The Tragic Heroine Fell in Love with Me - Chapter 56
Mond Helge lay on the floor like a dead fish, watching Xiao San tend to Zheng Qi’s wounds. Even though he was more severely injured, not only did he receive no concern, but he was also scolded.
Mond Helge closed his eyes.
Mond Helge stared with his deeply sunken, light-colored Western eyes. He sat across the coffee table like a mixed-breed dog with the appearance of a golden retriever but the eyes of a husky.
The living room was in such disarray that it looked as if an earthquake had just struck. He had to clear a spot with his hands just to kneel, watching as Zheng Qi and Xiao San sat opposite him, interrogating him.
“So, how did you find out my address?” Xiao San had never told Mond Helge her address, nor had she even agreed to let him come to her home.
Mond Helge: “I have my ways.”
“Don’t speak in riddles. Explain clearly.” Xiao San slapped the coffee table with great force, making a loud noise.
“Before I went on the run, I already knew your address. Because you’re the only person I know who has absolutely nothing to do with the internal strife of the Helge family,” Mond Helge said quickly.
Zheng Qi let out a scornful laugh.
“What are you laughing at? Are you mocking me?” Mond Helge roared at Zheng Qi.
“You’re in my house, and you dare yell at Ah Qi!” Xiao San immediately defended Zheng Qi.
Mond Helge scrutinized Zheng Qi carefully. “So this is that woman from back then.”
“What do you mean ‘that woman’? Show some respect.” Xiao San couldn’t stand anyone treating Zheng Qi poorly.
Mond Helge said, “Dear Xiao San, you don’t know, it was her who deliberately sowed discord between you and Shen Lin. Shen Lin really liked you!”
“Hey, hey, hey, I’ve been meaning to tell you even though your Mandarin has improved a lot, your use of idioms is terrible. Maybe you should just stop using idioms from now on.” Xiao San rolled her eyes, completely exasperated with Mond. “Look at the idioms you used, they’re a complete mess.”
Mond Helge wanted to explain, but Xiao San had no intention of listening.
“Since you’re here, rest well tonight. Tomorrow, you must find your own place to stay.” Xiao San laid down the ultimatum. “Also, you have to compensate me for all the damaged items in the room at their original price!”
After all, he was some kind of noble surely he had plenty of money.
“Ah!” Mond Helge suddenly kowtowed heavily. When he lifted his head again, his eyes were brimming with tears. “Although I’d love to compensate you, my family is in complete chaos right now. I really have no money. Once I have the money, I’ll pay you back immediately.”
“Aren’t you a noble? Don’t you have any savings of your own?” Xiao San asked.
“No.”
Xiao San slapped her forehead, feeling as though she had invited some kind of huge trouble. No, not “as though” she had definitely invited huge trouble.
“A’Qi.” Xiao San looked at Zheng Qi pitifully. “Ah Qi, you!”
Zheng Qi glanced at Mond Helge. “Let’s talk in the room.”
Xiao San nodded emphatically. “Mm-hmm.”
Their private conversation definitely couldn’t be overheard by Mond Helge.
As Xiao San and Zheng Qi stood up and headed into the room, Xiao San suddenly turned back to look at Mond Helge, who seemed to have let out a sigh of relief, his face showing a look of unburdened ease. “No eavesdropping,” she said, “and clean up the living room, or I’ll kick you out.”
Once inside the room, Xiao San immediately began fawning over Zheng Qi, massaging her shoulders. “Ah Qi, you’re not angry, are you?”
“Why would I be angry? It’s not like you invited him here.”
“Even though I didn’t invite him, this whole situation is still because of me,” Xiao San said, carefully avoiding the area where Zheng Qi had just been injured. “I was planning to tell you during the day, but I didn’t expect Mond to come so quickly, and on top of that, he ended up hurting you.”
Zheng Qi sighed, took Xiao San’s hand, and turned to face her. “You never have to apologize to me. No matter what you do, I’ll always support you. There’s just one thing.”
Zheng Qi’s palm was incredibly rough. While people who often do farm work or manual labor might have rough fingers or fingertips, it was unusual for the palm itself to feel as coarse as if it had been cut by a blade.
Xiao San held Zheng Qi’s hand and turned it over to examine her palm.
There, she saw numerous deep scars, as if from knife wounds. The cuts had been so deep that they hadn’t healed properly, leaving behind a series of rough, raised marks. The coarse texture came from these scars.
“What is it?” Xiao San asked, barely registering Zheng Qi’s words, her mind preoccupied with the sight before her.
She couldn’t help but wonder what Zheng Qi had been through. Were these wounds from the time she had disappeared? In just two years, how could she have accumulated so many scars? Zheng Qi had been hiding them all along. If Xiao San hadn’t noticed the roughness and insisted on looking, would Zheng Qi have ever told her?
“I don’t want you to get caught up in danger. Who knows what’s going on with Mond’s family? You’re treating him like a friend without any caution. What if you get dragged into something because of him?” Zheng Qi looked at Xiao San gently, as if the scars on her palm didn’t exist.
“But we’re in the country now, it should be fine, right? It’s only abroad that things seem so chaotic.”
Zheng Qi replied, “That may be true, but look, he sneaked in here without permission. Who knows if he’s really a good person? What if something really happens.”
“But I have you with me,” Xiao San said, hugging Zheng Qi tightly. All she could do was hold her. As for these scars, she believed that when Zheng Qi was ready, she would tell her everything.
Xiao San held onto that belief firmly.
“It seems like you’re not the least bit scared in hindsight.”
“Of course I’m scared, but with you here, Ah Qi, I’m not afraid of anything.”
Xiao San chuckled and nuzzled against Zheng Qi.
It wasn’t that she wasn’t afraid, it was just that, although Mond Helge’s mouth was a bit annoying, she didn’t think he was a bad person.
“At least be a little more cautious,” Zheng Qi urged again.
“Mond isn’t a bad guy. We’ve known him before, after all. With anyone else, I’d definitely be more careful.”
Zheng Qi didn’t know how else to persuade Xiao San. After all, she didn’t want Xiao San to lose her kind-hearted nature.
“Go back to sleep and lock your door,” Zheng Qi said, patting Xiao San gently.
Xiao San shook her head. “No, I’m a bit scared. I want you to sleep with me.”
Without waiting for Zheng Qi to respond, Xiao San climbed onto her bed. Since there were two pillows on Zheng Qi’s bed, Xiao San naturally occupied one of them, hugging it and patting it. “Ah Qi, come to bed quickly.”
Zheng Qi suddenly froze. She turned her head slowly, looking at the oblivious Xiao San. “Do you even know what you’re doing?”
“Huh?”
Zheng Qi smiled helplessly. “Of course you don’t.”
Her voice was so soft that Xiao San couldn’t make out what she was saying, but her expression was clear enough for Xiao San to understand that Zheng Qi was indulging her.
“Ah Qi, let’s sleep.”
Zheng Qi walked to the door and closed it. “Sleep. I’ll settle things with you tomorrow.”
Xiao San lay on the bed, closed her eyes, completely unafraid of any reckoning.
Of course, the one who should be afraid was Mond Hegel.
Only after Zheng Qi and Xiao San had returned to their room did a trace of fear finally show on Mond Hegel’s face.
What kind of background did this woman named Zheng Qi have? If Xiao San had come out a few minutes later, he might have been dead.
Was this the legendary mysterious power of the East? Do all Easterners know martial arts?
Mond Hegel had no choice but to curl up awkwardly on the sofa and make do for the night.
He could only hope that Xiao San wouldn’t really kick him out.
He truly had nowhere else to go. His political faction was nearly wiped out, and if his family hadn’t pulled strings to send him to this country where he had once visited, he would likely have been killed too.
“Ah Qi and I have discussed it. You can stay here for now, but once things settle down with your family, you have to leave,” Xiao San said sternly to Mond Hegel.
Mond Hegel was immensely grateful. “For your great kindness, I must repay you with my life.”
Xiao San quickly waved her hands. “That won’t be necessary. I don’t need that kind of repayment.”
She pointed at the broken items in the living room. “You’ll have to compensate me for these once you have money.”
“Of course. From now on, my money is your money.”
“Alright then, you can stay for now. Since Ah Qi and I have to work, you’ll have to handle lunch on your own. And since you don’t have any money, don’t even think about ordering takeout just cook for yourself.” After saying this, Xiao San asked worriedly, “You know how to cook, right?”
Mond Hegel replied, “I do.”
“That’s good.”
As it turned out, Xiao San had been too optimistic.
Although Mond Hegel knew how to cook, he was, after all, a Westerner, and the kitchenware in the East was quite different from what he was used to. The moment Xiao San left, he struggled not just with cooking but even with turning on the stove. He had to resort to scavenging the fridge for ready-to-eat food, and by the end of the day, he was utterly famished.
When Xiao San returned, he immediately threw himself at her feet. “If possible, please let me go to work with you every day.”
After a day of boredom, he felt like he was rusting away.
Being hungry was one thing, but if he had something else to occupy his time, it might have been bearable. In reality, aside from not being able to eat properly, he couldn’t do anything else.
The television had already been smashed, and he didn’t have a phone. Even if he wanted to read a book, the pages were filled with square characters, and he couldn’t recognize a single one.
Xiao San finally managed to pry Mond Helge off of him, he had nearly become a permanent attachment to her leg. “Hey, you’re supposed to be a noble. Could you at least act with a little more sense?”
The Mond Helge she had known before wasn’t like this.
“I’m just a rich second-generation heir. I don’t have to inherit the family business. All I need to do is eat, drink, and enjoy life. Who knew the internal family conflicts would drag me into this mess?”
Mond Helge was crying so pitifully that even Xiao San started to feel her earlier words had been too harsh.
“Alright, alright. I’ll make you something to eat, okay? Stop crying your sobbing is giving me a headache.” As Xiao San spoke, she opened the refrigerator. It was fine until she looked inside, but what she saw shocked her.
Every edible item in the fridge was gone. Not only did the living room look like it had been ransacked, but the refrigerator had been cleaned out as well.
“You ate everything, and you’re still hungry?”
This foreigner was way too hard to take care of. And he had the nerve to cry? That fridge had contained a week’s worth of food for her and A Qi.
Mond Helge looked at Xiao San with pitiful eyes. “I just eat a little more than most.”
“You don’t even do anything, how can you eat so much?” Xiao San sighed in defeat as she stared into the empty fridge. “Forget it, I’ll just order takeout.”
While saying she would order takeout, Xiao San sent a message to Zheng Qi, asking what she wanted to eat.
