Chapter 16: What Favor or No Favor? Isn’t This Just the Couple’s Little Flirtation!
Gu Yan: “I think what you said makes a lot of sense, but your sister and I were not brought together by mutual love. If she has someone else she likes in the future, is it truly good for her if we keep her tied down like this?”
“I don’t care!” Gu Rou raised her head, her eyes filled with a serious, unreasonable persistence: “Anyway, as long as my sister still likes you, you have to stay loyal to her; you are not allowed to fail her. If one day my sister really stops liking you and falls for someone else, it must be because you didn’t work hard enough. If you don’t even know how to please such a good girl like my sister and can’t keep her affection, then I won’t acknowledge you as my brother anymore.”
Listening to her absurd speech, Gu Yan actually felt a ridiculous sense of being convinced!
Though he was destitute at the moment, it wouldn’t be like this forever.
Lin Ning treated him with such sincerity; he doubted there would be another girl like her in this world.
If there ever came a day when he was exonerated and returned to a high position, and Lin Ning still loved him, he would never fail her.
As for now…
It was better to first figure out how to overcome the immediate hardships!
“What are you two whispering about so secretly?”
Mother Gu walked over at this moment, seeing the two siblings sharing secrets and teasing them curiously.
Gu Yan didn’t answer, his eyes darting toward Gu Rou.
Gu Rou stood up. “Brother was just asking me about some daily matters. It’s nothing, just chatting.”
Mother Gu looked at Gu Rou, then at Gu Yan.
Finally, she brought up why she had come over: “Tomorrow Rourou and Ningning are going to start work, and your father and I also have to go out to labor. Xiao Yan, you’ll be in the cowshed by yourself. You’ll be fine taking care of yourself, right?”
Gu Yan gave an “En”: “Mom, you and Dad rest easy, I can manage.”
Mother Gu nodded upon hearing his words, then turned to Gu Rou: “I don’t know what you’ll be assigned to do tomorrow, but Rourou, you must remember: work a bit harder, help shoulder the burden for your sister-in-law, don’t let her get too tired, and definitely don’t hold her back, do you understand?”
Gu Rou also nodded: “I know, Mom. Don’t worry, Sister and I will take care of each other. I’ll also keep an eye on Sister for my brother, and I won’t let other male youths act all attentive!”
Hearing the first half of Gu Rou’s sentence, Mother Gu felt somewhat comforted, but as soon as she heard the end, alarm bells instantly rang in her head!
“What other male youths?” She immediately seized upon the main point.
Gu Rou opened her mouth to speak, but Gu Yan intercepted her from the side: “What she means is she won’t give male youths the chance to act attentive to them. After all, they are at a blooming age, and some male youths might develop certain ideas. There are also other young men in the village; they need to have a sense of propriety in their words and actions. If the work is too tiring, do less, work slower, and once I’ve recovered enough, I’ll sneak out to help you.”
As Gu Yan spoke, he realized this was indeed a major matter that required attention. He couldn’t help but give Gu Rou a few more instructions!
Gu Rou nodded repeatedly while Mother Gu, standing nearby, seemed even more worried!
She had just realized a problem: her daughter-in-law and son were already divorced. The daughter-in-law was currently single. If someone really took a fancy to her and acted attentive every day, what if she was moved?
The more she thought about it, the worse it felt. She turned to Gu Yan and asked: “How much longer until your injuries are healed?”
At this moment, Lin Ning, who had finished chatting with Father Gu, happened to walk over. Hearing Mother Gu’s question, she answered: “Gu Yan’s injuries need to be nurtured slowly. It will take at least two or three months.”
As she spoke, her gaze fell upon Gu Yan: “The wounds on your body, and your limbs—have you felt any changes in sensation?”
Stared at by her direct gaze, Gu Yan’s eyes lowered slightly for a moment before quickly looking back up, as if he had just blinked.
“No,” he answered with two words, as blunt as if he had no injuries at all.
Lin Ning was silent for a moment, then took a step forward: “I’ll check the wounds.”
She felt a bit of distrust toward him.
Mother Gu and Gu Rou both stepped aside, leaving space for them.
Lin Ning’s eyes fell on the loosely tied strips of cloth, sighing inwardly at how perfunctory the village doctor was.
She unwrapped his bandages and saw messy traces of medicinal liquid, along with red, swollen, and everted wounds.
Lin Ning frowned. “The wounds have become like this, and you can’t feel the pain?”
Hearing her words, Mother Gu immediately asked nervously: “What’s wrong? Are the wounds inflamed? The village doctor just came to check on him this afternoon.”
Lin Ning sighed. “This is the masterpiece of the village doctor. I don’t know if his medical skills are poor or if it was intentional. I’ll treat them again for you.”
As she spoke, she began cleaning the medicinal liquid from the wounds, then asked: “Did he move the wooden boards on your legs?”
“No,” Gu Yan answered, “but he moved the ones on my arms.”
Lin Ning gave an “En” and glanced at the boards on his arms. “I’ll re-tie those for you in a moment too.”
Gu Yan looked at her: “Thank you.”
Lin Ning gave another “En” and struck while the iron was hot: “Since you want to thank me, don’t just say it with words. Remember it, and use a practical thanks in the future.”
Gu Yan was stunned by her words. He had thought she would say “you’re welcome” or “we’re family.”
After a pause, he spoke: “You have a point. So, how would you like me to thank you in the future?”
“Since it’s a matter for the future, we’ll talk about it then. For now, you just need to remember that you, Gu Yan, owe me a favor.” Having finished treating the wounds on his body, she began to remove the wooden boards from his arms.
As she spoke, her hand movements were very nimble and didn’t delay for a second.
Regarding her request for a favor, Mother Gu didn’t think it was bad at all; instead, she thought it was wonderful!
What favor or no favor? Isn’t this just the couple’s little flirtation!
As for Gu Rou, she didn’t quite understand the term “flirtation” yet, but she felt her brother owed Lin Ning far more than just one favor.
It was many, many large favors!
The entire Gu family owed her; it couldn’t be repaid in this lifetime, and it would be a struggle to pay back in the next.
So, she looked at Lin Ning: “Sister, why don’t we go back and get a little notebook to record it, so my brother doesn’t go back on his word in the future?”
Both Mother Gu and Gu Yan looked at her. Given her bizarre ideas, it wasn’t surprising that she was the one suggesting it!
Lin Ning also looked at her. “Recording it in a little notebook and ideally having your brother sign and thumbprint it—what do you think?”
Gu Rou grew even more excited, even clapping her hands regardless of the setting: “That’s a great idea! Then have Mom and Dad sign and thumbprint too, so my brother can’t wiggle out of it later even if he wanted to.”
Lin Ning just looked at her. “Yes, and if someone finds that little notebook, they can round us all up in one go. There’d be no wiggling out of it then!”
