- Chapter 4 - A Bit Too Early for New Year Greetings
The phenomenon known as “joy leading to sorrow” occurred the very moment Yan Xun laid eyes on Bai Yang.
He had just leaped with all his might, prepared to perform a grand slam dunk for the girls on the sidelines, when he suddenly spotted a man standing beneath the hoop. The man was holding a suit jacket, a faint smile playing on his lips.
The sight of Bai Yang instantly triggered memories of that scene in the hotel room.
Extreme embarrassment struck like a bolt of lightning out of the blue, hitting Yan Xun squarely on the head. He felt as though he had been charred on the outside and tender on the inside, thoroughly cooked.
And then, Yan Xun, his soul momentarily startled out of his body, lost control over his physical form. He watched helplessly as his treacherous body plummeted from the air and landed on its knees right in front of Bai Yang.
The ball in his hands flew toward the sidelines, while his disobedient arms, acting on a survival instinct to grab something for safety, lunged forward.
Consequently, in front of the entire audience, Yan Xun, in a magnificent kneeling posture, clung tightly to Bai Yang’s thigh.
Bai Yang remained composed, continuing his conversation with Principal Zhou as if nothing had happened.
“Principal Zhou, the students at your school are quite polite.”
After a brief pause, he raised an eyebrow and added, “However, it is still a few months before the Lunar New Year. It is a bit too early for New Year greetings; I haven’t prepared any red envelopes in advance.”
This joke sent the surrounding crowd into fits of laughter. Only Yan Xun hung his head in misery, feeling the powerless exhaustion of a “living person who was internally dead.”
Principal Zhou was also quite embarrassed. “You there, student! Let go of President Bai’s leg first and stand up to talk!”
Yan Xun looked up, tears nearly welling in his eyes, and said in a low voice, “I want to get up too, but I think I hurt my knee. I can’t move.”
His pitiful expression made him look like a puppy desperate for its master’s care.
Looking at him, Bai Yang felt a slight itch at the roots of his teeth. He bent down, gripped Yan Xun’s arm, and helped him up.
Bai Yang asked, “Can you still walk?”
Yan Xun’s knee was throbbing. He tried to move while leaning on Bai Yang for support. “Yeah, I can walk.”
He could walk, but the basketball game was over for him.
Yan Xun was subbed out, and the game continued. Principal Zhou grabbed two able-bodied students from the sidelines to help Yan Xun to the infirmary.
Bai Yang hesitated for a moment, glanced at the group of people accompanying him, and then calmly released his hold.
However, he instructed Secretary Zhou, “I recall there is a bottle of very effective topical medicine in the car. Go get it and give it to this student.”
A flash of surprise crossed Secretary Zhou’s eyes. Since when did they have topical medicine in the car?
Nevertheless, if the boss said it was there, it had to be there. Secretary Zhou responded solemnly, “I’ll go get it right away.”
He turned and left with hurried steps, his heart filled with nervous anxiety. He hoped there was a pharmacy near the school entrance. If he bought it immediately, the medicine would “exist.”
As a qualified secretary, Secretary Zhou gave himself a mental thumbs-up for his quick thinking.
The Principal and his party saw nothing wrong with Bai Yang’s instructions.
“They say the Bai Corporation has a people-oriented style; it’s clearly true.”
“With a leader like you, the Bai Group will surely succeed.”
The flattery came in one wave after another. Bai Yang listened indifferently, his gaze drifting into the distance. He saw the boy limping away. Though traces of embarrassment remained on his face, that vibrant smile was already blooming once again.
In the School Infirmary
The doctor let out a long sigh after examining Yan Xun’s knee.
Yan Xun’s heart skipped a beat. “Doctor, is it serious?”
The doctor shook his head and sighed again.
Yan Xun’s mouth twitched. “Doctor, don’t scare me.”
The doctor said with a heavy expression, “The injury is right on the knee. It would be best to go to the hospital for a CT scan. Unfortunately, our school clinic doesn’t have that kind of equipment.”
Yan Xun: “???” That’s it?
Just because there was no equipment, was it necessary to sigh repeatedly with an expression like he was beyond saving? Yan Xun felt that university doctors, after spending too much time with students, had been infected by their dramatic flair.
But a CT scan at the hospital? That would cost at least several hundred yuan.
For Yan Xun, whose monthly allowance was never enough and who relied on part-time jobs to get by, this was a significant expense.
He stood up and moved his leg around. “I think I’m fine; I probably didn’t hit the joint. I’ll rest for a couple of days and see. If it doesn’t get better, I’ll go to the hospital then.”
The doctor gave him a meaningful look, not exposing his obvious financial hesitation, and nodded. “Fair enough.”
“That won’t do.”
Secretary Zhou walked in holding the newly purchased medicine and spoke seriously to both of them:
“I believe it is always better to check the situation immediately after an injury and handle it as soon as possible.”
The doctor frowned. “Strictly speaking, that is correct.”
Yan Xun curled his lip and looked at the meddling Secretary Zhou. “And you are?”
Secretary Zhou gave a polite smile. “My name is Zhou. I am President Bai’s secretary. President Bai specifically asked me to deliver this medicine to you.”
“Deliver medicine to me?” Yan Xun was stunned. “Why?”
Being a typical college boy, he didn’t know when to stop prying.
Secretary Zhou: “!!!” He wanted to know why, too!
He maintained his smile. “President Bai is very thoughtful in everything he does. It’s just a small gesture; you don’t need to take it to heart.”
“Heh,” Yan Xun let out a suspicious chuckle. “Excessive politeness hides an ulterior motive. You think I can’t tell your President Bai is?”
Secretary Zhou’s smile stiffened, and he panicked internally. Is what? Did this kid realize his boss was acting out of character?
As Secretary Zhou racked his brain for a way to respond if Yan Xun caught on, he heard the boy say with absolute certainty:
“Your President Bai definitely wants to see me make a fool of myself! He wants to see if I’ll howl in pain like a ghost!”
“Give up! I’m a real man. For a small injury like this, I won’t even blink!”
That damn competitive spirit flared up instantly.
Secretary Zhou: “???” The logic of a straight college guy was something he truly could not fathom.
Still, it worked out.
“Student, you’ve misunderstood,” Secretary Zhou said. “I think President Bai feels guilty because he couldn’t catch you when you lunged at him, which led to your fall. He simply wants to compensate you.”
“The Bai Group owns several private hospitals. If you don’t mind, we can arrange a free check-up for you.”
One does not become the Chief Secretary to the CEO of the Bai Group without the ability to handle situations. Secretary Zhou’s suggestion hit Yan Xun’s weakness perfectly.
Yan Xun: “Free? Is it a legitimate hospital?”
Secretary Zhou: “Yes, free. Our doctors are all domestic and international experts.”
After a moment of deliberation, Yan Xun nodded in agreement without any psychological burden. Why pass up a chance to fleece a capitalist? He was just a poor college student; there was no need to be pretentious.
Yan Xun’s straightforwardness actually surprised Secretary Zhou.
Regaining his composure, he said, “Then I will report back to President Bai immediately.”
