The Sickly Fake Daughter, But a Beloved Darling of All - Chapter 75
“What nonsense are you talking about?”
Xu Chengjin was amused by Si Yu. She patted the person’s shoulder in front of her. “I really have to go back. I haven’t even taken my midday medicine yet.”
She was truly feeling exhausted. Today’s emotions had gone through such great highs and lows that after all the tossing and turning, Xu Chengjin felt as if she were about to fall asleep.
Seeing that Xu Chengjin’s state was not feigned, Si Yu stopped saying anything more. She did not get out of the car, merely watching Xu Chengjin leave. “I’ll have my secretary send the medicine over later. Remember to drink it.”
Xu Chengjin hummed in response. She nodded and obediently waved her hand at Si Yu. “I’m leaving.”
“Go on.”
After Si Yu finished speaking, she watched Xu Chengjin walk forward without looking back. The original smile on her face gradually vanished. She could clearly feel that Xu Chengjin treated her differently, yet she was always unsettled. Moreover, she could sense the other woman’s resistance toward her; it wasn’t a subconscious reaction, but rather felt like a resistance that arose only after she had thought of something.
“What are you hiding?”
Si Yu gave a cold laugh. She leaned back dejectedly, brushed back her scattered hair, and closed her eyes.
Truly exhausting—
Si Yu was very busy. She hadn’t visited for several days in a row. At first, Xu Chengjin didn’t ask, but later she learned that Si Yu had gone on an impromptu business trip. Because she was so busy, they couldn’t even manage a phone call. Combined with the time difference, there was a delay every time they replied to messages. Xu Chengjin might only see Si Yu’s reply when she woke up in the morning, and Si Yu would reply after Xu Chengjin woke up from her afternoon nap. The two of them basically had no way to chat in sync.
Additionally, Xu Chengjin had gone for another follow-up consultation in the past couple of days. That elderly Chinese medicine doctor had adjusted her prescription. The dosage was stronger, and the side effects were quite obvious. Her lethargy had worsened significantly. Previously, she had been worried if there was something wrong with the medicine, but she only found out after asking that it was because her body was too weak, so it had to be built back up slowly.
Furthermore, her appetite wasn’t very good, but the doctor said she must eat. Small, frequent meals were fine, but she absolutely could not skip eating. Every time Xu Chengjin ate, she forced herself to swallow. However, her overall state was decent, and she had even gained a little bit of weight over these few days.
Xu Chengjin’s class hours had decreased significantly, but she could make up the coursework later when she had time, so she wasn’t very worried about the subsequent exams.
“Up so early today?”
Wu Boran didn’t have classes in the morning. She was sleeping in a daze when she heard movement below her bunk. She picked up her phone, glanced at it, and saw it was only 8:30. “Are you going out?”
“Yes, I have something to take care of. Go back to sleep.”
Xu Chengjin put on a hat and walked straight out. The weather was starting to get colder; it was already November. She wore a trench coat and didn’t apply any makeup before heading out.
Her pace was very hurried, as if she were in a rush. Xu Chengjin’s eyes also held a hint of anxiety. She walked quickly to the agreed-upon location, where someone was already waiting for her.
It was the woman who had been with Si Yu the night she was sent home.
“Miss Xu.”
The woman smiled at Xu Chengjin. “Please sit. I’ll tell you everything slowly.”
“What exactly is going on?”
Xu Chengjin pulled out a chair and sat down, her breathing somewhat ragged. “Has everything been investigated clearly?”
“Yes.”
The woman handed over a file folder. “You can look at the contents inside, or you can listen to me explain.”
“According to the DNA test, Chen Fang and Jin Xi are not mother and daughter. Later, we investigated Chen Fang’s past. There is a high probability that Jin Xi was a child who was bought, but the seller still hasn’t been found. The only lead we could find is… an overseas account that transferred money to Chen Fang.”
The woman paused for a moment and poured a cup of tea for Xu Chengjin. “So, we reasonably suspect that Jin Xi was deliberately sent away. Not only was she sent away, but Chen Fang was given a substantial sum of money. However, because Chen Fang’s husband was a gambler, he quickly gambled that money away and even incurred a massive debt.”
Xu Chengjin quickly flipped through the contents of the file. She furrowed her brows. “An overseas account? You can’t find out who it is?”
“We can’t find out.”
The woman shook her head. “This happened a long time ago, so it’s quite difficult to track. Besides, we would need to find Jin Xi’s biological parents first. However, I have already sent people to give Chen Fang a warning. She also admitted that her paralysis was caused by childbirth.”
“How did the man die?” Xu Chengjin tossed the materials aside, her arms crossed with a look of clear disgust. “Was he beaten to death?”
“He was a chronic alcoholic and was hit by a car,” the woman sneered. “There was some compensation money, but in the end, it was all used up. That’s why they kept making Jin Xi earn money. This whole family is truly disgusting.”
Xu Chengjin closed her eyes briefly and took a deep breath. “I understand. Please help me keep a close eye on Chen Fang’s family. Don’t let them cause any more trouble.”
“Don’t worry.”
The woman nodded immediately. “I will continue to have people watch them.”
“Mhm.”
Xu Chengjin clasped her hands together. She bit her lip, a clear look of hesitation in her eyes. “I want to ask you to help me do another paternity test.”
She wanted to see if Jin Xi and Mother Xu were actually mother and daughter.
Were those memories of hers… real?
