- The Sickly Fake Daughter, But a Beloved Darling of All
- Chapter 51 - Why Did It Take You So Long to Come Find Me
Xu Chengjin’s condition wasn’t very good. The doctor suggested she stay in the hospital for a few more days, and it wasn’t until the third day after waking up that she could finally start speaking.
Jin Xi and Wu Boran came to see her on the first day she woke up. This time, the two of them weren’t arguing; they walked in with all four eyes red, and upon seeing her lying in bed with an oxygen tube, they couldn’t help but want to cry.
Jin Xi sat by her bed, silently weeping. Wu Boran seemed to handle it a bit better, but her voice was still unmistakably choked: “Are you okay?”
Xu Chengjin wanted to answer that she was fine, but unfortunately, she couldn’t utter a single word. She could only watch them quietly. Xu Jing, who was standing beside her, explained in a low voice: “She won’t be able to speak for the next two days.”
“I’ve cleaned up the dorm. When you get better and go back, you’ll see a clean place to live.”
Wu Boran didn’t know what to say. She lowered her head and awkwardly brought up a topic: “Get some good rest these few days. I’ll come over whenever I have time.”
Xu Chengjin smiled slightly. She blinked, indicating that she understood.
“I’ve been taking notes for all your classes at school, so don’t worry about falling behind. Your mother contacted me yesterday and found me a tutoring job. The pay is quite good.”
Jin Xi wiped away a tear. She only found out about the situation this morning. For the past few days, she hadn’t seen Xu Chengjin, who wasn’t replying to messages or answering calls. She finally got worried enough to look for Wu Boran, and that’s when she learned Xu Chengjin was sick and hospitalized, and quite seriously ill.
“Thank you.”
Jin Xi sincerely thanked Xu Chengjin. She lightly touched Xu Chengjin’s hand. The already slender person was now much thinner. Looking at the other’s hand made her tear up again: “You’re too thin. When you get better, I’ll make you good food so you can properly nourish your body.”
“Mm.”
Xu Chengjin managed a difficult “mm” from her nasal cavity. Her eyes were tired, but a gentle warmth was visible within them. Her fingers curled slightly, as if agreeing with Jin Xi’s words.
The two didn’t want to bother Xu Chengjin for long, as her most important task was to rest. They left soon after, and Xu Chengjin spent the remaining time sleeping. She was simply too exhausted and slept all day long.
Xu Jing even specially consulted the doctor about this, who said it was normal and that she should just let her sleep; once she got enough sleep, her body would recover.
Xu Jing hadn’t gone to the company these days. Even when dealing with work, she brought her laptop to the hospital.
“…Sister.”
Xu Chengjin felt like she could finally speak. She looked at the ceiling and laboriously squeezed out a few syllables from her throat: “jie…”
Xu Jing was in the middle of a meeting, focused on listening to her subordinate’s report, but for some reason, she felt like someone was calling her. She subconsciously turned her head and met Xu Chengjin’s gaze—
No, someone really was calling her!
Xu Jing’s eyes instantly widened. She immediately ended the meeting, got up, and ran to call the doctor, even forgetting about the call button in the room.
Xu Chengjin lay silently in bed, watching Xu Jing rush out, her steps hasty, almost tripping. She couldn’t help but curve her eyebrows into a smile, quietly waiting for the doctor to come and examine her.
Soon, a group of people rushed into her room, drawing blood and checking her recovery status. After a series of procedures, they finally gave an answer: “The recovery is decent. Can you speak?”
The doctor stood by the bed and asked Xu Chengjin to make an “a” sound: “a.”
Xu Chengjin: “a…”
“I… can… speak.”
Xu Chengjin could talk, but it wasn’t very smooth; she spoke one word at a time: “I, want, to, be, discharged.”
Upon hearing this, the doctor immediately objected: “No. You need at least a few more days. We need to observe you and only discharge you once there is absolutely no risk.”
The doctor’s non-negotiable tone instantly plunged Xu Chengjin’s mood into the dumps. After silently processing her emotions, she whispered: “Okay.”
“Alright then, Ms. Xu, we’ll be leaving.” The doctor gave Xu Jing a few more instructions, “She can slowly drink some millet porridge or similar things. Don’t eat anything irritating, and don’t let her emotions become too agitated. She can also slowly try getting out of bed to walk.”
Xu Jing nodded repeatedly: “Okay, I understand.”
She watched the doctor leave, and the moment she heard the door close, she immediately turned around and squatted by the bed: “Does it hurt?”
“It’s… fine.”
Xu Chengjin turned her head to look at Xu Jing. Xu Jing had become noticeably worn out these two days. The dark circles under her eyes were very prominent, and there was a clear wound on her face. She wondered who had hit her so hard; it hadn’t faded even after several days.
“What, happened, to, the, wound, on, your, face?”
Xu Chengjin painfully squeezed out a sentence. Her eyebrows were tightly furrowed. She slightly raised her hand, intending to touch Xu Jing’s face. The other party sensed her intention and immediately held her hand, pressing it against her own face: “Got punched.”
“Who?”
Who would dare bully Xu Jing? Was it someone from the company?
Had so many things happened these past few days that she didn’t know about?
Xu Jing hesitated. She held Xu Chengjin’s hand, lightly stroking it with her thumb. She lowered her eyes before speaking: “Si Yu hit me.”
Xu Chengjin: “…Si Yu.”
“Yes, that day Wu Boran brought you to the hospital. She happened to call you and rushed over after hearing about your condition from Wu Boran.” Xu Jing sighed silently, her face filled with guilt, “I’m sorry, Big Sister shouldn’t have said those things to you that day.”
Xu Chengjin slowly shook her head. She didn’t withdraw her hand but moved her gaze away. Speaking of which, she hadn’t seen Si Yu these days. Had she come or not?
“Did, she, come?”
Xu Chengjin didn’t specify a name, but Xu Jing immediately understood. She shook her head: “No. It seems there was an issue at the Si family’s old residence, and she’s busy dealing with it.”
“Mm.”
Xu Chengjin gently pulled her hand away. She turned her head and closed her eyes: “I’m tired.”
“Then sleep.”
Xu Jing stood up and tucked Xu Chengjin in. She said warmly: “Big Sister will stay with you.”
Xu Chengjin didn’t reply and just closed her eyes, falling into sleep.
She hadn’t been able to look at her phone for the past few days. She slept until evening and was awakened by hunger. As long as the body shows a slight improvement, recovery is very fast. That evening, she was already able to sit up and eat.
Xu’s mother and father also came, bringing specially made nutritious porridge. Xu’s mother opened the insulated container and placed it on the bedside table: “Shall Mommy feed you?”
“Daddy can do it too.”
Both elders had quite a few gray hairs, and the anxiety in their eyes was completely unconcealed. They were nervously watching her, afraid of any slight mishap.
Xu Chengjin felt both heartache and happiness. She smiled at the two of them: “I’ll do it myself.”
She picked up the spoon and brought spoonfuls to her mouth, but unfortunately, due to being ill for so long, her appetite was greatly reduced. She couldn’t eat much after a few bites. It wasn’t good to eat too much after receiving IV nutrition for two days. Xu’s mother didn’t rush her; she just quietly cleared the things from the table.
“My, phone?”
Xu Chengjin lay against the headboard. She reached out her hand: “Give it to me.”
“It’s here with me.”
Xu Jing, who hadn’t spoken, interjected at this moment. She handed the phone to Xu Chengjin: “It’s fully charged.”
Xu Chengjin nodded: “Mm!”
The strength in her hands wasn’t great, so she placed the phone on her body to use it. As soon as she unlocked it, she saw various messages. Many classmates had sent her messages to express their concern, and Jin Xi had sent her many video and voice calls, as well as quite a few messages. Her expression softened, and she subconsciously searched for one person’s name, but unfortunately, the person hadn’t sent anything.
She must really be busy.
Xu Chengjin bit her lip. She posted a moment on WeChat: [Thank you everyone for your concern. I’m much better now. I’m very sorry I can’t reply to everyone individually. Thank you again for all your messages.]
“The doctor told you to rest more and play with your phone less.”
Xu Jing couldn’t help but speak: “Do you understand, Little Treasure?”
Xu Chengjin nodded. She turned off her phone and placed it aside: “Just replying to messages.”
“No need, to stay, tonight.”
Xu Chengjin knew that staying overnight to accompany a patient was tiring. Xu Jing looked like she hadn’t slept well for days. This couldn’t continue; she might break down herself.
Xu’s mother was the first to disagree: “No, then I’ll stay with you.”
“Daddy can too.” Xu’s father anxiously scratched his head, “I only regret that I’m a man; I wish I were a woman.”
Xu’s mother irritably pushed him away: “Go away.”
“No need.”
Xu Chengjin smiled at them: “The doctor, checks in, at night. Go back and, have a good, sleep. Even if you, come later, in the night, it’s fine.”
Xu Jing still wanted to say something, but Xu Chengjin was determined for her to go back and rest properly, insisting that no one needed to stay. Xu Jing had no choice but to say she would come back around two or three in the morning after taking a shower and getting some sleep.
Xu Chengjin obediently agreed: “Okay.”
She then waved and sent the three people out of the ward. As soon as they left, her smile faded. She slowly lay down, poking the darkened screen with her finger. She sighed, a look of disappointment in her eyes.
“Might as well sleep.”
Having nothing else to do, Xu Chengjin had no choice but to sleep, but it seemed she had slept too much during the day and woke up quickly that night.
The moment she opened her eyes, she sensed something was wrong. There seemed to be someone beside her bed, breathing heavily, as if they had a slight cold.
Xu Chengjin blinked. Her eyes were much clearer. The next second, she turned over and looked. The light in the ward was dim, and she could only vaguely make out the person’s silhouette: “When did you get here?”
As soon as she reached out her hand, the other person securely held it: “Just got here a little while ago.”
Xu Chengjin listened to the person’s heavy voice and pursed her lips. She quietly said: “Why didn’t you send me a message?”
If listened closely, one could hear the complaint in her voice.
“I’ve been waiting for your message for a long time.”
Xu Chengjin whispered: “Do you have a cold?”
Si Yu “Mm’d.” She held Xu Chengjin’s hand and pressed it against her own face. She chuckled softly, looking at the person before her with tenderness and affection: “I’m sorry, I made you wait too long this time.”
“I’ll never make you wait again—”
