- Chapter 81 - Would You Still Choose Me?
“It is normal that she cannot speak right now; temporary blindness may also be…”
Xu Chengjin sat alone on the hospital bed, a retention needle fixed to her hand. She required intravenous infusions every day, leaving her the back of her hand covered in puncture marks and bruises. The sounds surrounding her were chaotic and noisy; her face bore little expression, and in reality, she couldn’t hear very clearly anyway.
Would she die?
Xu Chengjin lowered her eyes slightly, concealing the sense of relief within them. In the next second, her hand was gently grasped. The warm touch made her subconsciously tremble for a moment, and she quickly earned an inquiry from that person: “What’s wrong?”
“Were you startled?” Si Yu held Xu Chengjin’s hand and rubbed it gently. She let out a small laugh. “Are you afraid?”
When Xu Chengjin woke up, she discovered she could not speak and could not see. However, she wasn’t particularly panicked; she simply waited quietly for the doctor to come and examine her, as if she had long anticipated all of this.
Xu Chengjin shook her head, indicating she wasn’t afraid. But Si Yu didn’t believe her, speaking up to contradict her: “I don’t believe you. You’re a little liar.”
Slap.
Xu Chengjin swatted Si Yu’s hand. She frowned and turned her head toward the source of the voice. Perhaps having missed the target, her face was then cupped by someone’s hands, which carefully guided her to look in one direction. Si Yu said warmly, “Over here.”
Oh.
Xu Chengjin pursed her lips. She squeezed Si Yu’s hand and did not let go afterward. She turned her head to seek the direction of the voices, her expression appearing somewhat dazed.
As soon as Jin Xi turned around, she saw their intertwined hands. Her expression shifted slightly, but she quickly returned to normal: “Xiaojin.”
“Mm.”
Currently, Xu Chengjin could only make “mm” and “hung” sounds, and even those weren’t very clear. She couldn’t manage any more words than that.
“It’s good that you woke up. The doctor said that once you woke up, there wouldn’t be any major problems,” Jin Xi sat by the bedside and spoke softly to her. “How are you feeling now?”
Xu Chengjin nodded. She still hadn’t released Si Yu’s hand, though she leaned her body slightly toward Jin Xi.
“Xiao Bao, when your eyes are better, we’ll take you back, alright?”
After Mother Xu and Xu Jing finished speaking with the doctor, they leaned toward Xu Chengjin. Seeing this, Si Yu glanced at Xu Chengjin. The girl’s pupils, which were originally clear and spirited, were now dim and lackluster. Si Yu had originally intended to stand up to let the family be together, but after glancing at Xu Chengjin’s eyes, she was no longer willing to look away.
If she was going to be scolded, so be it; she didn’t care anymore.
“President Si, we have some matters we’d like to discuss. Thank you for coming to see our Xiaojin today. We’ll find a time to have a meal together later.”
Mother Xu stood behind Jin Xi. Her tone was gentle, but the look she directed at Si Yu was not very friendly: “Xu Jing, see President Si out.”
Si Yu slowly exhaled. Upon hearing this, she prepared to stand up, but Xu Chengjin’s hand remained tightly gripped around hers, showing no intention of letting her leave.
“Xiaojin.”
Xu Jing lowered his voice: “Let go. Let President Si go back first; she is very busy.”
Xu Chengjin still didn’t let go. She stared straight ahead, but her expression had clearly soured. Her attitude made it difficult for the others to say anything more, deciding to wait until her health improved.
Mother Xu had no other choice and conceded a step: “The two of you truly do have a good relationship. Since you are willing to stay with President Si, then Mother won’t say anything more.”
She then looked at Si Yu: “I’ll have to trouble you then.”
“It’s no trouble.” Si Yu didn’t know what had happened, but she could feel that Xu Chengjin was in a bad mood, and this emotional perception caused her own mood to become quite unpleasant as well.
Just as Si Yu finished speaking, she noticed Xu Chengjin shaking her hand. She looked down, staring at Xu Chengjin with some confusion. At first, she thought it was an unconscious movement, but after Xu Chengjin shook her hand again, she realized something was wrong. She asked tentatively: “Do you want to say something?”
Xu Chengjin nodded. She was getting anxious because she couldn’t speak. After thinking for a long time, she had no choice but to pat herself, then frantically searched for Jin Xi’s hand. She didn’t want to say it later; she wanted to say it now, in front of Si Yu.
“Xiaojin.”
Jin Xi also understood what Xu Chengjin meant. She was somewhat surprised, then looked at Mother Xu in a daze, not quite understanding Xu Chengjin’s intention. But Mother Xu only looked at Xu Chengjin for a few seconds before sighing helplessly: “Then let’s talk about it now.”
Si Yu’s eyes shifted. She squeezed Xu Chengjin’s hand back, knitting her brows as she listened to them begin to speak.
In fact, the topics they discussed were nothing more than what identity Jin Xi would appear with, when she would appear, and then Xu Chengjin’s feelings and Jin Xi’s feelings. Initially, Jin Xi felt it would be better to appear in the public eye as an adopted daughter so that Xu Chengjin wouldn’t face any negative scrutiny, but Xu Chengjin refused.
“I don’t care how other people view this matter,” Jin Xi said anxiously. “Xiaojin…”
Xu Chengjin raised her hand to interrupt Jin Xi. She sighed and reached out to fumble for Mother Xu’s hand. Once she successfully caught it, she squeezed hard. This matter of identity was like a nightmare to her; she wanted to resolve it completely.
“Are you saying that Jin Xi is actually your biological daughter?” Sitting to the side, Si Yu finally understood what they were talking about. Her face was full of disbelief. “Are you sure?”
“We’ve done the DNA paternity test,” Xu Jing glanced at Si Yu. “Does President Si have any thoughts?”
Si Yu ignored him. Her gaze remained fixed on Xu Chengjin. Recalling the attention the girl had previously paid to Jin Xi, she suspected Xu Chengjin had likely known about this for a long time.
“So, do you want to give this identity back to Jin Xi?” Si Yu gripped Xu Chengjin’s hand tightly, even giving it a squeeze. “Is this what you’ve been afraid of all this time?”
Si Yu’s guess was very accurate. Xu Chengjin’s body stiffened almost imperceptibly. She bit her lip and slowly withdrew her hand. She was, of course, afraid that this occurrence would lead to her death, but now she was also afraid of the moment when the benefits ended—
When fate returned to its proper track, would Si Yu still choose her?
