- Chapter 11 - Marking is Effortless
The words whispered in his ear set Lin Yan’s entire body ablaze, making him feel as if the item in his hand were something scandalous.
After freezing for two seconds, Lin Yan gathered his composure and let a half-smile play on his lips. “What I use is none of your business. What’s wrong with mint? Don’t you know it feels refreshing?”
The moment the words left his mouth, Lin Yan bit his tongue. He realized he was talking nonsense. Panic-stricken, he grabbed a pack of scent-blocking patches and a bottle of neutralizer spray, then headed for the checkout counter without looking back.
Watching the retreating figure flee like a fugitive, Ning Youji chuckled.
After paying, Lin Yan opened the spray and spritzed himself, only to realize the scent was wrong. This fragrance was strangely familiar. He looked closely at the label: Sandalwood.
Seeing him stand still, Ning Youji stepped closer, and a woody scent wafted into his nose. His eyes flickered with amusement, and his voice carried a hint of a smile. “What? Do you like this scent?”
As Ning Youji approached, a woody fragrance—even more pleasant than the spray—enveloped them, making it feel as though the very air had transformed.
Lin Yan’s legs suddenly felt weak. Because his heat cycle had not fully passed, he was currently extremely dependent on that woody scent. If he did not control himself, he was afraid he might actually pounce. He leaned away, trying his best to restrain himself. When he spoke, his voice carried a tremor he did not even notice. “I will just use the patches.”
Then, he realized the patches were in Ning Youji’s hand. Ning Youji shook the item slightly. “I will help you.”
Lin Yan’s eyes widened in panic. “Ning Youji, believe it or not, if you take one more step, I will beat you until your own mother does not recognize you.”
Ning Youji continued to smile. “I believe you.” Having said that, he took a step forward right under Lin Yan’s nose. “But you will have to wait until you actually have the strength first.”
Lin Yan ground his teeth, his expression tense. Seeing his guarded look, the corners of Ning Youji’s mouth quirked upward. “If I wanted to do anything, I would have done it last night.” As he spoke, he took out a patch and moved behind Lin Yan.
“Marking you would be effortless.”
Ning Youji’s voice was not loud, but it stung Lin Yan’s ears. However, thinking about it, the guy was right. Yesterday, Lin Yan had even exposed his neck to him, and during the peak of his heat, he had practically offered himself up, yet Ning Youji had not done a thing.
An Omega in heat is a fatal temptation for an Alpha; any Alpha who can resist that is certainly not ordinary. Shifting his perspective, Lin Yan suddenly felt that Ning Youji was quite the gentleman. Coupled with his selfless tutoring, Lin Yan felt he had been overthinking things. His body gradually relaxed, and he cooperatively tilted his head down, exposing his entire nape.
Ning Youji froze. Looking at the fair neck completely exposed before him, bright and inviting, he could not help but reach out and brush his hand against it. The touch made Lin Yan feel itchy, and he shifted. “Hurry up and stick it on. Class is about to end.”
Ning Youji gave a soft acknowledgement, peeled the patch, and leaned in, staring at that patch of delicate, beautiful skin. Suddenly, the pharmacy door swung open. Three or four students in school uniforms walked in; they were students from High School Number 1. Class must have let out. The group stood at the entrance, frozen in shock.
The cashier had been watching the two boys for a while. Seeing the climax of the moment interrupted, she shouted grumpily at the door, “You brats, get out! We are closed for the day!”
The students did not budge. They looked at Lin Yan, then at the boy behind him. Their eyes drifted down to the spray in Lin Yan’s arms and the patches in Ning Youji’s hand. They turned to each other, eyes wide. Everything went without saying: seeing was believing. The school delinquent and the school idol’s romance was confirmed!
The group wanted to say something, but they were too excited to speak. Only one Alpha with slightly better composure managed to bow while stammering, “Please continue, carry on.” With that, he turned and bolted out of sight.
Lin Yan turned to look at Ning Youji, his face full of confusion. “What is wrong with them?”
Ning Youji lowered his gaze. Seeing Lin Yan’s bewildered expression, his lips curved slightly, and his breath brushed against Lin Yan’s ear. “Do you still want to put it on?”
Lin Yan’s ear felt weak. He turned away. “Yes, just do it quickly.”
After dallying all morning, it was past 11:00 AM by the time they returned to school, with only one class remaining. High School Number 1 was the best private school in Dongcheng and valued its college entrance rates immensely, meaning holidays were stripped down to the bare minimum. For National Day, the students only received a three-day break.
The two walked side-by-side from the school gate all the way into the Class 7, Grade 11 classroom. The moment they entered, the entire class’s gaze focused on them, watching as they sat down one after the other.
They had known a month ago that Lin Yan had manifested as an Omega, though some had been skeptical. But after seeing the photos on the forum ten minutes ago, combined with the fact that the two disappeared together yesterday and appeared together now—and the clear scent of pheromones on Lin Yan—they were thoroughly convinced.
Lin Yan scanned the room and, sensing something was off, kicked the chair in front of him. “Jiang Xue, what is going on?”
Jiang Xue turned around, looked at Lin Yan, then at Ning Youji. Steeling his nerves, he asked the question everyone wanted to know. “Brother Lin, are you in heat?”
Lin Yan was speechless. Beside him, Ning Youji’s brow furrowed, a flicker of irritation rising. “Can you smell it?”
Ning Youji’s voice was cold, carrying a natural, chilling pressure. Jiang Xue shrank back, but remembering how patient Ning Youji was with Lin Yan, he was not as afraid. “Well, not entirely. Low-level Alphas cannot smell it, but those who are even slightly higher-level can. Plus, we have Omegas in our class. Omega scents resonate with each other. The moment you entered the school, a lot of people knew.”
Ning Youji’s eyes turned sharp and cold. He realized the side effects of his Alpha blockers had kicked in. This medication was excellent, but it occasionally caused him to lose his sense of pheromones, though it happened rarely. He had been wondering how an Omega in heat could have their scent fade so quickly.
Lin Yan hated being gawked at. He clicked his tongue. “Stop looking. My heat is already over.”
Ning Youji, who had just reached for the neutralizer spray, paused. He heard Lin Yan continue without any filter: “Besides, I have already been comforted by an Alpha and taken suppressants. Do you guys have dog noses? How can you still smell it?”
The scent was indeed very faint; they were just making a big deal out of it. However, the protagonist was not just anyone; it was the school delinquent. Perhaps because he had become an Omega, they did not find him as scary anymore; in fact, he was almost cute. Soon, people started teasing him.
“Brother Lin, who was the Alpha that comforted you?” The boy who said this kept stealing glances at Ning Youji.
Lin Yan glared at him. The boy’s desk-mate quickly covered his mouth. “Shut up!”
Seeing that Lin Yan was not actually angry, the class started chatting all at once.
“Brother Lin, your scent is actually quite nice. It is lucky it is you; if it were anyone else, Alphas would be chasing them relentlessly.”
“Yeah! Even catching a whiff makes my heart race.”
“Brother Lin, did you use a blocker spray? You are making me afraid to even look you in the eye.”
Lin Yan snorted with a laugh. “Then try pouncing on me. See if I do not pin you to the ground and rub your face in the dirt.”
This small interlude allowed Lin Yan to fully integrate back into the class. The last period was self-study. Just as Lin Yan was about to return to his studies, Li Xingming in the front turned around. He sized Ning Youji up and frowned. “I saw those guys from Nancheng yesterday. Were they looking for trouble with you?”
Only then did Lin Yan notice the seating arrangements in class had changed. He tried his best to be a delinquent who loved both studying and gossip, holding his pen while his ears were practically twitching to eavesdrop.
Ning Youji looked up at Li Xingming, his voice cold. “Do not talk about that in school anymore.”
Seeing his nonchalant attitude, Li Xingming grew anxious for him. “But what if they mention your illness?”
Ning Youji lifted his eyelids and shot him a look. Li Xingming bit his lip and swallowed the rest of his words. Seeing them stop talking, Lin Yan immediately buried his head, pretending to work on a problem.
An illness? It must be the one the old doctor mentioned. From the corner of his eye, Ning Youji had long since noticed a certain curious Omega eavesdropping. That guilty yet inquisitive look made the tension in his heart vanish instantly.
The day before the National Day holiday, the Intelligence Test rankings were finally released. The rankings were posted on the campus network, and the entire eleventh grade was refreshing their phones. The news of the delinquent passing his last test had spread everywhere. Although the top scholar, Ning Youji, had cleared Lin Yan of cheating suspicions, some were still skeptical. After all, such a massive improvement in just one month was terrifying.
At 10:00 AM, the results went live. At the very top was a youth who seemed untouchable. Ning Youji, Total Intelligence: 1360. Second place was Ji Qing from Class 5 with a score of 870. Word was both of these powerhouses had transferred from Nancheng.
Lin Yan looked at Ning Youji’s score and clicked his tongue. Comparisons really are odious, but it fueled his motivation to climb higher. Since these were grade-wide rankings, finding the delinquent among over a thousand names was difficult. The students of Class 7 worked together, searching for Lin Yan’s name.
At 10:10 AM, someone finally cheered. “I found it!”
“Really? Quick, what is the rank?”
“If it is high, we can finally shut those big-mouthed idiots from other classes up!”
“Rank 537. Total Intelligence: 230.”
The classmates looked at each other with expressions of shock. Then, they all lowered their heads to refresh their phones simultaneously. Surely the school system had a glitch. They refreshed for a long time, but the result remained the same. The class turned as one to look at the back row by the window. It was not the school system that had a problem; it was their delinquent.
A strange silence lasted for several seconds. Then, the entire class exploded. The discussions were impossible to suppress.
“This is great! Those idiots outside have to shut up now. You can cheat on an exam, but you cannot cheat on an intelligence test!”
“Holy crap, what kind of learning ability does our boss have? This is terrifying!”
“Can I apply to join a study group with Ning Youji? I want to improve that fast too!”
“In your dreams! You are not an Omega, and even if you were, you do not smell as good as Brother Lin!”
“So it was the pheromones’ fault all along! Hahaha!”
The classroom was rowdy, with everyone praising how great or cool Lin Yan was. The atmosphere was thick with happy flattery. Lin Yan soaked up the praise; wasn’t the point of being a delinquent to be impressive? In this current climate, being a top student was more impressive than being a thug.
Just as Lin Yan was enjoying the vibe, a sound signaled in his mind. The system arrived with a special mission: “Advanced Mission Issued. Complete to receive 50 Free Points. Mission: Teach the math knowledge of this unit to your underlings. The number of people must be no less than 30. If the top scholar Ning Youji participates, you will receive an additional 10 Free Points. Let us swim together in the ocean of knowledge.”
Hearing Ning Youji’s name in a mission again, Lin Yan licked his teeth. He grumbled inwardly, “You are definitely working for Ning Youji, are you not?”
