said, “After three months, you can run away yourself. Run far away, and do not let me catch you again.”
Uh.
A row of black lines flashed through Yan Jue’s mind. He thought this guy had turned over a new leaf, but was this not just a way of saying: “I will give you three months to fall in love with me; if you do not, I am using force”?
“Fine.”
Yan Jue agreed readily. Although he had no intention of developing feelings for Qi Yelan, it at least gave him a buffer period and time to plan an escape.
Yan Jue pointed toward the door and asked cautiously, “Can I leave now?”
“You may.” Qi Yelan waved his hand, and the stone door in the distance slowly opened.
“Then, goodbye, if fate permits.”
Yan Jue cupped his fists, put on his shoes, and hurried off the bed. But as soon as his feet touched the ground, his knees went weak, and he nearly collapsed.
Damn, my legs are like jelly.
Just as he was about to make intimate contact with the floor, a hand appeared out of nowhere and supported his waist, saving him from disaster. After steadying him, the hand used the momentum to flip him around. Before he knew it, he was sitting on the man’s lap.
Qi Yelan smiled. “What? You do not want to leave after all?”
Yan Jue quickly pushed the man’s hand away and stood up. This time he was prepared and landed steadily. He rubbed his empty stomach. It turned out he was just hungry. He had slept for a long time and felt mentally refreshed, but he was physically weak and lacked energy.
“No, I do not.”
With that, he ignored Qi Yelan and turned toward the stone door.
Hurrying out of the sleeping chamber, Yan Jue followed his sparse memories of that night to find the cave exit, only to discover that this place was much larger than he had imagined. The area was lit by burning, eerie blue ghost fires, which looked rather terrifying.
He walked down a corridor, and before he had gone far, he heard footsteps approaching from the distance. Soon, the sound of many footsteps filled the air. Just as he thought he was about to find the exit, a massive open space came into view.
This area was brighter than the rest while being decorated with carved beams and painted rafters. Many alleys branched off from this central space. It was essentially a massive underground palace.
At the same time, he saw the source of the footsteps. As he appeared, everyone nearby looked at him. No, these were not people. They were demons.
Some of these demons were hulking figures clad in full armor, exuding a murderous aura. Others were similar in size to humans but were draped in black cloth. Their expressions were dark and sinister, and they looked like people who had been dead for a long time.
None of them looked like ordinary beings, which was why he recognized them as demons at a glance. For a moment, he felt like there were thorns in his back. These demons seemed to be gathered here waiting for something, and when they saw him, their expressions were quite a sight to behold.
He knew he had taken a wrong turn. Just as he was about to retreat, a voice shouted at him.
“Hey! Stop right there! Who are you? Why did you come out from there?”
Yan Jue looked toward the voice. A hideous, burly demon was staring at him while walking toward him step by step. Yan Jue’s legs felt as though they were pinned to the spot. Fearing the demon might charge, he knew he was no match for him. He could only stand his ground while secretly gathering what little power he had in his palms.
“You are not a demon, are you?” a black-robed human-demon asked while watching coldly from the side.
“Obviously. Look at this kid’s tender skin. If he is a demon, I, Old Monster, will not eat a human for a year, no, for a month.”
The human-demon glanced at him. “You are not a monster anymore. Stop embarrassing our Demon Race, you crude thing.”
Hearing them talk, Yan Jue felt like a piece of prey being discussed. He wanted to slip away quietly and act as if he had never been there. He took half a step back, but a cold glint smelling of blood flew toward him while stabbing into the ground right in front of his feet. It was a long blade stained with foul blood.
His heart began to pound wildly.
“Who said you could leave?” the demon said coldly.
“Do you think the territory of my Demon Race is a place where you can come and go as you please?” He then turned to the human-demon beside him. “These thin arms and legs do not have much meat, but they will do for a pot of soup. How about it? Come to my room for a bowl today.”
“Vulgar.” The human-demon rolled his eyes and ignored him, but the other demons present were also starting to stir.
Looking at those sinister gazes, Yan Jue finally understood the difference between Qi Yelan and these demons. At least Qi Yelan retained some human nature. These creatures were true monsters. Those glinting eyes looked as if they wanted to swallow him whole.
“Arno, I have a bad feeling about this.”
[Yes, obviously. They want to eat you.]
“Quick, think of something! A Freeze Item! Give me a Freeze Item!”
[I am sorry, Host. The Freeze Item can only be used once a month.]
“What?” Yan Jue’s voice nearly cracked.
This was different from before. These guys would actually eat him, and there would not even be a corpse left. This fear was more terrifying than being killed outright. He stared intently at the demons nearby. If he struck and missed, he would be swarmed.
He never expected that after passing Qi Yelan’s hurdle, such a high-difficulty challenge would be waiting for him. Wait, Qi Yelan. Only that man could save him now. But would he?
As he was thinking, a demon in front of him swung an axe at his head. He did not have time to think anymore and raised his hand to block.
“Argh!”
Following a scream, the massive demon flew through the air in a wide arc and crashed into the crowd.
Yan Jue blinked while looking at his palms in disbelief. When did my cultivation become this strong?
Wait. Sensing a familiar aura approaching, he turned his head sharply and saw Qi Yelan, dressed in black, standing behind him. Qi Yelan’s expression was grim. He was not looking at Yan Jue; he was staring at the demons before them.
“What is this commotion? Do you all want to die?!”
