- Chapter 77 - Snow White and the Wicked Stepmother
Yun Can’er said, “Qiqi, Ningning isn’t my stepmother. She hasn’t registered her marriage with my dad. The wedding was held just to cover their tracks so Ningning could take care of me openly.”
Lu Qiqi spent a long while processing this on the other end of the line before asking, “How did you two even end up together?”
With a blush, Yun Can’er replied, “Ningning is incredibly good to me, and I slowly fell in love with her…”
“But you’re only eighteen, and Ning Xiao is six years older than you!” Lu Qiqi said crossly, “Did she trick you? Did she confess to you first?”
Yun Can’er quickly clarified, “No, it was me. I confessed first. I was the one who fell for Ningning first, it had nothing to do with her. Besides, I’m eighteen now, I’m an adult. I’m capable of distinguishing my own feelings. Qiqi, I’m serious about Ningning.”
Lu Qiqi relented slightly, “Fine, I can’t stop you. But you two need to watch yourselves. You can’t go too far, do you hear me?”
Yun Can’er: “…I’ll try.”
Lu Qiqi’s voice turned suspicious, “You guys haven’t already done it, have you?”
“Um… we did, but I was the one who forced Ningning. We already confessed, so how could we just stop at kissing? So, I tied her up while she was sleeping…” Yun Can’er conveniently omitted the part where Ning Xiao had eventually pinned her back down.
Lu Qiqi gasped, “Can’er, so you’re the one on top?!”
Thinking about how Ning Xiao sometimes let her be on top and how comfortable the movements were from below, Yun Can’er said, “That’s right.”
Lu Qiqi was utterly speechless, “I have only two words for you: pure respect.”
Yun Can’er accepted the praise graciously, “By the way, Qiqi, don’t tell anyone else about this yet. I only told you because you’re my best friend.”
Lu Qiqi promised, “Don’t worry, I’ll take it to my grave. I won’t tell a soul.”
After hanging up, Yun Can’er saw that Ning Xiao had already driven the car into the school grounds.
Before getting out, Yun Can’er leaned over to the driver’s seat and kissed Ning Xiao. “I’m going now,” she said reluctantly.
“I’ll come pick you up tonight.”
As Yun Can’er opened the car door, Ning Xiao suddenly remembered something she hadn’t mentioned yet and quickly called her back.
“Can’er!”
Yun Can’er turned around, her large, ink-black eyes blinking curiously.
Ning Xiao took Yun Can’er’s hand and said, “The wedding date has been set. October 2nd, during the National Day holiday. Does that work for you?”
“Is that the earliest date?” That was Yun Can’er’s only concern.
Ning Xiao nodded with a smile, “Yes.”
Yun Can’er said, “That works. Let’s go register our marriage during the holiday~”
Yun Can’er got out of the car, walked to the driver’s side window to say goodbye to Ning Xiao, and then headed toward her dormitory.
Ning Xiao watched her leave and then stepped out of the car herself. She planned to finish the paperwork for Yun Can’er’s major change before she left.
Yun Can’er returned to her dorm to change into her camouflage uniform and hurried to the playground for assembly.
As soon as her classmates saw her, they immediately crowded around to check on her.
“Can’er, are you okay?”
“I don’t know which shameless person was so jealous of you that they claimed you were bullying students.”
“No kidding. How could Can’er ever do something like that? I just hope that dark-hearted person gets exactly what they deserve.”
These words were spoken quite loudly, causing Qi Xiashan, who was standing not far away staring coldly at Yun Can’er, to turn pale with anger.
Chu Ling, Feng Manman, and Yun Can’er were perfectly fine, but Zhai Li had not returned since being called away.
Qi Xiashan had asked several people, but everyone said they had no idea what happened to her. She was starting to feel increasingly uneasy.
She admitted she hadn’t thought things through when she made the report. It was an impulsive move, but surely she couldn’t be blamed for Zhai Li’s failure to return, right?
Excusing herself in her mind, she quickly pushed thoughts of Zhai Li aside. Her only real worry now was whether Wang Di would come looking for her.
Fortunately, there had been no news from Wang Di all morning. She figured that out of respect for her parents, Wang Di probably wouldn’t hold it against her.
Just as Qi Xiashan breathed a sigh of relief, she saw Yun Can’er surrounded by a caring crowd again, and her jealousy flared up uncontrollably.
She walked over, pushed into the crowd, and asked Yun Can’er loudly, “Yun Can’er, do you know what happened to Zhai Li? She was called away by the counselor yesterday and hasn’t been back since. Zhai Li is our classmate, after all. If you know something, you really ought to tell us.”
Yun Can’er started, “Zhai Li…”
Qi Xiashan interrupted impatiently, “How is she? I heard that out of the three of you in that dorm, only Zhai Li doesn’t have a powerful background. Is she scared and afraid to testify against you, which is why the three of you were allowed back?”
As soon as Qi Xiashan finished, someone spoke up crossly, “Hey! Qi Xiashan, what kind of nonsense are you talking? If you can’t say anything nice, just shut up!”
“Now that I think about it, it was Qi Xiashan who said Can’er was bullying Zhai Li yesterday. You weren’t the one who snitched behind her back, were you?” Everyone’s suspicious gazes landed on Qi Xiashan.
Panicking, Qi Xiashan immediately snapped back, “How is that possible? I’m not even close with Yun Can’er, why would I report her?”
She had made her motives too obvious, and even though she defended herself, it was useless. In their hearts, everyone had already marked her as the snitch.
Just as Qi Xiashan stood there unable to clear her name, Zhai Li returned.
She looked much paler. The crowd around Yun Can’er dispersed, and someone went over to ask what happened, but Zhai Li didn’t answer.
She looked up and saw Qi Xiashan, her eyes instantly filling with pure hatred.
Zhai Li ran up to Qi Xiashan, grabbed her collar, and shouted furiously, “Was it you who reported me! Qi Xiashan! I never thought you were the type of person to stab someone in the back!”
All of Zhai Li’s hatred was now directed at Qi Xiashan.
If it weren’t for Qi Xiashan reporting Yun Can’er out of jealousy, Yan Shanxue wouldn’t have remembered her past and sent people to investigate. Normally, even if they found something, they might have let her off out of respect for her uncle, Vice Principal Zhai.
But because of Qi Xiashan, because of this woman, Yan Shanxue had shown her no mercy!
The school’s decision would be out in less than a week, and by then, it would be nearly impossible for her to stay at Hai University.
Zhai Li’s entire future was ruined, and Vice Principal Zhai might even be penalized because of her. She now deeply regretted ever becoming friends with Qi Xiashan.
In a sudden burst of strength, Zhai Li lifted Qi Xiashan right off the ground. Qi Xiashan was being choked and could hardly breathe, her face turning from pale to a deep red.
The girls screamed, and the boys rushed over to try and make Zhai Li let go, but they failed.
Yun Can’er was instinctively shielded by the boys, who were afraid she might get caught in the crossfire.
Luckily, the instructors arrived just in time and quickly subdued Zhai Li. Qi Xiashan lay on the ground, clutching her neck and gasping for air.
Lin Qingmei rushed over upon hearing the news and led Zhai Li and Qi Xiashan away with a grim expression.
When Ning Xiao came to pick up Yun Can’er that evening, Yun Can’er gave her a vivid description of the scene.
Ning Xiao asked, “Were you scared at the time?”
Yun Can’er thought back to how she felt. “I think I was just excited and forgot to be scared. Looking back now, it doesn’t seem that terrifying.”
Ning Xiao smiled at her and said, “My baby is getting braver. Keep it up.”
Yun Can’er asked in surprise, “Really? Am I really getting braver?”
Ning Xiao nodded. “When have I ever lied to you?”
Yun Can’er immediately retorted, “You lied to me about that thing with Zhuang Yuzhen.”
Ning Xiao was speechless, then said with a chuckle, “You really are getting braver, mentioning Zhuang Yuzhen right in front of me.” Previously, Yun Can’er would never have brought him up of her own accord.
Yun Can’er tilted her chin up proudly. “You’re mine now anyway, Zhuang Yuzhen can’t take you away.”
The next day, without Ning Xiao having to wake her, Yun Can’er got up early to wash and join her for exercise.
Ning Xiao was surprised. “You’ve had two weeks of military training, I wanted you to rest. Why are you so eager to exercise?”
Running side-by-side with Ning Xiao, with a strand of dark hair sticking to her sweaty cheek, Yun Can’er smiled brightly. “I want to spend more time with you. Exercising with you doesn’t feel tiring at all.”
Ning Xiao felt as though her heart had been brushed by a feather, and she turned to smile at Yun Can’er.
After breakfast, Ning Xiao took Yun Can’er to the office.
Seeing Yun Can’er again after two weeks, Yang Yuanqi expressed his warm welcome. Although he had never had a girlfriend, he could tell from the atmosphere between Ning Xiao and Yun Can’er that their relationship was better than ever.
Perhaps Yun Can’er would soon marry Ning Xiao and become the mistress of the Yun Group!
Naturally, Yang Yuanqi wasn’t going to miss the chance to get on the good side of the future boss’s wife. He had completely forgotten that the Yun Group belonged to the Yun family, not Ning Xiao.
Still, his luck was good, as the person he was flattering happened to be the true successor of the company.
When the two-day break ended, Yun Can’er returned to school and found that she had successfully transferred to her desired major, Business Administration.
The counselor for the Business Administration major took her to the Dean’s office for a test. “It’s not unheard of for students to switch majors between departments, but you have to pass a test first. Don’t be nervous, just do your best.”
Yun Can’er nodded.
When they arrived at the Dean’s office, only Wang Di was there.
Since being burned by Qi Xiashan, Wang Di had cut all ties with the Qi family. Qi Xiashan’s parents had called him privately many times, saying she was young and didn’t know any better, hoping he would let bygones be bygones. Wang Di had simply blocked both of them.
Claiming an adult is ‘still young’ was one of the most shameless things he had heard in a long time.
As Yun Can’er followed the counselor into the office, Wang Di thought her name looked familiar. He remembered that Qi Xiashan had caused all that trouble out of jealousy for this girl.
Feeling quite guilty toward Yun Can’er, Wang Di said kindly, “Don’t be nervous, the test questions are quite simple.”
He conveniently pulled out the easiest set from several tests and placed it in front of her.
“You have one hour. You may begin.”
Yun Can’er nodded, gave a polite thank you, and began the test. Her pen almost never stopped. While she was writing the answer to one question, her brain was already analyzing the next. In less than half an hour, the entire paper was finished.
Wang Di and the counselor were stunned.
However, it was too early to be truly surprised, they would only know if she actually knew the material or was just guessing once they checked the answers.
Wang Di pulled out the answer key. One question after another, all the way to the end. He looked up at Yun Can’er in amazement. “Student Yun Can’er, they’re all correct!”
The counselor took the paper in disbelief and checked it carefully himself. He looked up and said, “Every single one is right!”
It was nearly impossible to imagine an arts student answering a Business Administration paper with such perfection.
“Student Yun Can’er, aren’t you a Jewelry Appreciation major? How did you answer these economics and management questions so perfectly?” Wang Di asked curiously.
Yun Can’er replied shyly, “I go to my family’s company for an internship on weekends. Since I’ll be taking over the family business in the future, I usually read related books in my spare time.”
Interning at the family company…
Taking over the business in the future…
Suddenly, Wang Di had no more questions. “Congratulations, you’ve successfully transferred to the Business Administration major.”
The counselor gave Yun Can’er a copy of the class schedule and took her to pick up her textbooks.
There was a class during the second period of the morning for the Business Administration major. Three minutes before class started, the counselor took Yun Can’er to the classroom, where most of the students had already arrived.
The counselor signaled for everyone to be quiet and stood at the podium. “We have a new transfer student joining our major today. Everyone, please give her a warm welcome.”
Sparse applause broke out from the students.
The counselor nodded to Yun Can’er outside the door. When she walked in, her long, wavy hair was loose, making her look delicate. Her face was tiny, and her pale skin seemed to glow. The moment she entered, the entire classroom seemed to hit the pause button.
All the whispering stopped. People stared blankly at her. The angelically pure girl stepped onto the podium. “Hello everyone, I’m Yun Can’er. I’ll be a member of Class One of the Business Administration major from now on. Please take good care of me.” She gave a slight bow.
“Clap clap clap” Thunderous applause suddenly erupted from the students.
The campus belle! The campus belle had transferred into their class!
