The Villainous Sister-in-law Mistakenly Marked as the Heroine (Transmigration) - Chapter 34.2
Sitting by the hospital bed, Lin Qile watched as her unconscious mother continued to shed tears. She sighed, picking up a tissue to gently wipe them away. “You need to let go sooner rather than later. That scum isn’t worth your heartbreak.”
Two IV drips later, Lin Xinrou still hadn’t woken up.
Lin Qile stood and stepped out of the ward.
The afternoon had been chaotic, with too much happening at once. The confrontation with Qi Song had torn all pretense apart. Although Lin Corporation belonged to her mother, the company had virtually no loyalists to their family. She had no idea what would happen tomorrow.
Qi Song had schemed and bided her time for years, she wouldn’t just give up her plans because her true colors had been exposed. What underhanded tactics would she resort to next?
Leaning against the wall, Lin Qile closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
Suddenly, her phone rang. It was the housekeeper from home.
“Qile, what’s going on? I just got back and saw Madam sending people to take all her things away!”
“Everything?”
“Yes. I asked, but Madam wouldn’t say anything. Did she and your mother have a fight?”
Lin Qile let out a cold laugh. “No. From now on, don’t call Qi Song ‘Madam.’ She doesn’t deserve it!”
“What happened?”
“She’s been cheating, she has a mistress and a child. While Mom’s not home these next few days, arrange for a thorough cleaning of the entire villa. We need to get rid of the bad energy.”
“Understood.”
Hanging up, Lin Qile took another deep breath before returning to the ward.
Lin Xinrou was awake now, lying in bed silently crying. When she saw her daughter enter, she choked out, “Sweetheart…”
“Cry. Let it all out. Then cut ties with Qi Song for good.”
“I don’t want to.”
Don’t want to?!
Lin Qile’s eyes widened. “What do you mean you don’t want to?”
Lin Xinrou curled up, sobbing uncontrollably. “W-why would A-Song do this…? I loved her so much… We never even fought…”
“That was all an act.”
“No, she was so good to me… hic… We were so happy…”
Watching her mother cry until she was gasping for breath, Lin Qile could only feel a headache coming on.
She had thought that heartbreak would bring clarity, but she had underestimated the power of a lovestruck mind.
“Qi Song and Ji Qian never ended things. They’ve been in contact all these years. Ji Zhao is their illegitimate daughter. Qi Song even placed her in the company, nurturing her with meticulous care. Mom, she didn’t just cheat, she wants her illegitimate child to inherit Lin Corporation! To replace us with that mistress and her daughter. After all that, you still love her?”
Lin Xinrou looked at her through tear-filled eyes. “No… she sob, she wouldn’t do that.”
“Enough!”
Rubbing her throbbing temples, Lin Qile paced around the ward.
She was wrong, she shouldn’t have expected too much from someone love-struck. She’d have to figure things out herself!
“The nanny just called me. Qisong has already moved all her things out.”
Lin Xinrou froze.
She pressed harder: “Mom, you’re still clinging to over twenty years of feelings, but who knows if she’s already shacked up with the other woman? You can either wallow in misery or pull yourself together and fight to take back everything that belongs to our Lin family!”
“I just want the three of us to be happy together.”
“Even if she has another family out there? Even if she’s stolen everything from our home to give to another woman, you still don’t care?”
Lin Xinrou didn’t say a word, only silently began to cry.
She didn’t speak again, just quietly stayed by Lin Xinrou’s side.
Only when Lin Xinrou had cried herself to exhaustion and fallen back asleep did she finally leave the hospital room. Glancing at her watch, she saw it was already 9 p.m.
She headed to the hospital cafeteria, intending to buy some food for Lin Xinrou, but everything was closed.
Just as she was wondering what to do, a voice called out to her.
“Lin Qile?”
She turned to see Wu Xue standing not far away, holding a stack of documents. Spotting her, Wu Xue quickly approached. “It really is you! I thought I’d mistaken you for someone else.”
“What a coincidence.”
Wu Xue lifted the documents in her hands. “My uncle is a doctor at this hospital. I’m about to start my internship. Why are you here?”
“My mom isn’t feeling well. She’s hospitalized.”
“Ah… I—is she okay?”
She forced a smile. “She’s fine. Just overworked and fainted. Once she wakes up and rests properly, she’ll be fine.”
“That’s good.”
Wu Xue clutched the documents, fingers fidgeting. She wanted to ask for Lin Qile’s contact info this time but worried it might seem too forward. Just as she was hesitating, Lin Qile spoke up: “Wu Xue, do you know where I can buy food around here? Neither my mom nor I have had dinner yet.”
Wu Xue’s eyes lit up. “I do! I’ll take you.”
“Thanks, I appreciate it.”
Wu Xue led her out of the hospital and into a nearby alley. “This place is full of food stalls. I used to live around here and came often as a kid.”
“So you’re from a family of doctors.”
“I—”
Before Wu Xue could explain, Lin Qile had already walked up to a congee stall. “One bowl of century egg and pork congee, please.”
After buying the congee for Lin Xinrou, she wasn’t particularly hungry herself, but she knew she had to eat something, so she grabbed a steamed bun on a whim.
Just as she was about to leave, the shop’s large TV caught her attention, it was broadcasting the news.
“According to inside sources, Lin Corporation appears to be facing a financial crisis, with severe internal losses. Following the news, Lin Corp’s stock has already dropped by 4 percentage points as of this report.”
The bun slipped from her hand and fell to the ground.
Wu Xue asked worriedly, “Lin Qile, what’s wrong?”
“It’s nothing. I have to go, thanks for today.”
Clutching the congee, she ran out while dialing Rong Jing’s number.
But the call wouldn’t go through.
In the midst of her failed attempts, Xu Jiao suddenly called. “Qile, what’s going on with your family? Why would Rong Jing tell the media that your company is failing?”
She froze. “Who did you say told the media?”
“Rong Jing! My dad mentioned it, he happens to be friends with the reporter. The source confirmed it themselves.”
Lin Qile’s mind buzzed.
Rong Jing leaked it?
Indeed, as long as Qi Song hadn’t divorced her mother, Lin Corporation remained their shared property. Ruining the company would do Qi Song no good.
During this time, she had practically handed over all the company’s confidential data to Rong Jing.
“System.”
[Host, I’m here.]
“Did I lose the bet? I was the one who brought Rong Jing into Lin Corporation. She’s the ultimate villain, Qi Song cheated on her mother, humiliating the woman she loved most. There’s no way she’d let go of revenge.”
The thought that she herself might be the one to destroy Lin Corporation and leave Lin Xinrou with nothing sent a shiver down her spine.
[Host, don’t lose heart. You’ve built a good relationship with Rong Jing over this time. You can definitely change her mind about revenge.]
“Can I?”
She lowered her gaze to her phone.
Rong Jing wasn’t even answering her calls anymore.
Their fake marriage had only been a means for Rong Jing to exact revenge on Qi Song. Now that the revenge was complete, she probably wouldn’t spare another thought for her, a mere stand-in, a blow-up doll.
How had she forgotten, after just a month of peaceful coexistence, that Rong Jing was this world’s ultimate villain? How had she let her guard down?
She crouched on the floor, overwhelmed.
For some reason, she suddenly felt exhausted.
[Host, don’t give up.]
“Lin Qile, what’s wrong?”
She looked up to see Wu Xue’s concerned expression. “You ran off so suddenly. You haven’t eaten dinner, so I bought you something. I was almost afraid I wouldn’t catch up to you.”
Wu Xue smiled faintly, lifting the food in her hand.
Not wanting to show her vulnerability, Lin Qile stood up. “It’s nothing.”
“Really? We’re both medical students, we shouldn’t ignore symptoms. You look terrible.”
She forced a smile. “Really, I’m fine. Maybe I just haven’t eaten in too long.”
“Then take this.”
Wu Xue handed her the food. “I know it must be hard with someone in your family being sick, but you have to trust modern medicine. No matter what it is, it can be treated.”
“Yeah.”
“Could I… visit your mom? If it’s not convenient, don’t force yourself. I just thought, since you seem upset, I could keep you company. If you need to talk, I can be your sounding board.”
Wu Xue’s ears turned red with nervousness.
“Of course you can. But my mom’s in a bad mood, if you don’t mind that.”
“Of course I don’t.”
The two walked toward the inpatient ward together.
When they reached the room, Lin Xinrou was still asleep. Lin Qile moved quietly, placing the congee on the table and tucking the blanket around her mother before leading Wu Xue back outside.
They sat on a bench in the hallway as Lin Qile nibbled on a bun.
Wu Xue spoke first. “Can I ask what’s wrong with your mom?”
“She trusted the wrong person. It broke her heart.”
Seeing Wu Xue’s surprise, she chuckled. “Not a joke, it’s the truth. But you’ll probably see the gossip online soon enough. I’d rather not say more.”
“Oh… heartbreak. Modern medicine really doesn’t have a cure for that.”
“Yeah. It just has to heal on its own.”
Wu Xue watched her profile as she ate, her heart pounding. “Lin Qile.”
“Just call me Qile. No need to be so formal.”
“Okay. Qile.”
Maybe it was the weight of her emotions, but Lin Qile suddenly felt like chatting like back in school, when stress would drive her to sit on the lawn with classmates and talk about nothing in particular.
“Wu Xue, why did you choose to study medicine? Among the people I know, very few omegas go into this field.”
Wu Xue clasped her hands together. “It’s because of a childhood regret. My parents died in a car accident on the highway when I was only ten. The ambulance took too long to arrive because heavy snow had blocked the mountain roads, and my parents didn’t make it due to incorrect first aid measures.”
Lin Qile stopped eating and looked at Wu Xue in surprise.
“I’m sorry for bringing up such a painful memory.”
“Don’t be sorry. It’s been over ten years. I believe my parents are watching over me from heaven, and knowing that I’ll become a doctor who saves lives would make them proud.”
Lin Qile gazed at her and spoke with utmost sincerity, “Keep going. I believe you’ll become a doctor who saves lives.”
“Can we exchange contact information then?”
“Sure.”
The two lowered their heads to swap details. Just as they finished, a familiar scent of pheromones drifted through the air.
Lin Qile turned around and saw Rong Jing standing not far away, holding a sheet of paper, her cold eyes fixed on them.
“Seems like even the sky falling wouldn’t stop you from flirting.”
Lin Qile frowned slightly.
She stood up. No matter how much Qi Song schemed against her, it didn’t hurt because Qi Song was an enemy. But she had never considered Rong Jing an enemy. Even after learning her true nature, she had chosen to trust her!
And yet, she had lost miserably.
The thought filled her with frustration, and her tone carried anger. “I thought you wouldn’t show up again now that you’ve achieved your goal.”
“Goal?”
“Lin Corporation is in crisis, its stocks plummeting wasn’t that your plan?”
Rong Jing’s expression turned icy. “So you believe Qi Song’s words too? That I helped you just to take over Lin Corporation?”
No. You wanted to destroy Lin Corporation to get back at Qi Song.
But she hadn’t lost her senses enough to say that out loud.
Provoking Rong Jing now would be the worst possible move.
She could only remain silent.
“Lin Qile, you’re really something.”
Rong Jing turned and strode away. Only after getting into her car did she crumple the 4D ultrasound image in her hand and toss it onto the passenger seat. “I must be insane.”
She had scheduled the ultrasound with He Yan that afternoon.
She had kept her pregnancy a secret from everyone, so her prenatal check-ups were always arranged at times when no one else was around.
Today, seeing that tiny bean sprout of an embryo on the ultrasound, she had suddenly felt an impulse.
Tell Lin Qile.
Maybe the two of them…
Could be good mothers.
But when she arrived at the hospital with hopeful anticipation, she saw Lin Qile being intimate with an omega who clearly had feelings for her.
She must have been out of her mind to even consider telling Lin Qile about the pregnancy.
Out of her mind to have secretly helped Lin Qile.
And in return, the other person saw her as nothing but an enemy.
With a self-deprecating laugh, she started the car and drove away from the hospital.
