The Venomous Wife Let Me Go - Chapter 28.2
When another unknown number called that day, Bai Jun’s first reaction was that the old men on the board had likely come up with some new trick. She felt almost eager for the confrontation as she picked up the phone.
However, a strange female voice spoke from the other end.
“It’s me, Song Yu.”
“Bai Jun, I just returned to the country two days ago. I heard you haven’t been feeling well lately and that the company is facing some trouble. I have some connections abroad and might be able to help you find people. Can we meet and talk?”
In Bai Jun’s impression, Song Yu was merely an ordinary, unremarkable primary school classmate. But after so many years, for Song Yu to be willing to extend a hand during her time of need suggested that in her forgotten memories, the two had more of a connection.
Bai Jun also wanted to confirm if there was a link between Song Yu and Song’s Industry the company that had repeatedly offered help during her crisis.
Without her memories, it was indeed inconvenient to meet someone from her past. But thinking of how busy Lin Song had been lately, Bai Jun eventually agreed. She couldn’t rely on Lin Song for everything. During the meeting, she would simply try to speak as little as possible.
Song Yu’s tone made it sound as if she knew about the depression; after all, with so many people on the board, there were no secrets in this world. If Song Yu noticed something was off, Bai Jun could blame everything on her medication and poor memory.
With that in mind, Bai Jun agreed to meet her the following day.
After hanging up, Bai Jun wanted to look up information on Song Yu, but her phone still couldn’t access the internet. She had to call Xu Tu to ask. In the preceding days, under Lin Song’s guidance, she hadn’t gone online. She was almost entirely disconnected from society. While it made for a quiet life free from harassment, it was also extremely inconvenient.
Lin Song was likely afraid she would discover clues about the car accident, which was why she prevented her from connecting to the network. But she deserved to have her own life. Bai Jun made a silent resolution: once this matter was over, she had to find a way to get a new phone.
Hearing Bai Jun inquire about Song Yu, Xu Tu paused for a moment to organize her words before answering.
“Song Yu was your primary school classmate. Later, while you were studying abroad, she was also your classmate.”
“She is the youngest daughter of the Song Group. Her parents dote on her excessively. The Song Group has developed very well over the years. Currently, she works for the family’s film and television media company and is based abroad.”
“Three years ago, there were rumors that you were going to enter a marriage alliance with the Song family, but for some reason, the alliance didn’t go through. I wasn’t working by your side at that time, so I’m not clear on the specifics.”
Bai Jun was stunned. She had thought they were just ordinary friends, but she hadn’t expected their connection to be deeper than she imagined. For a moment, she regretted agreeing to the meeting. She did have a wife, after all. Even if her relationship with Lin Song was on the verge of collapse, she shouldn’t be in contact with someone she had almost entered a marriage alliance with.
But she had already promised Song Yu.
“I’m meeting Song Yu at a teahouse tomorrow,” she said, before adding almost instinctively to Xu Tu, “Lin Song is busy lately. Don’t tell her.”
As soon as she said it, Bai Jun felt something was wrong. Her tone sounded very much like a “scumbag woman” meeting a lover behind her wife’s back. But in an instant, she became self-righteous again.
Even though Xu Tu agreed after a brief silence, Xu Tu was Lin Song’s person; she would definitely tell Lin Song secretly! With Xu Tu watching over her, she was acting upright and had nothing to fear if Lin Song found out.
With this thought, Bai Jun calmly told Xu Tu the time and place for the next day’s meeting and asked Xu Tu to pick her up. However, perhaps due to a guilty conscience, she had a dream that night.
In the dream, a woman whose face was blurred was losing her temper at her.
“Bai Jun, what exactly do you take me for?”
“Can’t you see that I’ve always liked you? Yet in these past few meetings, you’ve treated me entirely as a business partner!”
“My family didn’t agree to the alliance with you. This was an opportunity I fought so hard to get, overcoming all obstacles!”
Facing the woman who was breaking down while expressing her love, Bai Jun’s heart at the time had been extremely calm.
“I’m sorry. I thought we were just a commercial marriage alliance, which is why I agreed to the contact.”
“You should listen to your elders.”
She pursed her lips and lowered her head. “I don’t think we are suitable for marriage. I can play the role of a dutiful wife, but I truly cannot give you any emotional feedback. I’m sorry. I will explain to the elders; it’s my problem.”
The dream was too real, just like a past memory. The next day, as she left the house and recalled the scenes from the dream, Bai Jun felt increasingly uneasy. She shouldn’t be meeting Song Yu.
Especially since, while in the car, she received another call from Lin Song. Bai Jun made up a casual excuse, saying she was going out to buy dessert.
Lin Song didn’t mind and continued to comfort her, updating her on the latest progress.
“It’s good for you to go out and clear your head. Just remember to wear your mask. I’ve found a way to track Manager Bai’s whereabouts. Once he shows his face, we will coordinate with the police to take him into custody.”
Lin Song really seemed unaware of the purpose of her trip. For a split second, Bai Jun actually felt a sense of guilt. But seeing Xu Tu in the front seat and remembering how they had collectively deceived her, Bai Jun hardened her heart and continued the pretense with Lin Song.
“You should also watch your rest and take care of yourself,” Bai Jun said, forcing a smile out of a lingering sense of conscience. “I’ll have Xu Tu bring some delicious food over to you.”
She spoke for a few more minutes to coax the increasingly difficult-to-coax Lin Song. Bai Jun finally breathed a sigh of relief as she hung up, reminding Xu Tu to stop by the dessert shop on the corner on the way back.
She reclined in the back seat. Even though everything was arranged, she still felt uneasy. After a thought, she took the wedding ring out of her pocket and put it on her middle finger. She had taken it off when she realized Lin Song was lying to her.
She hoped she was overthinking things. But Song Yu’s identity was sensitive; by showing her married status, someone in this circle who valued “face” like Song Yu shouldn’t pester her anymore.
Bai Jun met Song Yu at the teahouse. As a child, Song Yu had been a quiet and thin girl, but she had grown into a beauty with striking makeup and an outstanding figure. She had attracted many gazes on her way in.
Bai Jun had Xu Tu pull the screen to block out the outside view before cautiously removing her mask. A familiar scent of perfume lingered in the air. Bai Jun realized in a daze that this was one of the perfumes Lin Song had worn in the hospital room—the one Lin Song had asked her about, comparing it to the “S” series.
She remembered her dream again. The Lin Song in the dream had said she named a perfume after the “Y” series, and rumors said it was created for Song Yu. Was this it?
At that thought, the feeling of unease surfaced again.
“You look much better than the last time we met!” Song Yu sat down, her eyes fixed on Bai Jun.
Bai Jun felt things were taking a turn for the worse. Song Yu’s eyes were brimming with tears, looking as if Bai Jun had bullied her. If Lin Song found out, would she take the opportunity to cause a scene?
Bai Jun could only look toward Xu Tu for help, but Xu Tu was huddled in the corner, staring out the window as if to avoid the scene.
“I’ve had many girlfriends abroad over the years, but I could never forget you.”
She had overestimated Song Yu’s moral bottom line; the woman across from her was actually baring her heart to a married woman!
“I always dream of the scenes from our childhood,” Song Yu said, her eyes nostalgic. “When we were kids, several older girls used to bully me. You were about the same age as me, yet you dared to stand up to them. You weren’t even afraid of the parents being called. Back then, I thought you were incredibly brave. I liked you even then.”
“I only found out recently that you have severe depression. I’ve been thinking about you all these days,” Song Yu stared at Bai Jun’s expression. “When you rejected the marriage alliance back then, were your symptoms already starting? Was that why you couldn’t be with me?”
“I was too young and proud back then. I was hurt by your indifference, but I should have noticed something sooner.”
“It’s all in the past. I’m married now.” Bai Jun pursed her lips and interrupted her, flashing the wedding ring on her finger. If she had known she’d encounter this scene, she wouldn’t have come for anything in the world!
“I came because of the matter with Manager Bai,” she tried to pull the conversation back on track. “Also, is Song’s Industry a business owned by your family?”
“I already gave instructions to have my friends abroad look out for you. I’ve always taken your matters to heart. The owner of Song’s Industry is extremely mysterious; I don’t know who it is either. I only know they developed incredibly fast and have become industry leaders in just a few years. We’ve wanted to collaborate but could never find an opening.”
“As for that ‘vase’ actress wife of yours,” Song Yu gazed at her earnestly, “you must have been blinded by her beauty before. But you’ve been married for so long now; you must be tired of even the most beautiful face. You should know who the most suitable person for you is.”
Bai Jun pursed her lips. This was the norm in this circle. Everyone seemed to accept that so-called love could never compare to the entanglement of interests. For profit, fathers would betray sons, and lovers would become enemies. The old version of her seemed to have believed this as well.
Bai Jun didn’t know what her pre-amnesia self would have chosen, but now she was tired of, and even disgusted by, the ecology of this so-called circle.
“Thank you for being willing to help. But I must excuse myself.” She felt she couldn’t stay a moment longer and stood up. “I’m afraid my wife will misunderstand. And she is not a ‘vase.’ She is not only beautiful but also very clever.”
Bai Jun couldn’t tolerate Song Yu evaluating Lin Song like that. If it weren’t for Lin Song’s hidden motives, she truly would have wanted to spend the rest of her life with her.
“Actually, I’m not that brave.” So much so that she didn’t have the courage to have a showdown with Lin Song even now. Meeting Song Yu’s startled eyes, she turned around. “The reason I stood up to those three girls back then was because I knew their families were business partners with mine. I was certain their families wouldn’t dare to have a conflict with mine. What you like, from beginning to end, is a polished illusion of me.”
Compared to Song Yu, Lin Song’s modicum of affection felt more real—because that “wicked woman” at least craved her body.
On the way out, a light seemed to flash from somewhere, but Bai Jun didn’t pay it any mind. On the way back, Xu Tu drove to the dessert shop.
After seeing Song Yu, Bai Jun felt increasingly guilty and couldn’t help but pick out several desserts to bring back to Lin Song. While waiting for the sweets, Bai Jun felt a bit dazed. Last time, at this same shop, she had received the USB drive from her father.
She still hadn’t figured out her father’s intention in sending that drive. It was only then that she suddenly realized she hadn’t seen her father at all since receiving it. He hadn’t attended the board meetings, and his phone wouldn’t go through. Where exactly was he?
Just then, her phone rang again. It was the police officer investigating her car accident.
“Miss Bai, after a period of interrogation, the details of your case are mostly clear. The suspect, Zhan Hui, has fully confessed to hiring someone to commit murder.”
“I’m sorry, I… I didn’t hear you clearly. Who did you say the suspect is?”
Bai Jun’s eyes widened, suspecting she was hallucinating. The police officer on the other end seemed to hesitate out of pity before speaking again.
“It is Zhan Hui.”
The officer was still saying something, but Bai Jun felt as if everything had gone silent. Her world was roaring. How was that possible?
She had focused all her suspicion on Lin Song, believing she had conspired with Lin Feng. She had never imagined that the person who wanted to kill her was someone else entirely. And that person was her own biological father.
