Chapter 31: The Sky is Falling Big Brother Hugs Him From Behind
Even if Fu Xici were willing to take on the role of the “wife,” Lu Yunchuan wouldn’t dare commit such an act of “insubordination.”
At the moment, for him and Fu Xici to consider that final step was a bit premature; after all, he hadn’t actually planned on a long-term future with him.
Leaving a way out for both of them, Lu Yunchuan figured that Fu Xici wouldn’t do anything too extreme, if only to avoid affecting Lu Yunchuan’s grades.
For a long time now, the two of them hadn’t even kissed. He didn’t know how Fu Xici was holding back, but Lu Yunchuan himself didn’t feel a great need for it. Most of the time, Fu Xici initiated and he simply accepted; he had only taken the lead once, on Fu Xici’s birthday.
With a heavy psychological burden and little confidence in this relationship, he was passive in everything they did.
However, seeing Fu Xici every day gave him an inexplicable sense of security. He was dependent on Big Brother—not the dependence one has for a lover, but the dependence one has for family.
A person still needs love to live.
Having indulged Fu Xici for this half-year, their relationship was set to end this summer. He had some money saved up now, and with the red envelopes from his parents and grandparents during the New Year, he could finish university without any financial issues if he spent carefully. Even if he and Fu Xici had a falling out next year, he wouldn’t have to worry about tuition.
So, for these six months, he would love Fu Xici as much as he could. That way, when they eventually parted, he wouldn’t feel quite so guilty.
He always knew this was wrong. Since the path was incorrect, he had to turn back in time. If Fu Xici refused to turn back, then Lu Yunchuan would have to be the one to do it.
His current mode of coexistence with Fu Xici had become much more peaceful. He went to school and evening self-study, focusing on his books, while Big Brother went to work on time, running a company and staying busy around the clock.
As time passed, the atmosphere for the high school seniors grew increasingly tense. By the first mock exam of the new semester, Lu Yunchuan had seized the rank of number one in the entire grade, making his homeroom teacher, Ms. Liu, incredibly excited.
A top student means bonuses and professional titles. She watched Lu Yunchuan more closely than anyone else. She wasn’t blind to Huo Yanxiu’s feelings, and seeing him constantly seek out Lu Yunchuan, Ms. Liu called Huo Yanxiu in for a private talk.
In the faculty office, Ms. Liu spoke earnestly: “I don’t care how you two develop in the future, but for now, you cannot affect him. Your grades have improved a lot too, so I hope you can settle down and hold on until the college entrance exams are over. Once you’re in university, you can chase whoever you want, but not now.”
Huo Yanxiu smiled at her: “I haven’t been affecting him. Teacher, you’re too nervous.”
Liu Yifei’s palms were sweaty: “How can I not be nervous? I’m terrified something will go wrong. Just hold on for these last two or three months and don’t make me worry, okay?”
Huo Yanxiu nodded: “Fine. Regardless of where he goes, the alliance between our families can’t be pushed aside. He will inevitably be mine.”
Liu Yifei interrupted: “We’ll talk about that later. Not a word of it now—don’t disturb his focus.”
Lu Yunchuan’s transformation left all the teachers speechless. He was the daily topic of conversation in the staff room; everyone thought it was miraculous.
Fu Lingchuan saw all of this. He usually ignored Lu Yunchuan, but to find out which university he planned to apply to, Fu Lingchuan took the initiative to speak to him. Lu Yunchuan ignored him, leaving Fu Lingchuan to speculate: Was it Tsinghua or Peking University? With this momentum, he was definitely headed for a top-tier school.
Fu Lingchuan was resentful, but his grades couldn’t catch up. Having missed the first two years of high school, he was still lagging behind despite his hard work.
Before the college entrance exams, Lu Yunchuan’s documents had to undergo a political background check. Fu Lingchuan didn’t know this until he overheard his mother mentioning that Lu Yunchuan needed the household registration Hukou records for three generations of direct relatives.
Fu Kaijiang and Jiang Yueyue were discussing the issue.
Jiang Yueyue said, “I didn’t expect him to want to apply to a military academy. If he graduates as an officer and works in the military, our family will have a new layer of influence. As they say, one level of officialdom crushes those below. We are law-abiding business people; we really need this connection.”
Fu Kaijiang sat in the living room smoking, looking troubled. “Last year he had no ambition. It seems the blow we dealt him was indeed heavy. Who would have thought he’d become so successful now?”
Jiang Yueyue felt a bit lucky: “It’s a good thing we didn’t kick him out last year, otherwise this connection would be gone. Even if he has grievances against us, he should be grateful to Xici. For Xici’s sake, he won’t disown us in the future.”
Fu Kaijiang nodded: “Though he was a rascal before, he is a grateful person who values loyalty.”
Fu Lingchuan, having overheard this, walked over and asked what they were talking about.
Jiang Yueyue told him to sit: “We’re talking about your second brother. His registration needs a background check. Before the exam results come out, the check must be passed.”
Fu Lingchuan looked puzzled: “What school is he applying to that needs a background check?”
Jiang Yueyue made a shushing gesture: “This must be kept secret. If he really gets in, his Hukou will have to be moved out of the Fu family.”
“National University of Defense Technology?” Fu Lingchuan asked. To his knowledge, schools like Q or B weren’t that strict unless it was a military academy.
Jiang Yueyue whispered: “Something like that. Air Force Aviation University.”
Fu Lingchuan felt a pang of unease. He set his target a long time ago.
Fu Kaijiang sighed: “He’s quite capable. You never know someone’s potential until you push them. If Lingchuan hadn’t come home, our Second Young Master would have been ruined. It’s a double-edged sword.”
Fu Lingchuan forced a smile: “It seems it’s thanks to me then. Everyone is happy that Second Brother is so successful now.”
Jiang Yueyue said: “We only value utility. If he were a failure, there’s no way he’d stay in the Fu family. We only kept him because of the benefits he’ll bring in the future.”
Fu Lingchuan comforted her: “As a member of the Fu family, the family’s rise and fall are linked to him. He’ll naturally think of home.”
Jiang Yueyue took his hand and sighed: “You think too well of people. Do you think he stayed for ‘family affection’? After how we treated him, the only reason he could swallow his pride and stay is for profit. Without the Fu family, even going to school would be hard for him. He used the Eldest’s status to protect himself. Therefore, he must repay this debt to the family later.”
Fu Lingchuan patted his mother’s hand: “As he should. He can’t sever eighteen years of upbringing.”
He said this, but he thought otherwise. If this continued, his own status as the heir was under threat again. Fu Xici alone was enough to deal with, but if Lu Yunchuan became a military officer, things would become truly difficult for him.
Meanwhile, Lu Changgui had been trying to squeeze benefits out of the Fu family. But as a peasant with no power, he couldn’t outplay Fu Kaijiang, let alone take Lu Yunchuan away.
Fu Lingchuan eventually met with Lu Changgui in secret. Lu Changgui and Zhao Hui still hadn’t left the capital; they were looking for ways to get money from the Fu family but hadn’t found an opening.
Fu Lingchuan took his New Year allowance and pulled out a check for one million as a bargaining chip, telling Lu Changgui to sue for custody of Lu Yunchuan.
He told Lu Changgui: “Your biological son’s future path is extraordinary. Are you really willing to see him bring benefits to a family he has no relation to? You and the mother are so poor; you could rely on him to turn your lives around. He’s a top student now. If you don’t fight for custody now, it will only get harder.”
Lu Changgui originally wanted to curse at him, but Fu Lingchuan threw the check: “This is for your legal fees. If it’s not enough, I can give you more.”
Lu Changgui grinned, revealing yellow teeth: “Why so kind suddenly? Is he threatening your position? What, the elite family still doesn’t recognize you?”
Fu Lingchuan remained calm: “Not at all. The Fu family will definitely be mine. I just think you are pitiful. If you don’t fight now, he’ll never acknowledge you once he becomes successful.”
Lu Changgui looked at the check: “I’m not used to this kindness. What can one million do? I’ll consider it for another two million.”
Fu Lingchuan agreed immediately: “Find a lawyer first. You must make him recognize you before the college entrance exams. I will give you more money later.”
Lu Changgui nodded: “I’ve hated that family for a long time. Keeping my biological son from me… did they think I had no way to claim him back?”
Fu Lingchuan looked confident: “I’ll wait for good news. Don’t delay. If there’s no news by June, the money stops.”
Lu Changgui asked: “Why before June? What are you plotting?”
Fu Lingchuan spread his hands: “I’m just thinking of you both. If you don’t want to rely on your son later, you can delay. Consider this million your early retirement fund.”
For the background check, Lu Yunchuan didn’t dare make a single mistake. His Hukou was under Fu Kaijiang’s household. After Fu Lingchuan returned, a page had been added to include him.
Big Brother Fu Xici’s registration was independent; he had moved out and formed his own household around age twenty.
Because Lu Yunchuan had been switched at birth, there was no legal adoption document between him and the Fu couple; he had simply been raised as their biological son. Now, although a DNA test proved he wasn’t biologically theirs, he hadn’t been removed from their Hukou yet, and the Fus hadn’t issued an adoption certificate.
This meant that if his biological father sued, there was a chance to “reclaim” him.
Fu Kaijiang thought Lu Changgui had given up, but in April, as the background check loomed, Lu Changgui sued Fu Kaijiang. A court summons was delivered to the Fu villa.
The whole family was stunned. Jiang Yueyue cursed Lu Changgui as a “thug from the wilderness” looking for a payout and told Fu Kaijiang to just throw some money at him like a beggar.
But Lu Changgui refused. He knew the difference between a one-time payment and a lifelong reliance. The drama began anew.
Lu Yunchuan never thought a problem would arise at this critical juncture. With only a month until the exams, Lu Changgui suddenly interfered, demanding to recognize him and change his surname to Lu.
If he recognized Lu Changgui now, his background check would be a failure. Period. Lu Changgui had over ten criminal cases to his name, the most serious being an intentional injury charge in his youth that landed him in prison for three years—a major criminal record. His gambling debts were the least of his issues.
When Fu Kaijiang told Fu Xici about the lawsuit, Fu Xici clenched his fists in his office for a long time.
Fu Kaijiang messaged: Yunchuan is an adult. Custody doesn’t really exist; he has the right to decide for himself. Even if Lu Changgui wants him back, he needs Yunchuan’s consent. The difficulty is that your mother and I have no adoption papers. The swap happened at the hospital, and the hospital is now involved. They want to settle, but Lu Changgui refuses. He insists on reclaiming Yunchuan. Bring Yunchuan home; I want to ask his opinion.
Fu Xici looked at the messages with a dark gaze. His long fingers tightened into a fist until the joints turned white and cracked.
Lu Yunchuan had blocked most of the Fu family; only Fu Xici remained on his WeChat. He only spoke to his grandparents by phone. Thus, Lu Yunchuan didn’t know about this yet.
Fu Xici decided to act. He told Fu Kaijiang to send him Lu Changgui’s contact info: Push his WeChat to me. I’ll look into it.
Fu Xici added Lu Changgui. The verification message simply said: “Eldest Son of the Fu Family.”
Lu Changgui knew this man. He had seen him during his first visit to the Fu house, when the man had pulled Lu Yunchuan away.
Once the contact was added, Fu Xici messaged: Let’s meet. I have things to say in person. Yunchuan’s exams are coming; I don’t want you affecting him.
Lu Changgui was arrogant: Don’t think you can buy me off. I don’t want your pittance. No amount of money can replace my son. I just want my son. Don’t think you can bully people just because you’re rich. The law is fair.
Fu Xici’s grip nearly crushed his phone: Let’s meet. I have something to discuss. Yunchuan lives with me now; I handle everything. My father doesn’t know the full situation. You can ask me anything.
Lu Changgui: You’re his big brother? Isn’t guardianship with your father?
Fu Xici: It is, but he lives with me. I am effectively exercising guardianship.
Lu Changgui: Fine. I’ll bring my lawyer.
Fu Xici: Understood. Do you want to pick the place, or should I?
Lu Changgui: I’ll pick. As soon as possible.
Fu Xici: No problem. Tomorrow night. I have work during the day, but I’m free in the evening. Send me the location once you find it.
Lu Changgui: Don’t play tricks. And don’t be shameless, holding onto someone else’s son.
Fu Xici: He will be given to you.
Lu Yunchuan came home from late study around ten o’clock. He saw Big Brother sitting on the sofa messaging someone. Feeling hungry, he changed his shoes and went to the kitchen for milk, not wanting to disturb him.
“Brother, who are you chatting with?”
Fu Xici looked up. Lu Yunchuan took a sip of milk, his eyes curious. “Work is that busy?”
Fu Xici beckoned him: “Come here.”
Lu Yunchuan put his bag on the table and sat beside him. “What’s up?”
Fu Xici shook his head, just staring at his face. Lu Yunchuan felt uncomfortable and instinctively licked a trace of milk from his lip. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
Fu Xici smiled and shook his head. “Nothing.”
Lu Yunchuan threw the carton away and got up to shower. “Mock exams tomorrow morning. I need to sleep early. You shouldn’t stay up late either.”
As he walked away, Fu Xici suddenly grabbed his hand: “Sleep with me.”
Lu Yunchuan blinked, remained silent for a moment, and then agreed: “Fine. but you’re not allowed to bully me. I don’t want to take an exam with panda eyes.”
Fu Xici nodded: Okay
Lu Yunchuan finished showering and went straight to Fu Xici’s room. It was nearly summer, but it wasn’t warm yet, and the heating had been turned off.
Lu Yunchuan pulled the duvet, keeping a distance, and glanced at his brother. “Don’t do anything bad while I’m asleep.”
Fu Xici was also lying on his side, his gaze never leaving Lu Yunchuan’s face. Lu Yunchuan closed his eyes for a long time, but feeling the gaze still there, he opened them. They shared a silent moment.
Feeling tense under Fu Xici’s stare, he turned his back to his brother. Immediately, his brother hugged him from behind. Lu Yunchuan froze, not daring to move.
Fu Xici kissed the back of his neck twice: “Sleep.”
Lu Yunchuan took a deep breath. “Okay.”
He was terrified Big Brother would suddenly go crazy and keep him up half the night. But for the past few months, Big Brother hadn’t disturbed him, fearing it would affect his studies. Lu Yunchuan eventually fell asleep once the lights were out.
Fu Xici never told him what was happening. Lu Yunchuan was oblivious. Fu Lingchuan, seeing how calm Lu Yunchuan was, couldn’t understand it—how could this have no effect on him?
After the exams, during a break, Fu Lingchuan struck up a conversation: “Second Brother, did that person named Lu look for you?”
Lu Yunchuan wanted to ignore him, but hearing “the one named Lu,” he bristled like a cat. “Why would he look for me?”
Fu Lingchuan looked surprised: “You didn’t know? The house has been in an uproar because of you. Lu Changgui sued my parents; he wants you back.”
Lu Yunchuan’s heart skipped a beat. He felt as if the sky was falling. Why did Lu Changgui have to do this now?
His face turned pale, and cold sweat broke out on his forehead. If Lu Changgui won, all his hard work would be for nothing.
Seeing him so pale, Fu Lingchuan comforted him in a low voice: “Big Brother knows about this too. Didn’t he tell you?”
Lu Yunchuan: “…”
Fu Lingchuan said softly: “It’s fine. Even if you’re taken back, this family still loves you.”
Huo Yanxiu returned from the restroom and asked: “What happened?” Du Yunrui and Yang Lulu also gathered around, looking worried.
Fu Lingchuan smiled: “Congratulations to Second Brother for finding his biological parents. They came to my house.”
Huo Yanxiu shook the water off his hands: “Chuan’s biological parents? Who brought them here?”
Lu Yunchuan said nothing and walked out to call Fu Xici, but hung up immediately after it connected. He was too angry and confused to think straight. He messaged Big Brother instead: Lu Changgui sued Mom and Dad?
Fu Kaijiang Correction: The text says Fu Kaijiang replied, but based on context it should be Fu Xici replied after a moment: Who told you?
Lu Yunchuan: Fu Lingchuan.
Fu Xici: Yes, he sued. Don’t worry about it. Don’t let it affect you.
Lu Yunchuan: I’m scared…
Fu Xici: Don’t be. If the sky falls, I’ll hold it up for you.
Lu Yunchuan felt his efforts were being wasted. Those disgusting parents chose this exact time to mess with him. Why couldn’t they wait until his Hukou was independent?
He stood in the corridor looking at the jasmine flowers, lost. His phone vibrated again.
Fu Xici: Just keep moving forward. Leave the rest to me.
Lu Yunchuan took a deep breath. Fu Xici wasn’t his guardian, and Fu Kaijiang certainly wouldn’t fight for him. How could they stop Lu Changgui? He was utterly lost…
Around 8 PM, Fu Xici’s business car stopped in front of a small club.
The driver, Zhao Yu, opened the door: “President Fu, we’ve arrived.”
Fu Xici wore an overcoat over his suit. Two black-clad bodyguards followed him inside. Zhao Yu followed closely, acting as Fu Xici’s “translator,” and told the receptionist: “We have an appointment, Room 305.”
A waitress led them upstairs. The elevator was silent. Outside Room 305, she knocked. Lu Changgui opened the door and saw Fu Xici’s intimidating face.
He let Fu Xici in but refused entry to the bodyguards. He tried to stop Zhao Yu too, but Zhao Yu said: “I am President Fu’s lawyer. You brought a lawyer, and you won’t let President Fu bring his?”
Lu Changgui let him in.
Fu Xici sat on the sofa, his deep eyes scanning Lu Changgui from head to toe as if inspecting a piece of trash.
Lu Changgui was arrogant: “Don’t use your rich young master status to pressure me. I don’t buy it. My lawyer said I will 100% win the custody case for my son.”
Fu Xici crossed his long legs and typed what he wanted to say into his notes for Zhao Yu to relay.
Zhao Yu sat beside Fu Xici and asked: “Is there no other solution? President Fu is willing to give you a sum of money if you just wait until after the college entrance exams.”
Lu Changgui shook his head: “No, it must be now. Don’t try to stall me.”
Zhao Yu glanced at the security cameras in the room and smiled: “No room for negotiation?”
Lu Changgui looked triumphant: “None. I must have my son back.”
Zhao Yu looked at Fu Xici: “Then there’s no way. President Fu, let’s just accept it.”
Fu Xici closed his eyes and nodded: “Fine.”
Lu Changgui was stunned: “That easy?”
Zhao Yu smiled smoothly: “Our President Fu is very reasonable. You want to see the person involved, right? We’re going that way; we’ll take you to see him and ask his opinion.”
Lu Changgui did want to see Lu Yunchuan. After considering, he agreed. A few minutes later, he and his lawyer followed Fu Xici out.
They went downstairs and got into the car. Suddenly, the two bodyguards used wet cloths to cover the mouths and noses of Lu Changgui and his lawyer.
They struggled for two minutes, eyes wide with terror, before slowly losing consciousness.
Fu Xici sat in the front passenger seat, his expression calm and emotionless. He raised a hand in a “go” gesture.
Zhao Yu drove toward the outskirts: Truly, some people dare to cross President Fu. They have a death wish.
