Chapter 29: The Adjunct
Qi Siyu’s condition was not very optimistic.
Xiang Zhuo indeed acted with great measure, deliberately targeting areas where the pain would be very obvious but the injuries would be difficult to show.
Qi Siyu was in too much pain to move, but to the naked eye, he seemed to have only suffered minor contusions.
The doctor in charge of his examination shook his head repeatedly. These injuries wouldn’t heal for at least a month.
But given that this was a campus brawl, the incident had a negative impact. While Meng Yunting was preoccupied with handling the matter of Qi Zhiyuan and his son, he still had to spare time to summon Xiang Zhuo for a talk.
Xiang Zhuo, for his part, was willing to face the consequences and didn’t offer any excuses for himself. The only reason he gave was that he “had been finding Qi Siyu displeasing for a long time.”
Meng Yunting was so troubled he didn’t even drink his tea: “Your Highness, why couldn’t you find any other time to find him displeasing? Why now? And judging by Qi Siyu’s injury report, your hand was far from light. Just because the official documents for handling the father and son haven’t been released, it doesn’t mean I won’t deal with them. You making a move now makes things difficult.”
Xiang Zhuo smiled: “Deal with me however you deem fit, of course. But you must also deal with him accordingly. Otherwise, I can’t guarantee when I might find him displeasing again.”
Meng Yunting repeatedly waved his hands: “Go, go. Don’t come to class for this week.” Annoying.
Xiang Zhuo smiled, pushed the door open, and left.
Meng Yunting’s efficiency was indeed high. Although the National Defense Military Academy was large, before Xiang Zhuo could even reach the classroom, two separate official documents—one dealing with Qi Zhiyuan and his son, and another with Xiang Zhuo—were released via intelligent guide to every student and faculty member.
Xiang Zhuo paused. He opened the notification on his intelligent guide.
Meng Yunting issued him a punishment of one week of solitary reflection at home. Qi Zhiyuan and his son were not so lucky. Qi Zhiyuan was immediately dismissed from his post and handed over to the Eternal Empire’s Supreme Court for handling; exactly how many years he would spend in prison was the court’s business. As for Qi Siyu, due to posting clearly inflammatory and completely fabricated content on a public platform like the academy forum, which had a very negative impact, he was suspended for one year and prohibited from returning to the academy for any activities.
After reading both announcements, Xiang Zhuo walked toward the classroom in high spirits.
His belongings were still in the morning class classroom, and he needed to go back to retrieve them.
…
Bai Qing was uncharacteristically distracted in class. He was checking the latest messages received on his intelligent guide.
Xiang Zhuo was penalized with one week of reflection for fighting, and Qi Siyu was suspended for one year, prohibited from returning to the academy for any activities.
However, the National Defense Military Academy had a special regulation: any student with academy enrollment status would have their status revoked permanently if they continuously failed to participate in any recorded academy activities for one year.
In other words, after Qi Siyu’s one-year suspension, he would automatically drop out, and no other school would dare accept a student with such a tainted record.
Bai Qing felt a rare sense of relief surge from the bottom of his heart.
He happened to turn his head and look out at the corridor. The golden sunlight pierced through the tree canopy outside the path, casting dappled shadows on the young man standing outside the classroom.
Noticing that Bai Qing’s eyes had met his, Xiang Zhuo immediately broke into a smile. For a moment, the sunlight outside the corridor seemed to dim in comparison.
Bai Qing nodded faintly at him.
Xiang Zhuo subtly tapped his wrist, signaling Bai Qing to look at his communication terminal.
Bai Qing looked down and saw that Xiang Zhuo had sent him a photo.
The composition of the photo was stunning. Large patches of sunlight poured in, like light piercing through layers of clouds, completely enveloping the person in the center of the photo.
This person had beautiful silver hair and lake-blue eyes like two peaceful pools of water. All the surrounding people, objects, and scenery were merely backdrops.
Finishing this photo made one’s mood feel surprisingly calm.
Bai Qing’s mouth curved upward by two pixels.
What he didn’t know was that Xiang Zhuo, still standing by the doorway, precisely captured this upward curve of Bai Qing’s lips, took a photo of it, and set it as the background image for his communication terminal’s main interface for many years to come.
Ye Sheng noticed Bai Qing’s happiness and leaned in, curiously observing him: “Why are you suddenly so happy? Did something good happen?”
Bai Qing glanced out of the corner of his eye, saw that Xiang Zhuo had left, and casually put off Ye Sheng: “Qi Siyu is automatically dropping out.”
Ye Sheng also cheered up, lowering his voice: “That’s fantastic! Evil people get what they deserve. Should we go celebrate tonight?”
Bai Qing shook his head: “Maybe not. I still have training tonight.”
Ye Sheng gnashed his teeth, wanting to challenge a dedicated genius like Bai Qing. How were others supposed to live when someone so talented was also so diligent!
…
When Bai Qing returned home, the first thing he did was confirm the date, dining time, and number of people with Jin Lu. After receiving a positive confirmation, Bai Qing pulled up Xiang Zhuo’s chat interface, deliberated for a long time, and finally composed this message:
【BaiShu】: Weekend evening, 6:30 PM, meet at Jin Lu.
He waited for a little while and didn’t receive a reply from Xiang Zhuo. Bai Qing didn’t think much of it and started his training according to his routine.
On the other side, Xiang Zhuo had just finished a satisfying close-quarters combat session with the training mecha. Recently, in preparation for the mid-term assessment, his training in close combat had lagged a bit. Since he returned home early today, it was the perfect time to catch up.
When he emerged after showering, he was steaming with heat. Since he was alone at home, he was only hastily wrapped in a bath towel. His muscular arms casually ran through his damp hair a few times. Droplets of water falling from his hair trailed down the grooves of his abs, eventually disappearing behind the towel.
Xiang Zhuo suddenly seemed to remember something. He woke up the communication terminal on his wrist, and after only a quick scan, he was instantly stunned.
The sky had fallen!
“One hour and fifty minutes ago”
【BaiShu】: Weekend evening, 6:30 PM, meet at Jin Lu.
One hour and fifty minutes!!!
Xiang Zhuo visibly panicked. He reread the single sentence repeatedly. Even if he burned a hole through the communication terminal’s virtual screen, it wouldn’t change the fact that the message was sent one hour and fifty minutes ago.
Xiang Zhuo anxiously scratched his head, his heart pounding as he hesitantly sent a reply:
【FireBlaze】: That works for me. See you this weekend evening then.
Xiang Zhuo’s heart remained suspended. He waited for ten minutes, but no message came through. His heart was racing. Anxiously, he sent another message to Bai Qing.
【FireBlaze】: Sorry, I was training just now and didn’t notice the message. I didn’t ignore you on purpose.
Another ten minutes passed. There was still no movement from the other side.
Xiang Zhuo was panicking uncontrollably. He endlessly refreshed the chat window with Bai Qing but still couldn’t get any update. Xiang Zhuo buried his head in the soft sofa pillow and sent a heartbroken message:
【FireBlaze】: “Are you angry?”
“I’m truly sorry. I really didn’t ignore your message on purpose. I was training and then took a shower. My communication terminal was set to sleep. I’m truly sorry.”
“I hope you’re not angry anymore. Anger is bad for your health.”
“I’ve set you as a ‘Special Focus’ across all my devices. That way, as long as I’m alive and can still see, I will always receive your messages.”
“Are you still angry? Please reply. You can even scold me.”
…
Xiang Zhuo couldn’t focus on anything all evening, trapped in deep torment. Finally, he gritted his teeth and made up his mind…
【FireBlaze】: Wait for me a moment. I’m coming to find you. We’ll talk in person.
…
【FireBlaze】: Open the door. I’m outside your house.
As soon as Bai Qing got off the Artemis test machine, he saw his communication terminal, which looked like it had been bombed.
Xiang Zhuo had been talking to himself for two hours!
And it had been half an hour since the last message, “Open the door. I’m outside your house.”
Bai Qing’s heart contracted. He only had time to change out of his combat uniform, grab a T-shirt, and rush to open the door.
Bai Qing lived in a detached villa. As soon as he stepped out, he saw the young man standing alone outside the fence.
Hearing the movement, Xiang Zhuo looked up in surprise. As soon as he saw Bai Qing, the eyes that had been tinged with loneliness immediately lit up.
Bai Qing was lightly dressed—a T-shirt and shorts. His straight, pale legs were enveloped in moonlight, casting long, slender shadows on the ground like bamboo silhouettes. But Xiang Zhuo noticed a faint pink scar on Bai Qing’s right ankle. Xiang Zhuo watched Bai Qing walk towards him step by step, his heart fluttering. His original knot of anxiety instantly dissolved.
Waiting this long was all worth it.
Bai Qing pulled the door open and invited Xiang Zhuo in: “Sorry, I just finished training and only saw your messages. Is something wrong?”
Xiang Zhuo looked at Bai Qing fixedly. In the dark night, his eyes were exceptionally bright: “It’s cold now. Coming out right after training, you might catch a cold.”
Bai Qing gave Xiang Zhuo a puzzled look. He raised a hand to touch his forehead and found he was indeed drenched in sweat. He quietly murmured his thanks and looked back at Xiang Zhuo: “Is there anything else?”
Xiang Zhuo desperately restrained the urge to ruffle Bai Qing’s hair. He smiled: “Nothing else. I just came to tell you that I’m free at six-thirty on Saturday evening. Go back inside. Go to bed early.”
Bai Qing nodded slowly: “You should also go to bed early tonight.”
Xiang Zhuo: “Okay.”
After watching Xiang Zhuo leave, Bai Qing returned to his room. He finally had time to open Xiang Zhuo’s chat box and slowly scrolled up, witnessing the entire process of Xiang Zhuo’s gradual breakdown…
Bai Qing: “…”
Does this Xiang Zhuo guy have some kind of problem?
