- Chapter 12 - We Are Very Compatible; Marry Me and I Will Bring You Luck
Lu Yubai’s eyes turned cold for a moment. His gaze sank, becoming as silent as a deep pool of water.
“Yes,” Yan Chi said, his thin lips moving only after a long silence.
Lu Yubai cut him off before he could continue. “Yan Chi, it does not hurt! So, I do not want you to pity me.”
The air fell into a heavy stillness. Yan Chi fell silent again. After a long while, he raised his eyes to look at Lu Yubai. His gaze held a few more degrees of coldness and distance; his eyes were dark as he let out a faint sigh.
“Lu Yubai, it was my fault for marking you three years ago and failing to stay by your side through your heat cycle. It was also my dereliction of duty for failing to resolve everything for you. I apologize to you.”
Lu Yubai’s heart trembled. He never wanted to hear those things. He lowered his eyelids, avoiding Yan Chi’s gaze. He feigned composure by shoving his hands into his pockets and rubbing them together; no one knew that his knuckles were trembling with tension.
Right now, he was no different from a prisoner waiting for judgment. Rather than waiting for Yan Chi to say something heartbreaking, he preferred to say it himself. At least that way, he would not have to hear the most painful words, and his heart would not hurt quite as much.
“Yan Chi, I know you do not like me. In fact, you probably hate me.” Lu Yubai paused and looked up slightly, the determination in his eyes unshakeable. “But it does not matter. I can pursue you, just like you used to pursue me. We are a perfect match! You are three years older than me, and I am exactly three years younger than you! I even had a master calculate it; our horoscopes are very compatible. Marrying me will bring you luck and prosperity! Or, I could marry you instead.”
Yan Chi barked at him, “Enough!”
His voice was like shattering ice, and his chilling gaze showed no emotion whatsoever. Lu Yubai trembled. Yan Chi rarely got angry. Seeing him flinch, Yan Chi stopped being harsh. He reined in his emotions, and the anger in his eyes turned into indifference.
“Lu Yubai, I am in no mood to discuss feelings right now. I hope you will not hold any emotional expectations toward me. You should be very clear about the reason we got married. I do not want what happened three years ago to happen again. It is impossible for me to develop feelings for you again. You can request a divorce at any time, and I will provide you with financial compensation. You are still you—the free Lu Yubai who can like any Omega he wants. I will not restrict any of your actions, nor will I interfere in your private life.”
Yan Chi was serious and solemn. His words were like a blunt knife, scraping against Lu Yubai’s heart stroke by stroke. So, Yan Chi could give him everything except love.
Lu Yubai’s eyes reddened, and his voice grew hoarse. “I do not like Omegas anymore. Really!” he emphasized.
Yan Chi replied, “Even if you like Enigmas, it has nothing to do with me.”
Lu Yubai pursed his lips and stopped talking. Seeing his silence, Yan Chi stood up and cleared the plate in front of him. Just as he was about to return to the kitchen, Lu Yubai called out to him, “Yan Chi! I know you hate me, and I know you only agreed to marry me for Grandpa’s sake. We have known each other for eighteen years; I do not believe you could just stop loving me like that. I am a difficult and selfish person. No matter what you say about me, I want to fight for myself one more time.”
His voice was clear and crisp, sounding as if it might break at any moment. Yan Chi did not turn back. His cold, lonely silhouette was as resolute as when he had left years ago. He only said, “Drink the milk.”
Lu Yubai looked at the glass filled with milk on the table, his eyes aching. He froze for a few moments. Finally, he endured his nausea and finished the milk. When he brought the glass inside, Yan Chi was operating the dishwasher. As he prepared to wash the glass, Yan Chi appeared behind him unnoticed, his large hand taking the glass from his grip. Lu Yubai jumped in surprise.
“Go sit outside,” Yan Chi commanded.
“You do not want to see me that much?” Lu Yubai hummed softly.
Yan Chi’s brow furrowed slightly, but he did not answer. He said, “Stay out of the kitchen from now on.”
Lu Yubai was confused. Yan Chi looked down while washing the glass and added, “We are out of oil. I will go buy some when I get back tonight.”
Suddenly, Lu Yubai thought of something. His mind buzzed, and his face felt as if it were on fire, burning intensely. His pupils trembled, and he stopped supporting his waist. Forcing himself to remain calm, he walked out quickly. By the time he reached the kitchen door, he was practically running.
His speed was nothing short of a medical miracle! Looking at his comical retreating figure, a trace of a smile appeared in Yan Chi’s eyes.
When Yan Chi finished washing the glass and went out, Lu Yubai was sitting on the sofa, fully dressed. He lowered his gaze and tapped his watch formally. “Director Yan, it is time for work.”
Yan Chi went upstairs to get a white lab coat and gold-rimmed glasses. He was calling Uncle Zhou as he came back down.
“I will give you a ride. It is on the way,” Lu Yubai offered.
Yan Chi looked at him and remained silent for two seconds.
“What? Afraid I will eat you in the car?” Lu Yubai raised an eyebrow, a hint of mockery in the corners of his eyes.
Yan Chi did not make a fuss. As they reached the car, he noticed Lu Yubai’s legs were shaking slightly.
“Wait a moment,” Yan Chi called out.
Lu Yubai thought he was going to back out and immediately locked the car doors. He gave a successful grin. “Once you are on my pirate ship, there is no getting off!”
Yan Chi looked at his legs, a flash of worry and guilt crossing his eyes. “I will drive.”
Lu Yubai was puzzled. Why? He followed Yan Chi’s gaze down to his own trembling thighs. Damn it. How could he be this embarrassing? He pressed down on his thighs and gave an awkward smile. “Um, Jiangcheng is quite cold. I have been a bit unaccustomed to the climate lately.”
Yan Chi: “…”
Lu Yubai fell silent in embarrassment; he did not even believe his own clumsy excuse. He was a Jiangcheng local who had lived here for twenty-eight years; how could he be unaccustomed to the climate? Besides, it was October; it was not cold at all. Under Yan Chi’s scrutinizing gaze, he got out of the car and switched seats.
While driving, Yan Chi put on his gold-rimmed glasses. The sunlight poured through the window onto his face, with shadows flickering as they passed buildings. Light and shadow crossed over Yan Chi’s face, making him look warm and gentle one moment and bone-chillingly cold the next. It was exactly like this bad man’s attitude toward him.
Yan Chi’s gaze was indifferent. The lines of his profile were sharp and well-defined, with a sense of cold detachment between his brows. With the addition of those gold-rimmed glasses, he looked even more like a man of forbidden desires.
Lu Yubai truly did not know how many young girls and boys in Jiangcheng had been captured by this face. Just as he was admiring the view, an annoying face suddenly popped into his mind. His pupils turned icy, and a thick aura of hostility rose in his eyes. He frowned and asked, “Is Lin Lan still working at the institute?”
“No. Why?” Yan Chi asked, his expression confused. This was already the second time Lu Yubai had mentioned Lin Lan. He had only been back for a few days and had already brought him up twice.
Yan Chi’s face darkened. While Lu Yubai was dazed, the hand Yan Chi held the steering wheel with gripped so hard that his knuckles turned white. Suddenly, the ringtone of a mobile phone interrupted their thoughts. It was Lu Yubai’s phone. It was a call from Lu Bo.
He answered the phone. Yan Chi could not hear what was being said on the other end, but he could hear Lu Yubai’s voice. “That is right, I was the one who hit him.” Lu Yubai gave a cold laugh and pushed his tongue against his back molars, looking every bit like a nonchalant rogue.
