- Chapter 21 - What to Do When My Wife Loves Me Too Much (21)
Coming out of the amusement park, Lin Song and Bai Jun went to the wet market together to buy groceries.
Bai Jun had never been to a place like this before. Her eyes were wide, finding everything fresh and fascinating. The air was a thick mixture of the smell of raw meat and soil, the pungency of cooking oil smoke, and the sweat of the passing crowds. Even with a mask on, the scent felt incredibly stifling.
Yet, at the same time, she saw it all: market aunties arguing loudly, student couples walking far apart but blushing whenever they caught each other’s eye, elderly grandfathers and grandmothers strolling hand-in-hand to buy vegetables, and stall owners shouting their wares. The “fire and smoke” of human life broke into her field of vision in a direct, vivid way, and she found herself unable to look away.
Lin Song seemed to see that she liked this environment, so she simply took her hand and they walked back slowly together.
The moon came out. Unlike the hurried pace of the day, the night was even more boisterous. A breeze blew off the river. After finishing a tiring day of work and as darkness fell, people finally found a moment of personal freedom in the cracks of survival. There were young men and women laughing as they walked into bars, various food stalls along the roadside, and salarymen in sharp suits clutching handfuls of grilled skewers while complaining about their unscrupulous bosses.
In such an environment, Bai Jun felt incredibly comfortable. Looking at the various delicacies on the roadside stalls, she almost could not move her legs. She knew Lin Song could not withstand her pleading, so she looked up and begged her with watery eyes.
As expected, Lin Song pinched her cheek in mock annoyance and, with a stern face, bought her the grilled skewers.
However, Bai Jun also could not withstand Lin Song’s own pleading. When Lin Song looked at her with those beautiful eyes and begged, “Jun-jun, I have already bought the groceries. Save some room in your stomach to eat the meal I cook, okay?” Bai Jun reluctantly gave up on the rest of the street food.
After returning home, Lin Song went straight into the kitchen. Bai Jun originally wanted to go in and help, but Lin Song pushed her out and turned on the television for her.
“You promised me before that you would never enter the kitchen again,” Lin Song said, looking at her with deep affection. “Because I love the feeling of cooking for you.”
While Lin Song said this, her mind flashed back to their time in the village when Bai Jun had tried to help her roast sweet potatoes and ended up scarring her finger from a burn. At that time, her feelings for Bai Jun had likely already changed, though she had not realized it then. Looking at the scar on Bai Jun’s fair finger, she had felt a strange, inexplicable urge to take that finger into her mouth. She had made a silent vow then: if she could truly stay by Bai Jun’s side for the rest of her life, she would never let her enter the kitchen again.
Bai Jun looked at Lin Song in surprise, not expecting that such a promise existed between them. But Lin Song’s expression did not look like she was lying. And given Lin Song’s “love-brain” nature, she seemed exactly like the type of person who would do such a thing.
Thus, Bai Jun sat awkwardly on the sofa. She did not want to watch TV at all; she only wanted to look at Lin Song.
Sigh! How can Lin Song love me this much?
The corners of Bai Jun’s mouth curved upward uncontrollably. Looking at Lin Song’s busy figure in the kitchen, she could not help but sneak a few photos. This feeling was so happy! It was a pity she could not remember her friends’ contact information, otherwise, she would definitely show off her affection to everyone. In her memory, she had a bunch of “little followers,” and she wondered how everyone had turned out now that they were grown up.
Lin Song finished cooking quickly. Bai Jun had not expected Lin Song to have such excellent culinary skills; the dishes were exceptionally delicious. Bai Jun accidentally overate and lay on the sofa groaning. Lin Song came over to rub her stomach, and Bai Jun could clearly see that Lin Song was holding back a smile.
Feeling a bit embarrassed and annoyed, Bai Jun leaned over to tickle Lin Song. Amidst the playfulness, the smile on Bai Jun’s face suddenly froze.
Oh no!
She clutched her stomach and ran into the bathroom with a pained expression. She ran to the bathroom three times, feeling completely exhausted, yet she was too embarrassed to complain to Lin Song. Throughout the day, Lin Song had eaten almost exactly the same food as her; it was highly probable that those few skewers of grilled meat were the problem.
She was the one who had begged Lin Song to let her eat them. Now that her stomach ached, she had to take responsibility for it.
As she ran out of the bathroom for the third time clutching her stomach, she saw Lin Song waiting nearby. Lin Song pursed her lips as she opened a capsule and poured the medicine inside into a water cup.
Since waking up after the car accident, Bai Jun had never seen this expression on Lin Song’s face. Lin Song’s lips were pressed tight and her brows were furrowed, appearing extremely frustrated and anxious.
Is she worried about me?
Bai Jun remembered what she had learned from Auntie Feng and could not help but sigh, intentionally making a noise to get her attention. Lin Song seemed startled, her hand shaking so much she nearly spilled the water in the cup. But in an instant, she adjusted her emotions, walked over to hand Bai Jun several pills, and helped her sit at the table.
“The family doctor just sent these over,” Lin Song said softly. “He said to observe you tonight. If your stomach still feels bad, we will go back to the hospital.”
Bai Jun gave an “Mm,” took the pills, swallowed them, and then reached for the water cup in Lin Song’s hand. Lin Song seemed a bit absent-minded; Bai Jun did not manage to take it on the first try. It was only when Bai Jun looked at her in confusion that she let go.
Bai Jun drank the water in the cup in one gulp and immediately furrowed her brows.
“So bitter! I have never had such bitter medicine in my life!”
She was intentionally acting up to make Lin Song happy, but Lin Song looked somewhat sad, with tears flickering in her eyes. Lin Song lowered her head, her voice muffled and stifled.
“I do not want to see you suffering and having to take this medicine.”
Bai Jun had only intended to act a little spoiled, but seeing Lin Song so heartbroken for her, she began to feel embarrassed.
“I am sorry. I won’t eat random things anymore. I will get better as soon as possible, so don’t be sad.”
She awkwardly and clumsily mimicked Lin Song’s usual manner and took Lin Song’s hand. Lin Song’s complex gaze landed on her cheek. She gave a soft “Mm” and leaned in to hug her.
In Bai Jun’s impression, although Lin Song was delicate, she possessed a stubborn, unyielding spirit. This was the first time she had seen Lin Song look so fragile and dejected, as if she had encountered a particularly thorny problem.
She must be struggling with how to bring it up to me, right?
Bai Jun sighed in her heart and decided to speak first.
“I’m sorry!” she whispered. “I saw that you weren’t yourself, and I couldn’t help but call Auntie Feng to ask.”
“Mm,” Lin Song replied softly while holding her. “I know.”
Seeing that Lin Song did not intend to blame her, Bai Jun felt relieved and continued.
“Although I am indeed a bit nervous and don’t know what I should do at the board meeting, you really don’t need to worry about me. Even though I only remember things up to when I was twelve, my mother trained me from a young age. I have a general idea of what to do in those kinds of situations.”
“It is not that I am afraid you cannot handle it. You have always been the best in my heart,” Lin Song finally spoke. “I am just afraid they will make you unhappy.”
“It is still because I am not powerful enough.”
Bai Jun did not know where Lin Song had developed such a strange obsession. Her wife began to blame herself again, her voice sounding muffled and stifled. “If only I were a bit more capable, I could shield you from everyone who harbors malice toward you. I could let you be happy every day, just a joyful little child.”
“Do you want to put me in a protective shell?”
Bai Jun could not help but laugh. Although Lin Song’s words sounded a bit petulant, she was deeply moved by how much Lin Song cared for her. “Even though I have said this to you many times, I still want to say it: having such a wonderful wife, I am incredibly happy every day.”
Bai Jun did not know if Lin Song had truly taken her words to heart. She only felt Lin Song pull her into a tighter embrace, burying her head against Bai Jun’s chest.
When she woke up the next morning, Lin Song had already left for work again.
Bai Jun had slept well that night. Perhaps due to her physical weakness, those distressing dreams no longer plagued her. However, she felt lethargic throughout the following day, even experiencing moments of nausea and retching.
Lin Song, meanwhile, was becoming busier. She was even more occupied than before, sometimes staying at the office late into the night. Even the background of her video calls had changed; she was no longer always in her office. Sometimes she was in a wasteland, and other times she was in an empty factory building.
However, whenever she could not return home, she would always call promptly before Bai Jun went to sleep, instructing Sister Zhang to watch over her while she took her medicine. Lin Song said the medicine had been specially formulated by a doctor and would help with her recovery. Sister Zhang always brought the medicine up after taking it out of the packaging, so Bai Jun never saw the actual box.
Bai Jun took her medicine on time every day. She did indeed sleep well at night and no longer woke up startled in the middle of the night. However, the medication seemed to have strong side effects. She found herself becoming increasingly drowsy and listless. Day by day, she began to lose her drive, finding everything uninteresting. Only when she saw Lin Song did her emotions show any sign of a spark.
She felt herself becoming increasingly strange.
She felt she ought to be understanding of Lin Song; after all, Lin Song was working this hard because of her. Even though she was busy, Lin Song still called her on time every day, which was considerate enough. Yet, deep down, a strange sense of resentment toward Lin Song began to grow.
Is Lin Song tired of living with me? Does she still love me?
When she realized she was having such thoughts, Bai Jun panicked instantly. She did not know why she was having these bizarre ideas, but she felt she could not go on like this. She needed to find something to keep herself busy as soon as possible.
She was no longer in the state of infinite inspiration she had enjoyed a while ago. Her perfume formulation had hit a bottleneck. Consequently, she decided to put the perfume aside for a moment and focus on decorating their future home.
More than half a month had passed, and the renovation of the villa was complete. However, because the formaldehyde needed to dissipate after the renovation, Bai Jun and Lin Song had not yet moved in. The structural work was only the first step; creating a warm atmosphere depended more on the details of a home. Bai Jun decided to add some beautiful decorations.
She had already made a plan and decided to go shopping with Xu Tu. Lin Song did not stop her; she only reminded her to be careful and told Xu Tu to keep a close watch.
In truth, even without Lin Song’s instructions, Xu Tu was already on high alert. Since the last time he took Bai Jun out and her identity was accidentally exposed, the already taciturn Xu Tu had become even more silent. Following Bai Jun on these outings, he acted like a startled bird, extremely wary of the slightest disturbance.
Bai Jun bought many beautiful things for the house: lovely wind chimes, soft cushions, cute flower pots, and a luxurious dressing table suitable for Lin Song. Watching the house being filled bit by bit and imagining it as the place where she and Lin Song would live, the anxiety in Bai Jun’s heart gradually calmed.
She would have a very warm home and live with Lin Song for a long time. Whenever she thought of this, she felt a profound sense of happiness from the bottom of her heart.
On this particular day, she planned to buy clothes for Lin Song. Since living together, she had noticed that Lin Song had pitifully few clothes. Most were standard formal suits, with only a few pieces of casual wear.
She used to be a big star, so how can she be so indifferent to her daily appearance?
Bai Jun had always wanted to find an opportunity to fill Lin Song’s wardrobe. She went to a brand that her mother used to frequent. It was a membership-only brand that required a certain number of points to purchase specific products.
After handing over her card, Bai Jun began to browse. During this time, a shop assistant called Xu Tu away, saying there were some procedures to handle. Bai Jun did not mind, focusing entirely on picking out clothes that would suit Lin Song.
Suddenly, a familiar, furious voice rang out from behind her.
“Bai Jun, you lunatic! I knew you would come here to shop!”
“Aunt?”
Bai Jun turned around in pleasant surprise.
“When did you get back?”
