Chapter 16: White Hyacinth What does it mean for Big Brother to give him flowers
Lu Yunchuan was truly stunned by Fu Xici’s skills. Although his brother’s movements were slow, his strategy for ambushing players was top-tier. Following his brother, Lu Yunchuan easily secured a victory. When they exited the game, Huo Yanxiu was already online, trying to pull him back into a match.
However, Fu Xici simply looked at him and pointed to his own cheek: “Kiss.
Lu Yunchuan found it hilarious, but not wanting to dampen his brother’s spirits, he leaned in and planted a kiss on Fu Xici’s cheek. “I didn’t realize you were actually this good, Brother. Does this mean you’re not actually… ‘slow’?”
The corners of Fu Xici’s lips curled up, and he raised an eyebrow slightly as if to ask: What do you think?
It turned out that in his previous life, Big Brother had been playing the fool. Lu Yunchuan had genuinely thought he was mentally impaired. Realizing this, he felt a pang of guilt—after middle school, he had avoided Fu Xici and kept his distance, which must have broken his brother’s heart. Yet, despite that, Big Brother was the one who had claimed his ashes in the end without a single word of resentment.
Big Brother would always be Big Brother. An eight-year age gap meant a level of magnanimity and tolerance that ordinary people couldn’t fathom.
He took a trip to the old family estate. His grandparents’ attitude toward him remained unchanged, showing no coldness despite Fu Lingchuan’s return. Lu Yunchuan had been afraid they wouldn’t want him anymore, but instead, they gave him a thick red envelope, telling him that if he ever lacked money, he could always come to them.
Feeling a mix of bitterness and warmth, Lu Yunchuan stayed there with Fu Xici for two days.
In the following days, the wait for the exam results began. His job at the milk tea shop ended as they didn’t need a temporary worker anymore, and he was paid for his few days of labor. Huo Yanxiu hounded him to play games every day, but Lu Yunchuan had no heart for it; he was too worried about his future. Only when Big Brother came home each evening would he play for a short while to relax.
On June 25th, the Gaokao results were released. A text message was sent to every student’s phone. With a trembling heart, Lu Yunchuan checked his score: he had exactly crossed the Second-Tier university line.
The faces of those in the Fu family waiting for him to fail turned green—especially Fu Lingchuan. He couldn’t understand how a useless thug could reach the Second-Tier line with only one month of cramming. If Lu Yunchuan really “soared to the sky” next year and regained favor, wouldn’t his own status as the “True Young Master” be threatened?
He could not allow Lu Yunchuan to stay.
Fu Lingchuan immediately contacted Lu Yunchuan’s biological parents in secret. He remembered his foster father’s number. He had never intended to contact those poor people again after escaping that destitute home, but Lu Yunchuan had become a threat.
While Fu Kaijiang’s expression softened upon seeing the grades, Fu Lingchuan went into the private garden and dialed the number that had always disgusted him.
He asked Lu Changgui, “Don’t you want your son anymore? He did very well on his exams; he’s likely going to a good university. The Fu family likes him a lot. Don’t you want to find him?”
Lu Changgui’s speech was foul. “You little brat! Your mother and I struggled to raise you, and you haven’t given us a cent in return!”
Fu Lingchuan was used to the verbal abuse. “Don’t look for me. Go find your biological son. You can’t let him enjoy a life of luxury in a mansion while you two suffer, can you? You sell a few chickens a year for pennies, while your real son wears watches worth millions. Doesn’t that bother you?”
Lu Changgui grew angrier the more he listened. “Think you’re special now that you’re a rich young master? You want to mock me because your biological parents are rich and we’re poor?”
Fu Lingchuan didn’t want to waste time. “A fake is always a fake. If you take him away now, my parents might give him a payout—maybe a few million. If he finishes university first, he’ll definitely never acknowledge you.”
He hung up and immediately blacklisted the number.
Lu Yunchuan secured his “repeat” spot at Dewei High School. Seeing his diligence, Fu Kaijiang felt relieved. He told Lu Yunchuan that if he could make the First-Tier university line next year, he would fund any tuition, no matter how expensive, and reward him with a house.
Lu Yunchuan had finally used his grades to win back some ground in Fu Kaijiang’s heart. Despite the previous coldness, he felt genuinely happy. He promised his father he would excel next year; his target was the Air Force Aviation University.
Meanwhile, Jiang Wanyue was still at her parents’ house. Fu Yunzhou had joined her. The Fu couple was currently in a stalemate over a potential divorce—Jiang Wanyue refused to return unless Lu Yunchuan was kicked out. Fu Kaijiang refused to budge, so she stayed away.
Even though Fu Kaijiang allowed him to stay, Lu Yunchuan continued living in the school district apartment with Big Brother.
After the results came out, he knocked on his neighbor’s door. Qian Shuhao opened it. “Why are you here?” the top student asked in surprise.
Lu Yunchuan pointed to the new digital lock across the hall. “I’m living here this year. The results are out; you must have checked yours?”
Qian Shuhao invited him in. “My parents are at work. Come in.”
Lu Yunchuan looked around. The table near the TV was covered in awards. “Is this what a ‘good student’s’ home looks like? So many certificates.”
Qian Shuhao poured him a glass of water. “Did you check your score?”
Lu Yunchuan nodded. “I did. It’s exactly what you estimated. I crossed the Second-Tier line, but I’m repeating a year to go higher. What about you?”
Qian Shuhao’s expression was neutral. “I did alright. Before the scores were even public, B-University and Q-University both called me. The result was ideal: 742 points.”
Lu Yunchuan:
Called that ‘ideal’? Qian Shuhao was undoubtedly the top science student in the province. Lu Yunchuan gave him a thumbs up. “You’re a beast. How is your brain wired? Do you have an extra lobe or something?”
Qian Shuhao shook his head. “I just put in a bit more effort. You reached the Second-Tier line in a month; you’re probably smarter than I am.”
“Don’t flatter me,” Lu Yunchuan waved him off. “So, which one are you choosing?”
“B-University,” Qian Shuhao answered without hesitation. “Their math department is number one in Asia. I plan to go into research.”
Lu Yunchuan was in awe. “With people like you building the country, I can slack off in peace.”
“You can succeed too,” Qian Shuhao said. “What’s your goal?”
“Air Force Aviation University. I want to fly fighter jets.”
Qian Shuhao nodded. “That’s a great goal. It’s a top-tier academy. You’ll graduate as an officer. I’ll wait for your good news next year.”
Later that night, Big Brother came home with a gift. Lu Yunchuan, seeing the time, logged out of his game and pretended to be reviewing his lessons.
Fu Xici entered at his usual 6:30 PM. Lu Yunchuan walked out of the study to greet him, only to find Big Brother holding a bouquet of flowers. They were White Hyacinths clusters of bright white blooms wrapped in striking red paper.
Lu Yunchuan blinked. “Why did you buy flowers?”
Fu Xici swapped his shoes for slippers, walked over, and handed the bouquet to him. “For you.”
Though confused, Lu Yunchuan accepted them with a smile. “Thanks, Brother. They’re beautiful.”
A few minutes later, he posted a photo of the flowers on his WeChat Moments. Huo Yanxiu was the first to comment.
Rich Brat: WTF?! Who the hell beat me to the punch? They gave you White Hyacinths?!
Lu Yunchuan replied with a “?”.
Huo Yanxiu replied instantly: Don’t you know the flower language for those is ‘Secret Love’ and ‘Silent Affection’? You dare accept flowers from just anyone?! Throw them away right now!
