Chapter 5: Like Being Abandoned Eight Hundred Times
Zhong Shengwan and Jin Yundong went out to sea, playing on the water for several days before returning. As soon as he stepped through the door, he saw his old man waving at him with a face full of spring breezes.
He sat down: “Dad, why didn’t you go out today?”
Since the eldest brother had become capable of supporting the group, his father didn’t go out every day to wander around or meet up with a bunch of idle old friends for fishing, tea, and the like.
Father Zhong: “Isn’t it all for you, you little monkey!”
Saying so, he told Zhong Shengwan about the engagement.
These past two days he had been tossing and turning, forcing himself to see Chu Jinchen in a favorable light. Chu Jinchen was the future head of the Chu family. In terms of talent and appearance, he was the cream of the crop and a worthy match for their Zhongzhong.
As for not being particularly devoted to Zhongzhong—hearts are made of flesh. Zhongzhong was such a good child; if he and Yanling showed more care toward Chu Jinchen in the future, things would surely turn around.
Zhong Shengwan: …That’s really not necessary.
Father Zhong: “Then do you still want to enter the entertainment industry to be an actor?”
Zhong Shengwan’s eyes lit up: “Of course!”
Father Zhong understood, the child was just feeling shy.
Since it was a done deal, he simply said: “Your Grandpa Chu and I have already settled it. There’s a very auspicious day three months from now. As for getting married, wait until you’re a bit older. Besides, your Grandpa Chu…”
He told Zhong Shengwan about Old Master Chu being ill, his expression quite sentimental. He also warned Zhong Shengwan that Old Master Chu couldn’t handle any shocks. Even if Zhong Shengwan was throwing a tantrum at Chu Jinchen or something similar, he mustn’t take the trouble over there, lest the elderly man be denied his peace.
When Zhong Shengwan tried to explain further, Father Zhong only took it as childish talk. It wasn’t like he hadn’t said harsh words before, only to feel a few days later that Chu Jinchen was a peerless treasure.
Zhong Shengwan: “…”
He certainly remembered there was an engagement in the book, but that was because the original Zhong Shengwan had begged Father Zhong to go to the Chu family to propose. Because of Jiang Yu’s appearance, he felt a sense of crisis and wanted to fence Chu Jinchen into his territory early on.
Zhong Shengwan originally thought that if he didn’t mention the engagement and gradually grew distant from Chu Jinchen, this matter would vanish into thin air. He didn’t expect that through a strange combination of circumstances, this plot point would arrive anyway.
In the original work, halfway through the engagement banquet, Jiang Yu tracked them down, weeping piteously on the side.
Chu Jinchen was heartbroken seeing this and suddenly realized his true feelings. He found a chance to drag Jiang Yu into an empty room.
The two confessed their hearts to each other.
Chu Jinchen promised Jiang Yu that the engagement banquet was only for the Zhong family and his grandfather to see; he would find an opportunity to call it off later. The one he loved was Jiang Yu.
Having gone through great lows and highs, Jiang Yu kissed Chu Jinchen excitedly.
Their deep, passionate kiss was caught red-handed by the original Zhong Shengwan who had followed them. He made a huge scene at the banquet, and in the chaos, Old Master Chu was triggered, fell seriously ill, was hospitalized, and soon passed away.
From then on, Chu Jinchen hated Zhong Shengwan to the bone. Furthermore, he targeted the Zhong family because of it until the family went bankrupt and Zhong Shengwan committed suicide. Only then did the plot involving the Zhong family completely conclude.
The book never once mentioned from beginning to end that Old Master Chu suffered from brain cancer.
Zhong Shengwan thought that looking at it now, Chu Jinchen in the original work had clearly transformed his own guilt into hatred for Zhong Shengwan.
Poor Zhong Shengwan was guilt-ridden until death, thinking he was too impulsive and had harmed the Old Master who had doted on him.
Zhong Shengwan certainly didn’t want to get engaged or married to Chu Jinchen, but he also didn’t want to carry the heavy blame for Old Master Chu’s death.
On second thought, Chu Jinchen must be even more anxious than him, so he calmed down again.
Two days later, Chu Jinchen asked to meet Zhong Shengwan.
He didn’t know what kind of soul-bewitching soup Zhong Shengwan had fed his grandfather, but one thing was certain: he didn’t like Zhong Shengwan and wanted the other to retreat in the face of difficulties.
Grandpa could demand things of him, but toward Zhong Shengwan, he surely couldn’t resort to a hunger strike or the like.
The two made an appointment for noon.
Zhong Shengwan arrived on time. After waiting for ten minutes and seeing that Chu Jinchen hadn’t arrived, he asked for the menu and ordered food. It was all stuff he liked to eat, and he planned to leave as soon as he finished.
The one failing to be punctual wasn’t him; his conscience was clear.
Chu Jinchen was an hour late. There was a problem with a major project, and an emergency meeting was called.
If it were an appointment with anyone else, he would have notified them long ago that he would be delayed. But thinking that the person on the other end was Zhong Shengwan, he had absolutely no interest in doing so.
Call it contempt or call it disgust; in any case, if he waits, he waits.
Moreover, Chu Jinchen had a faint feeling in his heart—a kind of certainty that comes from being liked. He was certain that Zhong Shengwan would definitely wait for him. This certainty allowed the helplessness he felt after being forced by his grandfather to be replaced by a sense of gratification.
The more Zhong Shengwan made a fuss, the more he wanted to prevent him from getting his way.
After Chu Jinchen arrived at the agreed-upon restaurant, he didn’t see Zhong Shengwan.
Did he go to the restroom?
While unbuttoning his suit, he asked the waiter which table Zhong Shengwan had been sitting at, and ordered a drink while he was at it.
The people who came to this restaurant were all celebrities and socialites. Zhong Shengwan’s face was unforgettable, and Chu Jinchen was also a very dazzling presence in a crowd. The waiter was not unfamiliar with either of them.
After thinking for a moment, the waiter replied: “Young Master Zhong has already left.”
Chu Jinchen’s hand pressing on his suit button froze: “…Left?”
How was that possible?!
This kind of VIP guest was always a focus of the restaurant’s attention. The waiter answered in detail: “Young Master Zhong arrived at twelve o’clock, ordered a meal, and left after eating. He has been gone for nearly half an hour.”
Chu Jinchen thought that Zhong Shengwan must have left because of something urgent. But remembering that meeting at the hospital not long ago, he asked as if possessed: “How was his appetite?”
Waiter: “He looked like he had a very good appetite.”
In his heart, however, the waiter thought: Rumor has it that Young Master Zhong’s love for CEO Chu is unswerving, while CEO Chu is lukewarm toward him. Looking at it now, why does it seem the other way around?
At any rate, it wasn’t like the rumors.
The two of them looked like they were on a date.
CEO Chu seemed to be late, but when Young Master Zhong finished his meal and left, he looked to be in a very good mood. He even said the mushroom soup was well-made. He seemed… he seemed entirely unaffected by CEO Chu’s failure to show up?
On the contrary, it was CEO Chu whose face looked terrible right now, like he had been abandoned eight hundred times.
Zhong Shengwan, whose mood hadn’t been affected, soon received a call from Chu Jinchen. A cold and frustrated voice asked: “Why did you leave without saying hello to me?”
