The Venomous Wife Let Me Go - Chapter 28.1
Bai Jun bit her lower lip and made a decision on the spot: she would move to the village as soon as possible. Right now, immediately!
The longing in Lin Song’s voice was too obvious. She feared that if she stayed any longer, there would come a day when a lack of restraint from Lin Song would lead to her getting her way, leaving Bai Jun entangled with her forever. She didn’t want to live this kind of conflicted life anymore. A short pain is better than a long one.
However, given Lin Song’s current state, it was clear she wouldn’t agree to let Bai Jun move out alone. The only way was to act first and report later. Since she hadn’t brought much luggage when she moved from the villa, it wouldn’t take long to pack up and run.
Tomorrow, once Lin Song went to work, she would pack lightly and leave for the village. By the time she was immersed in her perfume research there, Lin Song wouldn’t be able to force her back. As for a driver, Bai Jun thought about it and decided to contact Xu Tu. Xu Tu didn’t seem to have as many hidden agendas as Lin Song. She only had to lie and say she left something at the village and needed to retrieve it; Xu Tu would surely be willing to take her. Once they were there and she refused to leave, there would be nothing Xu Tu could do.
With her plan in place and her mind set on leaving Lin Song, Bai Jun suddenly felt a pang of reluctance as the moment drew near. Especially after dinner, while she was mentally mapping out her escape, Lin Song brought her a foot-soaking basin.
“You’ve been walking all day; you must be tired.” Meeting Bai Jun’s complex gaze, Lin Song knelt halfway down in front of her.
The basin was already filled with herbal packets, and the water temperature was perfect. Lin Song took off Bai Jun’s slippers, placed her feet in the water, and gently massaged the pressure points on her legs.
Lin Song had always been remarkably good at taking care of people. The warm floor lamp cast a soft glow over her, softening her usually sharp and striking features. At this moment, Lin Song looked like nothing more than an ordinary, beautiful wife.
If only they were a real, mutually loving couple, how wonderful that would be! Once she left Lin Song, she doubted she would ever meet someone she liked this much again.
Bai Jun felt a sense of desolation. Although she had been caught up in so much chaos since waking up, her emotions were more often than not swayed by Lin Song. She had been so genuinely happy to marry her. Who could have imagined their relationship would turn out like this?
“Do you… do you have any difficulties that you can’t solve?” Bai Jun bit her lip, her eyes feeling swollen. Looking at Lin Song, she finally couldn’t help but ask.
Although the Bai Group was currently in a financial crisis and cash flow was tight, it wasn’t as if she couldn’t move a single cent. She still had clothes and jewelry she could sell secretly to scrape together some money for Lin Song. It would be a way to honor the last of their marital ties.
Lin Song seemed startled and looked up at her. “Of course I do.” A smile returned to Lin Song’s eyes, but she let out a sigh. “I’ve been troubled lately by the thought that my wife doesn’t seem to like me enough.”
“That’s not true!” Bai Jun snapped, immediately denying it. How could Lin Song doubt her feelings? She liked Lin Song so much that even knowing she might have had a hand in her near-death experience, she hadn’t sent her to prison. Was that not love enough?
“It’s you who doesn’t like me enough!” Bai Jun couldn’t hold back the grievance in her heart; her voice even carried a hint of a sob. It was this hateful, wicked woman who had her “White Moonlight” in her heart yet insisted on acting the part of a loving spouse, tricking Bai Jun into falling for her.
“Jun-jun, don’t cry. I was just joking.” Seeing her like this, Lin Song grew visibly flustered. She hurriedly dried Bai Jun’s feet, put on her shoes, washed her hands, and came back to embrace her.
“It’s my fault.” In front of Bai Jun, Lin Song always apologized quickly. It seemed that when it came to Bai Jun, she never held onto a grudge. “If there’s anything I’m doing wrong, tell me and I’ll change it immediately. Just don’t be angry.”
Bai Jun belatedly realized she had lost her composure. She shouldn’t be crying for a deceptive woman anymore, nor should she constantly bicker with Lin Song over questions of love. If she wasn’t loved by Lin Song, she should at least maintain her final shred of pride.
She bit her lip, trying to find flaws in Lin Song to use as evidence of her lack of love, but in her memory, Lin Song had been beyond reproach in every single instance. Aside from the fact that she had intentionally approached her with the intent of murder and theft, as a wife, Lin Song was practically perfect.
The more Bai Jun thought about it, the angrier she got, finally grasping at the past as an excuse. “You lied to me!” she shouted. This deceptive woman had fooled her so thoroughly!
As expected, Lin Song looked guilty the moment she said those words. Her face even turned slightly pale for an instant.
“You…” Lin Song forced a smile, carefully studying Bai Jun’s expression. The hands holding Bai Jun even began to tremble slightly. “What did you find out? Or did you remember something? Jun-jun, I’m sorry,” she lowered her voice, sounding somewhat incoherent. “I… I really like you, so…”
Panicking now, are we? Bai Jun thought. Afraid I’ve remembered the truth about the accident!
Bai Jun held her head high. She thought she would feel a sense of satisfaction, but looking at Lin Song’s panicked state, she felt no joy at all in her heart. Give me a little more time, she told herself. Once she got through this, left this scorpion-hearted woman, and time had healed the wounds, she would definitely never feel pity for Lin Song again.
“You actually hid the truth about Sister Bai Hong’s condition from me. Her illness is clearly very serious!” Bai Jun kept a cold, stern face as she continued. She still had to keep the deceptive woman distracted; now was not the time to reveal everything.
“I’m sorry.” Knowing that Bai Jun hadn’t recovered her memories, Lin Song seemed to breathe a secret sigh of relief, and her expression relaxed considerably. “At that time, I only wanted you to recover properly without being disturbed by other things, so I brushed you off. But you can’t say I don’t like you because of that.”
Lin Song stared at her, looping the conversation back to the start. She gazed at Bai Jun intently, her tone incredibly solemn. “That is a massive accusation to me. I know I’ve done some things that made you very unhappy, but when the time is right, I will explain everything to you clearly.”
Bai Jun met Lin Song’s dark eyes. Lin Song’s eyes had always been exceptionally bright, and when they were fixed on Bai Jun, it seemed they held only her reflection. In that moment, Bai Jun truly believed what she had told herself a thousand times before: perhaps Lin Song really did like her a little. Otherwise, after the accident, she could have chosen not to save her and let her perish, yet she had saved her.
But such affection was weighed down by too many conflicts of interest. Who knew how much sincerity was left? After experiencing her aunt’s betrayal, Bai Jun no longer dared to wish for something as ethereal as love. She didn’t want to guess, and she certainly didn’t want to gamble. If she were to be loved, she only wanted a steadfast, unique devotion.
She pursed her lips, unwilling to discuss the topic with a woman who had a first love in her heart. The silence between them was broken by the simultaneous ringing of their phones.
The son of one of the company directors had been drunk driving with a group of “rich second-generation” friends a few days ago, and after hitting someone, he had actually fled the scene! Unfortunately for him, cameras were everywhere nowadays, and a passerby had captured a clear shot of his face. The photos were going viral, and his identity was quickly exposed. The victim was in critical condition and required massive medical expenses. The director’s family had fled abroad and vanished, so the victim’s relatives had set up banners outside the Bai Group headquarters, attracting a swarm of reporters and media.
The Bai Group’s reputation was already damaged because of the new perfume; this incident was adding insult to injury.
“President Bai, the family is currently demanding that you show your face and give them an explanation.”
Bai Jun gripped her phone, trembling with rage. These relatives had relied on the Bai Group to accumulate massive wealth for years and held high positions in the company, yet when they caused trouble, they actually wanted to dump the mess on the company!
“Xu Tu,” Bai Jun hadn’t even figured out how to respond when Lin Song, who had already hung up her own call, reached out and took Bai Jun’s phone. “Come over now and take President Bai back to the villa. My place is too close to the office; it might not be safe.”
She clearly knew exactly what was happening and reacted quickly, making orderly deployments. She instructed the security guards to stop blocking the victim’s family and instead take them to the reception room. Any media on the scene who wanted to enter were also to be received.
“I’ll be there in ten minutes.”
This was a version of Lin Song that Bai Jun wasn’t familiar with; she acted with a level of veteran professionalism that didn’t match her age at all. In just a few sentences, she had arranged everything. Bai Jun, who had been anxious and lost, found her anchor in that moment.
“I’ll handle everything. I’ll show my face for you.” After hanging up, Lin Song turned and touched Bai Jun’s face. Meeting Bai Jun’s complex gaze, her tone carried a hint of clear apology. “However, I might not be able to come home to be with you for a while. I only just retired from the industry, and I still have a lot of public heat on me. I’m worried someone might follow me here and hurt you. In a few days, once things are resolved, I’ll go back to the villa to stay.”
Bai Jun pursed her lips. The plan she had been secretly calculating had suddenly become a reality: she could indeed separate from Lin Song temporarily with a valid reason. Yet, Bai Jun didn’t feel as happy as she expected.
She gave a low “Mm” and couldn’t stop herself from adding, “You should be careful too.”
“Their demand is for compensation and an apology. If my attitude is good, they shouldn’t do anything to me.” Lin Song smiled and pressed a kiss to Bai Jun’s forehead, reminding her, “Remember to take your medicine every day and rest on time.”
She had been decisive and sharp when arranging matters, but in front of Bai Jun, she seemed to become a chatterbox. It wasn’t until her phone rang again that she changed her clothes and rushed to the company.
Not long after, Xu Tu arrived. Bai Jun silently packed her bags and, after some thought, decided to go to the villa as Lin Song had arranged. Everything regarding the Bai Group should have been her burden. Now that Lin Song was taking it all on her behalf, she couldn’t hide in the village with a clear conscience. The village was a dream utopia; it shouldn’t be a shelter for her to hide from difficulties. In the villa, if any emergency occurred, she could at least respond in time.
They soon reached the villa. By the time she was settled in, it was 11:00 PM. Still worried, she dialed Lin Song’s number. Lin Song was still in the office.
“Tell me the truth about what happened,” Bai Jun said, biting her lip. “If you hide it from me, I will be very angry.”
“Things are a bit tricky,” Lin Song’s eyes looked weary, but they still held a soothing smile when she looked at her. “The family is demanding an exorbitant amount, and Manager Bai refuses to show up with his son. But it’s okay; he can’t hide for long. What’s more troublesome right now is handling the public outcry; it’s triggered a wave of condemnation against the privileges of the wealthy, but it’s still within controllable limits.”
Although Lin Song was tired, she didn’t look panicked. Seeing her like this, Bai Jun felt somewhat relieved. Thinking of Lin Song working so hard on her behalf, she couldn’t help but offer a stiff, awkward reminder: “Then you should also remember to rest. Leave work and go home to sleep soon.”
“But Jun-jun isn’t home.” The woman on the screen, dressed formally, began to act like a spoiled child. “Without Jun-jun there, there’s no point in going home. Jun-jun, I’m so tired, so annoyed, and I feel so bad. I need you to coax me before I can recover.”
Bai Jun could guess how to “coax” her with her eyes closed. That wretched woman was truly full of schemes! Bai Jun bit her lip, regretting her moment of mercy just now—she shouldn’t have felt bad for her.
“I’m hanging up!” Bai Jun hung up with a flushed face. Right after, Sister Zhang brought her the medicine, clearly having received a call from Lin Song. Bai Jun didn’t try to throw it away this time and swallowed it with her eyes closed.
Over the next few days, she kept a close eye on the company situation. Lin Song, knowing she was anxious, updated her daily.
The victim’s family had two demands: first, a negotiable sum of compensation; second, that Manager Bai bring his son, who had yet to turn himself in, to apologize and face legal consequences. However, Manager Bai never showed up. Instead, he began selling off his shares in secret and had already met with several potential buyers.
Hit by one blow after another this year, the Bai Group’s stock price continued to plummet. Bai Jun felt increasingly exhausted. With the culprit failing to show, and the victim’s family constantly protesting, Bai Jun had Lin Song suspend Manager Bai from his position and withhold his bonuses to compensate the family, at least ensuring the victim’s survival for now.
Yet some elders still refused to repent, using their seniority to call Bai Jun’s phone. “He is your second cousin, after all. We’re all relatives. He was just overindulgent with his child; is there a need to make things so ugly? If your grandfather were still here…”
“Then you should go to my grandfather’s grave and burn some incense. If he appears in my dreams tonight and tells me to do that, I’ll follow his orders! Or, perhaps you can pool your money to raise the company’s stock price after it dropped because of this?”
“Ah, my head hurts so much! Sorry, my illness is flaring up again. Don’t mind if I said the wrong thing. I need to take my medicine. If there’s nothing else, I’m hanging up.”
In the beginning, Bai Jun refused to answer any unknown numbers, but once they became too annoying, she simply countered every single one of them. She suddenly realized that some people don’t deserve courtesy; it only encourages them to take more. Letting them walk all over her was the greatest harm she could do to herself. After her series of sharp rebukes, the strange calls finally stopped.
Bai Jun felt she hadn’t quite finished; she felt her retorts weren’t up to her usual standard and even secretly hoped someone else would come to persuade her. At worst, they could all go down together. In any case, under the current circumstances, it was already going to be very difficult for the Bai Group to weather this crisis.
The best-case scenario would be a buyout; the worst would be a declaration of bankruptcy.
Perhaps the version of her before the amnesia would have tried every possible way to save the group. After all, she had sacrificed too much over the years; she surely wouldn’t have been able to let go so easily. But now, Bai Jun had forgotten everything. She felt an immense weariness toward it all. She would do her best, but she would no longer continue to berate herself.
