Chapter 15: Gu Yan’s Focus: She Said I Was Dead?
Now, everyone’s eyes on him held a deeper, more meaningful look.
Even Lin Ning hadn’t expected this, and she cast another glance at him: “Killed in action.”
The guy: “…!”
The others: “…!”
Gu Rou: “…!”
Everyone looked at Lin Ning, their mouths hanging open, unable to utter another word.
Lin Ning moved her chopsticks and looked at the male youth: “Any other questions?”
He shook his head, his expression a bit strange: “No more!”
Lin Ning gave an “En.” “Let’s eat!”
Finally, they could eat a proper meal, and the conversation at the table became much lighter and more pleasant.
Only Ye Shiyu secretly placed a piece of meat in Lin Ning’s bowl and whispered: “Your partner isn’t actually dead, right?”
Lin Ning paused and turned to look at her. Before she could speak, she heard her say: “Don’t find it strange; I just feel that you shouldn’t easily pronounce someone dead, especially someone who is in danger at any moment.”
Hearing this, Lin Ning’s eyes filled with shock, and the words escaped her: “Do you know something?”
Ye Shiyu shook her head: “I don’t know anything, it’s just that the feeling you give me is very strange. I just don’t want you to say someone is dead so easily!”
Lin Ning watched her in silence, her mind churning with a whirlwind of thoughts.
What did she mean by that? Was she saying that whoever she said died would actually die?
What nonsense!
She didn’t take it to heart, finished her meal quietly, and didn’t stay long, taking Gu Rou back with her.
Later that night, they still had to deliver food to the cowshed. Tomorrow the educated youths would start working, and Father and Mother Gu would likely have tasks as well, so she thought she could leave some dry rations for them to cook themselves.
“Sister, should we make flatbreads to take over?” Gu Rou asked while scrubbing the pot, considering what to make for those in the cowshed.
After thinking for a moment, Lin Ning said, “No flatbreads. Just boil a pot of water and cook some eggs. We ate at the station today; let’s be cautious and not cook at home. When we go later, bring one of those cans of meat to give your brother some nutrients.”
Gu Rou thought Lin Ning’s words made a lot of sense and had no objections to the arrangement.
Especially seeing how much she cared for her brother, Gu Rou was even happier.
After her sister-in-law became her “sister,” she would eventually be her brother’s wife again!
In the deep quiet of the night, Lin Ning and Gu Rou arrived at the cowshed once more.
Gu Rou, not failing expectations, went up to Gu Yan and took out the eggs and the canned meat: “Brother, look at the good things we brought you!”
Sure enough, when Gu Yan saw the canned meat, his usually unmoved eyes flashed with doubt: “This is army-spec canned meat. Where did it come from?”
Gu Rou told him excitedly: “It’s from a new youth in our village. I bought it from her. We bought two cans; we kept one for ourselves, and Sister said to bring this one to you so you can recover.”
Hearing her words, Gu Yan turned his head toward Lin Ning, only to see her talking with his father.
Beside him, Gu Rou continued: “Brother, let me tell you, Sister really cares about you. It’s just that Comrade Ye didn’t have many cans left, otherwise we definitely would have bought more. But Comrade Ye promised us that next time her uncle mails her some, she’ll sell them to us again.”
Gu Yan, whose gaze was still on Lin Ning, immediately snapped his eyes back upon hearing the words “Comrade Ye” and “Uncle.”
“Comrade Ye? Her uncle gave her this can? Do you know her uncle’s name, which military district he’s in, or his rank?”
Gu Rou was dazed for a moment by the sudden questions. “How should I know? We only met for the first day today. I only know her name is Ye Shiyu, she’s from Yancheng, and she’s a very, very gentle girl.”
Hearing the name Ye Shiyu and that she was from Yancheng, Gu Yan was basically certain that this Comrade Ye was likely an old acquaintance.
After thinking for a bit, he looked at Gu Rou and spoke: “Tell me everything that happened today from start to finish.”
Gu Rou paused and looked at him but didn’t speak immediately.
Her brother had always been like this since they were young. Whenever something happened, he would make her start from the very beginning. Especially back when she first met Lin Ning, he had grabbed her and insisted she recount how they met, what they said, and what they did—every single word, without omission.
That was why she had thought her brother liked her sister back then, and why she and her mother had created opportunities for them to get married.
But later, her brother insisted he didn’t like her and even said she wasn’t as simple as she appeared.
He said they had all been fooled!
Now, she just wanted to say: Sister is indeed not “simple,” the only simple ones are the members of the Gu family.
If Sister were as simple as they were, where would he get eggs and canned meat to eat!
So, although her brother was stubborn, his judgment of people was actually quite accurate.
And so, like pouring beans out of a jar, she recounted everything from the first sentence spoken after waking up that morning.
Not a sentence was skipped, not a word omitted, as she clarified everything that had happened that day.
Right up until they arrived at the cowshed.
Gu Yan listened quietly the whole time. Only after she finished did he speak, a good while later: “You’re saying there was a male youth at the station who was surprised your sister has a partner?”
Gu Rou: “Ah…?”
She was a bit confused. Was that something important?
Why would her brother mention that male youth?
Gu Rou suddenly became mysterious. “Brother, what’s wrong with that male youth?”
Gu Yan spoke: “She also said I was killed in action?”
Gu Rou seemed to understand a bit, her mouth hanging open in realization. “Brother, are you saying that male youth has designs on my sister?”
Gu Rou’s face suddenly turned very ugly.
What kind of person dared to covet her sister?
Gu Yan turned to glance at Lin Ning, who hadn’t noticed them. In truth, they were already divorced. If she met a better person, getting remarried would be a good thing.
She wouldn’t have to suffer in the Great Northwest or deal with the troublesome affairs of their family!
But… a fellow educated youth?
What was his character like? His family background? His family’s reputation? His looks?
She seemed to have quite high standards, so even if she remarried, the man couldn’t be worse than the Gu family used to be.
“Rourou, you stay with your sister every day. She will definitely have many pursuers around her in the future. Since we can’t be by her side, you must…” keep a close watch!
The most crucial words didn’t have time to leave his mouth.
Gu Rou had already beaten him to the punch: “I will definitely guard her strictly and eliminate any possibility of anyone snatching my sister away.”
Gu Yan: “…!”
He paused, feeling the need to explain clearly!
“That’s not what I meant. She and I are already divorced. If she has a better choice, we should wish her well.”
As soon as Gu Yan finished, the look Gu Rou gave him turned sharp: “Brother, what kind of brother are you? Sister has done all this for you, and you want to abandon her?”
Gu Yan felt like he had been struck with a club for no reason. “How is this abandoning her? Your sister can have a better choice. Our family is in this state; we shouldn’t drag her down!”
Gu Rou shook her head. “If my sister wanted a better life, she could have stayed in the city. Why did she insist on following you here? It’s because she loves you. I’m telling you, even though you’re my brother, I won’t allow you to fail my sister.”
