Chapter 7: New Ideas, New Tracks
The car glided into the night as soft jazz suddenly filled the speakers.
“There’s somebody I’m longing to see, I hope that he turns out to be, someone to watch over me…”
In a daze, Bai Xun heard the familiar lyrics and thought he was dreaming. When he tried to turn over, he nearly rolled off the seat; the sudden sensation of weightlessness startled him awake, and he ended up sitting on the floor of the car.
He was in a car. But whose?
“You’re awake?”
From the front seat, Yu Congyue turned his head. Seeing Bai Xun sitting on the floor draped in a blanket, the corners of his mouth twitched upward. “You were sleeping so soundly I didn’t want to wake you. How was the nap?”
“It was good… Wait, why am I in the car?”
Bai Xun’s brain wasn’t fully online yet. His voice was raspy as he looked around, realizing they were in some kind of parking lot.
“Didn’t I say I’d take you for a late-night snack?” Yu Congyue unbuckled his seatbelt, took a bottle of room-temperature water from the console, and handed it to him.
“Snack? What time is it…” Bai Xun took the water and glanced at his wrist. The time glared back at him: 5:08 AM.
He froze for a few seconds, even checking his WeChat logs. His last sent message was at 2:18 AM.
“Bro, what time did we get here?” His voice was full of existential doubt.
“Around three-thirty? It was too early then; the shop opens at five.” Yu Congyue got out, walked to the other side to open the door for him, and leaned against the frame, smiling at Bai Xun’s bewildered face. “Now that you’re awake, we’re just in time for the first batch.”
“But didn’t you have to film…” Before Bai Xun could organize his thoughts, he was led to a shop at the corner that looked quite aged.
The owner looked up: “The usual? Want to add some fresh fish balls today? They just came in.”
Yu Congyue nodded, took off his mask, and pointed at the ingredients behind the counter. “I’ve been eating their Satay Noodles for over two years. I used to come here often even before the company moved. See what you want to add.”
The moment the aroma of the broth hit him, Bai Xun’s soul was whisked away. His love for food far outweighed his confusion over why a superstar was taking him for noodles at 5 AM. He pressed against the glass, swallowing hard, and pointed at the freshest-looking items.
“Duck blood, braised intestines, lean meat… oh, and squid. Toss in some fried tofu too.”
He remembered a similar taste from his childhood. Back then, though his parents weren’t exactly “normal,” they never cut off his living expenses, and he could afford a treat like this every now and then. Then he was sent abroad and never tasted it again. At first, he missed home every day, but once he had money, he didn’t want to go back to face the reality of the mess he left behind. The flavor he once longed for had faded into a blurred memory.
“I’ll have the usual then,” Yu Congyue said with a smile.
Aside from them, there were no other customers. Two bowls of steaming noodles were served quickly. Bai Xun buried his head in his bowl, eating intently. Seeing how happy he was, Yu Congyue felt relieved and asked the owner for two fried eggs.
“Fried eggs soaked in the broth are great at the end. You should try it.”
Bai Xun looked up, a bit of soup on the corner of his mouth, his eyes sparkling as he looked at Yu. Yu’s heart softened at the sight; he turned his head to pretend to look at his phone. Suddenly, he saw a message and his lips curled up.
“Little Bai, you really have great foresight.”
“Mmm?” Bai Xun chewed his noodles, tilting his head.
Yu Congyue pursed his lips and looked away, unable to resist the intensity of that gaze. He quickly adjusted his emotions and turned his screen toward Bai Xun.
“That person was actually in league with a reporter. They were pretending to be a stalker, but they actually intended to plant listening devices in the nanny van.”
“What?” Bai Xun knew the entertainment industry was a mixed bag, but he didn’t expect it to be this low.
“Your camera quality is quite good. The police technicians brightened the footage and could clearly see him installing something near the interior lights. They found a bug after a sweep, and they found a pinhole camera on him that he hadn’t had time to install yet.”
“Ah, glad it was caught early…” Bai Xun let out a long breath of relief. At least he had helped instead of causing trouble. With good food in front of him, his tail behind him began to wag in small, uncontrollable arcs again.
…
By the time they finished and got back to the car, the sky was starting to turn grey with dawn.
Yu Congyue smoothed his hair, which had been ruffled by the wind. Unable to find a hair tie on the driver’s side, he naturally leaned over to the passenger side glove box to grab one, tying his hair into a loose half-ponytail. “Speaking of which, you did me a huge favor. Once this job is over, how about I take you somewhere else to eat?”
Bai Xun had tensed up the moment Yu leaned over. His back was pressed against the seat, as stiff as a board. The scent emanating from Yu—a fragrance that felt specifically chosen for canines—didn’t dissipate, making his mind go blank. He even forgot to regulate his breathing.
Thump-thump. Thump-thump.
The sound of his heartbeat was so loud it felt like it was right in his ear. Hearing Yu’s “I don’t care about the trending topics” tone, Bai Xun’s eyes nearly went red again. He could only nod frantically. His beast ears bobbed with his movements, the fur tips brushing against each other with a soft rustle, prompting Yu to reach out and give them a squeeze again.
“Nn…”
A sound that wasn’t entirely dignified escaped Bai Xun’s lips. He realized it instantly and covered his mouth, his ears burning hot. It was strange—usually, when people touched his ears, he just felt a bit itchy and would shake them off. But with Yu Congyue, a touch felt like a string of tiny electrical currents racing down his spine, making him shiver followed by an indescribable, tingling comfort. He almost wanted to push his head forward to make it easier for the hand to pet him.
This is so abnormal.
His logic told him to move toward the door, but his head didn’t want to leave the warmth of that hand. Fortunately, Yu Congyue pulled back at the right time, clearly not intending to ask about that sound. He cleared his throat, buckled his seatbelt, and put his mask back on.
On the way back, Bai Xun was a bit nervous. To ease the awkwardness, he brought up Yu’s scent. “Bro, you smell really good.”
The moment he said it, he felt it sounded weird, but since the words were out, he just propped his chin on his hand and pretended to admire the scenery outside.
“It’s Jo Malone’s Chamomile. I heard it’s very popular with canine beastmen. It seems that’s true.”
Chamomile? Bai Xun had been struggling with insomnia lately, and his search results kept recommending chamomile aromatherapy, saying it had a soothing effect on canines.
“It really smells great. You have good taste, Bro.”
…
The car soon stopped at the entrance of Bai Xun’s neighborhood. He hopped out quickly, thanked Yu again for the snack, and—fearing being photographed—ran toward his building, waving from a distance before disappearing.
Having had a nap earlier, he wasn’t sleepy. He took a shower and edited the remaining footage into a video. After hitting send at the scheduled time, he checked his account stats.
He had to admit, the loyalty and traffic of Yu Congyue’s fans were staggering. In less than 24 hours since the clarification video, his follower count had surpassed 100,000 and was still climbing. The like-to-view ratio was a stunning 4:1.
Lying on his bed, Bai Xun thought about his next steps. He scrolled aimlessly and soon found several “wet market bargain hunting” videos with similar themes. Though they felt like copycats, their popularity wasn’t low. He had a premonition that the next episode wouldn’t hit as hard as the first.
The internet moves fast. Once a hot topic and a new “track” appear, imitators follow. Besides, his content wasn’t hard to film; anyone with a bit of common sense could do it. He felt bad for the market stall owner—he was just a businessman, now likely being disturbed by creators “seeking help” just to chase clout.
Bai Xun sighed, planning to visit the owner in a few days to support his business, and started brainstorming his next theme. He originally wanted to be a food vlogger since he’d lived abroad for a decade and could cook, but his current environment wasn’t great for filming, and his editing skills were only “passable.” He needed to level up.
He opened his laptop to clear out redundant footage and saw the “evidence” he recorded earlier. After thinking, he edited a key segment to send to Tracy for safekeeping. He checked the footage at double speed, blurring the location and key details. The frame stopped on Matt and another assistant working on set.
A spark of inspiration flashed.
Most short-video audiences are looking for “novelty.” The beauty and prank sectors were popular because people hadn’t seen that kind of content or group before. The wet market worked for the same reason. If a new theme is easy to copy, why not create an IP that is hard to replicate?
Bai Xun made a decision right then and there.
The new series: Professional Challenges, based on the “100 Job Challenges” that had been timeless in his original world. The quality of the first episode had to be high—so high that even if people copied it, they couldn’t reach his level.
He opened the chat with Tracy.
AA Get Rich Little Bai: Sister Tracy, I have a bold request. My new video series is about professional experiences. For the first episode, I wanted to ask if it would be convenient to film with you? The main content would be “A Day in the Life of a Celebrity Assistant.” If it’s okay, I’ll prepare a script; if not, no worries, I totally understand.
The reply was almost instant.
Sister Tracy (Yu’s Manager): No problem. Just send over the script for review once you’ve finished it.
