- Chapter 65 - We Are Just Friends
Xu Chengjin sent a message to Si Yu before class ended, explaining roughly what time she would arrive at the school gate. After Jin Xi finished asking her questions, she stopped replying to her, so Xu Chengjin naturally didn’t say much more; after saying goodbye, she left.
“Xiao Jin!”
Si Yu was actually already waiting at the gate. When she saw Xu Chengjin walk out, she immediately stepped forward: “Get in the car; the other party is already waiting.”
She naturally took Xu Chengjin’s bag and opened the car door for her: “This evening…”
“I’m not going to class tonight. Let’s find a place to eat dinner.”
Xu Chengjin sat in the back of the car. Without much hesitation, she picked up a bottle of yogurt from the back seat and started drinking: “What do you think?”
“I think it’s great, of course.” Si Yu started the car and let out a sigh. “But can you keep up with your schoolwork?”
Even though she knew Xu Chengjin’s grades were excellent, perhaps being the older one, she still asked out of habit.
However, Xu Chengjin didn’t find it offensive. She nodded: “I can keep up.”
“That’s good then.”
Si Yu was in a good mood. After bringing Xu Chengjin to the agreed location, she said softly: “This old practitioner of Chinese medicine has a very good temper, so you don’t need to be afraid. I’ve been in contact with her before; she just looks fierce.”
“Okay.”
Xu Chengjin looked very well-behaved. She followed Si Yu into a small alley, and they walked for quite a while before finding a door. The door looked like it had some years on it. Si Yu knocked first, and soon someone opened the door and invited them in: “Follow me.”
The person who received them was the granddaughter of the old doctor. The old doctor was sitting there drinking tea; seeing them come over, she beckoned to them: “Sit down, let me see what’s going on.”
Xu Chengjin felt a light nudge from Si Yu. She instinctively turned her head to look and saw Si Yu watching her, seemingly signaling her to take the initiative to step forward. Only then did she boldly walk forward: “Hello.”
“Stretch out your hand.”
The old doctor began to take Xu Chengjin’s pulse, and subsequently asked her many questions. Si Yu sat by the side the entire time, recording on her phone for fear of missing a single detail; she didn’t even drink the water someone brought to her.
“It can be treated, but this is a long-term process. Come to me once a month for a course of treatment.” The old doctor lowered her hand and took a sip of tea. “Can you do that?”
This time, Si Yu didn’t even wait for Xu Chengjin to answer. Her eyes lit up: “Yes, of course we can. You don’t need to worry about the fees or anything else.”
The old doctor glanced at her: “Your stomach and intestines aren’t very good. You should regulate them properly; otherwise, if it develops to an irreversible stage, even the Great Golden Immortals won’t be able to save you.”
At these words, Xu Chengjin’s expression changed. She looked up at Si Yu and let out a soft huff: “I will supervise her.”
“That’ll do.”
The old doctor stood up and began to gather herbs for Xu Chengjin: “You must drink the medicine every day. You can stop taking a few of the doses the previous doctor prescribed for you, but everything else remains the same.”
Xu Chengjin nodded: “Alright.”
“What is the relationship between you two?” The old doctor had met Si Yu years ago and they were somewhat familiar, but she knew nothing about Xu Chengjin. However, seeing how Si Yu treated her like a treasure, she knew it certainly wasn’t simple.
Xu Chengjin did not speak. She tilted her head up to look at Si Yu behind her. Si Yu did not look at her, but simply said: “Friends.”
A… very important friend.
Si Yu didn’t notice the look in Xu Chengjin’s eyes as they dropped. Instead, she walked over and took the packaged medicine in her hand: “Then we’ll be leaving now. I’ll transfer the money to you later.”
The old doctor nodded and let her go.
Si Yu didn’t stay long with Xu Chengjin. She walked ahead holding the medicine: “Your school doesn’t have a place to decoct medicine, right? How about I have it brewed on my end and send it over to you?”
Xu Chengjin got into the car and gave an “Mm.” On the surface, nothing seemed out of the ordinary, but Si Yu still sensed something was wrong. She turned her head in confusion: “Why are you unhappy? The doctor said there is a chance it can be cured.”
“I know.”
Xu Chengjin curled her lips into a smile. She leaned forward slightly, her finger hooking around Si Yu’s pinky: “I was just thinking about how good you are to me. It seems as long as there is even a slight chance for a cure, you will go for it.”
Si Yu looked down at their intertwined fingers and let out a soft laugh: “I will. I hope you can live out this life in peace.”
As long as you can survive.
“Xiao Jin—”
Si Yu murmured her name. She looked up and met Xu Chengjin’s gaze; her eyes were so gentle, so lingering.
She hoped Xu Chengjin could face the wind of the setting sun, feel the comfort brought by the rain, and possess all beautiful things—
And that she could run wantonly across this vast land.
Just like the year they first met.
