Chapter 32: Addiction Brother how are you so amazing
Lu Yunchuan had spent the day in agony. Lu Changgui’s actions had severely affected his focus during the mock exams. His mind was spiraling with ways to escape this crisis. If he could just hold out until the college entrance exam results were out and his volunteer applications were finalized, he could move his household registration (hukou) out of the Fu family and finally be safe.
But he was powerless now. In his previous life, not long after he left the Fu family, Lu Changgui had gone to prison for six months over gambling debts. Only after being released did he take Lu Yunchuan back to the countryside.
He didn’t understand why things were different this time. Why wasn’t Lu Changgui in jail? And how did he have the audacity to sue someone as powerful as Fu Kaijiang? No matter how greedy Lu Changgui was, he shouldn’t be that stupid. If Fu Kaijiang wanted to crush a bottom-dweller like him, it would be effortless.
After a day of agonizing, it finally clicked: someone was pulling Lu Changgui’s strings.
It was Fu Lingchuan.
Fu Lingchuan must have contacted Lu Changgui and plotted behind the scenes to destroy Lu Yunchuan’s future. Since Lu Yunchuan had told Fu Xici about the political clearance zheng-shen issues, and Fu Xici had relayed that to their father, it wasn’t surprising that Fu Lingchuan had overheard the parents discussing it.
Lu Yunchuan saw it clearly now—Fu Lingchuan’s heart was truly black. No matter how many times he restarted his life, he couldn’t compete with Fu Lingchuan’s malice. The man was intent on driving him into a dead end.
Despite his suspicions, he had no evidence. Lu Yunchuan suppressed his anger, intending to discuss a solution with Big Brother when he got home.
However, Fu Xici was late. Lu Yunchuan returned from evening self-study to find the apartment empty. There were no replies to his WeChat messages, and his calls went unanswered. His anxiety spiked; Fu Xici was usually home by 10:00 PM, but it was now 11:00 PM.
Lu Yunchuan paced by the window, watching for Fu Xici’s car. It wasn’t until midnight that the digital lock chimed.
Lu Yunchuan stood up immediately. His bad mood combined with worry made him snap: “Where have you been? Do you have any idea how late it is? Don’t you know I’d be worried?”
Fu Xici’s leather shoes were caked in mud. He hung his black overcoat over his arm and looked at Lu Yunchuan before heading to the bathroom to deal with the mess.
“Why is there so much mud? Did you go farming?” Lu Yunchuan followed him.
Fu Xici dropped his shoes in the shower to be scrubbed later. He walked back out, took Lu Yunchuan by the wrist, and sat him down on the sofa. He pulled out his phone and realized he had missed several calls, messages, and two video chats.
Seeing Lu Yunchuan’s red eyes and trembling lip, Fu Xici began typing: I had to handle something, so I’m late. Don’t be angry. Regarding Lu Changgui, my father and I will solve it. Don’t let someone like that ruin your mood. The exams are coming up; you need to stay focused.
Lu Yunchuan read the message on the coffee table. Having to communicate via phone while sitting right next to each other was ridiculous, but the words worked. His panic subsided. He looked into Fu Xici’s eyes. “I knew you’d help me. You’re the only one who does. Please tell Dad not to give in to him yet.”
Fu Xici tossed the phone aside and opened his arms. “Come.”
Lu Yunchuan sighed and crawled into his brother’s embrace. Fu Xici smelled of grass and a lingering chill.
“What would I do without you, Brother? Life is so hard,” Lu Yunchuan whispered, hugging the man’s sturdy back.
Fu Xici stroked his hair with one hand and rested the other on his back. “Don’t be afraid.”
The Secret Operation
Fu Xici had no intention of letting anyone destroy Lu Yunchuan’s future. He had made sure Lu Changgui wouldn’t be bothering anyone for a long time.
In a derelict factory on the outskirts of the city, Zhao Yu held Lu Changgui’s phone on speakerphone. Lu Changgui and his lawyer were kneeling nearby, blindfolded and gagged, with their hands tied behind their backs. Two bodyguards stood watch.
Fu Xici, dressed in a classic black suit, sat on a worn stool, his long legs crossed. His new business shoes were polished to a mirror shine. His deep, sharp eyes watched Lu Changgui without a hint of emotion.
Fu Lingchuan’s voice came through the phone, frantic and demanding: “Don’t you want the rest of the money? Why is there no news? It’s almost May—when will the lawsuit be over?!”
Fu Xici reached out, ended the call, and signaled the bodyguards to take the men out. Lu Changgui and the lawyer had been kept in this factory for three days, ignored by the world. Lu Changgui was terrified; he knew the Fu family’s eldest son was ruthless, but he had no proof. He feared he was about to be killed.
However, Fu Xici found getting his hands dirty with the blood of such scum beneath him. He had discovered that Lu Changgui was a wanted fugitive with massive debts.
Once they reached the city, Fu Xici slipped away. He had Zhao Yu and the bodyguards drop Lu Changgui off directly at the police station. The lawyer was dumped halfway.
Lu Changgui was immediately detained. Even if he claimed he was threatened, no one believed a career criminal with a record of lies.
That same evening, Fu Xici—who rarely went back to the family villa—showed up and tossed a phone onto the coffee table in front of Fu Lingchuan.
Fu Lingchuan recognized it instantly as Lu Changgui’s phone. He began to tremble violently.
“Whose phone is this?” Jiang Wanyue asked, confused.
Fu Xici didn’t say a word to Fu Lingchuan. He simply waved his own phone at his father, Fu Kaijiang, signaling him to check his messages, and walked out.
The message read: Lu Changgui is in prison. His lawsuit is void. Get Yunchuan’s political clearance documents ready; I’ll pick them up tomorrow.
Fu Kaijiang was baffled. “Why did he suddenly go to jail? He was so arrogant a few days ago.”
Only Fu Lingchuan knew whose hand was behind this. He gripped his clothes, staring in terror at the phone Fu Xici had left behind as a silent, chilling warning.
The Reward
Back at the apartment, Lu Yunchuan received a message from Fu Xici saying the crisis was over. The haze of the past few days vanished instantly.
When Lu Yunchuan got home from school, he didn’t even stop to change his shoes. He sprinted toward Fu Xici, cupped his brother’s face in his hands, and showered him with kisses.
“Brother, how are you so amazing!”
Fu Xici’s eyes lit up with a rare, genuine smile. For Lu Yunchuan to be this proactive was a rare treat.
But as the kiss deepened, Fu Xici’s “addiction” flared up. He pinned Lu Yunchuan’s neck and kissed him with a ferocity that felt like he was trying to meld their flesh together.
Twenty minutes later, Lu Yunchuan broke away, gasping for air. His lip was slightly cut and bleeding. He retreated to the bathroom, looking at his swollen face in the mirror.
“I really shouldn’t initiate with him,” he muttered, touching the sting on his lip. “He kisses like he’s trying to eat me. One little proactive move and I get mauled…”
He didn’t realize that it was exactly because he so rarely took the lead that Fu Xici found it impossible to restrain himself.
The threat was gone. The path to university was open. And for the first time, Lu Yunchuan felt that as long as he had this “mountain” of a brother behind him, he truly didn’t have to fear anything in this world.
