- Chapter 82 - I Want to Marry You
Xu Chengjin neither nodded nor shook her head. She merely stared silently at Si Yu, her previously hollow eyes filled with an indescribable sadness. The corners of her mouth twitched slightly as she shifted her body downward—
She was tired.
Si Yu released Xu Chengjin’s hand. She looked down at Xu Chengjin, who had already closed her eyes and was refusing to communicate. Then, she slowly let out a breath. She stood up and said softly, “Then I’ll be going now. Sorry for the intrusion; I’ll come back tomorrow.”
“Take care.”
Xu Jing followed Si Yu out, but she didn’t see her off very far before returning. When she came back to the ward, she saw that Xu Chengjin had sat up again. “Why are you up?”
Xu Chengjin shook her head, indicating she couldn’t sleep.
Jin Xi sat to one side and sighed. “Xiaojin, I won’t fight you for anything. To be honest, from the moment I learned the truth until now, I haven’t resented you for a single second. I…”
I like you.
Jin Xi swallowed those last few words, but Xu Chengjin seemed to hear the underlying meaning. She proactively turned her head toward her, and her other hand—the one not connected to the IV—carefully touched Jin Xi’s sleeve. Jin Xi’s eyes immediately lit up, and her brows curved into a smile. “I’m very happy that we can become family.”
Hearing this, Xu Chengjin also raised the corners of her lips. She lowered her head and squeezed Jin Xi’s hand. The atmosphere in the ward suddenly grew quiet. Mother Xu lowered her head, lost in thought, while Xu Jing stood to the side, looking at her two sisters in a long, speechless silence.
By the next day, Xu Chengjin was able to make sounds. Her aphasia had improved significantly, but it wasn’t the same as before. She could only produce blurred, indistinct sounds. The doctor said it might be because her subconscious was fearing or resisting something, making it impossible for her to relax. Once she adjusted mentally, she would be able to speak normally.
However, Xu Chengjin’s eyes needed some time. She required daily external medicinal applications. Her other physical vitals were normal, and the doctor said she could be discharged soon.
But Father Xu was not so lucky. He had a broken leg, a broken arm, and a fractured spine, so he would have to stay in the hospital for at least a month.
“Ma.”
Xu Chengjin’s voice was much hoarser. She tapped the side of her bed, wanting to know what time it was. Mother Xu immediately grasped her hand and replied tentatively, “It’s ten-thirty-two right now. Is there something you want to do?”
Xu Chengjin shook her head. She couldn’t see anything and was unwilling to get out of bed. Aside from her basic needs, she didn’t talk much, nor did she want to move. She had originally thought she would feel much lighter after speaking out, but instead, she felt a blockage in her chest, as if a breath of air remained unvented.
“Want to eat?”
Xu Jing had gone to the company today, and Jin Xi was in class. Mother Xu was the only one accompanying Xu Chengjin. Looking at Xu Chengjin’s expressionless face, she felt a deep sorrow in her heart. “Xiao Bao, talk to Mama about what’s on your mind. Mama will always love you.”
“Love you,” Xu Chengjin responded immediately. “A-ni (Love you).”
She loved Mother Xu, but every time she recalled her body collapsing in front of everyone, her body out of control as she revealed Jin Xi’s birth secret, she felt a lingering fear. Xu Chengjin would often wonder if she might just die in her sleep one day. It seemed there was a difference from her original ending—she would no longer be a corpse in the wilderness; instead, leaving quietly like this felt quite alright.
Coupled with the fact that she currently couldn’t see anything, the void of her vision amplified this psychological state. Regardless, she was satisfied with this life. Jin Xi had returned to the Xu family. It seemed… there was nothing left to linger for.
Was there really nothing?
Xu Chengjin lowered her eyes. She leaned her head against the bed, her entire being exuding a decadent beauty, like a tree full of blossoms facing the wind for one last brilliant display.
“Xiaojin—”
Mother Xu gripped Xu Chengjin’s hand in worry. She bit her lip. “Talk to Mama. If you speak out, we can think of a way together, we can solve it together.”
Xu Chengjin continued to shake her head. “No.”
“Xiaojin…”
Mother Xu’s voice suddenly faltered. Her attention was completely drawn to the person walking in, and her tone shifted. “Si Yu?”
“President Xu.”
Si Yu only brought a small bag with her. With a solemn expression, she came to Xu Chengjin’s side. “I’m here to see Xu Chengjin.”
“Oh.”
Mother Xu looked at her with some wariness. “Thank you for your concern.”
“It’s no trouble.” Si Yu found a chair and sat down herself. When she noticed Xu Chengjin turning her head to search for her, the smile on her face was unconcealed. “Xiaojin.”
“Mm.”
Xu Chengjin licked her lips, trying hard to pronounce the sounds of Si Yu’s name. “S…”
“I heard you.”
Si Yu grasped Xu Chengjin’s hand. In the next second, she pulled everything out of her bag. “These are some of my cards, as well as bankbooks, company shares, and property deeds. All of my assets are here.”
Xu Chengjin felt many things being placed in front of her. Her eyes widened, revealing a look of shock. “What… meaning?”
“I brought my ID card too.”
Si Yu’s voice rose with emotion. “I went back and thought about it for a long time. After thinking it over, I decided to ask for your thoughts now. Even if you refuse this, it doesn’t matter. Xu Chengjin, I hope you feel no pressure from me.”
“Xiaojin, I want to marry you.”
