A good night’s sleep.
Chi Yingdong was awake but didn’t want to get up, snuggling under the covers with the kitten.
The calico cat pressed against her chest, a tiny ball of warmth that radiated heat like a self-heating hand warmer.
Bored, Chi Yingdong scrolled through her phone. The screen’s flickering light cast shifting shadows across her delicate face, obscuring the expression in her eyes.
The apocalypse had just begun, and the communication networks hadn’t collapsed yet. Her phone could still connect normally to Weibo and Douyin.
Weibo and Douyin were already in chaos and panic.
Chi Yingdong opened a trending post on Weibo, where a user had shared a video.
The zombies in the video had eerily pale gray skin.
On areas with less subcutaneous fat, like the neck and arms, black venous patterns were clearly visible, resembling twisted earthworms.
The camera shifted upward, focusing on the zombies’ horrifying eyes.
Their irises had faded into a murky color, pupils dilated to fill the entire eye sockets, empty and chilling.
Their movements were stiff and unsteady, yet they pursued humans with a frantic determination.
The person filming was running wildly while letting out terrified screams.
The sharp cries attracted more zombies toward him.
In the latter part of the video, the camera shook violently.
It was clear the filmer was running out of stamina, and the zombies were getting closer and closer until the video abruptly ended.
Chi Yingdong frowned slightly, her fingers lightly swiping to the next video.
This time, the filmer was a mother, and the subject was a young boy who had just started elementary school.
The boy’s mother spoke from off-camera, her voice trembling but unable to hide her excitement, “Sweetie, try it again.”
Hearing his mother’s words, the boy obediently raised his index finger.
In an instant, a small flame appeared at his fingertip out of nowhere.
The mother cheered excitedly, quickly zooming in to show the tiny flame.
“Look, everyone! My child, it seems he’s awakened an ability!”
However, as soon as she finished speaking, the flame flickered unsteadily, growing and shrinking before finally extinguishing.
The boy had just awakened his ability and couldn’t yet control it skillfully.
“Ability users,” Chi Yingdong murmured softly, her emotions complex.
In the apocalypse, only a small minority awakened abilities; most people remained ordinary.
Although the zombies in the early stages of the apocalypse were terrifying, they moved slowly and stiffly. Ordinary humans could still handle them if they were brave enough.
But in the mid-apocalypse…
Chi Yingdong closed her eyes, her thoughts returning to the moment before her death in her previous life.
She had perished in a horde of Level 2 zombies. The appearance of a Level 2 horde meant there was a more powerful driver behind it, a zombie no lower than Level 3.
Level 2 zombies showed significant improvements in movement speed and physical toughness, requiring ordinary humans to work together to take down just one.
What would Level 3 zombies evolve into? Would they awaken abilities like humans? Everything remained unknown.
What everyone did know was that, at that time, the number of human ability users who had reached Level 3 could still be counted on one hand.
It seemed as though the heavens favored the zombies over humanity.
Chi Yingdong instinctively stroked the kitten’s back, vowing silently to herself.
For her own sake, and for the kitten in her arms, she must strive to enhance her abilities and find a glimmer of hope in this apocalypse.
Meng Qinghe, thoroughly enjoying the petting, felt a tingling sensation along his spine. Unable to resist, he rolled over, exposing his soft, white belly.
With sparse fur on its belly, the kitten could clearly feel the warmth of Chi Yingdong’s palm.
After a brief moment of tenderness, Chi Yingdong threw off the covers and got up.
The room was heated, so she didn’t feel cold. She walked to the window and drew back the curtain, revealing a layer of white mist on the glass.
She reached out and wiped away a small patch of the mist.
Outside, raindrops fell in an unbroken chain, ceaselessly.
It was the kind of rainy day she disliked, especially a rainy winter, which always stirred up some unpleasant memories.
Deprived of the gentle strokes, Meng Qinghe scrambled up as well.
A tiny figure standing on the bed, she stretched her front limbs forward lazily, her round eyes brimming with contentment.
Seeing Chi Yingdong heading to wash up, the little calico trotted after her on short legs.
With Chi Yingdong’s help, she washed her paws and wiped her little face clean.
Meng Qinghe then sashayed over to the cat’s wardrobe, struggling with her small paws to pull it open.
Chi Yingdong understood and helped open the wardrobe.
Inside was a dazzling array of tiny cat clothes, neatly arranged from the smallest to the largest sizes, ensuring the kitten would always have something to wear even as she grew.
Among the many outfits, Meng Qinghe chose a green fleece shirt.
The back of the shirt was adorned with a yellow tail spike, mimicking the shape of a dinosaur.
The reason for choosing it? It looked fierce.
As she dressed the kitten, Chi Yingdong couldn’t hide the laughter in her eyes.
The kitten, with her adorable little face, now wore a dinosaur hood.
It gave off the vibe of a child trying on adult high heels, utterly endearing.
Chi Yingdong pulled out her phone, wanting to capture this adorable moment.
Kittens grow quickly, so she had bought the dinosaur outfit in every size, from the largest to the smallest.
What she wanted to record wasn’t just the kitten in the outfit, but the kitten at this very moment.
When her gaze met the camera lens, Meng Qinghe suddenly grew restless.
Her body began to move awkwardly, her limbs out of sync, and the comical sight made Chi Yingdong burst into laughter.
Fortunately, the photo session didn’t last long, allowing Meng Qinghe to quietly breathe a sigh of relief.
Chi Yingdong carefully reviewed the photos she had taken, selected the ones she thought were best, and connected to the printer to print them out.
She handed the printed photos to the kitten.
With a smile, Chi Yingdong praised, “You’re so adorable, sweetie.”
In the photo, the kitten’s tension and unease in front of the camera were clearly captured, her tiny features stiff with nervousness.
But this didn’t detract from her cuteness in the slightest, it only made her even more endearing.
Meng Qinghe propped herself up on Chi Yingdong’s forearm with her little paws and leaned in to look at the picture.
In the past, Meng Qinghe had never been documented like this and didn’t understand what the experience felt like.
She also couldn’t comprehend why so many people longed for their partner to record the little moments of their lives.
But in this moment, she understood.
Even though the world is vast and filled with countless beautiful sights, in the other person’s eyes, there is only you.
It’s the feeling of being openly, unabashedly favored.
And she loved it!
Chi Yingdong placed the photos into an album for safekeeping. Seeing the once-blank album now filled with color, she silently resolved to fill it completely.
After storing the album away, Chi Yingdong felt a pang of hunger.
The kitchen fridge was stocked with ingredients, but preparing them seemed like too much trouble. She decided to make do with a simple bowl of egg noodles.
As Chi Yingdong busied herself in the kitchen, the kitten obediently stationed herself at the doorway.
The dinosaur hood nearly covered the kitten’s entire head. From Chi Yingdong’s perspective, she looked like a matcha-flavored daifuku.
Remembering that the kitten hadn’t eaten either, Chi Yingdong scolded herself for being so engrossed in taking photos that she forgot such an important matter.
The water in the pot hadn’t boiled yet, so it was the perfect time to open a can of food for the cat.
“Sweetie, what would you like for breakfast? How about some canned food? We’ll have something better when we get back tonight.”
“Meow.”
The kitten nodded in an almost human-like manner and followed Chi Yingdong to the cat’s dining area.
Meng Qinghe knew that Chi Yingdong planned to go out today, so unlike before, she didn’t take a bite and glance around, worried about making a mess.
By the time Chi Yingdong returned to the kitchen, the water had just come to a boil. She skillfully added the noodles to blanch them.
After the egg noodles were cooked, the two of them settled down to eat their breakfast, separated by half the living room.
Five minutes later, Chi Yingdong placed the empty bowl into the dishwasher.
Turning around, she noticed bits of meat stuck to the kitten’s whiskers and fetched a pet wipe to gently clean its mouth.
Meng Qinghe was already accustomed to this routine.
She stood obediently in place, waiting for Chi Yingdong to come over and wipe her mouth.
The pet wipe glided over the kitten’s cheeks and the tip of her nose.
The kitten’s nostrils twitched, it was a matcha-scented wipe. The scent had changed.
But what remained unchanged was the faint citrus fragrance of the hand soap on Chi Yingdong’s hands.
After cleaning the bits of meat from the kitten’s face, Chi Yingdong couldn’t resist picking her up and cuddling for a while.
Realizing that it would soon be noon if she didn’t leave, she reluctantly set the kitten down.
Changing into a practical windbreaker, Chi Yingdong debated whether to carry the kitten in a backpack-style pet carrier or a front-carrying one.
In the end, she chose the front-carrying carrier, as it would allow her to keep a closer eye on the kitten’s condition.
With the kitten securely fastened, the two of them left home.
The apocalypse had erupted in the dead of night, a time when most people were resting at home. Only a few zombies wandered around the residential complex.
Chi Yingdong noticed that most of these zombies were still clad in work uniforms.
Even in their zombified state, they clutched their briefcases tightly, clearly having fallen victim to the disaster just after returning home from work.
Zombies in the early stages of the apocalypse were relatively easy to deal with—ordinary weapons could take them down. But Chi Yingdong’s goal for this outing was to train her supernatural ability.
Spotting a zombie rushing toward her from a distance, Chi Yingdong activated her power.
A crystalline, diamond-shaped ice spike gradually formed in her palm. She aimed her palm at the zombie and thrust her arm forward forcefully.
The ice spike shot toward the zombie like an arrow released from a bow.
It pierced the zombie’s head with precision. Chi Yingdong clenched her fists nervously, only relaxing when the zombie slowly collapsed backward, letting out a long sigh of relief.
Her ability was water-based, widely regarded as the most useless among natural elemental powers.
In some supernatural squads, first or second-tier water ability users were often relegated to the role of human faucets.
Transforming water into ice and using it as a weapon was something Chi Yingdong had only grasped in this lifetime.
It was precisely because of this that she found it hard to hold a grudge against Qiao Ying.
In her previous life, without Qiao Ying’s protection, her ability would likely have forced her into being a mere tool.
In this life, Chi Yingdong had been practicing solidifying water at home all along.
But this was the first time she had used an ice spike to attack a zombie. The result far exceeded her expectations, filling her with pleasant surprise.
Passing by the fitness and leisure area in the complex, the eerie silence made Chi Yingdong pause.
In the past, even on the coldest winter mornings, as long as it wasn’t raining…
This place used to always gather a group of spirited uncles and aunts, who would practice Tai Chi and Baduanjin while chatting about daily life.
But from today onward, it would never happen again.
Overnight, times had changed.
Compared to the residential area, the streets were noticeably more chaotic.
Colorful cars were scattered haphazardly, some so badly damaged they were unrecognizable, with airbags deployed.
Fragments of buildings littered the ground, and twisted guardrails lay crookedly on the pavement, hinting at the dangers of the previous night.
Chi Yingdong walked expressionlessly past the overturned cars. Through the windows, she could see zombies inside, clawing and struggling desperately to break free.
She paid them no mind, walking purposefully toward the shopping mall.
The mall was located in a bustling area. Since late-night food stalls appeared after midnight, the foot traffic hadn’t decreased even after the mall closed.
The closer she got to the mall, the more zombies there were.
Chi Yingdong avoided them whenever possible, conserving her energy as much as she could. When evasion was impossible, she swiftly eliminated the zombies.
Stopping outside the mall, she peered through the glass doors. Since the mall closed at 10 p.m., there were almost no zombies inside.
Chi Yingdong placed her hand on the glass, and it quickly frosted over before cracking outward from her palm.
Once inside the mall, she began storing everything she could into her space.
After the seawater flooded in, everything in the mall would be ruined. Rather than letting it go to waste, she might as well take it now.
