- The Top-Tier Enigma’s Alpha is Both Pampered and Wild
- Chapter 9 - This is the Last Time
Lu Yubai stared at the hand extended before him, his Adam’s apple bobbing slightly. Aside from that specific method, blood could also soothe him. However, he did not want it. It was meaningless now.
Yan Chi looked at him, his brow furrowing. “You will get into trouble if you stay like this!” Seeing Lu Yubai in this state, a trace of anger flickered in Yan Chi’s voice.
“I won’t get into trouble. Just lock me in here,” Lu Yubai replied. After all, that was how he had survived the last three years. He lowered his dark lashes, his eyes a mixture of stubbornness and chill. Slowly, his reason began to return in the silence.
Yan Chi stood up and looked at Lu Yubai without speaking.
Lu Yubai struggled to crawl toward the nightstand. He picked up the special-effect suppressant sitting on top and injected it into his body with practiced ease. Yan Chi had intended to stop him, but the movement was simply too fast. When Lu Yubai caught Yan Chi’s movement, his gaze became incredibly cold, even carrying a hint of hatred. This was Lu Yubai’s normal attitude toward him. He could not cross the line again; he never could.
Yan Chi’s hand froze in mid-air before he stiffly withdrew it.
As the suppressant entered his system, Lu Yubai’s face contorted in agony, his features twisting together. Special-effect suppressants were used to forcibly restrain the heat cycle. For an Alpha marked by an Enigma, they did not have much of an effect; they only provided temporary suppression. Once the medication wore off, the next outbreak would be dozens of times more violent than the current one.
Over the years, he had relied entirely on this specialized medicine. Aside from the drugs, he would also lock himself away. When the needle was pulled from his arm, the puncture mark looked like a dagger piercing Yan Chi’s heart. He could hardly imagine how Lu Yubai had endured those three years abroad. He suddenly realized how hurtful his previous words had been. Guilt pooled in Yan Chi’s eyes.
At this moment, Lu Yubai’s forehead was covered in fine sweat. His sanity was rolling in the mire of desire. He felt as if every bone in his body had been crushed; the pain was nearly unbearable. He looked up at Yan Chi with a strained expression. “Are there any more suppressants? I still feel so uncomfortable.”
Under the influence of the pain, Lu Yubai was now sober.
“Lu Yubai, injecting too much suppressant will kill you!” The coldness in Yan Chi’s brow vanished, replaced by endless fury.
“It won’t. I can get through this. This is the last time. Once I get through this, it will be fine.” He spoke with a faint smile on his lips. He was certain he could survive. He had survived for three years; he could do it again. He had only just reunited with Yan Chi; he was not willing to die yet.
Before losing consciousness, he murmured in a very soft voice, “Chichi, I can do it.”
The voice was so weak that Yan Chi could not catch the last part of the sentence. As Lu Yubai completely lost consciousness, he witnessed a strange sight. It did not seem real; it felt more like a dream. Yan Chi’s pupils trembled as he held Lu Yubai tightly, calling his name over and over again. His noble, cold face was filled with worry and tension, as if he were on the verge of madness.
Lu Yubai knew he must be dreaming. Dreaming was wonderful.
When Xu Zhiqiu finished washing his hands in the restroom, he heard the nurses gossiping excitedly.
“I heard Director Lin has a complicated Alpha patient. Apparently, he was marked by an Enigma and injected too much suppressant. He has lost consciousness.”
“How tragic! Enigmas are rare to begin with, and there are no Enigma-cleansing agents on the market. Special suppressants are not very effective against an Enigma’s mark. Looking at him, he has probably been abandoned.”
“Tell me about it. Who would dare to be marked by an Enigma? An Enigma’s mark is no ordinary thing. If you are abandoned by them, then for the rest of your life…”
Before they could finish, Xu Zhiqiu’s eyes sharpened. He rushed forward anxiously, interrupting their conversation. “Where is that Alpha?”
“On the second floor, with Director Lin.”
Xu Zhiqiu hurried to Director Lin’s office like a whirlwind. When he entered, Director Lin was talking to a tall man with a very solemn expression. Lu Yubai was lying on the bed, his face pale and his condition looking terrible. Xu Zhiqiu’s fists clenched. He walked up to Yan Chi, gritting his teeth. He looked Yan Chi up and down, his eyes filled with hostility.
“You are Yan Chi?” His voice rolled with anger.
“I am,” Yan Chi replied.
Xu Zhiqiu struggled to control his emotions. He turned to Director Lin and said, “Director Lin, this patient was previously under my care. I am familiar with his situation. I would like to transfer him to my department.”
Director Lin nodded in agreement.
Yan Chi carried Lu Yubai over to Xu Zhiqiu’s side. He placed Lu Yubai carefully on the hospital bed, watching him with a nervous expression, unwilling to leave his side for even a single step. Seeing how much Yan Chi seemed to care now, Xu Zhiqiu gave a light sneer. “Are you his Enigma?”
His cold voice carried a hint of disdain. Yan Chi could feel the hostility coming from Xu Zhiqiu, but he had no other emotions; he only asked coldly, “Has he come for treatment before?”
Xu Zhiqiu’s gaze turned even colder. “What is the point of an Enigma who abandoned his Alpha for three years acting so hypocritical now? If it were not for you, he would not be like this.”
Yan Chi was speechless. It was true that he had been the one to propose the separation back then. But he…
Seeing the complex emotions of guilt and worry on Yan Chi’s face, Xu Zhiqiu stopped taunting him. “Mr. Lu is my patient. Three years ago, he came to get several injections of special-effect suppressants. You know that this stuff is expensive and very harmful to the body. I did not want to prescribe them to him at first. But he said he had broken up with his Enigma. I advised him to go back and find you; someone marked by an Enigma cannot survive it on their own. He did not believe me. It has been three years. I thought he had actually managed to survive it.”
Xu Zhiqiu sighed deeply and did not continue. Yan Chi’s eyes grew red, his heart aching for the unconscious Lu Yubai. When they separated, Yan Chi had told him that if Lu Yubai ever had an outbreak during those three years, he could come find him at any time. He would help him. But Lu Yubai had never contacted him. In three years, they had not met once.
Yan Chi’s large hand stroked Lu Yubai’s arm, which was covered by his shirt. His heart felt as if it were bleeding. It was as if thousands of insects were gnawing at every inch of his skin, crushing his bones.
“Just tell me how to save him,” Yan Chi said sternly.
“Save him? Noble Enigma, if you wanted to save him, would he even be here? If he takes any more suppressants, Lu Yubai will truly die. I am not joking! You do not have to love him, but please help him through this crisis. I think this should be the last time.”
Every word from Xu Zhiqiu was like a knife stabbing into Yan Chi, leaving him riddled with wounds and drenched in blood.
