Chapter 13: Stalling 2.0
Bai Xun: That works for me! No need to go through too much trouble, I can walk already.
Xu Yi: You’re still injured, so we need to be careful. How about I pick you up at 2:30 PM tomorrow at the address you provided?
Bai Xun: Sounds good. See you tomorrow, thank you.
Xu Yi: See you tomorrow.
Bai Xun lay in bed scrolling through his phone until he felt a pang of hunger, then slowly stood up to give himself a small stretch. Since becoming a vlogger, his life seemed to be back to the grind—trapped at a desk by deadlines, with the only perk being the occasional outdoor shoot and the downside being an increasingly chaotic sleep schedule.
Knock, knock, knock.
He glanced at the time: 8:40 PM. Who would be visiting at this hour?
“Coming, just a second!”
Bai Xun hobbled to the door as fast as he could. When he opened it, the hallway was empty. However, the motion-sensor light was on, proving someone had been there within the last thirty seconds.
“Strange…” He poked his head out and sniffed the air, but couldn’t pick up any clear scent.
He didn’t notice a smartphone peeking out from the stairwell. Assuming it was just a prank, he didn’t dwell on it.
That night, it rained exactly as the forecast predicted. Compared to the misery of his first day in this world, Bai Xun’s living conditions had undergone a qualitative leap. With a hot water bottle and a brand-new down duvet, he fell into a peaceful sleep by 10:00 PM, spending the night in a sweet dream of overnight wealth.
…
The Setup
The next afternoon, a refreshed Bai Xun finished applying his medicine and headed downstairs fifteen minutes early, only to find Xu Yi already waiting. He stared wide-eyed at Xu Yi, who was roughly 1.9 meters tall.
Xu Yi recognized him instantly and hurried over to support him. She saw the surprise in his eyes and introduced herself as they got into the car.
“Hello, Mr. Bai. I’m Xu Yi. My beast form is a bear, and my family tends to be quite tall.”
Bai Xun shook her hand. There was no judgment in his eyes, only delight. “Oh, I’m not surprised by that! I felt over the phone that you’d be a mature and reliable woman. I’m just glad my prediction was right. Besides, you’re truly doing work for the youth; it’s good that public servants feel this secure.”
Xu Yi was taken aback. It was the first time she’d heard such a take, but she found she quite liked the phrase “public servant.” She couldn’t help but smile. “Mr. Bai, you truly are a man of unique ideas.”

The Preview “Accident”
At the location, Bai Xun was floored by the setup. His stall was actually two combined into one. Under the table were four large thermal dispensers, and the tabletop was equipped with induction cookers, pots, and even professional lighting for his livestream.
“I’ve prepared all the ingredients! Thank you so much, Teacher Xu. I’ll do my best to promote this!”
“I was actually thinking of delivering them to your house a day early,” Xu Yi noted his tail, which was wagging so hard it looked ready for takeoff. Seeing him this happy made her relax.
As they stood under the temporary awning chatting, a crowd of passersby began to gather and snap photos. Despite his mask, Bai Xun was betrayed by his tail once again.
“Is that Xiao Bai?” “Looks like him! Look at that tail—it’s the one that wrecked his room in that viral clip!”
The crowd grew dense. Before he could react, the situation began to spiral. He grabbed a megaphone to maintain order. “We aren’t officially open today, everyone, please watch your step—”
In the crush of the crowd, someone shoved him hard. As he stumbled, Xu Yi lunged to catch him, while her other hand snatched the “culprit” by their collar.
Bai Xun stood up and frowned at the girl who had been caught. She looked young and wore a mask, looking terrified.
“I’m sorry, I lost my balance. Are you… okay?” she stammered, looking like she was about to cry. She took a step forward, but slipped again, her hands digging sharply into his arm to steady herself.
Xu Yi frowned and pulled the girl up, turning to check on Bai Xun. He tested his leg; it was fine, but his arm stung where she had grabbed him. With so many people around, he couldn’t exactly make a scene.
…
Opening Day
The next day, Bai Xun arrived two hours early. Even though fans were already lining up, the numbers were manageable. It was a bit chilly, so he handed out number cards.
“It’s cold. I can’t start selling until 3:00 PM, so feel free to walk around and come back with your card later.”
“No worries! We’re Arctic Foxes, we’re not afraid of the cold!” a fan said, showing off a fluffy white tail.
Moved, Bai Xun opened his jar of marinated brown sugar apple slices and gave them each a piece on a wooden skewer. On one side, he started simmering the ginger, jujube, and goji berries; on the other, he brewed the black tea.
When the livestream officially started, his popularity hit number one in the city, surpassing DiDi, who was currently streaming from the mountains. Bai Xun didn’t notice; he was too busy handing out homemade nut cookies and tea.
“Thank you for the support! These are nut cookies; they go great with the tea.”
His efficiency was top-tier. Even though he had to stay seated, every customer left with a smile. He had brought 600 number cards, thinking they’d be plenty, but they ran out before the first hour was up.
While waiting for the next batch of tea to brew, his nose suddenly twitched. In the air, amidst the smell of sugar and tea, was a faint, unmistakable scent of chamomile.
He looked up so sharply he nearly knocked over his tripod.
“What’s wrong, Mr. Bai?” a staff member asked.
“Nothing… just a neck cramp,” he lied, suppressing his excitement.
He had spotted Matt in the crowd instantly. He grabbed a pre-packed bag of cookies and tea he’d prepared specifically for the studio team, then sent a quick message to Matt on his backup phone.
AA Lucky Little Bai: DDD, wait for me at the back of the local specialty shop. I made cookies and tea for you guys!
Matt: 11111, on my way!
Matt vanished into the crowd. Bai Xun excused himself to use the restroom and hobbled to the back alley of the shop.
The alley was quiet, leading toward residential buildings. The scent grew stronger here. Suddenly, he was pulled into a warm embrace. He looked up to see a heavily disguised Yu Congyue looking down at him with a smile.
Bai Xun’s pulse quickened. He was about to speak when he heard frantic footsteps nearby.
“Wait, where? Where is Yu Congyue?!”
