The Sickly Fake Daughter, But a Beloved Darling of All - Chapter 85
Si Yu drove over herself to pick up Xu Chengjin. She moved Xu Chengjin’s luggage into the car, then opened the door and helped her inside carefully. “Slow down.”
“Mm, don’t worry.”
Over the past two days, Xu Chengjin had already been trying to find her way around in the darkness. She reached out her hand to feel the interior of the car, and Si Yu supported her from behind to ensure she could sit down steadily.
“Xiaojin.”
Xu Jing stood a couple of steps away from the car. She lowered her eyes to look at Xu Chengjin’s face and said softly, “Send me a message when you get there, okay?”
“I will.”
Xu Chengjin lifted the corners of her lips. She turned her head toward the other side, her eyelids drooping slightly. The idea of staying with Si Yu had been her own initiative. At the time, Si Yu had been somewhat surprised and asked if something had happened or if she was hiding something in her heart, fearing that she might be feeling hopeless.
But she had actually considered it carefully. She not only wanted to test the direction of the “plot,” but she also wanted to spend some time with Si Yu. The respect Si Yu showed her during their interactions was very strong; moreover, since she was currently blind and in poor health, she wished even more to follow her heart.
And then… there was the fact that Si Yu had brought back her assets with the intention of marrying her. This gesture had indeed made Xu Chengjin’s heart tremble. She knew Si Yu had feelings for her, but she hadn’t expected her to go to such lengths.
Si Yu sat in the driver’s seat. She turned her head and gave Xu Jing a slight nod as a polite greeting, but without waiting for Xu Jing to respond, she stepped on the gas and drove away.
“We aren’t going to the previous villa. I’m taking you to another home.”
Si Yu looked at Xu Chengjin through the rearview mirror, only to find that there wasn’t a trace of joy on the other woman’s face. Instead, she looked faintly sorrowful. Si Yu’s heart tightened, and she swallowed the words that were at the tip of her tongue. The two of them fell into silence, and neither spoke again.
Because Xu Chengjin could not see, Si Yu planned to find a smaller residence. The apartment was located in a high-end complex on the twenty-third floor. If Xu Chengjin’s eyes were healthy now, she would have discovered that the scenery here was beautiful. Many things in the house had been meticulously prepared.
There were various new items, deliberately arranged ornaments, and all sharp corners had been covered with soft padding for fear that Xu Chengjin might bump into something and hurt herself.
“Your room is here.”
Si Yu grasped Xu Chengjin’s hand through the fabric of her sleeve and used a bit of strength to lead her inside. “I’ll find a maid to take care of you later. I might be too busy with work during the day to accompany you all the time.”
“Work is important.” Feeling the warmth coming from her wrist, Xu Chengjin frowned almost imperceptibly, but she said nothing for the moment. “Where do you live?”
“I live across from you.”
Si Yu pushed open the door to set the luggage down first, then went to grab Xu Chengjin’s wrist again, but the other woman refused. Si Yu’s expression froze. Just as she was about to withdraw her hand, Xu Chengjin directly caught her fingers. She heard her ask, “What’s wrong with you?”
“Hm?” Si Yu didn’t understand what Xu Chengjin meant. “I’m fine.”
Hearing this, Xu Chengjin’s frown deepened. She didn’t hold back and asked directly, “Then why are you avoiding me? Or did you never actually want me to come here?”
“Is my language giving you pressure?” Xu Chengjin took two steps forward, her lips pursing with a hint of grievance. “Then you could have just said so. I wouldn’t have said anything.”
Si Yu was stunned by Xu Chengjin’s words, but she subconsciously pulled Xu Chengjin into an embrace. she explained in a panic: “It’s not that I didn’t want you to come. I’m happy to death that you’re willing to live with me. How could I possibly be avoiding you?”
Xu Chengjin didn’t believe her. She wrapped her arms around Si Yu’s waist and buried her head in the other’s chest. “Then why didn’t you hold my hand? Weren’t you quite generous before?”
“But you weren’t happy coming here, and you didn’t acknowledge me when I spoke to you.”
Si Yu felt a bit wronged. “I thought you just wanted to leave the Xu family for a while.”
She understood Xu Chengjin’s thoughts. Love and confinement were not in conflict. She could understand that Xu Chengjin wanted to come out for a breath of fresh air. In fact, Si Yu had already finished comforting herself at the start; she felt that even if Xu Chengjin was just using her as a stepping stone, it didn’t matter. At least Xu Chengjin had come to her in the end. If she had sought help from someone else, Si Yu would have been truly unhappy.
Xu Chengjin: “…”
“You—” For a moment, Xu Chengjin didn’t know what to say. She could only lightly pinch Si Yu’s side. She hummed softly, “What do you take me for? Can I make a joke out of something like this?”
“Apologize to me.”
Xu Chengjin was emboldened even if she wasn’t entirely in the right. After letting go of the hug, she extended a finger to poke the other’s heart, saying fiercely, “Hurry up!”
“I’m sorry, it’s all my fault. Don’t be angry anymore.”
Si Yu finally curled her lips into a smile, her tone becoming much more cheerful. “Then why didn’t you acknowledge me back then?”
She held Xu Chengjin’s hand and squeezed it. “I thought you hated me.”
A look of confusion appeared on Xu Chengjin’s face. “When did I ignore you? Did you speak to me?”
Si Yu solved the mystery: “…You didn’t hear me.”
It turned out that Xu Chengjin had just been spacing out and hadn’t heard what she said at all. Many misunderstandings had been created by her own imagination. Luckily, they had talked it out, otherwise Si Yu might have been secretly heartbroken for a long time.
“Are you an idiot? If you saw I didn’t respond, you should have asked a few more times.” Xu Chengjin was a bit awkward. She gave a “tsk” sound. “How could I possibly ignore you?”
“My fault.” Si Yu pinched Xu Chengjin’s cheek, her mood now relaxed and happy. “I’ll go cook for you and start brewing your medicine. Tomorrow I’ll invite that old Chinese medicine doctor to check on you. Your health is too poor; you need to recuperate well.”
“Mm.”
Xu Chengjin had already accepted these things. That day she had fainted at the hospital entrance—at that moment, she truly felt like she was going to die. While she was unconscious, she could hear sounds from the outside world, but it was as if she were wrapped in a layer of water film; no matter how she struggled, it was to no avail. Those sounds became blurred, and she felt as if she would drown inside. She didn’t remember how she had woken up…
She only knew that the moment she woke up, the clearest sound by her ear was Si Yu’s voice.
“What do you want to eat?” Si Yu led Xu Chengjin to explore the items in the room one by one. “When I’m at home, you can call for me anytime. When I’m not here, just call the maid. I know that lady well; she’s reliable and trustworthy. Don’t worry.”
“I trust you.”
Xu Chengjin lifted her lips. She tilted her head and asked, “Do you live here often?”
“Yes, this is one of the places I stay at the most. It’s close to the company, and I bought this apartment myself.”
Si Yu led Xu Chengjin back out. While the two were talking and laughing, Xu Chengjin’s phone suddenly rang. Xu Chengjin stopped in her tracks and asked in a low voice, “Who is calling?”
Si Yu’s finger, which was about to hit the “ignore” button, paused in mid-air. She let out a cold laugh:
“Jin Xi.”
An insignificant and annoying person.
