- Chapter 8 - Playing Matchmaker
The next day in the middle of the night, Pei Yan got up in the dark and stealthily slipped out.
He felt as though he had already formed a habit of going to find Xie Yu every single day.
Xie Yu wagged his tail, showing great enthusiasm. “Brother, why have you come so late today?”
Pei Yan poured out all of his speculations from the previous night in one go. Having held it in for an entire day with no one to talk to, he was nearly dying of suppressed frustration; speaking it all out now felt like a true relief.
Xie Yu: “…”
“So, Brother thinks that Lu Xiao likes another Omega?”
“Exactly! Otherwise, why would his attitude be so strange?”
Xie Yu: “…”
I have to say, Brother is quite dense when it comes to matters of the heart.
Sigh, it seems my path to wooing Brother will be long and arduous.
However…
“Brother, do you want to find out which Omega it is and then try to set them up?”
At least Brother wasn’t trying to play wingman for him and someone else.
Xie Yu felt a bit smug about this.
Pei Yan sat on the beach, letting the sea breeze blow against him. “Of course. It’s not easy for this buddy of mine to run into an Omega he likes. Besides, he’s so cold and aloof; that kind of personality doesn’t win an Omega’s heart.”
“I think,” Xie Yu pondered for a moment, pretending to analyze it seriously for him, “he probably likes that Omega who made tea for you guys.”
Pei Yan was puzzled. “Why?”
“Look, Brother.”
Xie Yu began to count them off on his fingers.
“First: When the Omega invited you two for tea, you agreed. Mr. Lu’s face turned sour because he wanted to be alone with the Omega, but Brother stuck his foot in the middle.”
“Second: When the Omega ‘accidentally’ knocked over the tea… spilling it on Brother, and cried saying he wanted to help you apply medicine, Lu Xiao rushed to say he would do it instead. Wasn’t that just because he was afraid of you and the Omega having skin-to-skin contact?”
“Third: When Brother said the tea was delicious and that you wanted to come again in the future, Lu Xiao’s face went dark and he ignored you. Doesn’t that show he feels Brother doesn’t understand his feelings for the Omega? He wants to spend time with the Omega he likes, so he thinks Brother is annoying and an eyesore?”
Pei Yan suddenly saw the light and gave a thumbs up. “You really are something. That analysis makes perfect sense! To think I’ve been such a huge third wheel for so long.”
On the surface, Xie Yu smiled. “It’s nothing. As long as Brother remembers to pay less attention to that Omega from now on.”
In reality, he was complaining internally: You sneaky Omega, trying to hook up with my Brother while I’m not around?!
Using an old trick like spilling tea to get a chance to touch him?!
Have you no shame!
Pei Yan: “That goes without saying! It’s a good thing you analyzed it for me, otherwise, I wouldn’t have noticed!”
Xie Yu laughed. “Now that Brother knows, how do you plan to set them up?”
Pei Yan: “By organizing a gathering, of course, so they can meet alone.”
Xie Yu extended his index finger and wagged it gently. “Brother, you can’t let them know.”
“Why?”
“They might get shy and decide not to go, then Brother’s plan would go to waste, wouldn’t it?”
“That’s true. So what should I do?”
Pei Yan’s train of thought was now completely following Xie Yu’s lead.
“Brother can invite them both to meet individually in your own name. But of course, Brother isn’t allowed to go.” As he spoke, Xie Yu reached out and tapped Pei Yan on the forehead.
“I know, I know! I definitely won’t show up between them and act like a bright lightbulb again!”
Pei Yan was a man of action. He picked a fine day when no Zerg appeared and used Xie Yu’s method to invite the two of them separately. Thus, the two individuals—each harboring their own feelings for Pei Yan—met.
“Oh, if it isn’t Lieutenant General Lu? Where is Commander Pei? Has he arrived yet?”
The Omega looked left and right around Lu Xiao, his eyes filled with anticipation.
Lu Xiao gave him a cold sweep of his gaze. “He isn’t coming.”
The Omega peered at him. “How do you know? Did he tell you?”
Lu Xiao didn’t acknowledge him.
The Omega watched him silently for a few moments, then suddenly said, “Lieutenant General Lu… you like Commander Pei too, don’t you?”
Lu Xiao’s eyes snapped up, clear and freezing cold.
The Omega raised an eyebrow. It seemed he was right.
“Are you wondering how I knew?”
Lu Xiao: “…”
The Omega pursed his lips.
This guy only knows how to keep a stiff face. How boring.
“With that protective behavior you showed that day, anyone who isn’t blind could see it.”
Lu Xiao: “…”
Then why couldn’t Pei Yan see it?
The Omega continued to himself, “But I like Commander Pei too. After all, there isn’t an Omega who wouldn’t develop feelings for Commander Pei after interacting with him.”
Hearing this, Lu Xiao shot him a sharp glare. “There is no chance between you and him. We will leave as soon as the mission is finished. There is no possibility of further interaction between you and him in the future.”
The Omega nodded. “I know that. And I never expected Commander Pei to stay here for me. But I can follow him to the Imperial Capital. Commander Pei is so easy to talk to; as long as I shed a few tears and beg, he’ll agree. Besides, to tell you the truth, I’ve never seen what the Imperial Capital looks like in all my years.”
Lu Xiao hit the nail on the head. “What you value is only his status.”
The Omega didn’t hide it at all. “Who says? I like Commander Pei as a person, and I just happen to like his status as a bonus. Isn’t that normal?”
He paused, glancing sideways at Lu Xiao. “I’m not like you people who were born with a silver spoon. Is it wrong for me to plan for my future a bit earlier?”
“It’s such a rare fate to meet a great Alpha like Commander Pei; of course I have to treasure it and seize the opportunity.”
Lu Xiao didn’t want to waste any more time on him and turned to leave.
The Omega stopped him and said, “Let’s agree beforehand: we compete fairly. You aren’t allowed to secretly say bad things about me to Commander Pei while I’m not there! Otherwise, I’ll tell him you like—”
There wasn’t a shred of patience in Lu Xiao’s eyes. This was the first Omega he had encountered who dared to threaten him.
“If you say a word, you won’t need to exist in this world anymore.”
Leaving behind those words, Lu Xiao turned and left the area, leaving the Omega with his hair standing on end. He rubbed his arm which was covered in goosebumps and muttered, “This man is truly terrifying…”
When Lu Xiao returned to the base, Pei Yan leaned in with an ambiguous expression. “How did the talk go?”
Lu Xiao: “Don’t do such meaningless things again next time.”
Pei Yan said indignantly, “What do you mean ‘meaningless’? This concerns your lifelong happiness!”
“You don’t need to worry about it!”
Having said that, Lu Xiao slammed the door shut.
Pei Yan: “…”
What happened?
Did they not get along?
Four or five days later, the base was no longer in danger, so Pei Yan and the others prepared to return to the Imperial Capital.
That Omega did exactly as he said; he tearfully begged Pei Yan to take him to the Imperial Capital, promising not to cause any trouble…
After careful consideration, Pei Yan agreed.
After all, this Omega was alone with no parents; there was no harm in bringing him along.
However, he ultimately made the Omega board Lu Xiao’s warship. Firstly, he still intended to play matchmaker, and secondly, he wanted to secretly carry a certain fish back.
After all, swimming to the Imperial Capital would be quite exhausting.
Lu Xiao gave him a cold snort and boarded the warship directly.
Once everyone had left, Pei Yan took some clothes to the seashore, had Xie Yu change, and brought him onto his own warship, taking off toward the Imperial Capital.
Xie Yu looked around curiously at everything, but finally said, “Brother looks so handsome when he pilots a warship.”
Pei Yan was very susceptible to this kind of praise and said with a wicked grin, “I’ll show you something impressive.”
He operated the warship to perform a 360-degree aerial roll.
Xie Yu clapped his hands supportively. “Brother is so amazing!”
The next second: BOOM.
The warship suddenly exploded. A massive flower of fire appeared in the sky before turning into smoke, and the parts of the warship shattered, shooting out in all directions.
When Pei Yan woke up, the first thing that met his eyes was a somewhat dilapidated ceiling. It was raining outside—patter, patter—but luckily, the roof didn’t leak.
“You’re finally awake.”
Hearing the voice, Pei Yan turned his head. The speaker was a gentle-looking Omega, and beside him sat an Alpha with a displeased expression. Judging by their looks, they both seemed to be around forty years old.
Pei Yan asked, “How long have I been unconscious?”
The Omega said warmly, “You two have been unconscious for a day and a night.”
A sharp pain shot through his head, and Pei Yan uncomfortably tapped his temple a few times.
Once it eased, he suddenly tried to sit up urgently, but due to the pain, he could only lie back down obediently. He asked anxiously, “Where is Xie Yu? The man who was with me—how is he?”
The Alpha gave him a sidelong glance and pointed to his side.
“Such a large person is lying right next to you, can’t you see him?!”
The Omega slapped the Alpha, signaling him to stop talking.
Pei Yan turned to look. Xie Yu was lying peacefully beside him. The wounds on his body were gruesome and terrifying; there wasn’t a single patch of healthy skin on his exposed flesh.
Recalling the second before the warship exploded, Xie Yu had suddenly lunged toward him, using his own body to shield him in a tight embrace…
That was why he, with a human body, had been able to survive that explosion.
Pei Yan closed his eyes. Who on earth dared to tamper with his warship?
“You have no idea.” The Alpha seemed to be recalling something, his nose huffing. “When I opened the door last night, I saw him covered in blood, holding you while you were unconscious. He threatened to kill my husband if he didn’t save you! I ask you, is that any way to ask for a favor?!”
Pei Yan opened his eyes, a flicker in his gaze. “I’m sorry.”
“That night, it was windy and raining with thunder and lightning. A tall young fellow like him standing at my door making threats—you have no idea how terrifying it was!”
Pei Yan apologized again. “I’m sorry. I’ve troubled you. Once I return, I will definitely reward you heavily.”
“Stop talking!” The Omega pinched the Alpha’s arm while smiling at Pei Yan. “Don’t listen to his nonsense. He isn’t a bad person at heart; he just has a bit of a temper.”
Pei Yan: “It’s fine. It’s only right; his attitude was wrong.”
The Omega blinked, becoming inexplicably respectful. He stood up and said, “Since you’re awake, I’ll go cook something light for you to fill your stomach.”
Pei Yan: “…Thank you.”
After the two left, Pei Yan once again fixed his gaze on the still-unconscious Xie Yu.
This time, he had risked his life to save him…
So this was what it felt like to be protected for the first time.
A warm current welled up in the depths of his heart, making his chest feel heavy and full.
He reached out and brushed away the messy hair from Xie Yu’s forehead, his eyes filled with a tenderness he hadn’t even noticed himself.
He didn’t know how much time passed until the Omega brought the food. Only then did Pei Yan snap back to reality, blinking as he took the bowl with both hands.
He didn’t know what was in the porridge, but it tasted quite good.
