- Chapter 3 - Fever Pitch Basketball
The three roommates stared at each other blankly, holding their breath as they listened to Yan Xun’s harrowing account of his experience.
Of course, to preserve his manly dignity, Yan Xun didn’t breathe a word about the fact that “it” had only lasted a second.
Li He apologized with a grave expression. “Xun-er, I’ve failed you!”
“I thought expensive meant quality, so I specifically picked the most expensive mixer. Who would have thought that it would let you fall into a den of gays!”
Zhang Yi and Lin Xing chimed in as well.
“We can testify to that. When the Boss bought the tickets, he even consulted us.”
“Sigh, times really have changed. Gays are actually worth more than girls now!”
“Xun-er, it is our fault you were scared out of your wits. Whether you want to hit us or punish us, we will not say a single word!”
Seeing their sincere apologies and noting that they did not look like they were lying, the fire in Yan Xun’s heart dissipated slightly.
As compensation, the three roommates immediately declared they would take turns buying him breakfast for a whole month.
Since things had already reached this point, Yan Xun, being a magnanimous person, decided to let the matter go.
The plane touched down. Dressed in a black trench coat, Bai Yang stepped out of the arrival gate, instantly drawing everyone’s gaze.
With looks rivaling a male model’s, his eyes were filled with a piercing coldness.
Secretary Zhou followed behind, pushing the suitcase while reporting the upcoming schedule.
“President Bai, you have a keynote speech on the frontiers of technology at H University in two hours. The transcript has been sent to your phone.”
Bai Yang lowered his eyes in thought, seemingly having forgotten the matter entirely.
Seeing his look of confusion, Secretary Zhou immediately explained:
“President Zhou of H University has invited you many times. Their laboratory has a partnership with one of our company’s projects, so you agreed to attend one lecture.”
Bai Yang did not say much, offering only a faint hum of acknowledgment.
Secretary Zhou opened the car door for Bai Yang, stowed the luggage, and habitually took the driver’s seat.
As the car traveled along the elevated highway, Bai Yang glanced out the window.
A vibrant, colorful sunset spread across the city skyline; the beauty of the setting sun was displayed to its fullest at that moment.
He suddenly remembered something and asked in a deep voice, “While I was abroad these past two weeks, did anyone contact you?”
“Who?”
Secretary Zhou froze for a moment, not understanding who the “anyone” his boss referred to was.
Bai Yang’s brow furrowed slightly as he gave a hint. “The person you delivered clothes to last time.”
The word “clothes” triggered a realization.
Secretary Zhou suddenly slapped his forehead as it clicked. He remembered that early that morning, the boss had asked him to buy a set of sportswear and deliver it to a hotel room.
He had been curious at the time: who was this “sacred being” that managed to stay overnight in the boss’s room?
Judging by the size of the clothes, it seemed to be a young man.
Secretary Zhou replied, “Boss, no strangers have contacted me in these two weeks.”
The number Bai Yang had left on the note was not his own, but Secretary Zhou’s.
However, he had actually never contacted him.
Bai Yang was somewhat surprised. After a brief silence, he said, “Understood.”
Secretary Zhou stole a cautious glance at his boss. Bai Yang’s expression was calm, revealing absolutely no abnormal emotions.
Still, Secretary Zhou was incredibly curious about who this person was, specifically someone who could make the boss take time out of his busy schedule just to ask about them.
“Me?”
“Why am I the substitute? Why should a professional-level player like me sit on the bench?”
Yan Xun rolled his sleeves up to his shoulders, aggressively posing his soul-searching question to Li He.
The captain, Li He, was not intimidated. Instead, he gave a wide sweep of his hand, pointing at the girls along the sidelines of the basketball court.
“Because you are too handsome!”
“Letting you sit as a sub was a unanimous vote by the brothers! With you out there, how would the rest of us ever have a chance to shine?”
“Xun-er, give your brothers a path to live!”
A string of question marks popped up over Yan Xun’s head. He thought there was some reason they were ostratizing him, but it was just this?
Yan Xun’s tone softened. “Wait, Captain, I do not follow. The fact that I am handsome is one thing, but what does that have to do with me not playing?”
“It has everything to do with it,” Li He sighed sentimentally. “In the previous matches, you were our main force. To get points, you had to be out there.”
“But in today’s game, the opponents are all little fried shrimp. We do not need you; the brothers can handle them just fine.”
At this point, Li He hooked his arm around Yan Xun’s neck, pulled him a few steps away, and whispered:
“There are a lot of girls here today, and the brothers want to show off a bit. So, give them a chance to perform for the first three quarters. You just go on in the final quarter and do your thing.”
“That way, everyone gets a chance to shine and a chance to escape being single. Right?”
Since it had been put that way, what could Yan Xun say?
Sitting on the cold bench because he was too handsome was a reason he could, perhaps, accept.
Today’s opponents were from the Computer Science department. To them, the Physical Education majors, they really were just little fried shrimp.
There was almost no suspense in the game as the score was completely one-sided.
On the sidelines, Yan Xun watched until he grew drowsy. After several yawns, the fourth quarter finally arrived.
Finally, it was his turn to play!
His long-suppressed combat power exploded in the final quarter.
Once Yan Xun took the court, his playstyle was incredibly fierce. Jump after jump and dunk after dunk ignited the atmosphere of the entire court to a fever pitch.
Screams erupted one after another from the court, and the deafening sound caused passersby to stop and stare.
Having finished his lecture, Bai Yang was touring the campus accompanied by the University President. Attracted by the screaming, he glanced toward the basketball court.
Beyond the surging crowd, a boy full of power leaped high into the air!
His splayed fingers gripped the ball firmly, slamming it into the hoop with a fierce “Boom!”
A crisp sound echoed as the ball went through the net.
The boy hung from the rim with both hands. Beneath his slightly hiked-up white jersey were lean, fluent muscles. A pair of well-defined, muscular long legs swung in the air, framed by the sunset-filled sky. He was so dazzling that one could not look away.
When his long legs hit the ground, he tilted his head back and triumphantly spread his arms to the entire crowd, wearing a wild, arrogant smile like a victor.
Exuding pheromones, the boy seemed to glow in that instant.
Bai Yang’s pupils contracted. The fingers of the hand holding his suit jacket trembled slightly.
It was him.
The University President noticed that Bai Yang seemed interested in the game and suggested with a smile:
“President Bai, would you like to head over and take a look? Today just happens to be a match between Physical Education and Computer Science.”
Beside them, Secretary Zhou was about to remind them that President Bai was in a hurry and had a dinner banquet later.
To his surprise, Bai Yang replied, “Okay.”
Secretary Zhou was startled, and a flash of astonishment crossed his face.
The electronic screen showed five minutes remaining in the match, with a score gap of over twenty points.
The victory was already locked in, and the losing side had lost the will to fight.
Thus, the entire court had practically become Yan Xun’s one-man show.
