- Chapter 12 - A True Straight Man
“Impossible!”
Brother Liu handed the envelope filled with cash to Yan Xun, his face full of doubt.
“If you are a straight man, how could you interact with a total stranger like that without a single hint of awkwardness?”
Yan Xun tore open the seal to take a look and immediately grinned from ear to ear, winking at Brother Liu.
“Brother Liu, let me tell you a secret.”
Brother Liu asked, “What?”
Yan Xun lowered his voice. “That Number 365 was not some stranger; that is my buddy!”
“Your buddy?”
Brother Liu looked completely unconvinced. Working on this street, he had long ago developed an extraordinary eye for people. The outfit that Number 365 hunk was wearing was not something an ordinary person could afford. A custom-tailored suit and gemstone cufflinks would not cost less than several hundred thousand, and the watch he wore started at two million at the very least.
Brother Liu sneered. “You have such a wealthy friend and you still come here for part-time work? Even a tiny bit of grease leaking from his fingernails would be enough for you to live on for a lifetime.”
Upon hearing this, Yan Xun gave Brother Liu a thumbs up.
“Impressive! Brother Liu, you really have a good eye. My buddy is indeed very rich. But his money is his; for no reason at all, why should he give it to me to spend?”
That made a lot of sense, but next time, do not say it.
The person involved is often confused while the bystander sees clearly. If Number 365 did not have feelings for Yan Xun, Brother Liu would twist his own head off and kick it like a ball. However, looking at Yan Xun’s expression, he did not seem to be lying.
Brother Liu asked, “Are you really a straight man?”
Yan Xun tucked the envelope into his bag. “Of course! If I were not straight, would I let a guy with such great qualities as my buddy off the hook? Who does not want to soar to the top and become a phoenix?”
As he spoke, he slapped his own backside with an exaggerated motion.
“Unfortunately, this butt of mine simply cannot open up for a buddy!”
Brother Liu: “…”
Fine. The assessment was complete; this kid really was a straight man. Only a straight man would be so reckless and crude when making jokes.
“What a pity,” Brother Liu remarked with a sigh, before something else occurred to him, bringing a look of concern to his face.
The river flows without feeling, but the falling blossoms have intent. He hesitated for a moment before offering a reminder. “Xiao Yan, Brother Liu might not be anyone important, but I am a few years older than you, so I still have to warn you. A boy should protect himself when he is out, especially regarding your…”
Before Brother Liu could finish, he suddenly heard a click.
He looked up and saw a figure standing at the end of the corridor. The sound just now had been the noise of a lighter being struck.
Bai Yang held one hand over his mouth to shield the cigarette while the other held the lighter. He lit the cigarette, took a drag, and then spoke calmly.
“Yan Xun.”
Hearing the familiar voice, Yan Xun turned around and gave a lighthearted smile.
“Brother!”
He ran over to Bai Yang and placed a hand on his shoulder. “I thought you said you were waiting for me outside?”
Bai Yang’s voice was very faint. As he spoke, he shot a sharp look toward Brother Liu.
“I saw that you had not come out for a long time. I was worried the owner of this shop would not act like a decent human and would refuse to honor the promise to give you your bonus. I was not at ease, so I came to check.”
Upon hearing this, Yan Xun tilted his head and rubbed it against Bai Yang’s shoulder.
“Brother, I really did not misjudge you. You are a true buddy!”
He waved goodbye to Brother Liu and then walked out with Bai Yang, chatting and laughing.
Brother Liu stood where he was, feeling a chill down his spine.
“My goodness! That man’s aura is so powerful!”
Just one warning glance from him had made Brother Liu’s legs feel weak. He watched the two of them leave and shook his head helplessly, sighing.
“Xiao Yan, oh Xiao Yan. You are about to walk right into the tiger’s mouth, and you still treat him like a buddy? Forget it, forget it. It is none of my business. I really cannot afford to provoke someone like that. I am sorry, Xiao Yan. Good luck to you.”
Yan Xun chose the place for the late-night snack. It was on the street right behind the bar street, a very short distance away. Yan Xun and Bai Yang walked over with their arms around each other’s shoulders.
Lin Heng had originally wanted to follow them to watch the fun, but Bai Yang refused, insisting he had business to attend to. Lin Heng could only say goodbye to Yan Xun and make a hasty exit.
At this hour, the food stalls were extremely busy. A waiter found a small table for them in a corner, and the two sat down face to face.
Yan Xun placed the menu in front of Bai Yang.
“Brother, thanks to you today, I was able to complete the card mission and get the bonus. This snack is on me. Do not be polite; order whatever you want!”
Bai Yang glanced at the menu. The most expensive dish was only 68 yuan, and the corners of his mouth quirked up. If one called him generous, he specifically chose this kind of small shop; if one called him stingy, his attitude about treating was very sincere.
Bai Yang pushed the menu back. “You should order. I do not have any dietary restrictions; I can eat anything.”
“Alright then.” Yan Xun did not stand on ceremony and took the menu to start ordering.
As he ordered, he explained the situation regarding covering Li He’s shift at the restaurant bar that night.
“So, you really misunderstood me. I do not just do anything for money.”
Yan Xun continued, “I had already prepared for the worst-case scenario, which was that I would just give up on the bonus. But then you appeared. Is that not just fate between us?”
He laughed cheerfully. “I saw that Number 365 was you, and that gave me the motivation to do the mission. If it had been anyone else, I guarantee I would not have deigned to earn that money. Jokes aside, I might be poor, but I am not someone who sells his body for money!”
Bai Yang did not doubt those words. Although they had only met a few times, Yan Xun was always very open and honest when facing him. This honesty came from the fact that Yan Xun sought nothing from him. If Yan Xun wanted to get anything from him, he would have approached him with a humble and flattering attitude.
Perhaps Bai Yang’s gaze was too direct, as Yan Xun noticed it and looked up in confusion.
“Brother? What are you staring at me for?”
Bai Yang snapped back to reality and asked calmly, “Are you very short of money?”
Yan Xun nodded. “I am!”
He sighed pretentiously. “You might not believe it, but I have a huge appetite. If I do not earn a bit more money, I might not even be able to eat my fill.”
After hearing this, a look of shock appeared in Bai Yang’s eyes, and he raised an eyebrow. “Is it that bad?”
Yan Xun nodded. “It really is! But it is fine. Since I earned so much money today, my living expenses for this semester are sorted out.”
Before he could finish, Yan Xun’s phone rang urgently. His phone was sitting on the table. When the ringtone sounded, he looked down at the caller ID. His brow furrowed, and after a moment of hesitation, he reached out and pressed the end-call button.
Bai Yang’s gaze swept over, remembering the time in the car when he had hung up a call in the same way. He had not seen clearly last time, but this time, Bai Yang saw it.
The caller ID displayed “Mother.”
Less than five seconds after the call was ended, it rang again.
Yan Xun hung up three times in a row. On the fourth time, he finally let out a long sigh, picked up the phone irritably, and answered.
