- Chapter 4 - The Wealthy Tycoon Suffers from Mental Illness (4)
Lin Junqing had expected his role as Xie Lin’s life assistant to be easy, but it proved to be anything but. Although he did not need to cook, he had to accompany Xie Lin during meals. He did not need to clean, but he was required to stay by Xie Lin’s side while he worked. Xie Lin was like a child who could not bear to be left alone; he needed someone present regardless of what he was doing. Whenever Xie Lin grew weary from work, Lin Junqing had to pour him water and massage his shoulders. Xie Lin’s muscles were as hard as stone, and after every massage, Lin Junqing’s wrists would ache for the rest of the day. After a month of working together, Lin Junqing finally settled into his position.
One day, Qing Ye from the secretary’s office found him. “Assistant Lin, it seems the stray cats downstairs are ill. Could you accompany me to see them at noon? I want to take them to a pet hospital.”
Lin Junqing was not close to Qing Ye, only knowing that she was the prettiest woman in the secretary’s office. He had heard office gossip that she had tried to seduce Xie Lin but had failed. Given his role, he wondered if Qing Ye was simply trying to use him to track Xie Lin’s movements. However, Qing Ye was well-liked and socially adept. Having worked for two years in his past life, Lin Junqing understood the nature of workplace interactions and agreed to join her at noon. He wanted to see what her true intentions were, though he had no intention of leaking Xie Lin’s itinerary or putting in a good word for her. He was merely a life assistant with no interest in meddling in Xie Lin’s romantic affairs.
After lunch, Lin Junqing took the opportunity to ask for time off. “Mr. Xie, I need to request an hour of leave for a personal matter.”
Xie Lin looked up, feigning nonchalance. “What is the matter?”
After a moment of hesitation, Lin Junqing chose to be honest. “Qing Ye said the stray cats downstairs are sick. I would like to help her find them and take them to the vet.”
Xie Lin did not want to let him go, but he could not stop him. Lin Junqing was an independent human being, not an object to be imprisoned. Once Lin Junqing left, Xie Lin’s expression darkened. He remembered Qing Ye, a greedy and foolish woman who fantasized about marrying into wealth based on her looks. Xie Lin stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, watching through binoculars as Lin Junqing and Qing Ye searched for the cats in the flowerbeds below. The more he watched, the worse his mood became; his temper flared, and his heart rate monitor began to vibrate erratically.
Because they were over a kilometer away, the system could not detect the changes in Xie Lin’s sunlight value. When the monitor alerted him, Xie Lin threw the binoculars aside, lay on the sofa, and squeezed his eyes shut, trying to empty his mind. Yet, the image of Lin Junqing laughing with Qing Ye haunted him. The mere thought of Lin Junqing marrying someone else made his head feel as though it might explode. Sensing he was losing control, he took a sedative, and his complexion began to stabilize. He could not afford to break down at the office, and he certainly could not let Lin Junqing realize he was a madman.
Downstairs, Qing Ye spent the entire time trying to pry information about Xie Lin out of Lin Junqing. Lin Junqing offered an embarrassed smile. “Mr. Xie is my employer, and as his life assistant, I have signed a non-disclosure agreement. I cannot discuss anything related to him with outsiders. Please, do not make this difficult for me.”
Qing Ye’s smile stiffened. “I am sorry. I did not know about the agreement. I just like Mr. Xie very much and cannot seem to control my feelings.”
Lin Junqing understood; Xie Lin was a catch, and it was hard to imagine any woman not liking him. He could not help but picture Xie Lin doing over two hundred push-ups at home, his entire body covered in hard muscle; he wondered which woman could even handle that.
Qing Ye soon gave up on finding the cats, as it had only been a pretext. She found the dirty, mangy strays repulsive. After she left, Lin Junqing continued searching, having heard a faint cry. After about ten minutes, he found a litter in a foam box: a lethargic tabby cat and three palm-sized kittens. Lin Junqing stroked the mother cat, and the kittens gathered around, licking his hand. Hearing the mother’s weak cries, his heart melted. Now that he had the means, he could not turn a blind eye to their suffering. Having lost his own life, he understood the fragility of existence more than most. Holding the dirty box, he hailed a taxi, not wanting to use Xie Lin’s car.
At the pet hospital, the doctor told him the mother cat’s condition was critical. It was suffering from severe inflammation and would not survive surgery; it had only a few hours left. Lin Junqing decided to stay and sent a text to Xie Lin asking for the afternoon off. When Xie Lin asked what had happened, Lin Junqing’s tone was dejected. “I found a litter of strays. The mother is dying, and I want to stay and comfort her.”
Xie Lin pulled at his tie in frustration. He grabbed his jacket, his voice low and raspy. “Where are you? I will come to find you.”
Lin Junqing gave him the location. When Xie Lin arrived, Lin Junqing was crouching before the incubator, watching the three kittens. He wanted to adopt them but worried that Xie Lin might dislike cats. Having lived in his villa for over a month, he had seen no signs of pets, suggesting Xie Lin did not care for animals.
Xie Lin stood behind him, looking at the kittens. “Are these the strays Qing Ye was feeding?” He wondered if Lin Junqing was doing this because of the cats or because of her. If it were for her, he would find these kittens intolerable.
Lin Junqing turned around. “Qing Ye does not like cats. She was not the one feeding them.”
Hearing the woman’s name again, Xie Lin gritted his teeth. His heart rate monitor vibrated constantly, and he was grateful he had already taken his sedative. He adjusted his suit sleeve to hide the device. “Do you intend to adopt them?”
Lin Junqing could not help but look at him. “Is that allowed?” He ate, lived, and used Xie Lin’s resources; if Xie Lin disliked cats, he would have no face to ask for such a favor.
A stray hair was sticking up on Lin Junqing’s head. Xie Lin reached out to pat it down, and seeing Lin Junqing’s startled expression, he quickly changed the subject. “Do you like cats?”
Lin Junqing’s attention was easily diverted. “They are fluffy little kittens; it is hard not to like them, is it not?” He knew what the internet said: tough guys and cats were a perfect match.
Realizing Lin Junqing’s interest lay in the kittens rather than Qing Ye, Xie Lin’s expression softened. The veterinarian looked at the two men and let out a knowing smile, enthusiastically turning to Xie Lin. “We have some supplies for kittens; would you like to take a look?” He could tell Xie Lin was the one paying. Judging by the watch on Xie Lin’s wrist, he knew the man was incredibly wealthy.
Xie Lin remained still until the vet added, “Pets can regulate one’s mood and foster emotional bonds between partners. A couple who once came here to adopt cats nearly broke up, but they decided to stay together for the sake of the kittens and are now married.”
Xie Lin had originally intended to have Chen Dong order the supplies, but hearing the vet’s words, he followed him inside. Lin Junqing hurried after him, whispering, “Mr. Xie, are you sure you want to adopt these three? Will it be a burden?”
Xie Lin looked at him gently. “How could palm-sized creatures be a burden? The garden is large; we can easily build them a house.” He was not adopting cats; he was adopting a tether for his relationship with Lin Junqing. Xie Lin signaled for the staff to pick only the most expensive supplies.
Watching Xie Lin spend over one hundred thousand yuan, Lin Junqing gasped; he had no idea pet care could be so expensive. Because they bought so much, the store arranged for home delivery and installation.
The mother cat passed away at eight that evening. Lin Junqing stood before the incubator for a long time after she took her final breath, having struggled to eat a final bit of canned meat. Seeing Lin Junqing so despondent, Xie Lin patted his shoulder and, seeing no resistance, ruffled his hair. “Do not be sad. You saved her children; she has no regrets.”
Lin Junqing sighed. “I am not sad, just struck by how fragile life is.”
Did Xie Lin just ruffle my hair? That felt like petting a dog.
Lin Junqing asked the system, “Why did Xie Lin ruffle my hair? He is not treating me like a pet, is he?”
The system was silent for a long time. “The Child of Destiny is showing signs of turning dark; nothing is strange. Wealthy people often have eccentricities. Perhaps he dislikes the messiness of animals and has decided to treat you as his pet instead.”
Lin Junqing felt a flash of anger. “That is an absurd guess, and you actually believe it? I am a living human being, not a pet.”
The system replied innocently, “But the existence of the Child of Destiny is absurd in itself. You do not understand them; their darkness takes many strange forms. Some want to destroy the world, others want to kill. It is not strange at all for Xie Lin to want a human pet. If he did not see you as one, why would he look at you that way? Look at how he stared at you earlier—like you were a piece of meat. He likes his pet very much; that is why he looks at you with such eyes.”
Fearing Lin Junqing would think he was making it up, the system displayed the photo of Xie Lin ruffling his hair. Lin Junqing stared at the image for a second. He could still feel the warmth and strength of Xie Lin’s hand, but he had not realized the expression on Xie Lin’s face had been so uninhibited. He struggled to find the right word; “lecherous” felt too harsh, and it would do a disservice to the expensive suit Xie Lin was wearing.
Lin Junqing followed Xie Lin, cradling the kittens while Xie Lin carried the mother cat’s body. He did not know how Xie Lin did it, but the cat was eventually given its own casket and burial plot. Upon returning to the villa, the kittens were handed over to the butler, who immediately assigned three maids to care for them—seven meals a day, consisting of top-tier, air-freighted nutritional food. Watching this, Lin Junqing could not help but drool with envy.
