Chapter 24: A Sense of Gloom Until Big Brother finally let go of his mouth fully satisfied
Lu Yunchuan was so anxious that the corners of his eyes were flushed red. If the Fu family discovered this, Fu Xici would likely be fine, but he Lu Yunchuan would certainly be torn to pieces.
Even though Jiang Wanyue had made it all the way to the apartment, Fu Xici ignored her completely. Lu Yunchuan felt like his heart was about to explode. His mother was right outside the door, yet inside, he and his big brother were kissing as if their lives depended on it.
His head spun, and his body began to tremble uncontrollably. After all, he had regarded Jiang Wanyue and Fu Kaijiang as his parents for eighteen years. Even if they didn’t like him now, they had raised him.
No matter how bold he was, he didn’t have the courage to fool around with Fu Xici right in front of them. He gripped Fu Xici’s hair, wanting to pull him away, but his strength wavered even then he was actually afraid of hurting him.
Fu Xici refused to let go. His heart hammered, and his blood surged; the man eight years his senior seemed to have no regard for the consequences.
My brother has gone a bit crazy, Lu Yunchuan thought.
Fu Xici held Lu Yunchuan’s face in both hands, his tongue moving with fierce intensity, tangling with his as if trying to merge their souls. He gave Lu Yunchuan no chance to escape. Perhaps because Lu Yunchuan had been avoiding him lately, Big Brother was profoundly dissatisfied.
Lu Yunchuan could only resign himself to fate, his hands settling on Fu Xici’s back, wrinkling the man’s crisp, clean shirt. Between gasps for air, his lips and tongue went numb. He wondered how people could kiss like this; in his imagination, teenage romance was careful and sweet, but Big Brother kissed like he wanted to devour him whole.
Is this what a mature, twenty-six-year-old bachelor is like?
Lu Yunchuan’s chest heaved until Fu Xici finally let go of his mouth, looking fully satiated. Dazed and oxygen-deprived, Lu Yunchuan gasped for air the moment he was freed.
Fu Xici’s usually pale lips were now swollen and red. Against his porcelain skin, he looked strikingly seductive and decadent. Lu Yunchuan blinked, looking up at his brother’s face. He had never seen Fu Xici with such an expression—his beautiful eyes were full of raw desire, completely stripped of his usual dignified authority.
Lu Yunchuan looked away quickly, not knowing where to put his gaze. The terrifying part was that while he mentally resisted, his body had given an honest response. Under Big Brother’s assault, he had reacted physically. It was an indisputable fact—one that left him feeling both ashamed and mortified.
Outside, Jiang Wanyue’s voice softened slightly: “I’m not demanding a specific result from you and Yunchuan. I just want to talk. You brothers can’t keep living like this. I need you to treat Lingchuan the same way you treat Yunchuan so your father and I can rest easy. Open the door.”
Fu Xici used his thumb to wipe a trace of moisture from the corner of Lu Yunchuan’s mouth, his gaze tender. After carefully cleaning him up, he smoothed Lu Yunchuan’s tousled hair, gave him a meaningful look, and turned to open the door for Jiang Wanyue.
Lu Yunchuan bolted for the bathroom to splash his face with cold water, desperate to hide his state before his mother noticed anything.
When the door opened, Jiang Wanyue entered with Butler Xu. Fu Xici remained perfectly composed. “Please, sit,” he gestured.
Jiang Wanyue glanced at the kitchen. “You’re cooking?”
“Yes,” Fu Xici replied tonelessly.
She walked over to see him kneading dough. She couldn’t bring herself to be too harsh with him; he was the eldest son, nearly thirty, and favored by the elders. She felt a lingering sense of guilt—for years, she had assumed his intelligence was impaired after his childhood head injury. But recently, Fu Kaijiang had told her that Fu Xici’s brain was fine; only his speech was slow.
She realized now that her son hadn’t been “slow” he had been playing the fool, deceiving the entire family. A man who never fought for anything had grown thorns all over his body just to protect this foster brother.
Fu Xici poured her a glass of water in silence and returned to the kitchen.
“Where is Yunchuan?” Jiang Wanyue asked.
Lu Yunchuan finally emerged from the bathroom, having steadied his emotions. “Mom, why are you here? Have you eaten?”
Despite her disapproval of him, Jiang Wanyue held back because of Fu Xici’s protection. She merely said coldly, “Why can’t you get along with Lingchuan? He’s from the countryside, he’s suffered and is sensitive. You and your brother should show him more care, not constant sarcasm.”
Lu Yunchuan didn’t know how to explain himself. Jiang Wanyue was clearly protecting Fu Lingchuan now. However, her tone suggested she no longer planned to kick him out immediately.
“As long as he doesn’t try to get rid of us, we can coexist,” Lu Yunchuan said. “Besides, I’m nobody in the Fu family now. It’s up to him if he can tolerate me.”
Jiang Wanyue’s face darkened. “Lingchuan cried for a long time, insisting on going back to the country because he didn’t want to cause trouble. You need to be more sensible. We raised you. Your big brother dotes on you, and we see that. We still consider you a son, so listen to us.”
Lu Yunchuan felt a pang of shame. Given what had just happened with Fu Xici, he felt he no longer had the right to call them parents. He scratched the back of his head awkwardly. “Don’t worry, Mom. After the exams next year, I’ll leave. Just let me stay for one more year.”
Jiang Wanyue sighed. “It’s not that we’re chasing you out, but your biological father came looking for you. Old Fu didn’t want you to leave. Since you’re working hard now, I won’t force you out. Just get along with Lingchuan, okay?”
“If it’s up to me, sure,” Lu Yunchuan muttered. “But the problem isn’t on my end.”
“Where else would it be?” Jiang Wanyue glared. “Lingchuan is timid and sensible. It breaks my heart to see him like that.”
Lu Yunchuan: “…” Right. You and your biological son are one heart. Big Brother and I are the problem.
Not wanting to argue, he turned toward the kitchen. “Brother, I’ll help you.”
“Sit down,” Jiang Wanyue commanded. “Don’t leave yet.”
Lu Yunchuan sat back down, offering a strained smile. “You don’t like listening to me anyway. I’ll go help Big Brother so he can come talk to you.”
“No need,” she said. “I’m talking to you. Did you hear what I said?”
“I heard you. I won’t look for trouble with him. And about Huo Yanxiu I really didn’t do anything. I don’t want to marry him. If Fu Lingchuan can’t win him over, that’s not my fault.”
Jiang Wanyue sighed. “But Yanxiu likes you. His mother has mentioned it many times. If all else fails, you two can just marry. You’d still be a Fu.”
“No!” Lu Yunchuan rejected it instantly. “I want to marry a wife in the future! I’m a man, I’m not ‘marrying out.’ How embarrassing…”
“So many people want Huo Yanxiu,” Jiang Wanyue countered. “Their estate is bigger than ours. You’d be better off there than fighting with three brothers here.”
“I’m not fighting anyone,” Lu Yunchuan shook his head. “I just want to get into university. Please, Mom, let me focus on that. Don’t let anything distract me.”
Jiang Wanyue was at a loss for words. “I thought you were a lost cause, but now you’re so driven I can’t even bring myself to scold you. At least you aren’t wasting your brother’s efforts to protect you.”
Lu Yunchuan flushed, looking away. “In my position, if I don’t work hard, I’ll be the laughingstock of the city. If for nothing else, I have to do it for my brother. He’s suffered a lot for me.”
Though I feel like he’s already collected his ‘repayment’ from my body, he thought privately.
Jiang Wanyue finally left after a final round of instructions, telling them to visit more often and not let the social circles gossip about their “broken” relationship.
After the door closed, Lu Yunchuan leaned against it, breathing heavily and clutching his chest. With Jiang Wanyue’s temper, if she knew what he and Fu Xici had been doing, she really would skin him alive.
Fu Xici finished the noodles and served Lu Yunchuan a massive portion in a metal basin.
The apartment fell into a heavy silence. Lu Yunchuan couldn’t look at Fu Xici normally anymore. He inhaled his noodles in ten minutes, washed the basin, and bolted to his room, locking the door from the inside.
Fu Xici didn’t bother him. Lu Yunchuan took a long time to calm down before opening his workbooks. He thought he was safe for the night, but at 10:00 PM, there was a knock on the door.
He froze, his heart racing. “Brother? Is something wrong?”
After a few seconds, Fu Xici’s voice came through, low and cold: “Open the door.”
Lu Yunchuan’s calm was shattered. What does he want in my room this late?!
Is he going to… do me?
I can’t open this door tonight. If I do, can I even protect myself?
He realized now that Big Brother was the most terrifying person of all. Usually so reserved and deep, but when facing him, he exuded such a powerful, “gloomy” intensity. It was scary.
Lu Yunchuan’s fingers trembled around his pen. Fu Xici didn’t move from the hallway; his dark shadow was visible under the door.
Not that! I’m not ready!
Lu Yunchuan covered his own mouth, his voice shaking: “Don’t even think about it! I’d rather die than submit… I treat you as a brother, but you… I’m never going to be the one on the bottom!”
Fu Xici seemed not to hear his protest. His voice was low and chilly, carrying an immense pressure: Open the door.
