- The Villainous Female Side Character Pretends to Be an Omega in the Apocalypse and Raises a Cat
- Chapter 3 - Peace Locket
Chi Yingdong noticed that the kitten particularly loved the floor-to-ceiling window, likely because it could bask in the sunlight while napping there. To accommodate this, she had a flower-shaped cat tree custom-made for the little feline.
The winter sun was gentle, not harsh, filtering through the glass and softly illuminating the kitten as it slept soundly on the cat tree.
Stretching lazily, the kitten awoke from its dreams, its tiny paws gently kneading the soft cushion in a rhythmic motion.
Since becoming a cat, her behavior had grown increasingly feline-like, often unconsciously slipping into kneading mode.
After a while, Meng Qinghe felt satisfied and sauntered leisurely over to the water fountain to take a drink.
Life now was simple and delightful.
No longer needing to rack her brains over writing, she could sleep, eat, and then bask in the sun before dozing off again. Though her days felt utterly unproductive, she found herself completely immersed in this leisurely existence.
As the apocalypse drew nearer, Chi Yingdong spent less and less time at home, busily stockpiling various supplies.
With just seven days left until the end of the world, Chi Yingdong decided to make a trip abroad to see if she could acquire some firearms.
Watching the kitten lounging lazily on the cat tree, Chi Yingdong felt a twinge of regret for buying it. She absolutely refused to admit she was jealous of a cat tree.
Before, the moment she stepped through the door, the kitten would rush over, circling around her and clinging to her affectionately.
Nowadays, when she called the kitten over, it couldn’t even be bothered to lift an eyelid to glance at her.
Is this how all cats are?
Chi Yingdong shook her head helplessly and scooped the kitten into her arms.
As she stroked the kitten’s round, plump belly, a sense of pride welled up inside her, she had raised the kitten well.
Remembering that the kitten disliked cat food, Chi Yingdong couldn’t help but feel that the seafood she had stored in her space was insufficient. She could stock up on more during this trip.
With this in mind, Chi Yingdong gently shook the kitten’s paw.
“Good baby, Mommy has to go out tomorrow to take care of some business. I’ll be back in about two days. You have to be good while I’m away, okay?”
“Meow.”
No!
Meng Qinghe lifted her head, her emerald-green round eyes glaring at Chi Yingdong with displeasure.
She didn’t want to be apart from Chi Yingdong for too long!
Over the past couple of days, Meng Qinghe hadn’t rushed to cling to Chi Yingdong, feeling embarrassed by how overly attached she had become.
But deep down, she truly cherished such intimate moments.
Meng Qinghe thought that if she were in her original body, she would never act so willfully.
She was afraid that being too clingy would annoy others.
But now, she was a kitten.
With someone doting on her, she had the privilege to be willful.
“Be good,” Chi Yingdong gently scratched the kitten’s chin.
Listening to the kitten’s contented purring, her soul seemed to find a sense of belonging in that moment.
“Meow.” Meng Qinghe, feeling both embarrassed and annoyed, nibbled on Chi Yingdong’s finger, lightly grinding her teeth before turning her head away stubbornly.
This kitten body was just too weak!
Merely having her chin scratched made her go limp and powerless.
In a spot where Chi Yingdong couldn’t see, Meng Qinghe’s round eyes narrowed sneakily as she secretly enjoyed the sensation.
“I’m going out to prepare food for you,” Chi Yingdong coaxed.
From her observations over the past few days, Chi Yingdong had noticed that the kitten had a particular fondness for seafood. Naturally, she wanted to stock up on plenty of it for the little one.
Once the apocalypse arrived, humans would be the first to show abnormalities.
Soon after, seawater would flood the land, tsunamis would engulf cities, and survivors would flee in all directions. The bodies of zombies in the cities would become food for marine life.
Following that, marine life would also begin to undergo terrifying mutations.
The entire world would descend into endless chaos.
Chi Yingdong calculated that since nothing had happened yet, she should buy some deep-sea fish to raise in her space, making it convenient for the kitten to eat later.
Was this to find food for herself?
Meng Qinghe rested her little head against Chi Yingdong, her small paws secretly clutching Chi Yingdong’s clothes.
Since her grandmother had passed away, no one had ever worked so hard just to make her happy without expecting anything in return.
“Meow.”
Then go ahead, but make sure to come back early.
…
The next day, Chi Yingdong left home under Meng Qinghe’s watchful gaze.
With nothing to do, Meng Qinghe jumped onto the cat tree and began grooming herself aimlessly.
Even though she had lived alone for so long before, why did it feel so different now?
As the sun rose in the east and set in the west, Meng Qinghe grew bored enough to start patrolling the house.
Though she had the body of a kitten, her mind was still human, and Meng Qinghe maintained a strong sense of boundaries.
Having been in this home for quite some time, she had only ever stayed in the common areas, never setting foot in Chi Yingdong’s private space.
Almost as if guided by some unseen force, Meng Qinghe found herself pacing to the door of Chi Yingdong’s bedroom.
Chi Yingdong’s bedroom door wasn’t completely shut. Peeking through the crack, Meng Qinghe was surprised to discover that the style of Chi Yingdong’s room was completely opposite to the rest of the house.
The entire bedroom was dominated by dark tones, appearing gloomy and oppressive, making one feel a weight on their chest.
A room’s decor often reflects a person’s inner thoughts, and Meng Qinghe couldn’t help but feel that Chi Yingdong shouldn’t prefer such a setup.
Unable to figure it out, Meng Qinghe simply assumed Chi Yingdong wanted her bedroom to be more stain-resistant.
Shaking her tail, Meng Qinghe turned and slowly walked away.
Chi Yingdong returned a day later than the two days she had promised.
Meng Qinghe was extremely displeased about this!
She decided to give Chi Yingdong a little punishment.
Meng Qinghe gracefully leaped onto the curtain rod, her four paws gripping it steadily.
The velvet curtains concealed her body, leaving only her small head visible.
Her round, bright eyes shifted mischievously, closely following Chi Yingdong’s movements. Seeing Chi Yingdong search the entire house for her and even mimicking a kitten’s “meow” to coax her out, Meng Qinghe felt quite proud of herself.
But she didn’t know.
Chi Yingdong, who had awakened her supernatural abilities early, possessed senses far sharper than an ordinary person’s.
The moment she stepped through the door, Chi Yingdong noticed an unusual sound of air movement near the curtains and instantly realized the kitten was hiding there.
When it came to the kitten, Chi Yingdong had endless patience.
If the kitten wanted to play hide-and-seek, she would play along.
Meng Qinghe’s tail wagged happily behind her.
Watching Chi Yingdong anxiously rummaging through every corner, the little kitten confirmed that she was super important in Chi Yingdong’s heart.
The little kitten decided to forgive her.
Gathering strength in her hind legs, Meng Qinghe aimed for her pre-selected landing spot and leaped gently.
This jump startled Chi Yingdong, who hurriedly reached out to catch her.
It was this action that made Meng Qinghe realize Chi Yingdong had known where she was hiding all along.
The earlier anxious act was just a performance to make her happy.
What a meanie!
The kitten was angry!
Turning her back, the kitten’s already fluffy tail puffed up like an oversized feather duster.
Gazing at the kitten’s furry back, Chi Yingdong sighed softly and walked over, crouching down beside her.
“I’m sorry, baby, I shouldn’t have come back late.” With that, Chi Yingdong pulled out a cat collar from her pocket, a golden peace lock. “This is an apology gift for you, baby.”
At the word “gift,” Meng Qinghe’s ears twitched, and his tail wagged happily behind him.
Seeing this, Chi Yingdong’s lips curved into a slight smile as she handed the golden peace locket to the kitten.
The craftsmanship of the peace locket was exquisite, with intricate patterns carved into it. The character for “fortune” was plump and round, bringing joy to anyone who looked at it.
Meng Qinghe was very pleased. He lifted a paw and gently tapped the three small bells hanging from the locket.
Strangely, the bells made no sound.
Puzzled, the kitten looked up at Chi Yingdong.
Chi Yingdong explained, “Cats have very sensitive ears. If the bells were constantly ringing, it wouldn’t be good for the baby’s hearing.”
“Meow.”
Understood.
The kitten glanced at the collar, then lifted its neck high, signaling for Chi Yingdong to put it on.
Chi Yingdong fastened the collar around the kitten’s neck. As her fingertips brushed against the peace locket, her gaze deepened.
When she had the locket made, she had instructed the craftsman to embed a tracking chip inside. Even if she were ever separated from the kitten, she could still find it through satellite positioning.
Peace locket, peace locket.
Chi Yingdong trusted herself more. She was determined to keep the kitten safe for its entire life.
“Are you hungry, baby? Do you want some canned food?”
Chi Yingdong took out a can of cat food and waved it in front of the kitten, trying to catch its attention.
“Meow.”
Meng Qinghe snapped out of his thoughts and looked at the can.
There were many abandoned stray kittens in the urban village. Meng Qinghe had felt sorry for them before and bought cans to feed them. At the time, he found the smell of cat food pungent and overwhelmingly fishy.
But now that he had become a cat, smelling the cat food again, Meng Qinghe suddenly understood why kittens loved canned food so much.
It really was fragrant!
“Meow!”
I want some!
Chi Yingdong gave the kitten an affectionate look, then stood up and fetched a small pink plate with a ruffled edge.
The opening of the can was too small, so it was easier for the kitten to eat if she poured the food out.
Just then, her phone on the table vibrated, the screen lighting up with an incoming call.
Chi Yingdong glanced at the caller ID, swiped the screen to answer, and pressed the phone between her left shoulder and cheek.
Her hands continued working, emptying the can onto the plate.
It was a call from a real estate agent.
“Hello, Miss Chi. The apartment on the top floor of Building B has been successfully transferred. The previous owner has already moved out. You can move in anytime, Miss Chi. The door code is 778569.”
“Mm, okay.”
A few days before the apocalypse officially broke out, some people had fallen into comas due to fevers. At first, everyone thought it was just a dangerous case of viral flu.
However, when these people woke from their comas, they had turned into zombies that only craved human flesh and blood.
Before the survivors could catch their breath, a torrential downpour began. At first, people held onto hope that the rain would stop soon.
No one expected it to rain for an entire month.
The city’s drainage system, overwhelmed by the relentless rain, collapsed completely.
Residents on the lower floors watched helplessly as the water levels rose rapidly, flooding their homes, while the rain outside showed no signs of letting up.
Even more terrifying, seawater began to surge inland, swallowing most of the city.
The building Chi Yingdong currently lived in had 32 floors.
In her previous life, more than half of the floors in this building had been submerged by the flood. Residents from the lower floors had scrambled upward in a desperate bid to survive.
Recalling her previous life, when a crowd had gathered outside trying to break in, Chi Yingdong felt grateful she had chosen a sturdy door during the renovation. Without it, given her physical condition back then, she might not have survived long enough to embark on the northern migration later.
After reflecting on her past experiences, Chi Yingdong decided to move out that very day.
The real estate agent had informed her that the owner of the 32nd-floor unit had already moved out. Chi Yingdong decided to check the place out herself and, if possible, relocate immediately.
Placing a dish of food in front of the kitten, she said, “Sweetie, I’ll be out for a bit. Be good, okay.”
Meng Qinghe looked up at her with a puzzled expression and let out a soft “meow” in response.
Chi Yingdong returned shortly after leaving. The 32nd-floor unit was indeed vacant, and the agent had already arranged for a cleaner to tidy it up. It was ready for immediate occupancy.
Since she had to move sooner or later, Chi Yingdong decided to do it today. “Sweetie, we’re moving today,” she announced.
“Meow?”
Meng Qinghe was confused. They had been living comfortably, why move so suddenly?
The original story centered around Qiao Ying and the delicate female lead, with Chi Yingdong and Qiao Ying embarking on the northern migration right from the start. The events before that were only briefly mentioned in later conversations between Qiao Ying and the female lead, with no detailed setup by Meng Qinghe.
Thinking the kitten was reluctant to leave, Chi Yingdong asked, “Do you prefer it here, sweetie? But this place isn’t safe enough.”
The apocalypse had struck suddenly, and few had stockpiled food at home. Supplies ran out quickly. Some ventured outside to search for resources, but zombies floated in the water, lunging at anyone who stepped into it. Compared to the dangers inside the building, the threats outside were on a completely different level.
To survive, those without food began looting supplies from their neighbors.
Living on the 32nd floor wouldn’t entirely eliminate the risks, but it would be much safer than the 19th floor.
Using her spatial ability, Chi Yingdong moved all their belongings to the top-floor unit in one trip.
Top-floor apartments were hard to sell, so the developer had thrown in a rooftop terrace, which now belonged to Chi Yingdong.
As soon as her paws touched the floor in their new home, Meng Qinghe curiously began exploring.
An opening in the ceiling led to a retractable ladder accessing the rooftop terrace. Meng Qinghe climbed up to take a look.
The previous owner had been a person of refined tastes, enclosing the rooftop with tempered glass and transforming it into a sky garden.
Few flowers bloomed in winter, but the fragrance of the wintersweet alone was enough to fill the entire garden.
Basking in the warm winter sun, taking a nap in this sky garden would be utterly delightful.
With that thought, Meng Qinghe did just that, finding a lounge chair, she curled up and settled down for a rest.
While the kitten slept, Chi Yingdong busied herself inspecting and reinforcing their new home. She even called a technician to replace the door for added security.
