- Chapter 88 - Breaking Down the Door
Whenever Xu Chengjin recalled herself in those dreams, she felt a chill of revulsion. Her “death” had been tragic; essentially, every time she remembered that scene, she felt it was a lingering nightmare she couldn’t escape.
“Me?”
Si Yu blinked. She was a bit dazed, or rather, she simply didn’t want to believe it: “I hurt you?”
She had actually “driven Xu Chengjin to death”? Yet, she didn’t feel that what Xu Chengjin said was a lie. But how was that possible?
“So, you’ve been avoiding me all this time?” After Si Yu spoke, she felt something was off. She lowered her head and whispered to herself, “Then, did you agree to be with me only because you were afraid of that happening again?”
Xu Chengjin didn’t deny it, but simply shifted the topic: “Don’t you think I’m talking nonsense?”
“No!”
Si Yu denied it immediately. She spoke very quickly, fearing the other woman would misunderstand: “I believe what you say. And please, believe me too, okay? I won’t hurt you.”
“Of course I believe you. Moreover, I feel that my fate has already changed, even though I’m still afraid…”
Xu Chengjin’s tone was normal, but Si Yu could still sense the weariness in her words. Sadness flashed in Si Yu’s eyes: “Mm, don’t be afraid.”
“You go rest first; I’ll go cook.”
Si Yu left hurriedly after saying this. She was in a state of panic now, unsure for a moment how to face Xu Chengjin. It turned out she had been the villain in the other’s youthful dreams for so many years.
What about now?
Was this hypocrisy after testing the waters, or sincere treatment?
Xu Chengjin might still have things she hadn’t told her, but it didn’t matter anymore… At any rate, Xu Chengjin was willing to be with her now. Even if it wasn’t sincere, it didn’t matter.
On the other side, Xu Chengjin had no idea that Si Yu had spiraled into a dead end. She felt that the two of them had finally talked things through and the secret hidden in her heart had vanished. This was a good thing; Si Yu was the only person who knew her secret, making their relationship even closer.
Xu Chengjin’s reason for revealing this was simple: she felt Si Yu was very insecure. She wanted to tell her that—even though she had once been so afraid of Si Yu—she had still firmly chosen her now.
However, she never expected Si Yu to instinctively belittle herself. This was completely contrary to Xu Chengjin’s way of thinking; after all, Si Yu was wealthy and ambitious—she had everything. Logically, she shouldn’t be like this.
“Xiaojin, get up and eat.”
Si Yu pushed open the bedroom door and found that Xu Chengjin had kicked off all the blankets. The corners of her lips curled upward slightly, and she immediately wrapped the person up in the quilt. She lowered her voice: “Time to get up.”
Xu Chengjin had slept quite well. She opened her eyes dizzily, and upon realizing it was Si Yu, she instinctively frowned. Without saying a word, she pulled the quilt back over herself: “I want to sleep.”
“Grumpy after a nap?”
Si Yu didn’t intend to let Xu Chengjin keep sleeping, otherwise she would have a headache later. She scooped the person out of the quilt and carried her straight out. Xu Chengjin was too light; sometimes Si Yu feared she might use too much force and break her.
Xu Chengjin was like a porcelain doll—not just in her looks, but her body as well.
She still needed to be nursed back to health.
“I have soup simmering in the pot. Drink a bowl before we go to the banquet this afternoon. For lunch, I just made three simple dishes—two meat and one vegetable. I didn’t use much oil; why don’t you try them?”
“Okay.”
By the time Xu Chengjin sat in the chair, she was much more awake. She picked up her chopsticks and tried a bite: “It’s delicious!”
“I’m glad you like it.”
Si Yu placed quite a bit of food into Xu Chengjin’s bowl: “Eat slowly. If it’s inconvenient, should I get you a spoon?”
“Yes, please.”
Xu Chengjin didn’t have any particular resistance toward her blindness. She took the spoon and began to eat. Since she hadn’t eaten anything from morning until now, she was indeed hungry: “Your cooking has improved.”
“As long as you like it.” The smile on Si Yu’s face couldn’t be suppressed. She pressed her lips together and then said, “I have a meeting at the company this afternoon. I’ll be back as soon as it’s over.”
Xu Chengjin gave an “oh”: “Okay, I’ll call you if anything happens.”
“Alright.”
There was no trace of anything unusual in Si Yu’s tone. She watched Xu Chengjin finish her lunch, the smile never leaving her face: “I’ll go get your medicine.”
She brought out the Chinese medicine that had cooled to a lukewarm temperature: “When the doctor comes this afternoon, just open the door. Don’t worry about the soup in the kitchen; I’ll be back in time.”
Xu Chengjin nodded obediently and felt her way to the sofa: “When are you going to bring the kitty over for me to play with?”
“Tomorrow.”
Si Yu began to clear the table: “The TV is voice-controlled. If you feel bored, you can listen to something.”
“Okay.”
The end of the word “okay” drifted playfully as Xu Chengjin spoke. She obediently finished her medicine. After taking it, she felt sleepy. Si Yu didn’t disturb her; she just quietly prepared a blanket for her and turned up the air conditioning temperature slightly. Her movements were very light, and she made almost no sound when she left.
The moment the door closed, the world fell silent.
Xu Chengjin wasn’t sure how long she had slept. She was awakened by the sound of knocking. She sat up and called out: “Coming.”
Then, she slowly walked toward the door. She didn’t think much of it, assuming the doctor had arrived. That old practitioner of Chinese medicine was quite elderly, and it wasn’t easy for him to make the trip.
“Open the door!”
The voice outside was unfamiliar and very aggressive. Xu Chengjin’s footsteps faltered. She tilted her head, trying to listen more closely, but the person outside was already impatient. The door was being pounded loudly: “Open up!”
“If you don’t open the door, I’m breaking it down!”
