- Chapter 20 - Recognizing Daddy
With the unified examinations scheduled for next week, most students chose to stay on campus over the weekend.
For the past two days, Lin Yan had been studying in Ning Youji’s dormitory. Under the combined tutelage of Ning Youji and the System, Lin Yan’s intelligence had reached a new tier. In the process of forging his intellect, the path of learning was gradually becoming clear to him.
The brain is the root of wisdom. Learning is the fountain that nourishes the brain.
While Ning Youji went to the cafeteria to buy dinner, the System popped up to report: “Current Free Points: 89. Should we add them or not?”
“Let’s wait and see,” Lin Yan replied.
“You’ve made rapid progress these past few days,” the System noted. “There will likely be temporary missions released during the unified exams.”
“Show me my intelligence panel,” Lin Yan commanded.
Focus: 79 Memory: 93 Observation: 62 Logic: 67 Imagination: 68 Learning Methods: 15 Free Points: 89 Total Intelligence: 458 (Mid-tier Intelligence) Development Level: 75%
Lin Yan looked at his total intelligence, his thoughts drifting. If he had possessed these scores back then, his parents and sister wouldn’t have… He shook his head. The past was in the past; he had to look forward.
Reading his thoughts, the System spoke in a softened tone: “The cruelty has only just begun. Your current ability is still too weak, Host. Our ultimate goal is 2000.”
Lin Yan knew this. With only a year and a half left, he had to fight for his life.
On the last day of the weekend, seeing that Ning Youji’s pheromones were well-contained, Lin Yan returned to his own mixed Beta/Omega dormitory building. The entire building was exclusive to B/O students, divided into doubles and singles; Lin Yan lived alone there as well.
He had barely sat down when Jiang Xue, as if sensing his return, burst into the room.
“Brother Lin!” Jiang Xue bellowed, lunging to hug him. “You’re finally back! I thought you didn’t want me anymore!”
Lin Yan extended a finger and pushed him back with a look of disgust. “Keep your hands to yourself. Speak properly.”
“Brother, you really don’t love me anymore,” Jiang Xue lamented. “Now that you have Brother Ning, you’ve abandoned us.”
Lin Yan didn’t bother entertaining him.
“Oh, right,” Jiang Xue said suddenly, pulling out his phone. “The Dongcheng forum is about to explode because of you!”
Lin Yan was baffled. He had only been gone a few days; how was it “exploding” again?
“I didn’t dare disturb you while you were at Brother Ning’s, but you’re famous even outside school now!” Jiang Xue scrolled through his phone. “Ah, found it! Look, the delinquents from High School Number 2 through Number 5 say they want to challenge you! They even want to be your ‘daddy’!”
“…”
Lin Yan took the phone. The first thing he saw was a cringey, juvenile forum title: [High School Number 1 Delinquent, Come Out and Recognize Your Daddy!]
Lin Yan finally realized how immature he had been in his past life. He used to talk big like this everywhere, which resulted in him “adopting” many “sons.” He promised himself he wouldn’t collect any more sons this time; it made him feel too old.
Jiang Xue was indignant. “They said your tutoring session at the old playground was just a publicity stunt. Brother, look how arrogant they are! They’re literally crapping on our doorstep. Brother, go get ’em!”
Lin Yan let out a long “oh” and clicked into the thread. Unsurprisingly, a challenge letter was pinned at the top. This was a tactic he used to use; it was incredibly low-class.
Scrolling down, the first top comment was from the leader of High School Number 2.
Number 2 Boss: It’s time for High School Number 1 to give up the usage rights to the entire East Street.
Number 3 Boss: Scared? Don’t dare to show up? If you have the guts, come out. Let’s have a real “adult” showdown!
Number 4 Boss: What kind of delinquent hides away? Let strength do the talking!
By “let strength do the talking,” it was obvious what these Alphas were planning. The boss of High School Number 5 remained silent; they were acquaintances who had crossed paths during that basketball game in the dark alley.
Lin Yan looked at the challenge letter and let out a strange laugh. They thought that because he had differentiated into an Omega, he had zero combat power. They wanted to use this chance for revenge, relying on the natural gap between Alpha and Omega to subdue him.
Heh.
Jiang Xue shuddered. It was over. Whenever the boss of High School Number 1 smiled like that, trouble followed!
Since Lin Yan became an Omega, his status at school had actually risen. His subordinates admired him even more than before. His strength went without saying, and his recent changes—his rapid academic improvement and rising aura—had left them stunned. Outsiders didn’t know this, but his followers felt nothing but pride.
The five schools were all on the same street. A year ago, the local bosses had fought to determine the hierarchy. Lin Yan had conquered High School Number 2 through Number 5. Back then, no one dared to say a word; anyone who spoke up got beaten.
Now that they heard he was an Omega, they wanted to act, but they still had lingering fears. Hearing that he hadn’t participated in the sports meet seemed to confirm their suspicions. An Omega naturally lacked the stamina of an Alpha.
Lin Yan restrained himself. He had promised to teach them and not “recognize sons,” so he replied:
[Lin Daddy]: You guys really want a rematch? But what should I do? I really don’t need any more sons.
The others seemed to be clutching their phones waiting for a reply. A response appeared almost instantly.
Number 2 Boss: It’s not decided yet who will be whose son!
A tiny Omega, let’s see how long you can stay arrogant.
Number 3 Boss: We won’t bully an Omega. We’ll go one-on-one.
Number 4 Boss: If you don’t accept, it counts as an automatic surrender. You’ll have to call us “Daddy” whenever you see us.
Number 5 Boss: I’m not participating. I’m only in Grade 10, I’m still young.
Number 2: Coward.
The Number 5 Boss: “…”
Ever since meeting Lin Yan in that dark alley, he had been terrified. That stamina and explosive power during the basketball game? A total beatdown! Plus, Lin Yan had even subdued his old rival, Lu Xiangshi. He wasn’t an idiot.
Lin Yan watched as they became more and more provocative. He bit his tongue.
[Lin Daddy]: The unified exams are coming up soon. Isn’t the timing too tight? If you get injured, you won’t be able to take the exam.
The bosses felt the scent of victory.
Number 2: Don’t tell me you actually want to take the exam. That excuse is pathetic. One word: accept or not!
Number 3: You’re a delinquent; don’t you know your own worth? What the hell is an “exam”?
Number 4: Stop making excuses. It’s embarrassing. Just surrender and call us “Daddy” already.
The Number 5 Boss watched them post, thinking to himself: You guys won’t even know how you died. He decided to remain a quiet spectator.
Lin Yan stared at the comments and the word “Daddy.” He closed his eyes. Finally, the “Chosen One” with a cheat-system could take it no longer. He couldn’t suffer this in silence. Having four more sons wouldn’t hurt.
[Lin Daddy]: Fine. Tomorrow afternoon, East Street Alley. If you lose, you kneel and call me Daddy.
Before they could even type a response, Lin Yan added:
“Be good, my sons. Daddy will show you lots of love tomorrow.”
That afternoon, Lin Yan left the cafeteria and headed toward the Alpha dormitories. The dorm supervisor of District A saw Lin Yan but simply lowered his head and continued his work. Even if he was an Omega, the Alphas in this building probably wouldn’t dare lay a hand on him; he was the one who laid hands on others.
Lin Yan pushed open the door to Ning Youji’s room and started rummaging through things. He knew those school bosses were up to no good and would definitely use their Alpha status to suppress him. He had to prepare in advance, and after thinking it over, he settled on Ning Youji.
Ning Youji was sitting at his desk working on problems. He watched, somewhat helpless, as Lin Yan burst in and began searching his room.
“What exactly are you looking for?” Ning Youji stopped writing and looked at him.
Lin Yan didn’t even acknowledge him. He walked over to the wardrobe and sniffed inside; the washed clothes didn’t have a strong Alpha pheromone scent. Suddenly, an idea struck him. His light eyes flickered, and he turned to size up Ning Youji.
It was late autumn. Ning Youji was dressed in black clothes and trousers, with blue pajamas underneath that looked vaguely familiar. Sitting at his desk, he gave off a lazy, homey vibe.
Lin Yan walked up to him, tugged at the black jacket he was wearing, and leaned in. He crinkled his nose; a light, clean woody fragrance, like a small bridge over flowing water, clean and warm. Lin Yan narrowed his eyes, his raspy voice sounding somewhat seductive.
“Take it off.”
“…”
Seeing him not move, Lin Yan urged him again: “Quick, take it off.”
His voice didn’t sound like it meant anything else; it was purely literal. Ning Youji locked eyes with him for a few seconds before asking in a calm, orderly voice: “Do you not have clothes?”
“Didn’t you say I could borrow it for a couple of days?” Lin Yan didn’t dare tell the truth, fearing Ning Youji would think he was being unproductive again and refuse to tutor him. He made up a random excuse: “My neck hurts. Just lend it to me for a day. I’ll give it back tomorrow.”
Without waiting for Ning Youji to speak, Lin Yan reached out to strip it off him. Lin Yan was used to being blunt; he had a bad temper but hated lying. Whenever he lied, his gaze would wander, so he didn’t dare linger too long with Ning Youji.
Ning Youji half-resisted and half-cooperated, letting the jacket be removed. Lin Yan took the clothes and sniffed them. The Alpha pheromones weren’t strong, but they would be enough to ward off other Alpha pheromones for a while.
“Thanks! I’ll give it back later,” Lin Yan threw over his shoulder as he bolted out of the room like he was fleeing a disaster. He knew Alphas were very particular about cleanliness and was afraid Ning Youji would change his mind.
Ning Youji faced the empty doorway and let out a silent laugh.
