- Chapter 28 - This Seat Likes You Very Much Now
“Get down,” that voice said, carried by the wind. Though she was no longer laughing, there was no trace of anger left either.
Yun Chuanzhi let go, her toes tapping the ground with a patter. She lowered her head and stole a glance at Bai Fenghe; the other woman was standing steady, though her layered collars had been tugged askew, revealing a small patch of smooth, porcelain-like skin.
“My apologies.” Yun Chuanzhi hurriedly stepped forward to tidy them for her.
“Who told you This Seat was going to kill someone?” Bai Fenghe glanced at her and sneered. “In your eyes, is This Seat some kind of mindless brute?”
It’s only because you kill people so often and so easily, Yun Chuanzhi thought. Still, knowing that Bai Fenghe didn’t intend to take Qi Yurong’s life, her heart finally settled. She turned to look at Qi Yurong.
Despite such a massive commotion, the women were still sleeping soundly, as if isolated within a dreamscape. Yun Chuanzhi reached out and pinched Qi Yurong’s nose, realizing aloud, “So the Sect Leader cast a spell on them to block out outside noise.”
Bai Fenghe hummed in affirmation, slowly weaving through the beds as if inspecting them. “This Seat only wished to teach these arrogant brats a lesson. I didn’t want to draw Senior Sister here again; better to avoid her finding more trouble with me.”
Yun Chuanzhi let go of Qi Yurong’s nose. Suddenly remembering something, she pulled out a charcoal pencil and began drawing on the woman’s charming face, smiling. “Why teach them a lesson?”
“Could it be;”
“It has nothing to do with you. It is simply that This Seat has always disliked dividing people into ranks. When Master was here, the sect never had such an atmosphere. Now, only a few decades have passed, and even such a noble sect spirit has vanished.”
Yun Chuanzhi offered an “oh” and was about to lower her head when she heard Bai Fenghe speak again.
“However, bullying someone from This Seat’s gate without cause; even if it is just an immortal servant; is not permitted.” Bai Fenghe’s tone was bone-chillingly cold.
So she really is standing up for me, Yun Chuanzhi thought, her lips curling up as she finished the final stroke of a turtle.
“Are you finished drawing?” Bai Fenghe asked suddenly.
So she had stayed still all this time just waiting for the drawing to be done. Yun Chuanzhi hurriedly pocketed her pencil and stood to the side, stealing a look at Bai Fenghe’s profile. She hadn’t expected this person to be quite human at times.
Once Yun Chuanzhi retreated, Bai Fenghe gave her sleeve a gentle flick. Qi Yurong, who had been in the land of dreams, began to writhe as if caught in a nightmare. She took a sharp breath and suddenly bolted upright.
She was drenched in sweat from whatever she had seen. When her eyes fell upon Bai Fenghe, she clutched her ears and let out a piercing scream.
So noisy. Yun Chuanzhi covered her ears. Bai Fenghe, however, remained unfazed. She looked down at the woman through her long lashes, her lips finally curling into a soft smile. “Screamed enough?”
When Bai Fenghe smiled, it was actually more terrifying than when she didn’t. The woman stopped her noise instantly, covering her mouth with both hands, trembling like a leaf.
“Sect; Sect Leader Bai.” Qi Yurong’s eyes scanned Yun Chuanzhi in a panic, her body nearly shrinking into the wall. “I; I;”
“Don’t be afraid. This Seat doesn’t eat people. I came to find you this time because I want you to apologize to my little immortal servant.” Bai Fenghe turned slightly and pointed at Yun Chuanzhi.
Qi Yurong was already a mess of tears. She was clearly so scared she had lost all composure; her eyes kept darting back to Bai Fenghe as she shifted into a kneeling position, stammering, “S; sorry.”
“It’s fine.” Yun Chuanzhi nodded to her. “I’m just a little immortal servant; no need for such a grand gesture.”
“I’m just; my legs are weak,” Qi Yurong sobbed, wiping away tears.
Yun Chuanzhi was somewhat speechless. She looked at Bai Fenghe and saw the corner of her lips lift for a moment; she was clearly laughing again.
This woman really enjoys watching me look awkward, Yun Chuanzhi complained internally, before speaking: “Sect Leader, since she has acknowledged her mistake, let’s head back early. It will be dawn soon.”
She was exhausted; she wanted to sleep.
“Mhm.” Bai Fenghe nodded. She didn’t look at the prostrate Qi Yurong again, but instead beckoned Yun Chuanzhi to come closer.
Unsure of her intent, Yun Chuanzhi cautiously walked to stand before Bai Fenghe. She saw the other woman raise a forefinger and press it to her brow. A burning sensation like fire immediately covered her forehead; Yun Chuanzhi instinctively tried to retreat, but a palm supported the back of her head, fixing her in place.
“Endure it; it will be over quickly,” Bai Fenghe said, applying a bit of pressure with her fingertip. Yun Chuanzhi gritted her teeth against the pain, her hand reflexively reaching out to grip the fabric at Bai Fenghe’s waist.
A warm sensation seeped through the clothing. Bai Fenghe did not dodge. Only when the heat on Yun Chuanzhi’s forehead turned to a cool chill did she release her hold.
She then slapped the back of Yun Chuanzhi’s hand. “Don’t touch This Seat.”
Yun Chuanzhi snapped her hand back, her tear-filled eyes half-squinting as she opened them. She rubbed her forehead frantically, her voice nervous: “Did you suck out my soul?”
“Nonsense,” Bai Fenghe scolded. “What use would This Seat have for your soul?”
“I simply removed the brand from your brow. What slave status rubbish; I don’t know which bastard came up with such a cruel way to torment people.”
“I’m no longer of slave status?” Yun Chuanzhi was both shocked and delighted. Although she didn’t care much about status, she had suffered quite a few restrictions from that single mark since coming to the Qianyuan Realm. This was a welcome relief.
Hugging a thigh really works. As long as someone was backing her up, life would be easier. Bai Fenghe was an exceptionally thick and sturdy “thigh” to hold onto. Yun Chuanzhi’s mindset shifted rapidly, and she immediately began planning her future strategy.
She would do small things to make Bai Fenghe happy; not only would she get good food and drink, but she’d also have her protection. With cultivation like Bai Fenghe’s; top-tier in the entire Qianyuan Realm; who would dare bully her in the future?
“Thank you, Sect Leader,” Yun Chuanzhi thanked her “obediently,” her waist bending into a deep bow.
Bai Fenghe glanced at her, seemingly too lazy to respond. She turned and walked out the door. The sky above the peach forest was already showing a faint glimmer of light; the wind was still, and the world was about to wake up.
“Aren’t you following? Do you want to sleep in a peach tree?” Bai Fenghe’s voice drifted back from afar. Yun Chuanzhi hurried out the door, lifting her skirt to chase after her. Behind them in the room, the others slowly woke up, and Qi Yurong began to wail.
The fragmented sounds of cultivators comforting the woman mingled with the chirping of birds in the morning light, signaling the break of day.
Yun Chuanzhi collapsed into sleep the moment she returned to the bedchamber. Even the piercing sunlight peeking through the window cracks couldn’t wake her, and no one came to call her. Thus, she didn’t wake up until mid-afternoon.
Even with her eyes open, her soul hadn’t quite returned from the land of dreams. She lay limply on the lounge, her eyes vacant.
“Ergou!” A boisterous shout crashed directly into Yun Chuanzhi’s ears from the palace entrance. Yun Chuanzhi bolted upright with a start, and then a streak of purple light shot out from behind the screen. The noise at the entrance ceased instantly.
“Tell that friend of yours to shut her mouth, or This Seat will tear out her tongue,” Bai Fenghe’s voice drifted eerily from the depths of the chamber.
“Yes, yes.” Yun Chuanzhi finally remembered that Bai Fenghe was resting in the same hall. She quickly lowered her head and scurried out the door.
She tiptoed outside and saw Cheng Jinshu standing under several maple trees, looking miserable with her mouth sealed shut by a celestial spell.
“Don’t you know the Sect Leader is also in the hall? Why the shouting? Aren’t you afraid she’ll tear your tongue out?” Yun Chuanzhi laughed, stepping down the stairs. She nodded to Ling Shui, who was standing beside Cheng Jinshu.
She asked, “Sister Ling Shui, you two weren’t hurt yesterday, were you?”
“No. I only tangled with those men in black for a moment before many other figures rushed out and subdued them.” Ling Shui’s apricot eyes crinkled as she looked Yun Chuanzhi over. “And you?”
“I was with the Sect Leader the whole time; I’m perfectly fine.”
“I was also rescued by a few people wearing dark iron armor. They left as soon as they put me in a safe place. They must have been Aunt’s people.” Cheng Jinshu was still shaken when speaking of yesterday. “I thought Aunt had been a lone soul for a long time; I didn’t expect her to have death warriors raised in secret.”
Bai Fenghe was cautious and meticulous, and always felt uneasy; raising death warriors was normal for her. Yun Chuanzhi nodded.
“The events of yesterday have already spread. Rumors on Mount Buxi always travel faster than the Sect Master’s official notices.” Ling Shui’s face was full of concern. “Everyone knows about Sect Leader Qiu’s plot to assassinate our Sect Leader. This kind of news cannot be suppressed.”
“What are the cultivators saying?” Yun Chuanzhi was curious.
“All sorts of things. Some think it’s terrifying that Sect Leader Qiu was secretly raising demons, while others think he was loyal and righteous, trying to rid the world of a pest. I heard so many arguments during breakfast my head started to ache,” Cheng Jinshu said, pressing her temples.
Ling Shui chimed in then: “By the way, did you know something else happened this morning?”
Yun Chuanzhi shook her head suspiciously.
Ling Shui glanced at the surroundings and leaned closer to Yun Chuanzhi, her gaze deep. “Sect Leader Qiu is dead.”
Yun Chuanzhi’s eyes widened instantly. Her mouth hung open as confusion flooded her mind. Yesterday, Qiu Hanshan had looked so indignant; how could he be dead now?
“How did he die?” she asked.
“Suicide,” Ling Shui said.
Suicide? Raising demons was a serious crime, but Bai Fenghe hadn’t actually been harmed. At most, he would have been expelled from the sect or had his immortal bones stripped; it shouldn’t have been enough to make him die.
Could it be that he hated Bai Fenghe so much that he chose suicide?
Ling Shui met her gaze and shook her head. “I also find it very fishy. The celestial prison is locked down now. All the Sect Leaders, the Sect Master, and even the Mountain-Guarding Elders who never leave seclusion have gone there. I wonder if they can find any clues.”
“Also, this year’s Core Sect Day has been canceled because of this.” Ling Shui lowered her lashes, her神情 dejected.
Ling Shui had finally gotten a chance to participate in sect affairs as a disciple, and now the opportunity was gone; naturally, she was downcast. Yun Chuanzhi understood her mood, but she couldn’t bring herself to be sad with her.
Mainly because she no longer had to go up and embarrass herself. Qiu Hanshan’s death was truly something to celebrate; heroic even.
But Ling Shui’s usually straight shoulders had slumped in sadness. Yun Chuanzhi exchanged a look with Cheng Jinshu, who also looked relieved, and they both insincerely leaned closer to Ling Shui, wrapping their arms around her neck.
One sighed: “Ling Shui, everything has two sides. This time you showed your loyalty and merit before my Aunt. Maybe when we go back, she’ll actually take you as a disciple.”
The other said softly: “Sister Ling Shui, don’t be sad. I’ll put in a good word for you before the Sect Leader some other day. She likes me very much now; maybe if she’s happy, she’ll grant your wish.”
Before Ling Shui could say anything, a refreshing, ethereal fragrance drifted in with the wind. Silent footsteps approached, and Bai Fenghe, dressed in a pale purple silk skirt with her long hair pinned up by several gold hairpins, walked past them with regal elegance.
She then took two steps back, glancing sideways at Yun Chuanzhi with a trace of a smile on her lips.
Yun Chuanzhi’s breath hitched, and she froze on the spot. Cheng Jinshu, being quicker to react, instantly backed away ten feet.
Bai Fenghe looked coolly at Yun Chuanzhi’s hand draped over Ling Shui’s neck. Then, she stepped forward gracefully, pinching Yun Chuanzhi’s collar and pulling her away with a stagger.
She smiled, enunciating every word: “This Seat; likes you very much now, is that so?”
