- Chapter 20 - What to Do When My Wife Loves Me Too Much (20)
Bai Jun was slightly dazed.
She understood her own personality well enough to know that after witnessing her father’s infidelity, she would certainly never reconcile with him. The problem was, how did this father, who usually ignored her and lived abroad, know her preferences? How had he guessed she would visit this specific dessert shop and arranged for someone to hand her a USB drive?
Bai Jun sensed that something was wrong. Something felt as if it were about to emerge in her mind, yet in her current state, she could not connect the dots. After some thought, she decided to suppress the matter for now. Lin Song cared for her so deeply; if she knew Bai Jun’s family harbored such hostility toward her, she would undoubtedly be heartbroken.
Furthermore, Bai Jun had no intention of looking at the contents of that USB drive. Recently, Sister Zhang had been lecturing her daily on fraud prevention. She knew that modern technology was advanced and that many things could be forged. Given her father’s underhanded methods, the drive likely contained nothing good. She would not believe a single word of it.
“Jun-jun, what is wrong? Are you feeling unwell?”
It was not until they returned to the car and Lin Song fed her a small piece of cake that Bai Jun snapped out of her complicated thoughts. As the flavors awakened her senses, she met Lin Song’s concerned gaze.
She should not be thinking about anything else today. Her wife had worked hard to take her out, and the main task today was to make Lin Song happy. Future plans could wait; the joy of the present was far more important.
“It is nothing,” Bai Jun said with a smile, looking at Lin Song and speaking with a mix of truth and playfulness. “I just feel a bit guilty. I have forgotten your preferences, and I cannot remember what flavors you like.”
As expected, Lin Song was easy to coax. Hearing that Bai Jun was thinking of her, Lin Song’s eyes flickered and immediately became bright. “Jun-jun, you do not need to trouble yourself with remembering my hobbies. If there is something I want, I will take the initiative to strive for it myself.”
Bai Jun was speechless. To prove her point, Lin Song took the spoon Bai Jun had just used, scooped a piece of cake into her own mouth, swallowed it slowly, and narrowed her eyes at her with a smile. In that moment, Lin Song’s gaze seemed to have hooks, making Bai Jun’s heart race and her throat go dry. The tips of her ears began to burn again.
Lin Song scooped another spoonful and brought it to Bai Jun’s lips. The delicious cake seemed to lose its flavor as the deafening thud of Bai Jun’s heartbeat took over. After finally finishing the box of cake, Bai Jun breathed a sigh of relief. “I am full. We can have the rest later.”
Her remaining words were muffled by Lin Song.
“Shh,” Lin Song whispered, leaning in to kiss the corner of Bai Jun’s mouth. “There is still a little cake here. I will help you clean it up.”
Lin Song’s voice grew husky, her lips shifting as she forcefully pried open Bai Jun’s teeth. Bai Jun’s eyes widened, and she could no longer think of anything else. Her world was filled with Lin Song’s stunningly beautiful, intoxicated eyes.
…
Bai Jun eventually collapsed onto the back seat, limp and breathless, glaring at Lin Song. She began to doubt her earlier decision: did a version of Lin Song like this really need her comfort?
Lin Song, however, remained high-spirited. She looked radiant, like a well-fed fox demon from a television show. She slowly put her mask back on and looked up at Bai Jun, unable to hide the smile in her eyes.
“It was indeed extremely delicious.”
The two of them then headed to the amusement park.
On the way, Lin Song stopped the car to buy snacks and drinks at a mall. During the stop, Lin Song visited a pharmacy for a moment and returned with several bottles of medicine.
“Just some vitamins,” Lin Song said with a natural expression.
Bai Jun did not pay it much mind. After buying her favorite foods, she got back into the car with excitement. Since it was a weekday, the park was not as crowded as it would be on a weekend.
Many years had passed, and compared to the park in Bai Jun’s memories, the facilities had been renovated and the area had expanded significantly. Bai Jun was curious about everything and wanted to experience every ride. Consequently, when she saw a crowd lining up for the haunted house, she pulled Lin Song to join the queue.
“Jun-jun, do you really want to go?” Lin Song had smiled and agreed to all her previous decisions, but seeing the haunted house, her eyes held a hint of hesitation. “You have only just recovered. You should not engage in activities that are too stimulating.”
“Are you afraid?” Bai Jun looked back at Lin Song. Feeling it was time to show her charm as the head of the household, she raised her head proudly. “There is nothing to fear in these places! If you are scared, just hold onto me tightly.”
Lin Song’s gaze still held some worry. However, Bai Jun looked extremely confident. After watching her for a moment, Lin Song could not bear to spoil her fun and followed silently behind her.
Bai Jun had frequented amusement parks as a child and was very familiar with haunted houses. Back then, they only consisted of a few low-quality skeletons and dolls; they were not scary at all. She had not expected modern haunted houses to be so advanced.
There was eerie music, sinister laughter echoing from nowhere, hidden mechanisms that triggered at any moment, and real actors playing NPCs.
Bai Jun regretted her decision almost immediately. When she saw a pool of unidentified red liquid on the ground ahead with an NPC lying in the middle, she could no longer hold it together. A similar image flashed through her mind, and she could not help but scream. Bursting into tears, she turned and threw her arms around Lin Song, her body trembling.
For the next while, Bai Jun stayed huddled in Lin Song’s arms. She was practically carried out of the haunted house, trembling all the way. She had not expected to be so embarrassed, nor did she know why she was so terrified.
Back on the surface, with the sun shining on her, it took a long time for Bai Jun to feel alive again. She kept her face buried in Lin Song’s embrace, too ashamed to look up. Lin Song’s voice, however, held no trace of disdain. She helped her sit on a nearby bench and patiently stroked her back.
“It is okay. It is all over now.”
Listening to Lin Song’s soothing words, the panic in Bai Jun’s heart gradually dissipated. She realized it was now dusk, and the sun was setting in the west. For some reason, a sudden sense of dread rose within her. Her heart felt as if it were soaked in warm water: warm, slightly swollen, and aching.
How could Lin Song be this good? Would she really stay this good forever?
Bai Jun’s nose felt itchy. Buried against Lin Song’s neck, she could not help but ask in a muffled voice: “You said before that you did not like me just because I sponsored you. Then, what exactly do you like about me?”
Bai Jun had always been confident. When she first woke up, she felt that she and Lin Song were a match made in heaven. But as they spent more time together and her love for Lin Song grew, a sense of unreality increased day by day. These days were so beautiful they felt like a dream. For reasons she did not understand, she felt a faint worry that the dream would shatter and that she was unworthy of such perfection. It was as if a pained soul inside her was constantly tearing at her.
Lin Song did not rush to answer. She was silent for a while, appearing to think seriously about the question. After a moment, she spoke softly.
“I like everything about you.”
“Strictly speaking, there is no specific reason. By the time I realized my feelings for you were love, I already loved you very much.”
“If I had to give a reason,” Lin Song paused and carefully pulled Bai Jun closer, “it is probably because you are the bravest person I have ever met.”
From a young age, Lin Song knew that to judge a person, one should not look at what they say, but what they do.
When did her heart start to flutter?
Perhaps it was when the city girl, who looked like a delicate flower, smelled blood on her and assumed she was a victim of domestic violence. Despite her frowning and clear dissatisfaction with the living conditions, she chose to stay in Lin Song’s drafty house. She had avoided the cameramen to secretly ask for the reason, handed her a sanitary pad, and patiently explained physiological facts to her despite Lin Song’s startled eyes. That moment of gratitude.
Or perhaps it was the sense of liberation when the neighbor, Scabby Zhang, poked a hole in the wall to spy on them while they bathed. Bai Jun had discovered it, marched to his door with a broom, and gave him a thorough beating.
Or maybe it was the joy when she was trapped in the mountains by a heavy rain while cutting wood. The delicate, clean city girl had fallen and gotten covered in mud, yet she braved the downpour to find her.
Or, perhaps, it was the heartache and shock when she realized that the beautiful city girl was not as untouched by hardship as she had thought. At that time, Bai Jun was actually in the darkest period of her life, unable to sleep at night, using every ounce of her strength just to stay alive.
…
Or maybe, it was just that first look Bai Jun cast her way when they met, which left an indelible mark in the depths of her heart.
That year, she made up her mind: in the future, she would earn a lot of money, work hard to get close to Bai Jun, become her closest person, and protect the beautiful, noble flower in her heart.
However, after the reality show called The Rebels aired, she became, in a sense, another perpetrator. She had explained to many people with all her might that Bai Jun was not as she appeared on television. But she was too weak then, and her voice was ignored by everyone.
They laughed and said she lacked experience, that she was merely blinded by the “sugar-coated bullets” of the Bai family. But she knew Bai Jun’s character better than anyone. The ones blinded by overwhelming traffic and wealth were never her.
When human hearts turn sinister, they are scarier than ghosts.
A single moment of malice from a rumor-monger forced the victim to innocently endure the malice of the world. The malice was like a flood, and day by day, Bai Jun became silent, like a gradually withering flower. In the past, Lin Song could only watch everything helplessly, not even having the right to approach her. She hated her own powerlessness.
Fearing she would be too late, she had not rested for a moment over the years. Fortunately, she had finally welcomed her chance to openly protect Bai Jun in her arms.
This was the first time since Bai Jun woke from the accident that Lin Song had bared her heart like this. But Bai Jun did not believe it. She frowned at Lin Song, feeling that her wife was actually mocking her.
She had just acted so embarrassingly that even the seven or eight-year-old children behind her were laughing at her. Yet Lin Song said she was brave? Gritting her teeth, she could not help but give Lin Song’s waist a light pinch.
“Ouch! That hurts!”
Her strength was light, but Lin Song theatrically slumped onto her shoulder, her eyes watery and filled with laughter.
“Your acting skills have really deteriorated!” Bai Jun was frustrated into a laugh by Lin Song’s antics and could not help but glare at her.
“I know,” Lin Song said, continuing to look at her with a smile. She sighed and touched Bai Jun’s face. “What should I do? I have lost my way of making a living. Will Jun-jun dislike me?”
“What nonsense are you talking!” Bai Jun glared again. “How could I be that kind of person?”
“I am not that kind of person either.”
Lin Song laughed. Meeting Bai Jun’s flushing face, she took her hand, and the two walked toward the final stop of the amusement park.
“So, Jun-jun, no matter what happens, I will be by your side.”
“Loving you is something that happened naturally; there is no definitive reason.”
“If I must have a wish, what I want is a happy Jun-jun. By my side, you can laugh when you want to laugh and be rowdy when you want to be rowdy. To be able to stay with you is the luck I have always dreamed of.”
Why was she saying such sweet things out of nowhere?
Bai Jun’s face turned bright red. Her heart felt as if it would overflow with joy, but she could not think of any words to respond. She could only grip Lin Song’s hand tightly. Perhaps, as Lin Song said, loving someone truly does not require a reason. Lin Song simply liked her.
This realization made the whole world seem brighter to Bai Jun. She was very glad she was wearing a mask to hide her irrepressible smile.
As Bai Jun stood at the very top of the Ferris wheel, the final stop, looking down as the city gradually sank into darkness, she felt as if a lamp were rising in her heart. She could not help but clasp her hands together, suppressing the sudden fear caused by the height, and made a sincere wish in the depths of her heart.
“I hope that Lin Song and I can be together forever.”
