Chapter 9: Assistant 2.0
After Tracy handed the room keys to the duo, she went back to coordinating details with the stylist. Matt led Bai Xun to the hotel near the parking area. The moment they stepped inside, a soft scent of chamomile wafted through the air. Bai Xun let out a quiet, “Wow.”
“Smells good, right? Brother Yue suddenly switched his incense recently. Everything is chamomile now. He said it’s because it’s…”
Friendly to canines.
Matt cut himself off just in time. He did a quick mental calculation of when the scent change occurred, glanced gossipingly at the ears on Bai Xun’s head, and cleared his throat to finish the sentence.
“He said it’s good for soothing the nerves.”
Bai Xun recalled hearing something similar and didn’t think much of it. Once he confirmed he was allowed to film, he turned on his camera.
“Let’s split the work. I’ll check the accessories for today; Xiao Bai, you handle the clothes. Put the main outfits in the left luggage bag and the two backup sets in the blue one on the right.”
“Got it.”
The clothes had been prepared before they left, hanging on different hangers by category. Bai Xun efficiently checked the buttons and decorations for sturdiness, folded them neatly, and packed them into storage bags. He even took the large overcoats out of their dust covers to inspect them inside and out before putting them back.
Matt poked his head out from the bathroom. Seeing the smooth progress, he went back to his own tasks with peace of mind. Twenty minutes later, Matt returned with a tote bag and was stunned by Bai Xun’s work.
“Xiao Bai, your folding is so neat!” He zipped a bag and gestured for Bai Xun to follow. “The last intern assistant didn’t know how to fold; he just balled everything up and shoved it in. Nothing was wearable when we took it out.”
Bai Xun smiled modestly. “You guys were kind enough to let me film; the least I can do is not cause trouble.”
Matt took a deep breath. “Brother Yue… you have to find a way to keep Xiao Bai. We really need a smart kid like this, ugh.” He tilted his head back, revealing a pair of beast ears hidden in his hair.
“Matt, are you a beastman too?” Bai Xun asked, surprised.
Matt shook his head, his ears twitching. “Yeah, I’m a fancy rat.”
Bai Xun nodded, remembering the traits mentioned in the encyclopedia. “No wonder. I feel like you have to be really sharp to do this job well…”
Happy to be praised, Matt walked a bit faster. “You’re not bad yourself, Xiao Bai!”
…
On Set
When they returned to the gathering point, filming was about to start. Bai Xun spotted Yu Congyue standing by the dressing room. Matt handed Bai Xun a microphone and receiver provided by the staff, then went off to find the script supervisor.
“Help Brother Yue put this on. That’s the monitor. Be careful not to clip it where the fabric will rub.”
Bai Xun approached with the mic. Up close, he caught that familiar scent on Yu Congyue. His tail began to wag in small, rhythmic arcs. Today, Yu was wearing a technical windbreaker; clipping the mic to the outside would definitely cause noise interference.
“Bro, I might have to clip it inside…” Bai Xun unzipped the jacket slightly and gestured to a spot just below the chest. His fingertips faintly brushed against the curve of Yu’s chest.
Bai Xun’s hands shook slightly. He quickly threaded the wire along the inner lining to the waist, adjusted the cable, and zipped the jacket back up. He then moved to the side to organize the recording pen and transmitter. “Bro, if it pinches, let me know and I’ll adjust it.”
Yu Congyue let him fuss, watching as the “little dog” circled him like he was inspecting his territory. He suppressed a smile, moved around a bit, and found it perfectly comfortable.
“Great job.”
The praise made Bai Xun’s tail wag even harder, though he didn’t seem to notice. He waved it off humbly. “It’s alright, Matt taught me well.”
“Wait, I’m being credited?” Matt walked in and laughed. “Xiao Bai, you’re too honest. You don’t take any credit for yourself, do you?” He handed Bai Xun a document. “Here’s the call sheet. Memorize the schedule. The director says it’s time for the opening shot.”
…
The Keen Scout
Bai Xun thought things would settle down, but as soon as he stepped behind the camera, a thermos was shoved into his arms.
“Brother Yue has a bit of a cough lately. Xiao Bai, keep an eye out. During breaks, make sure he drinks some pear water.” Matt circled several rest periods on the schedule. Bai Xun memorized them with a single glance.
Suddenly, Bai Xun’s ears twitched. He heard the faint, rapid click-click of shutters from the woods across the way. He squinted and tapped Matt’s shoulder, pointing at the opposite ridge.
“Over there. Is someone taking pictures?”
“What? No way, security cleared it… Wait, really?” Matt grabbed a pair of binoculars. He caught the glint of a lens.
“Which fan is this? Don’t they want their lives? There are snakes on this mountain, and after the rain, that spot is definitely unsafe. I have to find security. Xiao Bai, stay here!” Matt bolted toward the logistics team.
Shortly after, a thunderous scream of “Jiang Jiang, I love you!” echoed from the ridge. Everyone’s attention was drawn as security led two girls carrying heavy cameras down the mountain.
“Heard it’s more sasaengs… man, what a mess…”
Bai Xun overheard the guards whispering. He marveled at how difficult it was to be a star; these stalkers were everywhere, leaving no room for privacy.
“Xiao Bai, how did you spot them?” Matt asked later, returning with two hot drinks.
“I heard the shutter clicks. I wasn’t 100% sure, though.”
“Incredible…”
“It’s time.” Bai Xun checked his watch, crouched down to stay out of the shot, and handed the thermos to Yu Congyue. He watched him take a few sips before taking the cup back.
“Xiao Bai, seriously, consider switching jobs,” Matt whispered. “The pay is great. The base salary is this much.” He held up four fingers.
“Four thousand?”
“Forty thousand.” Matt grinned slyly.
“What?” Bai Xun nearly yelled. That was way above the industry standard he had researched.
“Brother Yue is wealthy and generous. If you want to jump ship, tell me. I’ll give you an internal referral immediately.” Matt then noticed the camera on Bai Xun’s chest and covered his mouth. “Wait, don’t broadcast that!”
Bai Xun was tempted, but then he remembered the early mornings. He sighed. “The job is great, but it starts early… Don’t worry, I’ll edit that out.”
Seeing Bai Xun’s dedication to watching Yu Congyue, Matt poked him. “So, what do you think of Brother Yue?”
Bai Xun turned, his eyes full of respect. “He’s amazing. Handsome, generous, meticulous—he’s perfect in every way.”
It’s a match, Matt thought triumphantly.
Then, Bai Xun added with a touch of emotion: “If I can, I want to follow him for the rest of my life. You can’t find a better big brother than him anywhere.”
Big brother?
Matt almost fell over. The direction was all wrong. He looked at Bai Xun, who was wagging his tail while running to adjust Yu’s mic. He didn’t look like he was “playing dumb”—he genuinely seemed to see Yu as a mentor.
…
The Suspicious Letter
Lunch was brief. Bai Xun inhaled a bun in two minutes and went back to work. He watched Yu Congyue eat: two pieces of boiled chicken breast, a fist-sized portion of multigrain rice, some sautéed broccoli with shrimp, and half a box of blueberries.
“Does he always eat like that? It looks tasteless.”
“He’s maintaining his physique. He said he’s almost 80kg and needs to control it.”
“But isn’t he 190cm? He looks perfect.”
“The camera adds weight,” Matt sighed. “At his thinnest, he was 70kg. He looked invisible on screen then.”
“That’s rough…” Bai Xun thought. Yu was 12cm taller than him but barely 7kg heavier. Being a star was a grim life if you couldn’t eat seasoned food.
Later, they went to collect gifts from fans at the entrance. Bai Xun wore a mask and hat, handing out heat packs to the fans while Matt collected letters. One fan recognized him. “Wait, isn’t this Xiao Bai? You’re here too?”
Bai Xun smiled through his eyes, explaining he was “experiencing a new life.” The fan took a quick photo with him, saying she had followed him for a long time.
Back in the room, while sorting the letters as the rain started, Bai Xun’s nose twitched. He smelled something off. He cautiously pulled a piece of tissue from his pocket and sifted through the bag of mail. Finally, he pulled out a beige envelope that looked perfectly normal on the outside.
“What’s wrong?” Matt asked.
