- Chapter 30 - The Ship of Friendship Capsizes Just Like That
Seeing that he remained silent, Kou Huai asked nervously, “Qiuqiu, why aren’t you saying anything? Is this a difficult question to answer?”
Gu Qiuyi tapped away at his screen, typing back: “It feels impossible. He wouldn’t like me.”
Reading this response, Kou Huai felt a sense of foreboding. What did “he wouldn’t like me” mean? Did it imply that if Chu Yueguang did like him, Gu Qiuyi would…?
This line of thinking was dangerous. If Chu Yueguang showed interest and Gu Qiuyi immediately went with the flow, where would that leave him?
Kou Huai coughed a few times and decided to make an early move. He wasn’t a fool; he couldn’t actually wait an entire year. “Qiuqiu, I’m attending several cocktail parties and auctions during National Day. Are you interested in coming along to see the world?”
This truly piqued Gu Qiuyi’s interest. He had never seen such high-end social events. However, remembering something, he asked, “Sure! But can I bring Brother Hansa with me?”
Kou Huai: “?” “Why are you bringing him?”
Gu Qiuyi replied, “So you can show him the world too.”
Kou Huai: “…”
Kou Huai snapped, “Do you really see him as your father? Bringing him everywhere you go… You don’t actually have feelings for him, do you?”
Gu Qiuyi felt that Kou Huai was acting like a paranoid husband suspicious of his wife. The problem was, he wasn’t Kou Huai’s wife! Being blindly speculated about made him rather unhappy. “How is that possible? Brother Hansa is straight, okay!”
Kou Huai countered, “That’s not certain. Some straight men might just be deep in the closet.”
Gu Qiuyi argued, “Nonsense! Brother Hansa is a man of steel and definitely straight. He couldn’t possibly be in the closet.”
“I was just speaking casually,” Kou Huai said. “Why are you getting so defensive? Fine, if you want to bring him, bring him.”
Gu Qiuyi said happily, “Thank you, Brother Kou Huai!”
Kou Huai grumbled, “You really are something. Is wanting some time alone with you too much to ask?”
Gu Qiuyi replied, “The more the merrier!”
Kou Huai: “?” The more the merrier? You’ve really got a way with words.
Perhaps he was still too young and lacked that particular romantic “nerve”?
Kou Huai instructed, “Measure your sizes. I’ll prepare the clothes for you.” He paused and added, “Forget it, I’ll send someone over to measure you.”
Gu Qiuyi said, “Great! Measure Brother Hansa at the same time.”
Kou Huai: “?” “Does he need me to prepare clothes for him too?”
Gu Qiuyi said, “He’s poor! All his money is spent on me, sob sob sob.”
Kou Huai: “…………” “Impressive. Truly impressive.”
Gu Qiuyi asked, “Brother Kou Huai? You’ll help us both prepare clothes, right? We’re both really poor, sob.”
Kou Huai couldn’t help but marvel at his own patience. “Fine, I’ll prepare a set for both of you.”
He couldn’t resist adding, “You two certainly are close.”
His tone was dripping with jealousy.
Gu Qiuyi didn’t notice. Instead, he began praising Jiang Hansa. “Yeah, after all, he covers my three meals and daily expenses. Sob, he really is a good person.”
Kou Huai: “…”
Kou Huai immediately turned around to find Jiang Hansa: “Hansa, I heard about you from Qiuqiu. You’re really good to him.”
Jiang Hansa: “…”
He could naturally hear the sarcasm in those words. Feeling guilty yet cautious, he replied, “We’re just classmates.”
Kou Huai said, “You don’t look like ‘just classmates’ to me. Hansa, you know how I feel about Qiuqiu, right?”
Jiang Hansa: “…I know.”
Kou Huai said, “It’s the first time I’ve liked someone this much. I’ve stopped dating others just to wait for him to start university.”
Jiang Hansa: “…” Help! Why are you telling me this? I’m a straight, masculine man! Does this guy actually think I’m his love rival?
Kou Huai didn’t hide his intentions. “You won’t try to take him from me, right?”
Jiang Hansa: “…I really am straight!”
There was a hint of helplessness in his voice. Even if Gu Qiuyi was incredibly good-looking, if he wasn’t a girl, it just wouldn’t work! Did these gay men think there was no such thing as pure friendship between men?
It was ridiculous.
Kou Huai said, “I’ll only believe you if you swear a deadly oath.”
Jiang Hansa: “…” You’re sick!
Jiang Hansa’s expression contorted. “I swear, if I ever like Gu Qiuyi, I am lower than a pig or a dog.”
Kou Huai said, “That’s not a deadly oath. I’ll teach you. You have to say: if I ever like Gu Qiuyi, my junk will rot off.”
Jiang Hansa: “…” How… how vicious.
To show his determination, Jiang Hansa had no choice but to repeat it.
Satisfied, Kou Huai said hypocritically, “I believe you are a good straight man.”
Jiang Hansa on the surface: “Hahahaha.” Jiang Hansa internally: Screw you.
Anyone associated with Gu Qiuyi really wasn’t normal.
After finishing breakfast, Gu Qiuyi brought a bag of donuts for Xu Muqing. Although Jiang Hansa “covered his three meals,” Xu Muqing still handled his own food most of the time.
On the way back to the classroom, Jiang Hansa noticed Gu Qiuyi’s school uniform looked short. Glancing at the top of his head, he said in a daze, “Gu Qiuyi, did you grow taller?”
Gu Qiuyi asked in surprise, “I grew taller?”
Jiang Hansa pulled him to a stop and gestured with his palm. Gu Qiuyi’s head now reached exactly to the level of his eyes. “You definitely grew. You weren’t this tall before.”
Gu Qiuyi asked, “How tall am I now?”
Jiang Hansa estimated, “Probably around 176 cm.”
Gu Qiuyi: “Sob, only grew two centimeters.”
Jiang Hansa looked at his uniform and gave it a tug. “Is this your tenth-grade uniform? How tall were you back then?”
Gu Qiuyi said, “I was 172 cm then.”
Jiang Hansa said, “You’ve been wearing one set of clothes for three years? Go find Teacher Liu later to buy a new set.”
Gu Qiuyi hummed in agreement.
When they returned to the classroom, Xu Muqing was already in his seat. A girl had gone over to ask him a question. He was explaining it to her in a steady, gentle tone, unaware that the girl’s gaze was fixed on his face. It wasn’t until he asked, “Do you understand?” that the girl blushed and said, “I understand, thank you.”
Xu Muqing asked, “Is there anything else you don’t understand?”
The girl said, “Th-there is.” She seemed flustered but quickly pointed to another problem. “I don’t understand this one.”
Xu Muqing glanced at it and said, “The teacher just explained a similar example yesterday. Did you not understand it then?”
His tone was gentle, so it didn’t feel uncomfortable or offensive. The girl nodded. “I didn’t really get it yesterday.”
Xu Muqing continued to explain the problem in that soft voice. As he began, he noticed Gu Qiuyi arriving. He looked up and said to the girl, “Please stand up.”
The girl saw Gu Qiuyi and quickly stood up, returning the seat to him.
Xu Muqing also stood up and said to Gu Qiuyi, “Sit in my spot first. I’ll finish explaining this to her.”
Gu Qiuyi agreed, bypassed Xu Muqing, and sat in his seat. Xu Muqing sat on the end near the aisle to continue teaching the girl.
Listening to his refined voice, Gu Qiuyi yawned. His gaze fell into Xu Muqing’s desk drawer. He couldn’t help but peek inside. Unlike his own messy style of stuffing crumpled papers everywhere, Xu Muqing’s desk was spotless. The books were arranged with extreme precision. Gu Qiuyi thought to himself: As expected of the male lead.
After the girl left, Xu Muqing looked at Gu Qiuyi and said, “Let’s swap back.”
Gu Qiuyi agreed. Seeing Xu Muqing sitting still, he stood up first and pushed the desk forward. “You come in first.”
Xu Muqing sat on the inside, and Gu Qiuyi moved his desk back, finishing the swap quickly.
Xu Muqing looked at him, but Gu Qiuyi didn’t notice. After sitting down, Gu Qiuyi remarked casually, “Brother Muqing, you’re really popular. People come to ask you questions every day.”
Xu Muqing gave a simple “Mm.”
Gu Qiuyi added, “But it’s strange. Wasn’t that girl just now the math class representative? Why would she come to ask you math questions?”
Xu Muqing flipped a page casually and said in a very light, soft voice: “A waste of time.”
Gu Qiuyi: “?”
He suspected he had misheard and turned his gaze toward him. “Brother Muqing, what did you just say?”
Xu Muqing met his eyes and said gently, “They clearly understand it, yet they still come to ask me. Isn’t that a waste of time?”
Gu Qiuyi: “Uh… true.”
Looking at his blank face, Xu Muqing said, “Memorize your text.”
Gu Qiuyi said timidly, “O-okay.”
He felt the sense of strangeness surrounding Xu Muqing was growing stronger. How odd.
After school let out at noon, Gu Qiuyi was still a bit preoccupied. He couldn’t resist messaging Jiang Hansa on WeChat: “Brother Hansa, what do you think of Brother Muqing?”
Jiang Hansa: “?” “What do you mean ‘what do I think’? Isn’t he quite nice?”
Gu Qiuyi said, “But I always feel like he’s a bit strange.”
Jiang Hansa: “Strange how?”
Gu Qiuyi told him about what happened that morning. Jiang Hansa was dismissive. “It is a waste of time. They clearly know the answers; they just ask stupid questions to talk to Xu Muqing. If it were me, I’d be annoyed too. You can’t expect Xu Muqing to be a saint.”
Gu Qiuyi: “…Fair point.”
But then he called Jiang Hansa out: “Brother Hansa, people often ask you questions too, but I’ve never seen you get annoyed.”
Jiang Hansa: “Uh.”
Gu Qiuyi said, “Why aren’t you talking? Feeling guilty?”
Jiang Hansa: “What do I have to feel guilty about?”
Gu Qiuyi said, “Brother Hansa is becoming more and more ‘real’ in front of me. You’ll be fierce or throw little tantrums. But in front of others, you’re still putting on an act.”
Jiang Hansa: “…”
He couldn’t help but swallow hard. “What do you mean by that?”
Gu Qiuyi said, “Actually, I knew from the start that you wanted to use me. That’s why I treated you that way in the beginning.”
Jiang Hansa: “…” His throat felt dry. “You knew from the start?”
Gu Qiuyi said, “Of course. My presence was so low back then, yet you were so enthusiastic. Anyone would suspect your motives, right?”
Jiang Hansa: “Then why did you stay with me?”
Gu Qiuyi said, “Oh, please. You wanted to use me, and I wanted free food and drinks. It was a fair trade! But now, I really consider you a friend, and you consider me one too, right?”
Jiang Hansa: “Of course!”
Gu Qiuyi couldn’t help but laugh. “Brother Hansa, it’s fine to just be yourself. You don’t need a mask. If you’re unhappy, just express it.”
Jiang Hansa: “…If I express my unhappiness, you’ll just say I’m being mean to you.”
Gu Qiuyi said seriously, “Well, that won’t do. You aren’t allowed to be mean to me.”
Jiang Hansa: “…”
Gu Qiuyi said, “Then you’d better keep the mask on. I like the old Brother Hansa—no matter what I said, he wouldn’t get angry. At most, his face would twitch as if he wanted to hit me but didn’t dare.”
Jiang Hansa felt a bit embarrassed: “Screw you.”
This guy had seen all of his undignified moments from the very beginning.
