The Tragic Heroine Fell in Love with Me - Chapter 26
General Manager Ye Ding straightened his clothes, raised his hand, and flicked his middle finger against his shoulder a few times. He let out a cold laugh and swept a contemptuous glance over Xiao San.
“You’re somewhat interesting,” he said, tilting his chin upward. “Push the chairs together in pairs, leaving a few aisles in between.”
“General Manager Ye, although I’d like to follow your instructions, the event is about to begin, and the chair arrangement was finalized long ago. If you really wish to change the layout, perhaps we could go through the proper procedure for modifications?”
“Modifications? What modifications? Don’t you know I’m in charge here?” Ye Ding snapped angrily. “I think you’re deliberately stalling. What, do I need your supervisor to come over before you’ll listen to me?”
Xiao San continued to smile. “The event is starting soon. If we change the layout now, it might disrupt the proceedings. I’m sure General Manager Ye wouldn’t want the entire event affected over a few chairs.”
Ye Ding sneered. After a momentary pause, he continued, “Since you know it could affect the event, why aren’t you moving faster? Do you have to wait until the last minute?” He looked Xiao San up and down. “Having connections really makes a difference, huh? You won’t even listen to the client. Who gets to decide whether the chairs affect the event, you or me?”
If Xiao San hadn’t realized by now that Ye Ding was deliberately targeting her, she would have been a fool.
She discreetly scanned the people around her but couldn’t pinpoint who might have provoked this.
Besides, now wasn’t the time to figure out who was truly behind this harassment.
“General Manager Ye naturally carries more weight than a junior employee like me. If you insist, please sign this document.” Xiao San smiled, pulling a blank sheet of paper from her pocket. She quickly wrote down that General Manager Ye had requested a change in the chair layout and pointed to the bottom. “If you could sign here, General Manager Ye, it would help me account for the change later.”
Ye Ding looked at the paper and pen with disgust. The moment Xiao San handed them over, he tore the paper to shreds and threw it on the ground.
“What’s going on here?” The actual person in charge of the venue approached.
Ye Ding flinched slightly but quickly straightened his posture. “Nothing. This young lady was littering, and I was just reminding her to clean up.”
The supervisor turned his gaze to Xiao San. “Is that true?”
Xiao San nodded. “Thank you for the reminder, General Manager Ye. I’ll clean up the litter right away.”
Without giving Ye Ding a chance to respond, Xiao San turned and went to fetch a broom.
As soon as Xiao San stepped away, another temporary worker, a young woman, quietly approached her. “Xiao San, you’re in trouble.”
“In trouble?”
“You’ve offended Ye the Skinflint.” Zhang Rongrong glanced around cautiously before continuing, “That’s Ye Ding. He’s the brother-in-law of a major shareholder at Yangyun Trading. He has connections. If you’ve crossed him, you won’t be able to keep this job.”
“Thank you for the warning,” Xiao San replied, recognizing that Zhang Rongrong had come specifically to alert her. “I didn’t mean to provoke him. Besides, this is just a temporary job. Once today is over and he doesn’t see me again, it should blow over.”
Zhang Rongrong shook her head. “You’re thinking too simply. He’s notoriously petty-minded. The last person who offended him was directly driven out of this city.”
“Huh?” Xiao San was genuinely puzzled. “It can’t be that bad.”
“That’s why everyone calls him Ye the Skinflint. You should apologize to him later, or else he’ll definitely use every means to deal with you.” Zhang Rongrong shook her head sympathetically at Xiao San. “Although I also think it shouldn’t be that extreme, he just think of him in the worst possible way.”
Xiao San rubbed her temples but still picked up the broom and went over.
She felt Zhang Rongrong’s words were a bit alarmist, but then she remembered this was a novel world, art comes from life but surpasses it so anything could happen.
How unlucky. Who exactly was trying to harm her?
After finishing cleaning, Xiao San returned the broom.
For the remaining time, she didn’t speak to anyone else. She suspected that the person who deliberately brought Ye Ding to trouble her was among this group.
With such great ability, why couldn’t they do something else instead of bullying her?
Just as she was lost in thought, her phone vibrated a few times.
[Did Ye Ding give you trouble?]
Xiao San looked at Senior Ge Weizhong’s text in confusion, quietly typing a reply with one hand.
[Yes, how did you know?]
Ge Weizhong: [Alright, don’t worry about this. I’ll handle it.]
Xiao San keenly sensed that Ye Ding’s harassment might be related to Ge Weizhong.
Senior, could it be…
Xiao San held down the delete button again, erasing all the words she had typed, and replied with: [Okay, got it.]
The event began.
Several expensive cars parked on the outskirts of the activity area. Rumor had it that some foreign noble was attending this time. Yangyun Trading attached great importance to this event, which was why they had asked Senior Ge Weizhong to plan it.
Ye Ding, who had been glaring coldly at Xiao San earlier, was now beaming with an ingratiating smile. If it weren’t for the presence of Yangyun Trading’s chairman and other shareholders, he would probably have rushed to the front already.
Xiao San curled her lip in disdain. She detested people who were arrogant to the weak but obsequious to the strong.
The cars stopped, and several bodyguards in black suits emerged from the passenger and rear seats. Each wore sunglasses, looking utterly unapproachable.
After getting out, they surrounded a black car. One of them opened the rear door, a white-gloved hand shielding the doorframe as he bowed, waiting for the occupant to step out.
Xiao San had seen nobility before.
Like Mond Herg.
After Aqi left, the exchange students gradually departed too. Mond Herg, who used to hover around her constantly, had vanished without a trace since leaving.
This noble had an even grander presence than Mond Herg.
Xiao San watched the car door calmly. From her distance, the figure appeared no larger than a palm, making it impossible to discern the person’s features. She could only guess it was likely a very beautiful woman.
Because when the woman stepped out, Xiao San could distinctly feel the crowd’s awe around her.
A very beautiful woman?
Xiao San watched as the woman in the tulip-colored cheongsam drew nearer. With her face mask and sunglasses, her outfit seemed completely mismatched.
Yet, no one in the crowd seemed to disapprove of her attire. Instead, their faces were beaming with smiles, radiating warmth and enthusiasm toward her.
Xiao San narrowed her eyes, feeling that the woman looked somewhat familiar.
But she was sure she had never met her before.
Soon, this foreign noblewoman named Misery took her seat in the viewing stand.
Xiao San observed Misery with curiosity, eager to catch a glimpse of her face.
Perhaps her gaze was too intense, for it accidentally met Misery’s line of sight.
Just as Xiao San was about to awkwardly look away, Misery quickly averted her eyes.
Maybe it was just an illusion perhaps Misery had merely glanced around aimlessly and hadn’t actually noticed her at all.
Thinking this, Xiao San brushed aside the faint sense of familiarity in her heart.
Events like these were all the same, and besides, Xiao San wasn’t there to participate. No matter the applause or cheers, her only job was to serve tea and water whenever someone needed it.
By the end of the day, the pay wasn’t much, but she was thoroughly exhausted.
As the attendees gradually dispersed, the sky began to darken.
Ge Weizhong arrived late, greeting various staff members as he made his way over to Xiao San.
“You’ve worked hard. You must be exhausted.”
Xiao San waved her hand dismissively. “You’re paying me, Senior Ge. If I complain about being tired, you might not hire me again, and then I’d really be broke.”
Ge Weizhong’s features weren’t delicate in fact, they were rather rugged but around Xiao San, he always seemed a bit bashful.
“If that’s the case, then I should hire you more often. I can’t let you suffer from poverty or hunger.”
Xiao San patted Ge Weizhong’s shoulder in a friendly, comradely manner. “You can count on me. Just keep hiring me, and I’ll make sure everything is done perfectly.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
Ge Weizhong tried to explain further, but Xiao San had already shifted her attention elsewhere, making it impossible to continue the topic. “So, what’s the deal with Ye Ding?”
“Ye Ding…”
“I heard he has quite a bit of influence enough to make it impossible for someone to find a job in this city?”
Ge Weizhong chuckled. “Who told you that? That’s an exaggeration. Even the Shen Group couldn’t make it impossible for someone to find work here.”
“Oh right, the Shen Group.” Xiao San had almost forgotten. The Shen Group was portrayed as the dominant enterprise in the city, one of the few major corporations nationwide.
If she had already offended the Shen Group, why should she fear Yangyun Trading?
“Yangyun Trading used to be a subsidiary of the Shen Group. But because the Shen Group didn’t see much potential in it, they let the current chairman buy out Yangyun’s shares, completely separating it from the Shen Group.”
“Wow.” She didn’t really understand, but it sounded impressive.
“Anyway, don’t worry about Ye Ding causing any trouble. He’s pretty much a lone wolf,” Ge Weizhong said dismissively, then added, “I’m treating you to dinner today. How does that sound?”
“Treat us to a meal?” Xiao San’s eyes lit up.
“Right.”
Before Ge Weizhong could finish speaking, Xiao San had already happily called out to Zhang Rongrong, “Rongrong, the boss is treating us to a meal, hurry over!”
Upon hearing about a free meal, Zhang Rongrong immediately jumped over, her eyes sparkling as she looked at Ge Weizhong. “Boss, are you treating just the two of us, or everyone?”
Ge Weizhong sighed. “Everyone.”
“Woo-hoo!” Zhang Rongrong leaped up and immediately started rallying everyone. “The boss is treating us to a meal, everyone, hurry up!”
Ge Weizhong looked helplessly at Xiao San. “When did you two become so close?”
Xiao San shrugged, smiling as she watched Zhang Rongrong. “I just suddenly realized that even though she’s a bit stingy, she’s actually a pretty good person.”
