The Villainous Sister-in-law Mistakenly Marked as the Heroine (Transmigration) - Chapter 51
Early the next morning.
Lin Qile took a half-day off to accompany Rong Jing for her medical records registration and prenatal check-up.
The registration process was straightforward.
He Yan looked at the computer screen and sighed, “All set. Go ahead and take your forms for the ultrasound.”
The two arrived at the ultrasound room.
Rong Jing lay on the bed.
The doctor applied gel to her abdomen and pressed the ultrasound probe against her lower belly. As it moved, the fetus gradually appeared on the screen. “Look, this is your baby.”
This wasn’t Rong Jing’s first prenatal check-up, so she was no longer as awed by the sight of the baby, though she did notice the child had grown a bit more.
But for Lin Qile, the moment was indescribably overwhelming.
She stepped forward, staring at the image of the fetus.
At four months, the baby had already developed facial features, though they weren’t yet clearly distinguishable. It lay peacefully in the womb.
“Lin Qile, want to take a look yourself?”
He Yan handed her the probe.
After a brief hesitation, she took it and glanced back at Rong Jing. In each other’s eyes, they saw the nervous excitement of first-time mothers.
“Thank you, Rong Jing.”
This growing life wasn’t just her flesh and blood, it was a soul-deep connection.
Lin Xinrou was also family, but the daughter Lin Xinrou loved so deeply wasn’t purely her. Not that she felt any resentment, after all, this was maternal love she had borrowed from the original body.
Rong Jing averted her gaze and muttered a warning, “Don’t hurt me.”
“Don’t worry!”
Sitting in front of the machine, she carefully adjusted the probe. The baby’s image sharpened, and she excitedly described its features to Rong Jing. “Look, that’s her nose, and here’s her mouth… She’s going to be as beautiful as you!”
“How can you tell at this stage?”
Lin Qile insisted, “I just know! This is our baby!”
Rong Jing wanted to tease her, but seeing her so exhilarated, she swallowed her sarcastic remarks.
After the check-up, the two left the hospital. Lin Qile still felt like she was floating.
Rong Jing tapped her with the report. “What’s with the daze?”
“Nothing. It just doesn’t feel real yet, I’m actually going to be a mother.”
“Hmph. The driver’s here. I’m heading to the office. Don’t forget to send the baby’s photos to your mom.”
“Got it. Be careful on your way back.”
She watched Rong Jing’s car drive off before returning to her department.
She wanted to share her joy with He Yan but saw her rushing out with another doctor.
As she passed by, He Yan called out, “Lin Qile, keep an eye on Bed 13. We’re heading to Cardiology for a consultation.”
“Got it.”
The two hurried off. Walking past the nurses’ station, she overheard two nurses gossiping.
“I saw a bunch of reporters. Maybe it’s true!”
Curious, she leaned in. “What’s true?”
“Dr. Lin!”
“I just got back. What’s the gossip? Let me in on it.”
One nurse lowered her voice. “Rumor has it a big celebrity was admitted.”
“Who?”
“No idea. But the ER nurses said there’s a crowd of paparazzi at the entrance. Who else would attract that many reporters?”
A call bell rang, and the nurses scattered to work. Lin Qile returned to the doctor’s office, musing to herself.
A celebrity?
Is there another juicy scandal brewing?
Back when she was a doctor, she had heard plenty of gossip. During her rotation in the infectious diseases department, she encountered several big celebrities coming in for treatment. Those who appeared pure and righteous in public might have been wilder than anyone behind closed doors.
He Yan didn’t return until almost the end of her shift.
After briefing her on Patient 13’s condition, He Yan lowered her voice to gossip, “Everyone’s buzzing about a big celebrity being hospitalized. You weren’t the one consulted for that, were you?”
He Yan smirked mysteriously.
“That’s right.”
Her eyes lit up. “Spill the tea!”
“An old acquaintance of yours.”
“Huh?”
He Yan leaned in closer. “Do you know who that celebrity is?”
She leaned back slightly and, seeing the strange smile on He Yan’s face, already had a name in mind. “Rong Wanning?”
“Smart!”
“What happened to her?”
“Rong Wanning suffered severe internal injuries and had already miscarried. When she was brought in, she was nearly in shock.”
Lin Qile was stunned into silence for a long moment.
“It’s very likely domestic violence because from the moment she was admitted until now, Ji Zhao’s phone has been unreachable. I could only notify Rong Jing, she’s probably on her way.”
“Rong Wanning was beaten so badly she miscarried? My god, that’s just unreal.”
“System!”
She called out to the system in her mind.
[Host, I’m here.]
“Does Ji Zhao have violent tendencies? She’s the protagonist, how can she be violent? No wonder this book needed me to save it.”
[Actually, Rong Wanning wasn’t beaten by Ji Zhao. She fell down the stairs accidentally during an argument with Ji Qian.]
“Then why hasn’t Ji Zhao shown up? Rong Wanning just had a miscarriage!”
[Ji Zhao is with her mistress.]
Damn!
Is being a scumbag contagious? Qi Song was like this, and now Ji Zhao too?!
She texted Rong Jing: [Are you coming to the hospital to see Rong Wanning?]
[Yes.]
[Be careful there are a lot of paparazzi lurking around the hospital.]
[Got it.]
After a while, Lin Qile texted again: [When you arrive, come find me in the internal medicine department first. I’ll go with you.]
[Hmm?]
[It’s unlikely Ji Zhao’s people won’t show up at all. I’m worried you might run into them.]
Rong Jing sat in her car, her fingertip hovering over her phone screen. A faint smile curled her lips. “Afraid I can’t handle them?”
Lin Qile couldn’t help but feel a little resentful. “You still want to fight for Rong Wanning? Why are you so good to her? I’ve been waiting on you hand and foot like a eunuch serving an emperor, and I’ve never seen you throw a punch for me!”
The moment she sent the complaint, she regretted it but it was too late to take it back.
Would Rong Jing read too much into it?
But that was genuinely how she felt. The first time they met, Rong Jing had punished her harshly for the sake of her niece, Rong Wanning.
She hadn’t held a grudge back then, but if Rong Jing still wanted to stand up for Rong Wanning after everything that had happened, she really…
She really couldn’t help feeling unbalanced.
“Qile, come here for a second.”
“Coming, Dr. Chen.”
Quickly putting away her phone, she hurried out of the office.
Before her shift ended, she helped the doctor organize a few more medical records.
After clocking out and changing, she had just stepped out of the internal medicine department when she spotted Rong Jing sitting on a chair, scrolling through her phone.
“Rong Jing?!”
Rong Jing looked up. “Off work?”
“Why are you here?”
Rong Jing shot her a look. “Didn’t you tell me to wait for you so we could visit Rong Wanning together?”
“……”
She strode forward, her eyes brimming with joy.
Rong Wanning tilted her head, looking at her with a smile in her eyes, “Are you jealous?”
“Jealous? Jealous of what?”
She immediately stammered, avoiding Rong Jing’s gaze as she walked out, “Let’s go, we’re heading to the obstetrics and gynecology department.”
The two arrived at the obstetrics and gynecology department, at Rong Wanning’s VIP ward.
Just as they were about to push the door open, they heard arguing inside. They exchanged glances and hesitated to enter immediately.
Inside the room, Rong Wanning had an IV in her hand, bandages wrapped around her head, and a cast on her arm. Her face was devoid of color as she glared at Ji Zhao with hatred.
“Ji Zhao, I’m not Lin Xinrou. If you dare to keep a mistress behind my back, I won’t let you off!”
This statement almost directly labeled Ji Qian as the mistress.
Ji Zhao’s expression instantly darkened, “Rong Wanning, who are you calling a mistress?”
“Wasn’t your mother a mistress?! If she wasn’t, why would she encourage you to hide that woman from me? You all dote on the child of a mistress, going to great lengths to protect her, even playing tricks on me!”
Stung by the accusation, Ji Zhao retorted loudly, “Rong Wanning, that’s going too far!”
“Too far?! Your mother, Ji Qian, pushed me down the stairs, and I lost my baby. All she does is hide, and I feel like killing her!”
“If you dare hurt my mother, I won’t let you off!”
Rong Wanning stared at her, then suddenly laughed after a moment, “Not let me off? Ji Zhao, how exactly won’t you let me off? I must have been blind to have ever known you. Before marriage, it was all an act. You’re just like Qi Song both of you are scum! Scum!”
“In that case, let’s get a divorce.”
Rong Wanning froze.
Ji Zhao sneered, “If I’m such a terrible person in your eyes, then there’s no point in sticking together. Divorce it is.”
“Fine, let’s divorce!”
Rong Wanning roared, hurling a pillow at Ji Zhao.
Bang!
Ji Zhao flung the door open and saw Lin Qile and Rong Jing outside.
Her face turned ashen, “Enjoying the eavesdropping, ladies?”
“Quite. Though the words were rather mild compared to the shameless things you’ve done.”
“Lin Qile!”
Furious, Ji Zhao raised her hand to strike. This time, Lin Qile was prepared, she’d press charges for assault the moment Ji Zhao laid a hand on her.
But before Ji Zhao could touch her, another hand intercepted.
Slap!
Rong Jing coldly stated, “Want to spend a few days in jail?”
Ji Zhao’s face twisted in anger, “Don’t get cocky, you two. There’s plenty of time ahead, we’ll see!”
Ji Zhao stormed off.
Lin Qile quickly grabbed Rong Jing’s hand, “That was loud, did it hurt? Why did you intervene? With surveillance everywhere, if she’d hit me, I could’ve had her locked up longer.”
Rong Jing pulled her hand back, “Sacrificing eight hundred to kill a thousand, only fools do that. If you ever use yourself as bait again, I’ll kill you first!”
After the warning, she pushed open the ward door.
“Got it. I just acted on impulse.”
Stepping into the ward, Lin Qile was shocked Rong Wanning on the hospital bed looked nothing like the woman she’d first met.
He Yan’s suspicion of domestic abuse wasn’t unfounded.
“Auntie…”
Seeing Rong Jing, Rong Wanning burst into tears.
“Waaah, I was wrong, so wrong. Ji Zhao deceived me all along. She… she betrayed me, waaah… I want a divorce!”
Rong Jing looked her up and down with a hint of amusement. “Did Ji Zhao give you all those injuries?”
“No.”
“Then what happened?”
Rong Wanning hesitated, opening her mouth as if to speak, but when she saw Lin Qile standing beside her, she held back. “Auntie, can I just tell you alone?”
Quickly, Lin Qile wrapped her arm around Rong Jing’s, intertwining their fingers, then turned to Rong Wanning, whose face was flickering between pale and flushed. “I’m also your aunt, you know.”
“You!”
Rong Jing glanced down at their tightly clasped hands.
Lin Qile’s heart was in turmoil, terrified that Rong Jing might snap at her with a “Get lost.”
Just as she debated whether to save herself the embarrassment and leave first, Rong Jing spoke instead. “If you don’t want to talk, we’re leaving.”
Her heart leaped with joy.
The two turned to go.
“Auntie, I’ll tell you!”
Rong Jing led her to the sofa and sat down. “Go on.”
After a moment of hesitation, Rong Wanning finally spoke slowly, “Last time, I caught Ji Zhao cheating that other woman was even pregnant. We made a huge scene at the Rong family home. Ji Zhao promised me she’d make the other woman get rid of the baby and cut ties with her for good.”
“Cheating only happens zero times or infinite times.”
Rong Jing shot Lin Qile a glare. “Shut up.”
Lin Qile pressed her lips together helplessly.
Surprisingly, Rong Wanning didn’t argue this time. “You’re right. She lied to me. The baby wasn’t aborted, and she never ended things with that woman. I saw Ji Qian out shopping for baby supplies with her, so I went to confront Ji Qian. But she” Her voice broke. “She said if I could accept the child, she’d still acknowledge me as her daughter-in-law. If not, I should get lost!”
Rong Wanning choked back a sob. “We started arguing. Ji Zhao showed up, but she didn’t take my side. During the fight, Ji Qian pushed me, and I fell down the stairs.”
After pouring out her grievances, she looked tearfully at Rong Jing.
“Auntie, I was blind before, fooled by Ji Zhao’s sweet talk. You have to help me!”
Rong Jing lifted her gaze, her expression calm. “How do you want me to help you?”
The question left Rong Wanning speechless.
