- Chapter 10 - I Didn't Sleep with the Sect Leader
A cool breeze swept across the windowsill, accompanied by the cries of wild geese flying north.
Yun Chuanzhi tugged at her collar, looking suspiciously at the abnormal flush on Ling Shui’s face. Belatedly, she asked, “Sister Ling Shui, are you feeling unwell? Why is your face so red?”
“No, you’re mistaken. It’s just the reflection of the flowers,” Ling Shui shook her head.
After a pause, she couldn’t help but whisper an instruction: “You are young and ignorant. The Sect Leader is, after all, a cultivator; when her strength rises, she might not be able to look after you. Therefore, in certain matters, you must protect yourself. Don’t let things go too far.”
As an immortal servant, Ling Shui shouldn’t have meddled in the Sect Leader’s affairs. However, she was a woman from a proper cultivation family; seeing an orphaned, naive girl like Cui Ergou encounter such a situation, she ultimately couldn’t bear it.
Yun Chuanzhi finally understood. She pulled her sleeve to cover her shoulder and couldn’t help but laugh.
“Sister Ling Shui, have you misunderstood something?” Yun Chuanzhi took a step forward, looking at her with clear, dark eyes. “I didn’t sleep with the Sect Leader last night.”
She said this as naturally as saying “I didn’t eat dinner last night.” This time, the flush on Ling Shui’s face spread all the way down to her neck.
“That… that’s good then.” Ling Shui coughed again, her hand gripping the corner of the table. She visibly breathed a sigh of relief.
“In that case, go have your meal. The Sect Leader will be practicing at the top of Wu Cliff this evening. As her personal servant, you must go and serve her.” Ling Shui’s voice regained its indifference, and she turned to leave.
Ling Shui isn’t as arrogant and cold as she appears on the surface. For now, she can be considered a good person, Yun Chuanzhi thought, watching her back.
Today’s meal consisted of two meat dishes, one vegetable dish, and a fresh tea snack. Yun Chuanzhi finished it all in mere moments and let out a satisfied burp.
Cui Ergou used to work too hard and never had enough to eat, which was why this body was so thin and frail. Now that Yun Chuanzhi had taken over, she intended to eat more and sleep more to nurse this young body back to health.
Yun Chuanzhi was skilled at fighting but terrible at grooming. She simply tied her hair into a ponytail and set off for her duties. Following the winding corridors, she made several turns until she arrived at Bai Fenghe’s door.
Another immortal servant was already standing outside, presumably her partner for the shift. Yun Chuanzhi tiptoed over and gave her a friendly smile.
The girl seemed a bit timid; she kept her eyes lowered, not daring to look at Yun Chuanzhi, and gave a slight nod.
Most servants in this sect were somewhat hostile toward her. Finding a shy one was rare, so after taking her place, Yun Chuanzhi couldn’t help but peek at her.
The girl looked about eighteen or nineteen, with gentle, quiet features. Her lips were the color of cinnabar mixed with water—a soft, unpretentious red. She looked like an inconspicuous apricot blossom hanging from a branch.
“Are you also the Sect Leader’s personal servant? Why is this the first time I’ve seen you?” Yun Chuanzhi asked in a low voice.
“I just arrived today.” The woman’s voice was even softer than hers, nearly dissipating in the wind. Yun Chuanzhi had to lean forward to hear her.
Seeing she was an introvert, Yun Chuanzhi softened her tone. “My surname is Cui. What is your name?”
“My surname is Pei. You can call me Xunqian.”
Just as Yun Chuanzhi was about to strike up more conversation, a roar of anger erupted from inside the room, followed by the sound of porcelain shattering. Something was thrown against the door, clattering into pieces on the floor.
Who was Bai Fenghe angry with now? Yun Chuanzhi peeked through the crack in the door but could only see flashes of swaying purple robes.
“Shh.” The servant opposite her put a finger to her lips and whispered, “The Sect Leader is angry with the Sect Master. Do not go in.”
The Sect Master? Bai Fenghe’s senior sister?
Seeing Yun Chuanzhi’s confusion, Xunqian moved closer and whispered with downcast eyes, “The ‘Core Sect Day’ of Mount Buxi is coming up. Every year on that day, all Peak Leaders and their disciples must go to the main peak for an evaluation. But news came from the main peak this morning saying the Sect Leader is not allowed to attend. She feels it’s unfair and is furious about it.”
“Why isn’t she allowed to go?” Yun Chuanzhi asked.
Xunqian glanced around cautiously, shrinking back. “Firstly, because the Sect Leader has always been at odds with the Sect Master and the other peaks. Secondly, because the Core Sect Day is meant to test cultivation results and select the best. Our Gundan Peak has no disciples at all; going would just be for show.”
So that was it. Yun Chuanzhi had heard that these cultivation sects recruited talent every year or held competitions to strengthen their power and compete for the top spot.
As Yun Chuanzhi was thinking, the door beside her was suddenly pushed open. A strong gust of wind swept out, and Xunqian quickly pulled her down to kneel.
Bai Fenghe strode out of the room, her cool hem brushing against Yun Chuanzhi’s bowed cheek before she came to a halt.
“You, come with me,” she said to Xunqian. Then she looked coldly at Yun Chuanzhi. “You.”
“Clean the palace interior thoroughly. If I return and find it still in such a mess, I’ll use your head to wipe the floor.”
She led Xunqian away, their silhouettes disappearing at the end of the corridor. Yun Chuanzhi raised her head and looked into the room, her eyebrows knitting together.
The once orderly sleeping palace looked as if it had been struck by lightning. The beauty couch was snapped in two, with one half in the east corner and the other wedged into the west window. The stone table had been completely reduced to ash, which the wind was now blowing everywhere.
Not to mention the floor full of vase shards, crumpled papers, and spilled water. Yun Chuanzhi let out a long, resigned sigh and trudged inside.
She had zero interest in fulfilling Cui Ergou’s dying wish, nor did she care about Mount Buxi or Bai Fenghe. Her only concern was sleeping more, eating well, and quietly being a “salted fish” lying flat.
But now, opening her spiritual root seemed urgent. If she had to do this much work every day, she’d die of exhaustion in this palace even if Bai Fenghe didn’t kill her.
Yun Chuanzhi grumbled while cleaning. By the time she had painstakingly cleared away all the trash, the sun was already slanting toward the west.
She collapsed onto the freshly cleaned floor. Above her was the same landscape painting as yesterday—perhaps even more beautiful and brilliant—but in Yun Chuanzhi’s eyes, it was becoming somewhat loathsome.
When life is hard, one is in no mood to appreciate beautiful scenery.
Fortunately, most of the hall was clean; only the corner behind the screen still had some dust. Yun Chuanzhi mustered her energy, jumped up, and crawled in with a rag.
As she wiped, the sound of approaching footsteps grew louder. Yun Chuanzhi didn’t pay much attention until the door was burst open by a surge of air. She realized Bai Fenghe was back.
Someone else was with her. The moment that person stepped over the threshold, the air in the room felt as if it had been washed by a wind from the snowy plains. The original stale air was replaced by a crisp, cold scent.
“Bai Fenghe, how much longer are you going to be this willful?”
The person spoke, her voice like her aura—sounding as if it had traveled from a glacier across thousands of years.
“Willful?” Bai Fenghe’s laughter rang out. Through the hollow patterns of the screen, Yun Chuanzhi saw her twirl her skirt like a flickering purple peony before sinking softly into a chair.
“Senior Sister, haven’t you known of my wickedness for a long time? Since you’ve hated me for over a hundred years, why bother putting on such a pained expression?” Bai Fenghe smiled beautifully, but her tone was full of provocation. “Acting so hypocritical… it truly makes me sick.”
Senior Sister? Is this the legendary current Sect Master of Mount Buxi, Bai Xiaochen?
Oh no, I’m hearing secrets.
Usually, for someone like her overheard a master’s conversation, the outcome was being beaten to death. Yun Chuanzhi gripped her handkerchief in distress.
Should she go out or keep hiding?
Then again, both of these women were top-tier experts in the cultivation world. Why had neither of them noticed she was still here!
“Bai Fenghe!” Bai Xiaochen said her name heavily, clearly enraged. “I believed you were wronged regarding the events of that year and I haven’t blamed you since. But why have you become like this!”
“How can you face our Master’s teachings!”
Bai Fenghe sneered. “You haven’t blamed me? You’ve blamed me plenty. During that night of torture years ago, when I was in agony, did you ever come to visit me even once?”
“You just think I killed Master. Stop being so fake.”
Bai Fenghe seemed intent on provoking Bai Xiaochen, her smile growing more radiant. “Senior Sister is right; I am no longer the Bai Fenghe of the past. Now, I must kill someone every day to feel satisfied. Furthermore, I stopped cultivating long ago. I have hundreds of beauties kept in my peak for daily pleasure.”
Before she could finish, the tip of Bai Xiaochen’s sword thrust toward her. Bai Fenghe didn’t block it; she met it head-on. The cold light grazed her cheek, instantly slicing a crimson gash into her delicate skin.
The dim glow of the setting sun fell on her hair. It was a warm, golden color, yet it carried an indescribable bitterness.
Bai Xiaochen’s strike carried spiritual power. The resulting wind knocked over the screen in the corner, and Yun Chuanzhi, clutching her handkerchief, was suddenly exposed to both of them.
…Seeing Bai Fenghe get hit meant she was definitely going to be silenced today.
“Sect Master, have you eaten yet?” Yun Chuanzhi hesitated for a long time before finally blurting out a greeting.
Then she twitched the corners of her mouth, her smile looking even more miserable than Bai Fenghe’s.
