Chapter 4: The Marriage Is Set in Stone
Jiang Yu had not lied.
Previously, after being fired from the restaurant, he had told Chu Jinchen about it. His original intention was to let Chu Jinchen see Zhong Shengwan’s true face, but he hadn’t expected it to be a blessing in disguise.
Chu Jinchen mentioned he was lacking a life assistant, offering excellent benefits and even a room in the Chu residence.
With that, he even saved on rent.
Because Chu Jinchen was so kind, Jiang Yu felt more and more that Zhong Shengwan was unworthy of him. Especially since Chu Jinchen had chronic gastritis—he could cook for Chu Jinchen, but what about Zhong Shengwan?
Would he order takeout or hire someone?
Takeout was oily and unhealthy; as for hiring someone, could they truly care for him with all their heart?
As someone who had read the entire novel, Zhong Shengwan wasn’t surprised that Jiang Yu and Chu Jinchen were living together; it was all written in the book.
He raised an eyebrow: “Then you’re quite impressive.”
Jiang Yu: “What… what do you mean?”
Zhong Shengwan: “Nothing, I’m praising you.” Jumping into a fire pit so proactively—you’re really giving it your all.
Was falling in love with an overbearing CEO in a melodramatic novel really that easy? The whole book was just over a hundred chapters, and more than ninety of them involved suffering, hardship, and petty jealousy. The final Grand Reunion felt like a joke.
In any case, if this kind of fortune were offered to him, he wouldn’t want it.
Besides, Chu Jinchen was suspicious and Jiang Yu loved overthinking, the two weren’t a good match. Thinking it over, filming was much more appealing.
Zhong Shengwan didn’t want to waste time on Jiang Yu. He said leisurely: “I don’t know what excuse you used to run out and find me, but your Brother Chu is still sick. Are you sure you want to waste time here?”
Jiang Yu hesitated, unwilling to give up, suspicious and defensive: “You…”
Why wasn’t he angry? Why wasn’t he making a scene? Was he plotting some sinister move? People from wealthy families had truly wicked minds.
Zhong Shengwan: “It’s no fun liking someone with bad eyesight. I’ll let you have him.”
In his view, although the original “Zhong Shengwan” was a bit impulsive, he was innocent and sincere—someone very worthy of being liked.
Jiang Yu returned upstairs in a daze. Seeing Chu Jinchen with his eyes open: “Brother Chu, you’re awake?”
Chu Jinchen gave a concise “Mm.”
“Where did you go?”
Jiang Yu: “Drinking cold water isn’t good. I went to the car to get your thermos.”
He was a very meticulous person. In the few days he had lived at the Chu residence, he had already mastered many of Chu Jinchen’s habits. For instance, Chu Jinchen had a slight obsession with cleanliness; mineral water was fine, but if it was hot water from a hospital dispenser, he insisted on using his private cup.
Chu Jinchen: “Where is the cup?”
Jiang Yu: “I forgot to take the keys… the car keys… I couldn’t open the car door.”
Chu Jinchen didn’t expose Jiang Yu.
Even though he had been asleep, his rest was restless. He knew about Zhong Shengwan getting the medicine and the questions he asked the doctor, as well as Jiang Yu slipping out shortly after Zhong Shengwan left.
Fearing that Jiang Yu would suffer at the hands of the sharp-tongued Zhong Shengwan, he had planned to call if Jiang Yu didn’t return soon.
Perhaps due to the physical exhaustion caused by the illness, he recalled the sound of Zhong Shengwan asking the doctor questions after receiving the medicine. It was a very gentle, calm voice, asking thorough questions—clearly showing deep concern for the sick person.
And that person, quite obviously, was not him.
So Zhong Shengwan hadn’t lied, he had misunderstood him…
A faint sense of regret bubbled up in his heart. He had been too arbitrary before, he thought. Then he reconsidered—Jiang Yu had likely followed him to argue with Zhong Shengwan.
Looking at it this way, Jiang Yu wasn’t as weak and easily bullied as he had thought.
Jiang Yu had no idea that his image in Chu Jinchen’s heart had already begun to shift.
He worked hard to analyze the conversation with Zhong Shengwan, including the other’s expressions and the pauses in his speech, trying to determine if Zhong Shengwan had truly given up or if it was just a feint.
When Zhong Shengwan arrived home, he acted like a thief, hiding the bags of Chinese medicine in the small refrigerator in his elder brother Zhong Yanling’s bedroom.
In the evening, he even went to the kitchen.
To avoid scaring his father and brother out of their wits, he let the cooking auntie “guide” him through a few home-style dishes. The scrambled eggs with green onions were slightly burnt, the garlic lettuce had a bit too much sauce, and the radish and pork rib soup was a bit bland.
In short, it was edible. The presentation wasn’t great, but the taste wasn’t too bad.
He also instructed the auntie to make a few stomach-nourishing dishes.
During dinner, Father Zhong and Zhong Yanling were still shocked.
Whenever Zhong Yanling reached for the eggs or the lettuce, Father Zhong would stare at him like a protective old foodie, yet he was so happy his face was glowing. “You little monkey, did you do something bad again?”
Zhong Shengwan said he hadn’t.
Father Zhong didn’t ask further. The only time he got irritable was when Zhong Yanling scooped a second bowl of rib soup.
After dinner, Father Zhong and his eldest son went to the study.
Zhong Yanling: “I checked. There’s money in his card, his new sports car isn’t scratched, and there’s nothing unusual—except for running into Chu Jinchen at the Jin family birthday party the day before yesterday.”
Father and son looked at each other, both seeing the helplessness in each other’s eyes.
Zhong Yanling: “Lately he hasn’t been spending money, he isn’t going to the clubs, and he’s always following entertainment news. Dad, it looks like Zhongzhong hasn’t given up yet.”
Just because Chu Jinchen had a meal with an artist for a product endorsement—which even sparked rumors—Zhongzhong was ready to drop out of the Finance department at a top university he had worked so hard to get into.
Zhong Yanling really wanted to grab him and give him a beating.
But this was the brother he had watched grow up. His features still bore a resemblance to their late mother. Whenever the boy called him “Ge” in that close way, he was completely out of options.
Father Zhong sighed too: “I’ll think of a way.”
The younger son had liked clinging to the eldest Chu son since he was a child, there was no way to break it. It would be better to fulfill his wish rather than let him waste his studies and spend his life with only a high school diploma.
After all, if they couldn’t make it work, they could get a divorce. Hearts are made of flesh; if the eldest Chu son didn’t realize Zhongzhong’s worth and Zhongzhong ended up heartbroken and let go, it would be too late for regrets then!
A few days later, Father Zhong invited the old Master of the Chu family for tea.
In terms of age, Father Zhong was a junior, but he had supported the massive Zhong family single-handedly in his youth. His status was equal to that of Old Master Chu, and they treated each other as peers.
After some idle chat about how the eldest Chu son was a leader among men, and that since he was of age, he should marry to support the family business, and so on.
Understanding the underlying meaning, Old Master Chu was the first to bring up the engagement of the two juniors.
He truly had a high opinion of Zhong Shengwan.
One reason was that among the juniors, Zhong Shengwan had a simple personality and no bad habits; he was also extremely devoted to his grandson. His grandson was cold-natured—if he found another cold-natured partner, what kind of life would that be?
Furthermore, Zhong Shengwan’s family background was impeccable. Both Father Zhong and the eldest Zhong son were capable, upright people. Since they both doted on Zhong Shengwan, they would surely support and protect his grandson out of love for the boy.
In this generation of the Chu family, only Jinchen was successful. Everyone else, including Chu Jinchen’s parents, were parasites. Without support, a single tree cannot make a forest.
Old Master Chu also knew that Chu Jinchen wasn’t fond of Zhong Shengwan and feared there might be changes to this marriage.
He let out a long sigh and said to Father Zhong: “I won’t hide it from you. Whether these old bones of mine will make it through the year is still unknown. My only wish now is for the children to be well. If I can see Jinchen and Xiaowan settle down and start a family, I can close my eyes in peace.”
He had been diagnosed with a brain tumor a few months ago. It was terminal.
Even if a dragon dies, its prestige remains—moreover, Old Master Chu still held the title of Chairman. He had forced the news to be kept secret, even Chu Jinchen didn’t know.
Even if Father Zhong hadn’t come, he would have gone to their door to propose.
And so, this marriage was set in stone.
