The White Moonlight I Chased, the Divorce I Never Expected - Chapter 59
When Chi Yi said she would get jealous—she meant it.
But more than anything, she felt concerned.
Pregnancy could bring symptoms like nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, fatigue… Even just one of these would be hard on someone as delicate as Wen Ranqing. Chi Yi couldn’t even begin to imagine it.
Chi Zhong had once mentioned that their mother suffered from insomnia during her pregnancy. Chi Yi had never seen Wen Ranqing sleep poorly while by her side, but knowing she had gone through similar struggles in the past, Chi Yi couldn’t help but worry.
Between the dream of having a child and the thought of Wen Ranqing possibly suffering, Chi Yi would always choose Wen Ranqing’s safety and health.
She gently let go of Wen Ranqing’s ear—flushed to near transparency—and tugged firmly at the two loops of the lace bow at her waist. The soft fabric across her flat abdomen drew taut. Chi Yi’s gaze lingered there. She really couldn’t picture this part of her body carrying a child—couldn’t imagine how much pain Wen Ranqing would have to endure.
Would Xiaoyi really get jealous of a baby?
Wen Ranqing clasped her hands in front of her body, letting Chi Yi tighten the waist of her dress. The snug fit only made her curves more alluring. She bit her lower lip gently and leaned in, placing a light kiss on Chi Yi’s chin as if to bargain. “I like Xiaoyi more.”
Her red lips were soft and sweet, still carrying the faint raspberry flavor of the ice cream. Just a glance downward revealed a face that was breathtakingly beautiful. Chi Yi couldn’t help but chuckle at her words. Jealousy was the least of her concerns—any of the other possible outcomes would weigh on her far more.
But Wen Ranqing was so insistent…
“We’ll talk about it later.” Chi Yi leaned down and gave her a gentle kiss—her lipstick was edible, after all. Only when Wen Ranqing’s face turned an even deeper shade of red from the intimacy of the setting did Chi Yi finally take her out to continue shopping.
“This one might be a bit impractical…”
Wen Ranqing was referring to a floor-length lace gown in sable white that Chi Yi had picked out. It really was beautiful—and Wen Ranqing genuinely liked it at first glance. It was just that…
Chi Yi had said they’d be going to an amusement park that evening. Wearing such a long, elaborate gown wouldn’t be ideal for playing or moving around. The intricate patterns and multi-layered design gave it a very formal look.
“Do you like it? Or should we keep looking?” Chi Yi repeated her usual gentle question.
This floor of the boutique carried a variety of luxury brands perfect for Wen Ranqing’s style. This particular store specialized in bridal collections and had a stellar reputation. They still had the whole afternoon to choose.
Chi Yi had only told Wen Ranqing they were going to the amusement park that night. In truth, they wouldn’t be doing much “playing” in the dress at all. There was only one chance to propose, and Chi Yi didn’t want Wen Ranqing to look back on it with even the slightest regret.
The gown was dignified, elegant, and gorgeous—just very different in style from the Bermuda-colored dress Wen Ranqing was wearing today, which she had chosen specifically for their date. She bit her lip and nodded, honestly admitting that she did like the dress.
That afternoon, they returned to the hotel to drop off their many shopping bags, and Wen Ranqing changed into the gown.
The amusement park was divided by country and region, and required reservations a full month in advance to be rented out exclusively. Since Chi Yi had booked it on short notice, it was nearly 6 PM by the time other guests began heading toward the exits.
Wearing her white gown, Wen Ranqing looked serene and noble. Silver earrings glinted subtly beneath her loose, inky-black hair. Her curves were stunning, and the way the dress trailed behind her as she walked gave her a refined, almost traditional beauty.
Her slender, pale hands held a cup of bubble tea, beads of condensation rolling down the sides. As she sipped delicately, her side profile was partly hidden, revealing only her elegant nose. Her eyes shimmered with gentle light, her lips soft and pink. She looked both pure and graceful, with an understated sensuality.
Chi Yi wasn’t the only one who couldn’t take her eyes off her—passersby stole glances again and again.
Walking slightly ahead, Chi Yi reached back and took Wen Ranqing’s soft wrist in hand, casually relieving her of the cool drink to warm it with her palms. Even then, her fingertips still tingled with heat.
Chi Yi knew Wen Ranqing liked quiet places. Wherever Chi Yi wanted to go, Wen Ranqing would follow without complaint or preference—as if being together was enough.
Soon, even the skin of their joined palms began to grow warm. Without Wen Ranqing needing to say a word, Chi Yi gently led her toward the Ferris wheel.
Night had fallen. Inside the bright, spacious cabin, as they slowly rose into the sky, they could see the silhouette of a dark castle in the distance.
Wen Ranqing hadn’t noticed that the amusement park was gradually emptying out. A soft pink blush had remained on her cheeks the entire time, and now that the surroundings were fully lit, Chi Yi could see it more clearly.
Delicate, cool, vulnerable—and quietly endearing.
As the last cabin carrying passengers returned to the platform, Chi Yi gently pulled her closer. Wen Ranqing’s legs were still a little unsteady, so she ended up sinking into Chi Yi’s lap, her voluminous, elegant gown spreading around them.
Chi Yi looked stunning tonight too—wearing a crisp white long-sleeved shirt, the cuffs half-rolled to reveal a vintage calfskin watch that clung snugly to her forearm. It gave her a cool, refined, unmistakably Alpha presence.
Up close, her skin was smooth and flawless. Wen Ranqing felt as if she was the one who always ended up physically exhausted—while Chi Yi worked tirelessly until her eyes could barely stay open. Everything about her radiated the vibrant energy of youth.
Now that they finally had a quiet moment alone, Wen Ranqing gently bit her lip, tucked away her shyness, and leaned closer, hugging Chi Yi’s arm tighter.
Lately, her stamina had been declining, and Wen Ranqing had begun to feel a quiet unease about it.
She’d chosen a more youthful, girlish dress today partly out of that subtle insecurity. Although Chi Yi had never once spared a glance for the bold young women who stared openly at her, Wen Ranqing couldn’t help the flicker of worry that still crept in.
The way her body leaned in drew Chi Yi’s eyes instantly. She had been nervous about the proposal she had planned for tonight—but now, all of that focus had shifted to Wen Ranqing in an instant.
Even if she woke up to her face every day, Chi Yi still couldn’t stop her heart from stirring. She helped smooth out the hem of Wen Ranqing’s dress. “What is it?”
The park was now empty. The cabin was warm and brightly lit, almost at the top of the Ferris wheel. From up here, they had a clear view of the famous amusement park’s dazzling nightscape. Even the faint glow of two stars in the deep violet sky added to the romantic atmosphere.
Wen Ranqing had eyes only for Chi Yi. Her lips brushed lightly against the edge of Chi Yi’s white collar, and she rested her ear just above her heart, speaking in a soft voice:
“Xiaoyi… do you ever think about the age difference between us?”
It was rare for her to feel this kind of quiet melancholy—brought on by something so objective and unchangeable. Even her voice sounded more like a whisper to herself than a question.
It wasn’t when they were in the hotel, curled up together watching art-house romance films with Chi Yi slowly learning to enjoy them, filling their days with quiet, ordinary happiness—no, it wasn’t those moments that made her feel sad.
It was moments like this. When the atmosphere was filled with love and magic, when lovers had the chance to make unforgettable memories, yet Chi Yi always had to think ahead—always had to consider her limitations.
Chi Yi froze slightly at her words, not answering right away.
Sometimes, she thought Wen Ranqing was like a fox—bewitching without meaning to be.
And now, she thought the woman had no idea how foxlike she truly was. Her soft little claws always reached out hesitantly, but never dared to stretch any farther.
Chi Yi’s slender fingers brushed the tassel of her delicate silver earring. She cradled the back of Wen Ranqing’s head and pressed her warm lips against the ones that had smudged lipstick on her collar. The kiss was slow and deep, sweet with the lingering flavor of milk tea.
Wen Ranqing melted into it. Her eyes turned red at the corners, and when the kiss broke, she lay softly against Chi Yi’s shoulder, her entire face flushed in the aftermath.
Outside, the buildings slowly descended past the window. Inside the cabin, the warm air was thick and stilled.
As the Ferris wheel neared the bottom, a faint look of unease returned to Wen Ranqing’s face. This was the one area in which she couldn’t shake a natural sense of inadequacy.
“Why do you carry so many burdens?” Chi Yi took a deep breath to steady her heartbeat. She couldn’t resist placing another soft kiss near Wen Ranqing’s ear before reaching into her shirt pocket.
She pulled out a ring and slowly slid it onto her left ring finger.
Wen Ranqing’s delicate fingers trembled ever so slightly.
The cool, snug touch of the ring was both foreign and familiar. Almost instinctively, her eyes welled up with tears, and for a moment, her mind went completely blank. All she could do was stare at Chi Yi, her gaze full of dazed affection and glistening emotion.
Chi Yi’s voice continued beside her ear—rougher now, slightly hoarse.
“I was going to propose under the castle.”
Chi Yi had lived freely and boldly for twenty years—even on her wedding day, she hadn’t felt emotions as intense as this.
A sudden tightness welled up in Chi Yi’s throat as she looked straight into those dazed, vulnerable peach blossom eyes and continued,
“But someone just worries too much.”
“All I want… is to spoil my wife.”
The Ferris wheel came to a gentle, silent stop.
Those two words—“my wife”—burned like fire against Wen Ranqing’s heart. A single tear slipped from the corner of her eye.
As Chi Yi led her toward the castle, Wen Ranqing’s eyes shimmered with tears. She couldn’t think; she just stared blankly at the slender, graceful figure walking ahead of her.
The castle loomed in darkness—until the first firework burst through the sky, trailing sparks as it exploded overhead. Only then did Wen Ranqing clearly see the brightness in Chi Yi’s pure black eyes, shining like polished obsidian.
Brilliant colors bloomed in the night, their loud bursts filling the air as wave after wave of orange fireworks lit up the sky above the castle.
Wen Ranqing’s lips parted slightly in awe. Beneath the dazzling display, she turned her head and stared in a daze, watching one flower after another bloom in Chi Yi’s eyes. Her tears flowed uncontrollably, and for a moment, nothing else existed.
The castle’s lighting shifted in sync with the fireworks, illuminating the side of Chi Yi’s face. Her gaze was warm and tender. And when Wen Ranqing broke into soft sobs, Chi Yi abandoned the clichéd gesture of kneeling on one knee, and instead gently pulled her into her arms with aching care.
“Jiejie…”
“Wen Ranqing.”
Chi Yi took a ring from Wen Ranqing’s own bag—the very one—and placed it in her palm.
“We made a promise when we were eight.”
“Marry me.”
The ring still carried the warmth of Chi Yi’s chest and palm. Just three months ago, it had sat cold and emotionless by Wen Ranqing’s bedside. And now, it was being returned to her with a heat that could melt through steel.
Chi Yi said—marry me.
The firework show—normally reserved for only the grandest holidays—filled the sky with light. A drone swept in from the distance, fluttering their clothes in its wake. The wonder that had overwhelmed Wen Ranqing back on the Ferris wheel had never left her.
Chi Yi’s voice was low and clear in her ear, yet it trembled with emotion. Wen Ranqing’s eyes blurred with tears. She covered her lips with a trembling hand, unable to summon the strength to respond. Standing just half a step away, she collapsed softly into Chi Yi’s arms, her lashes damp against Chi Yi’s shoulder, trembling.
She still remembered how deeply she had once hated herself—for how low she’d stooped. How she’d used a contract to keep Chi Yi by her side, forcing her into a situation dictated by circumstances. Later, she would sit alone for countless nights, staring at their wedding rings, unable to sleep.
Even though she had imagined how Wen Ranqing might react, Chi Yi’s heart still skipped a heavy beat. A strange sting touched her nose as she gently took Wen Ranqing’s hand and slid the ring onto her finger.
“Xiaoyi…” Wen Ranqing’s voice broke. Her hand was gently lowered, her face streaked with tears. Chi Yi kissed her eyes—then again, their salty tears mixed as they kissed.
The drone slowly drifted away, and the evening breeze lifted the strands of hair around Wen Ranqing’s ear, revealing a face still glowing with surprise and enchantment—beautiful, and not yet fully recovered from the overwhelming moment.
Chi Yi couldn’t help the way her lips curved up. She leaned in and whispered:
“You have to call me ‘wife.’”
Her lips parted slightly—and those two words came so easily.
“Wife.”
Wen Ranqing pressed close to her. Her heart felt full—overflowing—and a deep blush spread all the way from her neck.
Love so deep was also unbearably shy. She couldn’t speak, couldn’t bring herself to say it out loud, her lips opening and closing without a word.
“Madam? Or Mrs. Chi?” Chi Yi teased softly. The earlier nerves were now replaced with grounded joy. She wrapped her arms around Wen Ranqing’s shoulders, holding her as if she could press her into her very soul.
“Let’s just stick with ‘wife,’ shall we?”
She kissed Wen Ranqing’s ear, closed her eyes, and listened to the sound of the fireworks.
“I really want to get our marriage certificate right now.”
“Wife.”
