- Chapter 2 - Stockpiling Supplies
Early the next morning, Chi Yingdong woke up early, ready to go out and purchase supplies.
With only 14 days left until the apocalypse arrived, every minute and second was incredibly precious, not to be wasted.
Under the floor-to-ceiling window, Meng Qinghe was curled up into a round pancake in the pink cat bed, sleeping soundly and contentedly.
Seeing that the kitten was still asleep, Chi Yingdong deliberately softened her footsteps, but the sound still roused the kitten from its dreams.
After a whole night of mental struggle, Meng Qinghe had gradually come to accept the bizarre reality of having turned into a cat.
Watching Chi Yingdong, who was wearing a simple gray hoodie and bending down to change her shoes, clearly about to go out, Meng Qinghe instantly perked up.
She quickly dashed to Chi Yingdong’s feet, grabbed the hem of her pants with her small paws, and clumsily but persistently began climbing upward.
Meng Qinghe wasn’t sure whether Chi Yingdong would choose to take her along or simply brush her paws aside and leave her at home.
Still, she decided to take the gamble.
After all, she wasn’t truly a kitten and didn’t want to be confined at home all the time.
She also wanted to explore this new world.
“Baby, do you want to come out with me?”
Chi Yingdong looked down at the kitten clinging to her pant leg, her tone gentle but tinged with hesitation.
She picked up the kitten and gently stroked its back.
In her mind, terrifying scenes from the apocalypse played out frame by frame.
If the kitten could adapt to the outside environment sooner, maybe it wouldn’t nearly die from stress like in the previous life? Spared unnecessary suffering?
Thinking this, Chi Yingdong decided to take the kitten along.
Carrying the kitten, Chi Yingdong went down to the underground parking garage. The kitten stayed obediently in her arms the whole way, and Chi Yingdong marveled inwardly at how well-behaved her baby was.
Opening the back car door, she placed the kitten on the seat, then picked up the seatbelt, hesitating over whether to buckle it for the kitten.
Meng Qinghe stared at the seatbelt, momentarily stunned.
Do kittens really need to wear seatbelts in the car?
Chi Yingdong had the same doubt, but she remained outwardly calm. Sticking to the principle of safety first, she buckled the seatbelt anyway.
Hearing the click of the seatbelt locking into place, Meng Qinghe thought, So kittens really do have to wear seatbelts in the car.
After securing the kitten, Chi Yingdong returned to the driver’s seat, started the engine, and the car slowly left the underground parking garage.
At first, Meng Qinghe watched the scenery flying past outside the window with great interest, inwardly confirming that this world was largely similar to her original one.
But as time passed, Meng Qinghe stiffly shifted her arm, staring blankly at the back of the front seat, inwardly sighing at how tiring car rides were.
Her kitten butt was sore from sitting!!
What’s worse, kittens don’t have phones, so she couldn’t pass the time by playing on one, she could only sit there idly, lost in thought.
“We’re here.”
To Meng Qinghe, Chi Yingdong’s voice sounded like a heavenly melody.
With a click, the seatbelt was unfastened, and before Meng Qinghe could react, Chi Yingdong leaned over and lifted her out of the car.
Meng Qinghe had prepared herself to be carried the whole way, stealthily finding a comfortable position to relax and leaning fully on the other.
However, all she heard was Chi Yingdong’s soft chuckle before an arm lifted her and placed her securely on Chi Yingdong’s shoulder.
The sensation of being suspended made Meng Qinghe instinctively raise her paws to hold onto Chi Yingdong’s head, afraid she might fall.
Chi Yingdong was amused by the kitten’s flustered expression and tilted her head slightly to look at it, her eyes carrying a hint of pride and affection.
“How’s this spot? Great view, right?”
The kitten pretended not to understand, thinking to itself that this person was quite mischievous.
Meng Qinghe leaned against Chi Yingdong’s head, curiously observing their surroundings. They were in a bustling, large-scale farmers’ market, filled with the noise of crowds and rows of stalls.
The kitten couldn’t help but wonder, what were they doing here?
Before it could figure it out, Chi Yingdong navigated through the bustling crowd and headed straight for the market manager’s office at the far end.
After three knocks, a voice from inside called out, “Come in.”
Chi Yingdong pushed the door open and got straight to the point. “Uncle Chen, long time no see.”
“Ah, it’s Xiao Dong! Come in, come in, have a seat.”
At first, Uncle Chen didn’t recognize Chi Yingdong, but once he got a clear look at her face and remembered who she was, he warmly welcomed her.
Before Chi Yingdong’s parents passed away in a plane crash, they had helped Uncle Chen.
Because of this debt of gratitude, Chi Yingdong had chosen to come to this market, having someone to assist her was much easier than searching for suppliers on her own.
“Uncle Chen, I came today to ask for your help. You’ve been running this farmers’ market for years and know it inside out, who has the best goods and who doesn’t. I need to source a batch of supplies right now.”
As she spoke, Chi Yingdong handed over her list. “Please help me gather everything on this list. I only want the highest quality. Once it’s done, I’ll pay you an extra 500,000 yuan as a reward.”
Meng Qinghe, perched on Chi Yingdong’s shoulder, could clearly see every item on the list.
It was densely packed with all sorts of supplies, from rice, flour, and cooking oil to canned goods and dried foods, even medicines and daily necessities, as well as cat litter and toys for the kitten. The quantities required for each item were substantial.
The kitten was startled, why did this feel like stockpiling for the apocalypse?
Meng Qinghe couldn’t help but wonder if she had somehow transmigrated into a post-apocalyptic novel.
Impossible!!
She quickly dismissed the thought.
It must be because she had been writing a post-apocalyptic novel lately, making her see signs of the end times everywhere.
Uncle Chen took the list and skimmed through it quickly, mentally calculating how much extra commission he could pocket from the vendors. His smile grew even more sincere. “No problem. If you don’t mind me asking, what are you planning to do with all this?”
“It’s for export. I’m planning to open a large supermarket overseas.”
Chi Yingdong replied without batting an eye, her tone carrying an air of unwavering confidence.
Uncle Chen found the explanation a bit far-fetched, but remembering the favor he owed and the profit he stood to make, he decided not to press further.
“The quantity is quite large. It’ll take about two and a half days to gather everything. Once it’s all ready, where should we deliver it?”
Chi Yingdong had already considered this question before coming. Calmly, she provided an address, exchanged a few more pleasantries with Uncle Chen, and then left the office.
After exiting the farmers’ market, Chi Yingdong didn’t head straight home.
Instead, she visited several large restaurants, placing orders for about a hundred tables of banquets at each.
Just when Meng Qinghe thought they were done, Chi Yingdong went to a snack street and placed bulk orders for various snacks and milk tea.
Chi Yingdong spent lavishly. Though the shop owners were puzzled by her large orders, they swallowed their questions for the sake of the money.
Witnessing the entire process, Meng Qinghe’s suspicions grew deeper and deeper.
All signs indicated that she had most likely truly transmigrated into an apocalyptic world.
Just as panic began to rise in Meng Qinghe’s heart, another thought occurred to her: judging by Chi Yingdong’s hoarding spree, she was clearly the female lead with a personal space in a novel.
As the female lead’s beloved pet cat, wouldn’t she get to follow the female lead and dominate the apocalypse?
Meng Qinghe immediately calmed herself down.
Perhaps assuming the cat couldn’t speak, Chi Yingdong never hid anything in front of her.
Meng Qinghe quickly confirmed that Chi Yingdong possessed a space, which further convinced her that Chi Yingdong was the female lead, after all, how could a side character have such an overpowered cheat ability?
Faced with the impending apocalypse, Meng Qinghe no longer felt fear.
She imagined the female lead wreaking havoc in the apocalypse, beating zombies until they wailed, while she herself only needed to act cute and pampered to coast along to victory.
Just thinking about it made Meng Qinghe feel exhilarated.
Having returned from the apocalypse, Chi Yingdong knew well that survival required more than just supplies, it also demanded the ability to protect them.
Chi Yingdong purchased another batch of fitness equipment, determined to improve her physical strength through training during this period.
Back home, Chi Yingdong couldn’t wait to try out the new fitness gear.
Turning her back to the cat, she changed into form-fitting yoga clothes. The soft, stretchy fabric clung tightly to her skin, accentuating her graceful figure.
Seeing Chi Yingdong change clothes, Meng Qinghe pretended to cover her eyes with her fluffy paws, but her round eyes peeked curiously through the gaps.
She couldn’t help but marvel inwardly: as expected of the female lead, her face looked so innocent, yet her figure was completely mismatched.
The cat lazily sprawled on the floor, watching Chi Yingdong run, her gaze fixed on the sweat droplets forming at the tip of Chi Yingdong’s nose. Seeing the beads slowly fall, she thought, “She’s really working hard!”
Glancing down at her own paws, which weren’t even as big as a ping pong ball, the cat suddenly felt a surge of competitive spirit.
Walking up to the sandbag, the cat crouched, gathered strength in her hind legs, leaped up with all her might, and threw a “kitty punch” at the sandbag with her right paw.
However, the imagination was full, but reality was stark.
Her short little paw didn’t even reach the edge of the sandbag, and she nearly stumbled from the excessive force.
Meng Qinghe: “…”
The air seemed to freeze, time standing still at that moment.
Meng Qinghe felt her face burning, she had just humiliated herself, hadn’t she?
The cat hung her head, ears drooping.
Noticing from the corner of her eye that Chi Yingdong was too busy to pay attention to her, the cat stood up expressionlessly, took small, hurried steps to a sunny corner, curled into a ball, closed her eyes, and pretended to sleep.
For several days in a row, Chi Yingdong went out every morning to purchase supplies, went to the warehouse at noon to store them in her space, and returned home in the evening to train.
Gradually, Meng Qinghe lost interest in going out, mainly because car rides were too exhausting for a cat.
