Chapter 31: Forming a Team
Bai Qing looked at Xiang Zhuo with a face full of surprise. Xiang Zhuo felt that with two specialty cocktails in his stomach, he was slightly out of control. He gently pushed a glass of wine to the center between them: “Have a taste.”
Bai Qing: “If I drink outside, my father told me I need to inform him, and he will pick me up after dinner. But I don’t want to trouble him, so I won’t drink.”
Xiang Zhuo’s brain was working very slowly: “I know you’ve had dinner here with other Alphas, but I promise you, I’m different from them.”
Bai Qing didn’t quite grasp Xiang Zhuo’s meaning: “How are you different?”
Xiang Zhuo’s eyes were slightly red: “I’m genuinely serious. I will always put you first in my heart, and I will never let you down.”
The engagement can be remade, and I’m willing to be laughed at by everyone.
Xiang Zhuo secretly added this in his heart, not daring to speak it out loud.
Bai Qing put down his knife and fork: “My father told me that if someone says this kind of thing to me, he hopes to have a communication with them, or he would come over and talk to you.”
Xiang Zhuo, emboldened by the alcohol and fearing nothing, immediately pulled out his communication terminal, found Bai Jinfeng’s number, and dialed it instantly.
Bai Qing: “…” His hand, intended to stop him, only managed to stretch out and hover in the air. His slender, beautiful fingers slowly curled in mid-air…
This was truly unexpected.
The call connected on the other end, and Xiang Zhuo immediately spoke: “Hello, Uncle. I am Xiang Zhuo.”
Bai Jinfeng: “Your Highness, what is the matter?”
“It’s a bit presumptuous to call you, but I want to tell you something. I have truly taken Bai Qing to heart. I want to treat him well forever, and I want to re-engage with him. Would you consider evaluating me?”
Upon hearing this, Bai Jinfeng stood up and slammed his hand on the table: “You brat, are you playing games with me?”
Hearing the fierce reaction from the other side, Xiang Zhuo instantly sobered up.
He looked up and saw Bai Qing’s indifferent expression, and his heart immediately sank.
He seemed to have regained his reason, and he respectfully spoke to the other end of the communication: “I apologize, Uncle. I drank a bit just now and was offensive to you and Bai Qing. I will certainly come to apologize in person when I have time.”
Seeing Xiang Zhuo’s softened attitude, Bai Jinfeng didn’t press further, only saying a few more words like, “Say that again and I’ll break your legs,” “Our Qingqing is not a plaything you can summon and dismiss at will,” and “You better get lost and stay far away from my son,” showing no respect for the Imperial Crown Prince.
Bai Jinfeng was genuinely unafraid. This brat had bullied Bai Qing to such an extent; the old father truly couldn’t tolerate it anymore.
Xiang Zhuo didn’t dare breathe, agreeing repeatedly until he hung up the communication, at which point he felt alive again.
Xiang Zhuo looked up with a heavy heart, somewhat afraid to meet Bai Qing’s gaze: “I’m sorry. My mind wasn’t clear just now.”
Bai Qing looked at him for a moment: “It’s fine, as long as you don’t say this indiscriminately to others.”
Xiang Zhuo’s mind was in a mess. Now sober, he dared not say or do anything more.
Both of them were full. Coincidentally, all the ordered dishes were finished, and one glass of wine remained, which Xiang Zhuo absolutely dared not drink.
Bai Qing took out an exquisite small box from his pocket and pushed it toward Xiang Zhuo.
Xiang Zhuo asked in surprise: “What is this?”
Bai Qing: “A thank you gift. I hope you like it.”
Xiang Zhuo was full of pleasant surprise. He carefully opened the box and found a pendant inside—a long silver chain with a majestic and handsome small dog hanging from it.
It was carved from an unknown material, very lifelike. Every single strand of the dog’s fur could be seen. Xiang Zhuo couldn’t help but gently rub it. It wasn’t fuzzy but cold, like metal.
Xiang Zhuo smiled and immediately put the small dog necklace around his neck, removing the skull: “How did you know I was recently researching small animals unique to the era of Ancient Blue Star? I truly love this.”
Light shone in Bai Qing’s eyes: “I did some research. This species is indeed extinct, and it became extinct very early. It’s a creature that only existed during the Ancient Blue Star era, called the German Shepherd. It’s a very handsome breed of dog. Current breeds only have half of the German Shepherd bloodline.”
Its characteristics are bravery, intelligence, and absolute loyalty.
…
It was time for the two to leave.
Bai Jinfeng was already waiting at the entrance of Jin Lu to pick up Bai Qing. When they parted, Bai Jinfeng stared at Xiang Zhuo with a vigilant expression. Xiang Zhuo apologized profusely and even completed a ninety-degree bow of apology before Bai Jinfeng finally let him go and took Bai Qing away.
Xiang Zhuo sat on his motorcycle, covering his face in distress.
What did I even do today…
The German Shepherd necklace swayed in front of his eyes. He grasped it with one hand, warming the cold metal with his body temperature.
But fortunately…
It wasn’t a total loss. Just now, Bai Qing agreed to team up with him for the wilderness training drill.
…
After his period of reflection ended, Xiang Zhuo returned to the academy for regular classes.
Early in the morning, Xiang Zhuo ran into Jing Yu at the academy gate. A smile played on his lips, and he puffed out his chest as he approached: “You’re here so early today?”
Jing Yu immediately noticed the necklace around Xiang Zhuo’s neck and chose to be selectively blind: “Early? I’m always here at this time.”
Xiang Zhuo puffed out his chest a little more: “This is my first day back in class. Don’t you have anything to say to me?”
Jing Yu: “Congratulations on plunging back into the sea of bitterness.”
Xiang Zhuo: “Do you know how many species of animals from the Ancient Blue Star era have gone extinct since we entered the Interstellar Age?”
Jing Yu wasn’t concerned with species diversity, only finding the man’s showing off annoying: “How many? Is that dog around your neck one of them?”
Xiang Zhuo smiled: “Yes, Bai Qing gave it to me. He knew I was interested in these things lately. What do you think? A German Shepherd. Not bad, right?”
Jing Yu: “…” Who asked you?
Jing Yu delivered a direct, critical hit without mercy: “Oh, well, since he gave you a gift, you two must not just be ordinary classmates, right? Has the relationship progressed further?”
Xiang Zhuo: “…” Defense breached.
Jing Yu walked to class with a victorious smile.
Xiang Zhuo, meanwhile, headed straight for the assembly point.
Coincidentally, Xiang Zhuo’s first day back coincided with the departure day for their wilderness training drill.
The wilderness training drill, as the name suggests, was a course organized by the National Defense Military Academy for mecha combat students to survive in the wilderness for two weeks and complete a series of training and missions.
Mecha piloting was prohibited during the drill to train students’ physical fitness, temper their mental power, and test their close-quarters combat and martial arts skills.
When mental power reaches S-level or above, it can directly interfere with physical objects. If the mental power is sufficiently solidified, like Xiang Zhuo steadying the glass of water, it can range from assisting in daily life to saving lives on the battlefield.
However, solidifying mental power consumes a huge amount of energy, so it is generally not recommended.
The wilderness drill allowed free team formation, 3-4 people per group. As long as they completed the stipulated training and the final objective mission, the training would be deemed complete, and they could return to the academy.
Xiang Zhuo felt this presented absolutely no difficulty, considering it merely a change of scenery.
He waited for a while before Bai Qing and Ye Sheng finally managed to break through layers of surrounding people and walked toward him.
Since Bai Qing’s identity was exposed, the Alphas at the National Defense Military Academy had completely stirred up. “The Empire’s First Omega” was originally a sarcastic nickname for Bai Qing, but after Bai Qing proved his strength and attractiveness, everyone shut up, some even vaguely feeling that he was the one who deserved the title.
Many Alphas had sent team-up invitations to Bai Qing for this drill, but Bai Qing had rejected them all, citing that his team was already formed and full.
Learning of this, Xiang Zhuo was inwardly grateful that he had spoken early.
As soon as the team members were all present, they could board the small airship first and head for the Giant Forest Island.
Giant Forest Island is located on the outermost edge of the Hela Star system, sparsely populated, and is a rare no-man’s-land on the Capital Star. It has neither abundant resources nor mineral deposits. It’s an extremely primitive island with no traces of human development and no meaning for exploitation. It contains vast tracts of primeval forest and is home to many wild, fierce beasts. The island’s small size makes development too low on the cost-effectiveness scale, but it is perfectly suited as a training ground for the Military Academy’s wilderness drill.
The airship’s route was fixed. Once aboard, there was no need for any operation, and they could rest well. After all, the critical life-or-death period was about to begin.
Every year, a few students would lose their lives and fail to return from the National Defense Military Academy’s wilderness drill. The survival environment on Giant Forest Island was undoubtedly harsh.
Bai Qing stood by the window, silently watching the rapidly retreating scenery.
For some reason, he felt a constant bad premonition—a sense of unease and irritation that something major was about to happen.
Ye Sheng saw Bai Qing’s silence and cleared his throat to lighten the mood: “Qingqing, why don’t you sit down and rest? We probably won’t have time to rest once we land. For the next two weeks, we might even have to take turns sleeping.”
Bai Qing: “It’s fine. My physical stamina isn’t strong, so I should train more. I hope I won’t hold you guys back then.”
Ye Sheng opened a bottle of soda: “Who dares to complain about you? I’ll beat them up. Right, Your Highness?”
Xiang Zhuo propped his head up, shifted his gaze from Bai Qing’s back to Ye Sheng, and a malicious light flickered in his black pupils: “I heard Classmate Ye stopped at the second stage of the second round in the Mecha Battle Competition. I’ll take the liberty of doing the beating.”
Ye Sheng: “…”
He’s so angry, he’s laughing.
