- Chapter 5 - The Wealthy Tycoon Has a Mental Illness (5)
On Monday morning, when Lin Junqing arrived at the office, he saw Qing Ye holding a cardboard box with a dark and gloomy expression. Before Lin Junqing could ask what was happening, Qing Ye walked up to him with a cold face.
“Assistant Lin Junqing, we are all in the same office. Is it really necessary to go to such extremes?”
“Now that I have been fired, are you happy?”
“You are truly the most hypocritical person I have ever met. You are a small-minded person.”
Lin Junqing was completely bewildered, having no idea what was going on. As Qing Ye carried the box past him, she slammed her shoulder hard into his. Lin Junqing frowned slightly, wanting to ask for an explanation. However, when he looked up, everyone who made eye contact with him immediately became busy. Seeing this, Lin Junqing realized that no one in the office wanted to talk to him. He had been ostracized.
Lin Junqing brewed a cup of coffee and brought it into Xie Lin’s office. Seeing that Xie Lin was not particularly busy, he asked, “President Xie, are you aware that Qing Ye has been dismissed?”
Xie Lin, having expected the question, looked Lin Junqing straight in the eyes. “Of course. I was the one who had her complete the resignation procedures.”
Lin Junqing placed the coffee by Xie Lin’s hand. “President Xie, may I ask the reason for Qing Ye’s dismissal?”
The things Qing Ye had just said to him were full of accusations that her departure was his fault, giving others the impression that she had been fired because he had reported her to Xie Lin. Xie Lin knew exactly what had happened; he had deliberately said certain things in front of Qing Ye specifically to make her resent Lin Junqing. The results were even better than he had anticipated. Now, everyone in the office avoided communicating with Lin Junqing, wary of him. If Lin Junqing wanted to talk to anyone, he had no choice but to come to him.
In a great mood, Xie Lin took a sip of his coffee. “I can tolerate an employee making mistakes, but I cannot tolerate them making the same mistake twice. Qing Ye’s heart is not in her work. I do not want to have to be on guard about where she might fall over every time I see her.”
“What is wrong? Are you very close with Qing Ye, and do you want to plead for her?”
“If you ask, I can let her return to work. After all, you are one of my few friends.”
Although Xie Lin was smiling, his heart was dark and calculating. If Lin Junqing truly tried to keep Qing Ye, he would ensure that she could no longer stay in Yun City. Knowing that Qing Ye’s departure was due to work-related issues, Lin Junqing breathed a sigh of relief and quickly waved his hands. “Forget it. My relationship with her was just average; we only spoke a few times.”
Xie Lin, feeling excellent, picked up his coffee and decided not to take further action against Qing Ye.
Lin Junqing’s workload was very light. Fearing he would be bored, Xie Lin had installed a small desk for him within his own office area. Lin Junqing could watch television or play games; as long as he was in the office, Xie Lin did not care if he took a nap. Xie Lin often told Lin Junqing that they were friends. Over time, Lin Junqing had come to believe it, and his attitude toward Xie Lin had shifted from initial respect and nervousness to warmth and ease.
During lunch, Xie Lin called out to him, “Are you eating in the cafeteria today, or are you coming with me?”
Xie Lin asked him this every day. If someone invited him to eat, he would go with his colleagues; if no one did, he would go with Xie Lin. Today, no one had invited him, and even Chen Dong was keeping his distance. Even though it had nothing to do with him that Qing Ye was fired, the entire office was treating him like the plague. Lin Junqing understood office politics; colleagues hated tattletales most of all, but he was not that kind of person.
What Lin Junqing did not know was that the office was avoiding him not only because of Qing Ye. After Xie Lin had seen Chen Dong patting Lin Junqing on the shoulder, Chen Dong had been forced to work overtime for a week, sleeping at 2:00 AM and waking at 6:00 AM every day. No one wanted to be the next Chen Dong. Smart people naturally stayed away from Lin Junqing. Those who were not as sharp assumed he was a tattletale who got Qing Ye fired, so they avoided him as well.
During lunch, Xie Lin deliberately asked, “Why does it seem like everyone in the office is avoiding you? Did they not used to greet you?”
Seeing Xie Lin’s confusion and believing that Xie Lin was not aware of what Qing Ye had said before she left, Lin Junqing looked around to ensure no one was near. He leaned in toward Xie Lin with a serious, secretive expression. Seeing this, Xie Lin cooperated fully and leaned his head closer to Lin Junqing. Upon catching the scent of Lin Junqing, Xie Lin could not help but lick his lips.
Lin Junqing recounted the morning’s events to Xie Lin. “Now everyone thinks I reported Qing Ye to you, that I am some sort of two-faced person, so they are all keeping their distance.”
Xie Lin lowered his voice as well. “Then what should we do? Should I have Qing Ye come back? We cannot let everyone keep misunderstanding you.”
Lin Junqing glanced at Xie Lin, and seeing that he looked completely sincere and not at all like he was joking, he quickly said, “Absolutely not. Bringing her back would only make things worse. My work is different from theirs; I do not have much professional intersection with them anyway, so their ignoring me will not affect my work.”
Xie Lin subtly licked his chopsticks and placed a piece of meat from his plate onto Lin Junqing’s. “I did not expect this to bring you so much trouble. Let this meat be my apology; please do not hold it against me.”
Seeing the smile in Xie Lin’s eyes, Lin Junqing picked up the meat and ate it. “I accept your apology. Eat quickly; we can rest for half an hour after we finish.”
Seeing that Lin Junqing was completely indifferent to his intimate gestures, Xie Lin felt both relieved and frustrated. Perhaps, in Lin Junqing’s eyes, two grown men acting intimately was just a sign of a strong brotherhood; the option that two men could be lovers simply did not exist for him.
When work ended, Xie Lin deliberately held Lin Junqing back. “I caused you trouble regarding the Qing Ye matter. Let me buy you a drink tonight.”
Lin Junqing felt Xie Lin was being too polite. “President Xie, you are being too kind. I have caused you plenty of trouble in the past, and I have never apologized once.”
Xie Lin’s voice was gentle. “You are my friend; those things were not trouble. I am not really apologizing; I am just looking for an excuse to go out for a drink with you.”
The bathroom faucet Lin Junqing had broken was something he had sabotaged beforehand just to see Lin Junqing drenched in water. The electric curtains Lin Junqing had broken were also intentionally damaged by him because he wanted to replace them with curtains identical to his own. The watch that Lin Junqing had accidentally scratched was something he had purposefully walked unsteadily to cause a collision. The replacement watch he gave Lin Junqing was the same model he wore, with a tracking chip hidden inside.
Xie Lin gently pushed Lin Junqing’s shoulder. “Let us go. We have not had a drink together yet. The bond between friends must be maintained with alcohol.”
Lin Junqing was curious to see what kind of alcohol wealthy people drank, so he followed Xie Lin. In the month he had been with Xie Lin, he had learned that Xie Lin was a very disciplined person. Usually, he was either at work or lying around at home, rarely going out. The thing they did most often at night was watch movies together. Even though Xie Lin was a coward, he loved horror movies. Every time he was frightened, he would shrink toward him, and sometimes, unable to control his fear, he would even hug him. Thinking of the tall, burly Xie Lin trembling like a rabbit in his arms, Lin Junqing could not help but want to laugh. Lin Junqing seriously suspected that Xie Lin had lost face by being scared during movies, which was why he was taking him to a bar now, perhaps because he wanted to see him drunk to regain his dignity.
The coffee table was covered in various bottles of alcohol. With a swipe of his pen, Xie Lin had spent 600,000 yuan. After the server left, Lin Junqing gasped. “You ordered so much; can the two of us finish this?”
“You are not planning on drinking yourself to death here, are you?”
“Or are more of your friends coming later?”
With a table full of alcohol like this, not to mention finishing it, one would be incapacitated halfway through.
Xie Lin picked up a pink-purple cocktail and handed it to Lin Junqing. “It is my first time out for drinks with you; how could I invite anyone else?” This was a sweet date between him and Lin Junqing.
Lin Junqing assumed that since Xie Lin ordered so much, his tolerance must be quite high. Little did he know, after just three glasses, Xie Lin was already muddled, hugging him and giggling foolishly. Lin Junqing tried to push Xie Lin away, but after trying for a long time, Xie Lin’s grip had not loosened at all, and he had worked up a sweat himself. Resigned, Lin Junqing lay back on the sofa and complained to the system: No wonder Xie Lin does not go out much. With this kind of alcohol tolerance, he would not dare sit at a dinner table.
His own tolerance was not great, but he had managed five glasses and still felt clear-headed; he felt he could handle five more. Unable to push Xie Lin away and seeing him sliding toward him, Lin Junqing had no choice but to wrap an arm around Xie Lin’s waist to steady him. If someone as large as Xie Lin slid onto the floor, he would not be able to lift him back up.
Xie Lin narrowed his eyes, watching Lin Junqing finish a cocktail that tasted like fruit juice but had a stronger kick than imported spirits. Using the intoxication as an excuse, he leaned his head on Lin Junqing’s shoulder, greedily taking deep breaths, enjoying the scent on Lin Junqing’s body. Lin Junqing had not intended to drink much, but thinking that these bottles were worth 600,000 yuan, he could not help but taste them one after another. Before long, Lin Junqing felt something was wrong; the room seemed to be slowly spinning.
“It is over. We are both drunk. We will have to spend the night in the private room.”
Lin Junqing was well-behaved when drunk; he curled up on the sofa and fell asleep. Once Xie Lin was sure Lin Junqing was asleep, he sat up slowly and, by the dim light of the booth, stared fixedly at Lin Junqing’s face. The system was very confused, not understanding why Xie Lin kept staring at Lin Junqing, and tried to speak to him, only to find that Lin Junqing was so drunk his consciousness had completely faded.
The sofa in the booth was large. Xie Lin took off his suit jacket and, covered in sweat, used his trembling hands to carefully unbutton Lin Junqing’s clothes. They had come straight here after work, and Lin Junqing was still wearing his formal suit; he was afraid Lin Junqing would not be comfortable sleeping like that. After removing Lin Junqing’s jacket, Xie Lin did not dare do anything else. He was afraid he would not be able to hold himself back. Contented, he lay down next to Lin Junqing, hugging him like a teddy bear.
Lin Junqing was squeezed into the very edge of the sofa by Xie Lin. He slept poorly all night, feeling as if a massive boulder was pressing down on him, preventing him from moving or breathing properly.
At 7:00 AM, Lin Junqing’s alarm went off. Dazed, he opened his eyes and saw that most of Xie Lin’s body was pressing down on him; no wonder he had dreamed of being crushed by a boulder. Lin Junqing laboriously pulled his hand out, rubbed his throbbing temples, and pushed the Xie Lin beside him. “President Xie, wake up. It is seven o’clock. We have to go to work today, and I recall you have a meeting at eight.”
Although he was just a personal assistant, Xie Lin had not kept his work schedule a secret from him. Xie Lin had been awake for a long time; he had barely slept all night because he was too excited, his mind too stimulated to rest. He had wanted to sneak a kiss from Lin Junqing, but he was afraid he would not be able to control himself. If he accidentally left a mark on Lin Junqing, he would certainly scare him, and Lin Junqing would run away.
Xie Lin pretended to have just woken up and deliberately leaned toward Lin Junqing, his lips lightly brushing against his cheek.
“Hmm? What time is it? My head hurts a bit, and my body feels heavy.”
Lin Junqing was initially shocked at being kissed by Xie Lin, but hearing Xie Lin’s hoarse, uncomfortable voice, his attention was immediately diverted. The space on the sofa was too narrow, and since they were both grown men, the gap between them was even smaller. That Xie Lin had accidentally kissed him must have been an accident. Seeing Xie Lin’s muddled expression, he probably had not even realized he had kissed him on the cheek just now.
