The Tragic Heroine Fell in Love with Me - Chapter 27
Zhang Rongrong turned her head from afar, “Hey, if you’re going to talk behind my back, at least do it when I’m not around. I can clearly hear you.”
Xiao San playfully blinked, “You could always pretend you didn’t hear.”
“Hey, boss, you guys are way too much. Have some consideration for a newcomer, will you?”
Ge Weizhong shook his head and smiled, “From now on, we’ll have to be more discreet when talking about her behind her back. Getting caught really isn’t ideal.”
Zhang Rongrong shouted loudly, “Hey!”
Since they hadn’t made a reservation in advance, Ge Weizhong had to settle for a relatively large hotpot restaurant nearby, which was packed to the brim, filling every seat in the place.
“Boss, what are you canceling?” Ge Weizhong was standing at the entrance, canceling a reservation on his phone, when his subordinate Niu Limin happened to walk by and accidentally caught a glimpse. “If you have plans, just go ahead. We’ll be fine here.”
Niu Limin said, thinking he was being considerate.
Ge Weizhong glanced inside the restaurant, then lowered his head with a bitter smile, “The other person had something come up and couldn’t make it.”
Niu Limin patted Ge Weizhong on the shoulder, “Poor boss, it’s alright. Even if you got dumped, it’s no big deal. I’ll be here to keep you company.”
Ge Weizhong immediately shook him off, “I never knew you had such intentions toward me.”
Niu Limin laughed and leaned closer to Ge Weizhong. As the two were fooling around, Xiao San came out from inside, “Weizhong, everyone’s waiting for you to open the drinks.”
Ge Weizhong pointed at Xiao San, half-jokingly and half-seriously, “See? This is the kind of person I like. Someone like you, tsk tsk, better keep your distance.”
Niu Limin put on a heartbroken expression, “Ah, poor me, so deeply in love, yet I can’t even earn a single glance from you.”
Xiao San joined in the laughter.
“Weizhong? Didn’t expect to run into you here.” While they were joking around, they hadn’t noticed a few people approaching from a distance. One of them was Ye Ding, who had given Xiao San trouble earlier in the day.
Ye Ding was very happy to see Ge Weizhong and quickly strode over, bypassing the others. Behind him were a few men in suits, likely also from Yangyun Trading.
Xiao San looked at Ye Ding in confusion, then at Ge Weizhong, whose smile had suddenly frozen. The two of them seemed very familiar with each other.
Ye Ding hadn’t noticed Xiao San. He walked over and half-pulled Ge Weizhong by the arm, “Come on, it’s been a while since we last met. Let’s grab a drink with the guys?”
It didn’t sound like a question, as he was already pulling Ge Weizhong in that direction as he spoke.
Ge Weizhong quickly pushed Ye Ding away, his gaze darting toward Xiao San once more before he quickly looked back, trying to hide his cautious observation. “I have something to attend to. I’m having a gathering with my team right now.”
“Come on, let them have their gathering. You just need to pay the bill. Besides, with you here, they probably don’t feel entirely at ease anyway. Why not let us go eat and let them enjoy themselves freely?”
Niu Liming, who didn’t particularly like Ye Ding either, pretended to be invisible and stayed silent on the side.
Xiao San tried her best to act as if she weren’t there.
Unable to refuse, Ge Weizhong reluctantly nodded, “Amin, you guys go ahead back first. I’ll join you after a while over there.”
“What meeting? Don’t bother coming back. I’ll put the meal on my tab and have someone settle it later. Order whatever you want Zhong’s subordinates are my subordinates too,” Ye Ding said generously, pulling Ge Weizhong along as he made to leave.
Ge Weizhong hesitated, half-resisting and half-yielding.
Just then, Ye Ding finally noticed Xiao San in the corner.
“Hey, isn’t that…”
Now it was Ge Weizhong’s turn to panic. He quickly tugged at Ye Ding, urging him to leave. “Alright, alright, didn’t you say we were leaving? Hurry up.”
Once they were gone, Xiao San finally let out a sigh of relief.
Xiao San remarked, “They seem really close.”
Niu Limin had no idea about Xiao San’s earlier encounter with Ye Ding. “He’s just a useless guy. He only got the title of general manager because his uncle is the son-in-law of Yangyun Trading. In reality, he’s nothing. Don’t tell me you’ve taken a liking to him.”
“Hey, Niu Limin!”
“Call me Amin. ‘Niu Limin’ sounds so tacky,” Niu Limin said with a pained expression. “I was just joking, seriously. Please don’t call me by my full name, it gives me goosebumps.”
Xiao San snorted. “If you keep making jokes that annoy me.”
“Alright, alright, my dear sister. I’m just being cautious. Everyone knows beautiful women often have terrible taste. I was worried you’d be like those ordinary beauties with poor judgment.”
“Hmph.” Xiao San reluctantly nodded, signaling he could continue.
“I just didn’t expect my dear Xiao San to not only be a stunning beauty but also have great taste, right? Don’t be mad. Come on, let’s go grab a drink.” Niu Limin nudged Xiao San, steering her into the hotpot restaurant.
Inside, Niu Limin briefly explained the situation, riling up everyone’s excitement. Soon, the hotpot restaurant was filled with cheerful laughter.
Xiao San had considered the possibility that Ge Weizhong and Ye Ding knew each other, but she hadn’t expected them to be so close.
So why would Ye Ding come to trouble her?
As she pondered, a message popped up on her phone from Ge Weizhong.
[It’s not what you think. Don’t worry, I won’t harm you.]
[I’ll explain about Ye Ding later.]
Xiao San irritably flipped her phone over.
She had a feeling the whole situation was ridiculously messy and didn’t really want to know more.
Just as Xiao San had anticipated, the reason was indeed complicated but that’s a story for later. The immediate issue was that Xiao San couldn’t find a job.
Previously, she had aimed for a computer-related position but was held back by her major, so she hadn’t found a suitable job. Xiao San had been taking on temporary work while studying on the side.
But suddenly, all her temporary jobs fell through even the relatively stable ones like working in a restaurant kitchen or as a supermarket cashier completely disappeared.
Xiao San vaguely suspected it had something to do with Ye Ding but had no concrete evidence.
Unwilling to trouble Ge Weizhong constantly and with the class reunion approaching, Xiao San decided to wait until after the gathering to look for work again, taking a few days off in the meantime.
Unexpectedly, after a trip to the supermarket, she ran into Ye Ding and an unfamiliar girl as soon as she stepped out.
Although Ye Ding wasn’t much of a person, his looks were passable probably around a five or six out of ten. Add in his sense of style and height advantage, and overall, he could be considered handsome.
The girl beside him bore a slight resemblance to him about two or three points’ worth. If they weren’t siblings, they must have that “couple look.” Honestly, they seemed quite harmonious together.
Xiao San, being a sucker for good looks, mentally rated them a few points in her mind. But in the blink of an eye, they were about to pass each other by.
“Wait a moment,” the girl said.
Ye Ding turned around, about to ask what was going on, when his voice abruptly cut off. Clearly, he had spotted Xiao San too.
Xiao San felt as if needles were pricking her back, her desire to escape overwhelming. Unfortunately, Ye Ding immediately blocked her path.
“General Manager Ye, what a coincidence! You’re here shopping at the supermarket too?”
Ye Ding let out a cold, mocking snort, and the girl did the same.
Hey, you two, don’t be so ridiculous.
Xiao San lowered her head, pretending she hadn’t noticed.
“You’re still here?” Ye Ding’s tone was filled with mockery and disdain.
From his tone, Xiao San was absolutely certain that the one causing trouble behind the scenes and affecting her work was none other than the person in front of her.
Xiao San’s lips twitched. She forced a smile, stiff and obvious. “General Manager Ye, I’m not quite sure what you mean. I have things to do, so I’ll be going now.”
Xiao San, you’re such a coward, you don’t even dare to confront him. I look down on you!
Xiao San wept silently inside, but on the surface, she showed no intention of questioning him.
She knew that even if she asked, it wouldn’t solve the problem. It would be better to go back and call Senior Weizhong to clarify what was really going on.
“Then let me make it clearer,” Ye Ding pointed at Xiao San’s shoulder. “You’d better stay away from Weizhong. Otherwise, you’ll regret it.”
Xiao San secretly rolled her eyes.
It was pretty much what she had suspected.
Senior Weizhong, who should have explained things to her, hadn’t said a word.
Ye Ding, who shouldn’t have bothered with her, had the audacity to outright state his intentions.
Xiao San didn’t want to play dumb. She just wanted to clear up any misunderstandings. “Senior Weizhong and I oh, I mean, Ge Weizhong really have nothing between us. We’re just university seniors and juniors. He’s a nice person, so he looks out for me.”
“Just because he’s kind-hearted, you cling to him, hoping to climb up and become a phoenix, right?” Ye Ding wore an expression that said, “I see right through you.” “But you need to understand your place. Do you really think you’re worthy of Weizhong?”
Xiao San forced another dry laugh. What should she do? She was about to lose her patience.
“Of course, I understand. General Manager Ye, you really don’t need to worry. I truly have no feelings whatsoever for Ge Weizhong.”
After saying this, Xiao San prepared to make her escape.
“Wait,” the girl spoke up again.
Xiao San had no choice but to stop, mainly because Ye Ding once again blocked her path.
What’s wrong with these two? Why do they have to keep harassing her?
She just wanted to be an ordinary NPC and avoid trouble.
Xiao San turned around. “Miss, is there something you need?”
She tried her best to keep her tone from sounding sarcastic.
“How do we know if you’re telling the truth? You need to message Weizhong right now and say you’ll never see him again.”
“Huh?” Xiao San’s face twisted in disbelief. This was going too far.
She just didn’t want to cause trouble, but that didn’t mean she was a pushover. Asking her to do such a thing would practically force her to cut ties with Ge Weizhong completely. Why should she? She and Ge Weizhong had a normal senior-junior relationship and had always gotten along quite well. Why should she sever ties over a stranger?
“If you don’t dare to send it, it means you have feelings for Brother Weizhong!” The girl pointed at Xiao San, her expression full of certainty.
